I’ve been doing deep litter for just over a year. My one coop was quite large and I actually didn’t clean it over that time span and there was zero smell. I use hemp bedding. Unfortunately hurricane Helene came through and dropped a huge pine tree on that coop and split it in half 😢 luckily I have 2 coops and only lost one chicken. Still in the process of rebuilding the run… Your coop is beautiful!
I’m sorry you lost your coop! That’s rough. I hope you’re able to rebuild and get it just the way you want it. I’m curious about hemp bedding; I haven’t tried it. I think my coop is a bit small for 10 birds (I had planned on only having 8 when we built it). It’s good to know that a really large coop meant you could leave the bedding for a year.
You may want to cut insulation plugs for your screen windows. That way when it gets extremely cold you can close these off and protect your chicken’s combs.
We have had backyard chickens for over a year. Started with 14 but lost one of the Black Copper Marans 😔😔 Have used the deep litter method exclusively and love it. Our girls are not scratching around in it either. Your blue eggs are beautiful! What breed is laying them? Love your channel 👏👏
Thanks! You must be getting a looot of eggs with 13 hens. The blue eggs come from our Easter Eggers. We also have Olive Eggers that lay the light green eggs. I love having colorful eggs.

Thanks! That's a good call; we really need to think through the winter, because I know we'll need to change some of their care. It's coming up soon.
