@@email5023 They rented an apartment there (possibly Jagger's own place) while recording portions of Houses of the Holy. I guess they took a picture of the building, then decided to use it for something.
One of the guys hanging out on the stoop with Mick Jagger is the late Peter Tosh who played lead guitar in The Wailers along side Bob Marley. He's the guy Keith Richards shakes hands with when he shows up. The sax solo in this song is played by jazz great Sonny Rollins.
Rollins is the guy sitting behind Mick. The guy next to Rollins is former Santana percussionist Michael Carabello. All three played on the song, though Tosh went uncredited due to contractual stuff.
@@Unlitedsoul Don’t think Tosh had anything to do with this track which was cut years before in 1972 with Mick Taylor. The musicians listed on it were the Stones 1972 period plus Nicky Hopkins on piano. Sonny Rollins overdubbed the sax and they guy you mentioned added percussion. The sax and piano were added just before the 1981 release. Tosh was not in the Stones orbit in 1972. It was years later when he signed to their label.
@@flyingburritobro68 November 25, 1972, the Stones entered Dynamic Sound Studios in Kingston, Jamaica to begin work on Goats Head Soup. They would spend 3 weeks on and off recording in Jamaica before going to LA. This was where they recorded the initial work for Waiting on a Friend (and several other songs). Marley and Tosh were also in Dynamic Sounds until early December completing the final mix of Catch a Fire so that Marley could rush it back to London and Columbia Records for distribution. Tosh, as well as Bunny Wailer, remained in Jamaica until a legal dispute around the album involving Island Records and Columbia was resolved and the band was cleared to tour in April 1973. Keith Richards stated that quite a few Jamaican musicians were brought into the studio... including "that guy across the hall". Mick would state at the time of signing Tosh to the Rolling Stones label in 1978 that it was working with him on those sessions that caught their eyes and made them all wish to work with both him and Bob Marley in the future. So, maybe Tosh didn't work on the song... or the album years later, but Mick and Keith allude to his being there.
The video, shot in July 1981, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg (who also directed their 1968 special ), became very popular on MTV. Matching the song's lyrics, Jagger is seen waiting for Keith Richards in the doorway of an apartment block. The building, at 96-98 St. Mark's Place in Manhattan, is notable for having also appeared on the cover of Led Zeppelin's 1975 album . The two then walk down the street and enter the St. Mark's Bar & Grill where the other three band members are already drinking. Ronnie Wood appears in the video, although he was not a musician on the original recording. Jagger sings the song to Richards and the video concludes with the band setting up for a gig at the back of the bar, largely ignored by the other patrons.

The building Mick is waiting at during the first half of the video or so is an apartment block called St. Mark's Place that In the 60s-70s was commonly used as a rental for musicians recording at Electric Ladyland and other studios in the area. They filmed this video, while still working on completing the Tatoo You album, much of which they recorded at Electric Ladyland. The three guys sitting with him are backing musicians/vocalists featured on the album. The same building is featured as the cover art for Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti album. They stayed there as well while recording portions of Houses of the Holy in 1972. It has been speculated that Mick may have had an apartment in that building for as much as 15 years, and that several of his friends used it while working in New York.

@@gregorykrug8034 lol I became a fan in 1981 and soon became convinced that I would never see them because they were breaking up...8 years later I saw them the first time on Steel Wheels Tour (best concert I ever saw by anyone) and a couple of hours later, at home in my driveway with my buddy we were decompressing the whole night and it dawned on me that after waiting so long, I'd FINALLY seen them......but now it's over and they were surely going to retire and I'll never see them AGAIN 🤣🤣🤣...I saw them 3 more tours lol.
A light hearted tune which brings to mind that these guys have been friends their whole career, including a couple of them since grade school. 60+ years of friendship especially among rock band mates is something incredible and special.
Long Live The Rolling Stones.
I think what he's trying to say is , that friendship , is more important than a sexual encounter with a beautiful woman. A Friend is an Amazing thing to have.
Thank you!
A smile relieves a heart that grieves....favorite line from a favorite song
“Can’t you hear me knockin” and “monkey man” you should try out soon
Santana 's cover of this song is a Favorite of mine 😊 Can't you hear me knocking 🔥
Agreed
Great Rolling Stones song, definitely one of their best by far!!! Glad you brought this one up for us to hear!! Thanks Jamel aka Jamal for your great reactions, and the great tunes of yesteryear... keeping coming, were all here to listen. Your one of the few that do the best reactions!!! ❣️🖤❣️🖤🎶🎶🎶
Someday soon, we need to ask ourselves: what kind of world are we leaving behind for Keith Richards?
😂
This is a gem
Is he still alive?🤣🤣
@@glennfjenkins2702 ye of course he is! He’ll outlive us all!
🤣
I'm a child of the 70's and 80's- this is my favorite Stones song- just a cool, chill vibe. Takes me back- Thank you!
Always appreciated how my friends enhance my life...this song emulates that for all. ❤
Pure talent from the greatest band of all time and a song about just hanging out with the buddies.
The jazz legend - Sonny Rollins - on sax.
He made great music with them!
Indeed he is. There is cute story that Mick and Charlie tell about hiring Sonny. He intimidated them a bit. After all, the guys a legend. But they went a head and asked. The rest is history. For me, his sax part at the end just makes the tune..
One of my favorite Stones songs. A ton of great memories tied to this.
Always loved this song! The sitting on the steps portion of this video always reminded me of Sesame Street (my mind tho😂) In the back of my mind, I'm always kind of "waiting" on Big Bird to shuffle by in the mix of people strolling down the sidewalk! Thanks for doing this song, and for being a positive soul💕 If you haven't listened to "Shattered" yet, please consider it. Have a great week!
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?
Old school Sesame Street vibe ABSOLUTELY..... It's almost like it would've been normal to see Keith run in to Big Bird while Snuffy visits Mick on the step hanging with the local Rastafarians.........The old metal garbage can nearby flips open and Oscar pops out when Keith and Big Bird arrive to greet all singing the song together.... :) Hell yes....
@@jesseregenauer630 Right tho?
This has always been one of my favorites Stones songs and videos.
The one person that thumb's down this reaction must still be waiting on their friend.
😂⬆️😂
Or a lady 🤣
@@ozman9353 Definitely a lady... though they may be waiting for a lifetime.
One of the stones most layed back sings ever! I love them!
As someone noted thats not Ronnie Wood playing on the song, but Mick Taylor. The Stones were in their prime with Taylor. Just my opinion, but yeah, I'm right. ;)
Thank you. This has always been one of my favorite Stones tracks, and I'm glad you got a chance to hear it.
Watching girls passing by, it ain't the latest thing
I'm just standing in a doorway
I'm just trying to make some sense
Out of these girls passing by, the tales they tell of men
I'm not waiting on a lady
I'm just waiting on a friend
A smile relieves a heart that grieves, remember what I said
I'm not waiting on a lady
I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend
Just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah
Don't need a whore
I don't need no booze
Don't need a virgin priest
But I need some one I can cry to
I need someone to protect
Ooh, making love and breaking hearts, it is a game for youth
But I'm not waiting on a lady
I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend
Just waiting on a friend
Waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend, waiting on a friend
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah
Jagger's lyrics for this song are amazing. I love the lines "I need someone I can cry to, I need someone to protect". That is a very special friend to have.
Yes that is a friend.
I was standing right outside that bar when the Stones arrived to record the video. It was like 5 in the morning. The long gone St Marks Bar and Grill
Taking me right back to my high school years 😎
My first concert ever...Rolling Stones. headline...with ZzTop and Fabulous Thunderbirds at Houston Astrodome. Tattoo You tour....awesome
Not a Stones fan...but I LOVE this song. My favorite from them.
This is one of my top 3 Rolling Stones songs. I love the sentiment behind it, it's not about romance, it's about the power and importance of friendship.
I've always thought it was just a bromance song to a dear, dear friend. Mick waiting for Keith so they can 🎸 jam.
A smile relieves a heart that grieves . . . Truth.
Peter Tosh on the stairs. ☮️
Tosh and Jagger had that smash hit "Walk and Don't Look Back" together. Great track.
@@MacSvensson yes I believe he played in the barbarians on a couple tunes also with Richards and Wood
Greatest band ever. Still at the top of my bucket list, have missed 2 concerts, here's still hoping!!!!
I’d say they all appear to be lit, for real .
Yeah, they’re all three sheets to the wind in this video!
man...thanks so much for this one Jamel. This was one of my Dad's favs, he'd play it a ton always in to the sax solo. Dad passed summer of 2018 from a long battle with cancer. Brings back some good memories. Much love.
The tall cool blonde that walks by while Mick is sitting on the stoop is his girlfriend, the model Jerry Hall .
They been friends and a band since the 60's. Them is his folk. Real love
Jagger waited for Richards sitting in the front door of the very same building that appears in the Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti album cover. Meanwhile Peter Tosh is smoking a big joint sitting on Jagger’s side 😅
This would have been after Mick Jagger's duet with Peter Tosh on "Walk And Don't Look Back". Peter recorded his album 'Bush Doctor' on Rolling Stones records.
Did *not* realize it was Peter Tosh!
Wow; I had no idea. It was so cool when Peter Tosh was the musical guest on a 1979 episode of "Saturday Night Live" and Mick Jagger just showed-up right in the middle of one of his songs and sung the rest of the song with him.
Yes
When I watch this video, I can't help but ponder how long these guys have known each other and the depth of their connection. It's a great tribute to their friendship!
Peter Tosh was a founding member of The Wailers. He went solo after their 3rd album for Island records. He was close friends with the Stones who owned property and frequently recorded in Jamaica.
@Christopher Ross Huh?
This is my favorite Stones song. It's perfect.
Well, that's one of the buildings that was used for Led Zepplin's "Physical Graffiti" album cover, for what it's worth.
And that was Sonny Rollins on the sax (and on the steps), with Peter Tosh and a Santana drummer.
"one of the buildings"? The ONLY building. Buttnut!
This song is one of my all time favorites! Thanks Jamel!
Undercover of the Night (is a great song by them that might get overlooked) (i almost forgot) too many to mention, here's a few more;
Start Me Up
Under My Thumb
Reminds me of those nights where you are not looking for a romance, just a good time with your buds! It's refreshing sometimes!
"The least Rolling Stones sounding song ever". It's still awesome. This song is so damn chill. Oh BTW, I'm still gonna plug Fingerprint File and Dead Flowers, until you do it. I'm a persistent SOB.
Thank you for this great reaction.
@@joeycarter8846 What?! He hasn't done Angie yet either? Next you'll say he hasn't done Tumbling Dice or Moonlight Mile. Just playin'. Damn the Stones have so many. Apparently they've gone and done a shit ton of official lyric videos. Just watched She's a Rainbow the other day. I'm like wow, some guy is really getting paid to put these all together. Nice.
Good night
Sleep tight
Fingerprint File for sure! Funky AF!
Dead Flowers for sure. And Monkey Man!
God Bless The Stones. Great reaction. I love when Mick and Keith walked past the album art of their album Tattoo You on the wall. Yeah.
Mick and Kieth had a slight falling out in the late 70's this song was about them burying the hatchet sort of speak at least that was the story back in the day ✌️🧡
So much good music, from this iconic band. Thanks for the reaction❤️❤️❤️
Oh the Mick Taylor years, the Stones at their best.
The Rolling Stones are the greatest rock band ever....Case closed ! Started in early 60's, and they are still going strong today !
This song gets better and better with each listen. So good on the headphones. Great choice tonight! ❤️
Now that Lemmy is dead, after a nuclear war it will only be oaks, roaches and Keith left haha
Stones version of Love in Vain, a cover of a Robert Johnson tune is awesome
Dope. I love watching you vibe with this. Great song. RIP Charlie.
If you love this you’ll also love their song “Beast of Burden”
This is so classic I love seeing them just kicking back early 1980s 🎼🎹New York token a joint on a staircase 😁😁😀☘️
Jamel aka Jamal, can I request that you take a listen to "Can You Hear Me Knockin'" by the Stones, next? Asking for a friend...
@@marymargaretmoore9034 Are you sure? I'm not seeing it...
@@joemaurone7923 Joe, I could be wrong; let's ask him to do it.
Great song. The saxaphone is so iconic for this track, that you can t imagine the song had been written without it .
Jimmy Cliff “Many Rivers to Cross “
Soul Asylum “Runaway Train”
Definitely Soul Asylum! Growing up in Minneapolis, they played their stuff on a alt rock station all the time. “Black Gold” is one of my favorites of theirs.
YAYYYYYY one of my FAVE Stones songs!!!!!!!!!!
That whole album, "Tattoo You" is lit.
Amazing album cover too
Not bad for a bunch of old leftovers...some great stuff
Had it when it was new, got rid of it when vinyl wasn't cool anymore and just bought it again last week!
@@jeffpeterson1331 I see it as a kind of Goat's Head Soup pt. 2.
My favourite Stones album. Not the 'coolest' Stones album, but it is the best.
Man I love ❤️ this song so much. Great music and video. Stones are incredible 👏
Ooooh I been waiting for this one - yay!
This has always been one of my favorite Stones songs and it's been eons since I last saw the video, so thanks for the blast from the past Jamel!!!
Jamel, their "Jumpin' Jack Flash" "Tumblin' Dice" and "She's So Cold" are next for you!
I've always loved this track ever sinced it came out.
Back in my dart throwing days. Love it!
In this song, they do relax the sax and the melody to coalesce with the casual day with friends. 🌷 🌿
Icons & Legends.
Did his friend ever show up?
Bono still hasn't't found what he's looking for since 1987!
Always thought U2 was Overrated.
😂😂😂
I think it’s a song about friendship. Great seeing Mick and Keith and Ronnie, just pals having a drink together in a bar. We all need our friends.
Tattoo You is packed with great tracks
Isn't that the truth! Hang Fire comes to mind. Do not recall If One Hit to the Body is one of the tracks on that album but an underrated 80s gem from the Stones with an interesting video since apparently Mick and Keith really weren't getting along at that point.
Little T&A is a great track on that album too. Keith sings on that one
Dude...The Stones have soooo many great tunes. You will enjoy the trip down Stones street!!!!!
I don't get it. Jagger dances like your drunk uncle at a wedding and is still the coolest guy in the room.
Hahaha! 😂
He's not looking for a one night stand, he's looking for a real relationship, someone who he can call his friend.
Love this song, especially the sax by jazz colossus, Sonny Rollins! His playing elevates an already good song.
