To be “under one's thumb” means to be under that person's control. In this song, Mick Jagger has turned the tables on a girl who used to push him around, so now she's under his thumb and the “sweetest pet in the world.”

Brian Jones was the Rolling stones secret weapon in the 1960's. He played so many different instruments. He played; slide guitar, harmonica, dulcimer, mellotron, sitar, keyboards, etc... Here he is playing the marimbas.

Brian Jones on the Marimbas there. Just one of the many legendary imprints he made on their early music using whatever instrument came to hand (try Ruby Tuesaday next to hear him on the recorder). Definitely a nod to Motown here using a James Jamerson bass riff as the engine for this one. Love the underplayed guitar solo, too. Another good one from this era is 'I am waiting.'

I love the band’s creative ingenuity, exploration of different musical forms, and in-studio experimentation during the Brian Jones era. As songwriters, they started to hit their stride with Aftermath (1966). Still, they also made some of their most antithetical Stones material (as heard with their forays into Baroque Pop and Psychedelia) in the Jones era. It's just a brilliantly creative period for the group.

Hello La & Che, great reaction. I enjoy listening to the RS earlier tunes, they're style and sound underwent significant changes in the 1960's. The Stones were passionate about blues music, and they helped to introduce a wider audience to its sound in the 60's. Mick Jagger and Kieth Richards became one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of all time. It was wonderful meeting your daughter's La & Che, they are very beautiful and appear to have both their father's love for music. I hope we get to see them react to something else in future. Here's another suggestion for another song from the same album, if interested. "The Rolling Stones - Mother's Little Helper (Official Lyric Video)" (by the channel: ABKCOVEVO) --The Rolling Stones describes this album "Aftermath" as one of the best albums to demonstrates their diverse range of styles and showcase their musical prowess and experimentational skills. As always, I enjoyed the reaction thanks for sharing. peace out~

As for the Beatles, Lennon was a textbook case of someone who recognized he had a problem, and evolved. They even addressed it in "Getting Better":
I used to be cruel to my woman
I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved
Man, I was mean but I'm changing my scene

The cut was from "Aftermath" (1965), the band's first album cut at RCA Studios in Hollywood. It was also their first album solely comprised of original material. They had help from arranger Jack Nitzsche (he played piano on "Flight 505" and "Doncha Bother Me," and probably rounded up the marimba that Brian Jones plays on "Under My Thumb") and engineer Dave Hassinger. But the record is all about groove.

Everybody pretty much acknowledges Jagger as a world class "frontman" and everybody thinks about his moves on stage, but I think he kinda gets overlooked sometimes as a vocalist. For somebody whose most famous strength was his outrageousness and flamboyance, this is a very nuanced vocal performance...

    • @fuchsiaswing8545
      @fuchsiaswing8545 5 місяців тому

I think the people who demean his vocal prowess are primarily casual listeners who have not explored much of the band’s oeuvre. No one can listen to “Let it Loose,” “Shine a Light,” “I Got the Blues,” “Moonlight Mile,” or “Sister Morphine” and tell me Jagger is a lousy singer.

A bit of irony- Mick is sporting an Eagles jersey which he wore on the opening of the tour at JFK stadium in Philly, September 1981. We skipped school (it was a Friday) and they opened with Under my Thumb👍

I've been a die hard Stones fan since they played on the Ed Sullivan show in 64 or 65 or whenever - there are so many songs of theirs I like it would be hard to pick a top-5 or top-10 but I think Under My Thumb is in that conversation. I had the Hot Rocks greatest hits album on 8-track in my '72 Dodge Challenger and Under My Thumb got a lot of play while me and my homies were cruising.

Ha - that's funny. It was red with a while top and white interior. It was the first new car I bought. I couldn't afford the 340 or 383 package so I ended up getting the small block 318. It was still a sweet ride - especially when cruising with the Stones blasting. 🙂@@tomrockwood851

Under my thumb is simply an idiom that means under someone's control or influence. Again, I’m sorry that I don’t know who’s who, but the guy in the Bulls hat pointed at his left ear at one point during the chorus and if I’m not wrong I think you were trying to make reference to the sound of Keith Richards fuzz bass which is played during each chorus… masterful 💥

Great reactions to songs and groups I grew up listening to. Some other Stones songs you might like - "Stray Cat Blues" Beggars banquet album. "Sway" - Sticky Fingers Album. "Hand of Fate" Black & Blue Album. "if you can't rock me" and "Luxury" off of Its only Rock & roll Album.
Not sure if you are aware but Keith Richards was a heavy heroin addict during the years of the Stones best music. He Was flown away to Switzerland on several occasions to rehab at a clinic, getting blood transfusions to clean his blood of the heroin.

Aftermath was a smash of an album. Many great songs -- especially Goin' Home which DJs only played late at night because it was over 11 minutes long. Just the thing to listen to on your way home from your Friday or Saturday night date.
