Back once again with a review I didn’t intend to make but a few days back you all just started to ask for it. I bought it. Couldn’t stop playing and well...the rest is history! Let me know what you think of this one! Mark

NIce review. Would like your opinon on how well games play when docked and when in handheld. Some games when in handheld have difficult text to read, controls are not as good or the sound isnt as clear. The Switch lite cant be used docked so a comparison would be great. The characters in this game look small on the screen, does that affect handheld gameplay ? Again, nice review.
Marc Russell I play solely on a lite and it is easy to see and everything has a lot of clarity
Marc Russell I’ve had no issues with it in Docked or Handheld from a text standpoint as I generally use headphones and everything character based is voice acted. Nothing particularly stood out as bad in that area. Mark
You go about the English accent. These guys supposed to be Greek but for some reason Greek and Rome type of storylines everyone has to have a British accent even if the voice actors are American.
Is it similar to Dead Cells where if you die, you have to START OVER? I hated that.
Most appreciated/underrated feature: voice actors don’t take three times longer to say a line than it takes for me to read it.
You’re absolutely right.
This is so true and I legitimately said that to myself while playing. Plus the speech and voices are interesting enough to wait regardless :)
Facts! I’m a pretty fast reader and I always tend to skip through dialogue cutscenes since voice actors take forever. But with this game I actually got to sit back and enjoy the game.
Hermes is a beast in this regard.
Oh yes you’re right!
One thing that blows my mind is how, despite constantly dying and having to restart, it always feels like the story is progressing, because all of the dialogue progresses as you die. For example, the first couple of times I met and fought the first real boss of the game I was defeated by her, and each time I met her she commented on how I kept losing to her. Then, when I finally defeated her (and eventually died to another enemy further in), I found her to talk to back at the beginning, and she was mad I beat her. Further time Is reached her she'd comment on how sometimes she wins and sometimes I win. It was so refreshing to see something that wasn't just repeating each and every time. It felt fresh every time! I've done about 20 attempts so far, and I have yet to see any dialogue repeated!
Indeed. I have like 10 hours in, and not one single line of dialogue has been recycled. In a 6 GB game, I cannot believe it. I also wonder if people who are better than most will just skip some dialogues due to advancing too fast? With such an epic script and voice acting, that'd be a big miss!
Whoa that sounds neat. Thanks for letting me know that.
Although I like the fact that they change up the encounters for the final room of the first floor, Because of the context and the script, everytime I beat Meg (which happened a lot) I kind of felt bad that I was wiping the floor with her haha
That’s actually incredible! Is it like dark souls when you die?
That no save points makes the game a 0.
I'd like to point out that Hades isn't the devil, he's actually one of the better Greek gods.
people just tend to think that any god of the underworld is evil.
@@pforgottonsoul Disney didn't help
@@pforgottonsoul But if you play this game and still think hades is the devil. and that the underworld is hell Fair to say you did not pay attention
I mean the underworld is essentially hell. But hades was actually a good guy compared to a few other gods.
@@jamielishbrook2384 I mean, the Elysium is essentially heaven so you could say it is the entire afterlife.
I loved all of his review except one thing. You said that you had planned not to review this. Shattered my heart, but you came through! Amazing.
Something that was missed in the review is the "God Mode" feature you can turn on in the settings. It reduces the damage that you take by 20% and every run after that reduces the damage by 2% until you hit 80% total damage reduction. Helps those that can't quite finish the game due to taking too many hits.
It’s such a wonderful feature for a game that so rich in story. Being completely optional, but available from the start is a great idea
Was just about to post this - its a really nice touch for those (me) who like the idea of these rogue games but ending up drifting away when they just get too frustrating... it's a great balance between not making the game too easy and incentivising me to keep playing as that boss just get a tiny bit easier each time I die :-)
I'll add that to the top post! Thanks
It was made for noobs like me.
I’ve only just got round to playing Hades in the past couple of weeks, don’t think I’d have even got one escape out of the way without God Modes help at the end of Elysium.
Missed the sale, went in at full price. 0 regrets, incredible game.
Hades loves you.
Haha same for me! Picked it up after the sale after 'all my friends' forced me to start playing it! Didn't even know of this game. Now I'm totally hooked!
How much off was the sale?
@@Justme-jp8ih 20% I think
@@mozzaFtw Oh ok so its same amount as its right now. Thanks for the quick reply!
I am utterly addicted to this game. I've been playing it all day while watching strategy videos here on UA-cam.
Yeah it's fantastic
Where to look for strategy videos?
Same, been following this game since it started early access almost 2 years ago. It actually lived up to my hype.
@@nubbmann637 a UA-camr called Jawless Paul has a fair few
@@alpacatears no way!! That's cool you watch him too!
Very underrated UA-camr. Hes really entertaining and quite hilarious sometimes. I found him through looking for more Hollow Knight playthroughs.. definitely worth the watch
The weapon variety really adds to the replayability. Whenever I got stuck on a boss I would switch my weapon and see what happens. It makes the emphasis less on progression and more on experimentation, which goes a long way for a rogue like.
Very true! Mark
This is bumping up the list to buy quick. Thanks for the info.
@@mattmillah428 It's really great game from a developer that puts a lot of love and care into their work. I personally cannot recommend the game highly enough.
My only issue so far is, sometimes it gets so messy/busy with enemies and effects, I don't notice that I got hit. Besides that...this is a game you can put in 100 hours in without even noticing.
Finally. This review is a blast. I love it. Hades is a well anticipated game that delivered with a bang.
It really did! Mark
Absolutely one of the best indie games going. An absolute baller of a game. Glad you liked it Mark as much as we did! 👍
Sorry mate I don't know how I missed this. You're right it's a fantastic game! Mark
Just purchased it! Already deep into my 4th hour of play - and to say I’m hooked is an understatement! This game has such an incredible story loop - that even as a rogue-like game it feels connected between each death/rebirth. The story flows right into each death - as you are the son of Hades and death can’t ‘keep you in your room’. I find that hilarious and charming - and dark. Also the feedback - it feels SO GOOD. As good as any AAA ARPG - devs deserve this - another huge win for Supergiant! Also love me some Greek mythology
I have 400+ hours clocked on Dead Cells, but even after just around 20 hours Hades managed to de-throne that game as my new all time favorite Rogue-lite. Everything is presented with such amazing style. I love the dry humor and voice acting to bits. Progression is also incredibly fair and rewarding and there is SO much to unlock with so much variety. The people at Supergiant Games sure know their craft.
Are you still feel that about dead cells? Are you still playing hades more or dead cells…. Love both games though but i think dead cells has better replayability
@@Lior__plays I haven't played Hades in over a year. I absolutely loved every second of the roughly 170 hours i put into the game, but after 100%ig it and playing a couple dozen more runs on high heat levels i moved on. I can't wait for Hades 2 though.
As for Dead Cells i completely agree that it has more replayablilty than Hades, but it also had several great DLCs over the years adding new content so that's to be expected. ^^
Great review. Haven't been around alot just want to say I love that little visual at the end with the prices around the world and the file size. It's a nice way to clean up and round out the video that you don't see much.
Thanks mate really appreciate that! Mark
Picked it up yesterday. Stuck 7 hours straight in. Went to bed exhausted, but happy. The script is great. I've probably not flat out fell in love with a game like this since Dead Cells.
Words can't describe how much I'm looking forward to being able to buy this game :)
Super Giant Games are quite possibly my favourite developer. They were my introduction into indie gaming with Bastion, and Transistor is in my personal top 5 games on my Switch. :)
@Jack Burton it's not about affording it, i have a few games I need to play first, one of which is Phoenotopia, which is proving to be a very good long game :)
@Jack Burton 20 dollars is a day or so of food for some.
You were not sent her to 'get it', Mr. Burton.
If it's nothing to you, buy the bloke the game. Why not, it's not a big deal???
@Jack Burton spoken like the type of person that is close friends with WANG
I don't usually play this genre, but gosh this game is mad addicting!!!! I love how you can even customize your room...
Was really on the fence about getting this game but after watching your video it is definitely on my must buy list :)
It's brilliant! Mark
Thanks for the review Mark. I was in chat the other day praising this. I’ve put in double digits already and don’t see me stopping anytime soon.
Thanks mate great recommendation! Mark
I feel like as we get games like Dead Cells and Hades, they make other Roguelikes pale in comparison. Dead Cells, Hades, and Enter the Gungeon have very similar scores, but I feel Dead Cells and Hades are in an entirely separate league compared to enter the gungeon.
That’s interesting. Enter the gungeoun is one of fav games of all time. Can’t wait to play this
Maria Hanover they hit a very particular set of emotional and tactical cues that don’t translate into scores - I know exactly what you mean! Mark
While I like dead cells, I think that enter the gudgeon is better as no upgrade is permanent and you have to only improve your skill. While in dead cells due to permanent upgrades, the game gets easier in the long run
I never really got into Dead Cells. I loved Binding of Isaac (300+ hours) and will be looking to grab Hades
totally agree, the first areas of enter the gungeon are so annoying to get through, while dead cells and Hades are a blast to play
Your channel convinced me to buy a switch. I took most of your suggestions and enjoyed everything I bought. I sold my switch today, but I clicked on this link to hear your voice one more time. Thanks for all the work you did, you love the games and it comes through in your videos. Stay awesome fellas. SEE YA!
Just picked this up last night and it’s very well done. I usually don’t care for rogue likes because of the frustration of making any real progress but this one seems nice and fair. For my skill level any how,
I missed the new genre term rogue like. Can some explain this to me?
@@hioe04 It's actually not a new term or type of gameplay but is really one that has lain dormant for a while. Basically the levels are sorta randomly generated if you die. So, whereas in most games, if you die you'll just know exactly where to go back to and there will be the same layouts but in a roguelike things will change from death to death. I personally don't like that formula of gaming but there are tons of people that do. If you like Castlevania or Spelunky or Dead Cells I'm assuming this game is in the vain of those. I've not played it though but have heard glowing things about it all around. I'm still playing back through all the Mario's on 3d All Stars again. I hope this helps you out.
I started it last night but I instantly fell in love. Dead Cells vibe mixed with Bastion narrative and I melted. Such a great backdrop and plot point to keep you going. So far I have to force myself to stop playing.
Yeah it’s incredible! Mark
I'm loving it. It's a nice mix between Transistor art style, Dead Cells rogue like elements and Children of Morta gameplay and dungeons. Mario All Stars is taking a back seat for now!
I thought you'd snap this one up mate! Mark
Just bought this game because of this review. Also Supergiant games has been amazing with their past titles. It's only fair to show our love and support to their new game.

So addicting that I went back and even redownloaded Transistor, Bastion, and Dead Cells for more like this.
Absolutely right mate. It's unreal! Mark
I can't get into transistor. The combat just feels so weird.
Dead cells 👍
Addictive not addicting
@@kevinbuchanan67 they're both adjectives, basically interchangeable
I am not into this type of games but after watching some of the reviews I decided to buy it and try it out and OMG. It’s a very polished well thought-out game. I just can’t stop playing. One of the best games for the switch right now
Glad you enjoy it! Mark
Bought Hades this morning ; because I LOVED Bastion . I have only played this game today. I might have "forgotten" to do things today . Oh well back to the game.
Hehehe who needs food, sleep and washing anyway!? Mark
Haven't been addicted to a game this much in years. Had my eye on it for ages since it's been in early access when it surprise launched on switch I had to buy it. Best €20 I've probably ever spent on a game !
this is my favourite Supergiant game, and I loved transistor. It's also my first roguelike. I am not very good at it, but they implemented a god-mode (which was actually suggested to me in game). The god-mode is implemented so that you get a 20% resistance to attacks, and that goes up by 2% for every death after that. It's a balanced approach that works really well. After doing that, I managed to get past the first boss (with only 3 health). I love how all the weapons are different with strengths and weaknesses, and the same with the upgrades. If you get something really good early on, (i love knockback with the shields special attack) and just upgrade it a few times, it's very gratifying. The refinement of this game reflects the pedigree of all their previous games.
It's really very cool
This looks awesome. I've been waiting for this to port for ages. So glad you reviewed it. Cheers for that.
I've been on the fence about this game for a while, but this review convinced me. You guys do an awesome job of showing what playing the game is actually going to be like.
Hey Glen & Mark I just want to say thankyou for creating this channel I finally treated myself to hades after watching your review over and over and I am so impressed! Since following your channel I’ve picked up so many games that I probably wouldn’t have even looked at and expanded my game collection beyond puzzles, simulations and RPG’s. The reviews you guys give are so honest and reliable so thankyou again for keeping me entertained with your videos and helping my gaming collection grow and most of all keeping me occupied why I recover from a motorbike related leg injury. Thanks Dan
Thanks Dan. Very much appreciated. We wish you a speedy recovery mate. Glen
That permanency is key for me. I hate some roguelikes that don't give you enough progress satisfaction besides "get gud".
Exactly right
Games that treat me like that. I tell him. Bye 👋🏻😂
But yes. Hades is awesome
There is a lot of fulfillment in this game's progression system, but the game also has a huge emphasis on experimentation. The weapon variety in combination to the unique buffs you acquire each run gives you a lot to play around with. I found myself wanting to start a new run because I wanted to try something new. The permanent acquisitions are nice, but the game play holds up very well on its own.
Sun Hat he understands. He just doesn’t like it
I've watched your review on this a few times because you always find a reason to bring this game up, I just got it on sale and I'm soooooo pumped to play this one after all the hype.
I'm hooked 10hours later seemed like 30 min lmao. I should just give you my credit card and you can load my switch with games lol. Great vid brother
Cheers Andrew hahaha
I don’t think there has ever been a game where I’ve died constantly and still felt like I was progressing the plot somehow. And the feeling of getting stronger after every death and getting a little bit further each time is quite satisfying. I’m obsessed with this game right now, it’s so addictive!
I'm not big into rogue lites. I play them now and then but rarely hooked and this one I haven't stopped playing. I absolutely love how death is part of the story and work with progressions. I'm not normally good at rogue lites but I do well on this. Doubt I will beat it as quick as others but I'm having too much fun to care at this point.
Using the shield after a few upgrades felt like Rygar to me. Even looks like him. I'd swear there are a couple frames of animation where they snuck an actual Rygar image in.
This game is an absolute steal at $25. Ive put in about 16 hours in after only 2 days and I can't stop playing.
Thanks for this in depth review! Downloading now and ignoring the judgmental stares I am getting from my backlog! :)
Hahaha
Brilliant game, picked it up on launch day and no regrets. Great for small short runs, but then time can just disappear
I get everything from Supergiant, love their games, music, and art styles. Its great that every game is different.
I have been absolutely ADDICTED to this game. Such a good grab
I just finished Transistor, so Hades coming to Switch now is a really pleasant surprise. SuperGiant has yet to make a bad game.
People seem to forget about their game Pyre, it isn't for Switch, but it came out between Transistor and Hades and is a very heartfelt and enjoyable experience.
Absolutly love this one. I have been playing it for a long time via early access on the PC and loved seeing the game grow. Just when you think you have gotten use to how everything works, the game introduces a new feature that shakes up what you know just enough.
Also just wanted to hilight, if you are interested in the narrative (which as stated, is drip fed to you as you progress) but are not a "get gud" player, you can turn on a god mode option which makes the experience a bit more forgiving.
I'm not generally a fan of roguelike games, but I think I'll pick this one up. Too bad I JUST missed the sale, but $24 is still a damn good price for a game with hours upon hours of playability. (Plus, the art is gorgeous, which is what drew me to the game in the first place.)
Started playing it after this review. Addictively fun as you put it so well, great review👍
Thanks mate! Mark
It's currently on sale for $17.49 and I just dumped all of my Nintendo gold coins into this game to get it for free. I hope I don't end up regretting it...
A rogue lite like this that turns up the central hub/ base upgrading aspect even more would be awesome.
Thanks for your reviews because of this video I picked it up on sale last week for 50 percent off your reviews are amazing and I am also addicted wish I picked it up physically
Been playing this game since sometime last year in early access on PC... and it has been an incredible journey. Love it and continuously try to recommend it to friends
Wow, the art style in this game is amazing!
I would pick this up right away if I hadn't bought Dead Cells in the recent sale. I can only really deal with one of these types of games on the go at a time. Hades can go on the wishlist until I am ready for it.
So glad this is on switch now. Put so much time into it on PC but stopped because I just don’t get on my pc much anymore but I always have my switch
This was my first Early Access game, it's such a gem. SGG just keeps pumping out instant hits.
How did this game slip past my radar? I'm not much of an indie gamer, but I do love rogue-likes, and even more so if they have a Diablo vibe!
I have purchased it but not got around to playing it yet due to 3D all stars coming out. Wish there was more time in the day. Defo looks like a cult classic in the making so won’t be surprised if it gets dlc and a massive following. Can’t believe you were gunna just play this one and keep it to yourself though!! 🥺 Don’t do that to us guys!! Glad you made the vid anyway as it was very in depth and enough to wet my roguelike appetite. Keep up the great content my dudes 👍🏻
Not really into roguelike games but I've heard good things about the devs and this game. Looks fun so I'll prolly buy... plus main character is cute 😂
It has an easy mode (God mode) that lets you gain +2% damage resistance each time you die/lose a run. I'm not that great with this game style either, but I'm having a blast :D
It’s my first rogue like game, but I bought it just from the supergiant name alone (love all their previous games), and I’m thoroughly addicted to this.
Yes, they're the guys who made Transitor (amazing game)
I've bought it and I like it so far. Usually games like this send me into a friggin rage but I like how I keep unlocking little pieces of the story when I die. And I always give puppers a pet too.
Mutter Buffin have fun. Prioritize keys so you can experiment with the other weapons for different play styles and also skill upgrades first. That cheat death one is useful. You can turn on god mode for a permanent defense buff after each failed attempt too if you’re struggling.
when you got that sweet spot of a build. In just one to two moves, chaos throughout the screen.
Supergiant is honestly the best indie dev in the world IMO. Every game they've made is amazing, and Hades is no exception. They just get better and better with each game.
After 20 min, I kind of prefer dead cells because it feels like repetitive, but the controls are tight and it looks great so I'm gonna dive in.
I know I've barely played it lol
Im always not sure I feel like playing dead cells, but once I start, the next thing I know it's a week later and I feel like I need to play more if I'm going to get the next upgrade or blueprint 🥺
I love how it sucks me in and I completely stop thinking about anything else in life, that's the effect I recognize in all great games, and its not limited to genres, botw was the same way with me.
Great review, appreciate the thoroughness as always guys!
You said you prefer Dead Cells because it feels repetative?? Forgive me but isn't that what Roguelikes/lites are all about?? I don't see Hades being any different than Dead Cells for repetition. Just saying!
I'm glad I grabbed this on Friday. I can't put my Switch down. This game is amazing.
I really like Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre so seeing them go for a roguelite just means I can play this a lot more
I really like the studio's other titles, might pick it up at some point.
(First, I gotta shrink that backlog a bit... Futile endeavour, I know)
Hehehe good luck with that mate! Mark
This game is amazeballs, not really got into Dead Cells, this is off the charts. I’ve barely scratched the surface, not even beat Meg yet.😂
Finally a game on the Switch again that i feel drawn to. Thanks for presenting it!
You're most welcome Robert! Mark
@@SwitchUpYt ah yes, an honorable mention goes to Ori. You guys are doing are great job, please keep it up, and Glen please never bother to let go of your Cockney accent ;)
Second you said "Dead Cells" I'm in! What a game that was. Possibly one of my favourites of all time.
My fingers are numb from playing this game till 5 am and when I woke up from a nap my arms, wrists and fingers hurt like hell.
What a great review!! The best review that I’ve seen of this game - thorough and clear! Downloaded this today and love it so far!
Thanks Jamie that's kind of you to say! Mark
It’s really annoying to see people complain about no co op in these type of games like that’s not normal
This and Dead Cells fixed what I always found annoying about rogue likes, it starts fast paced and you feel powerful right at the start, there's no need to grind until the third level hoping RNJesus gives you that sweet weapon.
Even Enter The Gungeon, while a fun game, know how annoying this is to the point of giving you the option of jumping stages through the elevator and getting two random weapons each time. It sucked starting it over and over killing those bullet sponge enemies until you get a decent gun!
Dont forget, it also has an easy mode for those not wanting to git good. I dont know how easy of difficult it is though
I'm in love with this game. The gameplay is fun and despite constantly dying, you still feel like you're making progress, even in the story.
I'm so happy they brought it to Switch.
Bought it a couple of days ago because of this review. It's amazing, haven't had so much fun in a long while
I’ve never been attracted to the concept of “Roguelikes”, but Supergiant is one of the few developers I trust to produce great games. I purchased it as soon as it was for sale. Once I get through a few other games, I’ll definitely be giving it a try.
I was honestly feeling you were speaking directly to my 100+ games backlog with that sorry ass apology...😅
With games that look this good, to hell with the backlog, yeah? This one's goin' in the bag.
Thanks for sharing this, great review as usual!
Hehehe you're most welcome mate! Mark
Granted I’m playing on pc as I got it about 6 months ago but I keep coming back with new updates and I’m in love with it every time.
I hope you’re review is good cause i literally just bought it...it’s downloading now!
Ok good you’re review reassures me
How did I do? Mark
SwitchUp excellent job makes me really look forward to play it
This has been one of my favorite games since dead cell, it’s like it but not at the same time
It’s on sale for 20, buy it now. The voice acting is amazing. The story is interesting. You would think it would be uninteresting but you can gift people things and gain hearts. There’s a codex book after a few deaths. Honestly you have to die a couple of times to advance the story and it’s brilliant because it leaves you with a sense of moving in the game even though you died and have to start over. Honestly I might join this games cult. I can’t gush about it enough
picked it yesterday and I absolutely agree with your review. one hell of a game, one of the best on switch
Supergiant is one of my favorite developers and hades is another killer game. Might be my favorite yet
I hate rogue like games, I love this game. Playing for 4 hours now, can't stop. Great review as always btw.
+1 for The Boys reference.
Was looking forward to a review of this since I saw it on the direct. Added it to my wish list because my backlog is too big right now.
What a game! TBH I've never latched on to rogue-like games, but I'm a huge Diablo fan. Hades is a perfect marriage of the two. The mechanics are solid, and the RNG build combinations are intelligent. The weapon variety is amplified by buffs that switch the way you use each one. The persistent trinket system is well integrated. One of my favourite Switch games so far, at a fair price. 9/10
Mate at work recommended this to me tonight. Ordered the physical edition, don't mind paying the premium. Looks good! Arriving tonight!
Been playing the shit outa West of dead and i love it. Less see if this can pull me away
The game is not procedurally generated. All the chambers are custom made, they just appear randomly.
Argh! This is the third glowing review. Fine...I’ll go download now 😂 Thanks guys, great review!
Really really really want this one. But the backlog and game budget surveys say *insert catchphrase negative tone here* 😂 added to the ever growing wish list 🥴 top review again! Added kudos for watching The Boys 🤣
Me: I wont buy Hades. I think it's not for me.
*Watches review and knowing it came from the same developer of Bastion and Transistor

Thanks for the great review, I've now added it to my wishlist.... It looks like it plays a little like Hyper Light Drifter and I loved that game...
A week that included two shadow drops and both fantastic games.
When I first saw this game I was like .. ehh it looks pretty cool but idk..
But after seeing what it's all about and watching a few videos of people playing it, WOW.. I'm getting this as soon as i can. It's really awesome. I CAN'T wait to play this!!!
You'll love it
Mate, been playing this game since it came out early access on Steam, love this game!!! Was expecting the game to drop later this year on Switch, instant buy!
Great review and great game. One thing I learned from the making of documentary is that each room is hand built. There are no procedurally generated rooms.
