    If anyone is wondering why they re-uploaded check 5:05.
    The last video said the "center of our universe" Now it says the "center of our galaxy".
    Correcting those small errors. Good Job DNews!

    WE FIXED IT!!! There was an error at 5:05 where our VO person misspoke, saying center of the UNIVERSE rather than GALAXY. It's all better now, and thanks for keeping a watchful eye on us, y'all!!

      Center of the universe, center of the galaxy...toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe, what's the big difference? ha ha.
      But seriously though, could you make a video on why the point in space where the little golf ball sized mass that contained all the condensed matter of the universe and supposedly exploded during the Big Bang, is not a place that we can point to and say that is the point in space where the golf ball sized mass exploded and where the Big Bang started from, and is the center of the universe that all the galaxies are moving away from in a general spherical fireball shape? I heard that that is not the case, and that there is no center to the universe, but I could never understand that and it always makes my mind explode.

    • @kaelanirevyruun1676
      @kaelanirevyruun1676 8 років тому +1

      @Joey I think the issue isn't so much the mirror's size as it would be getting the *surface* of the mirror to be perfectly level across the entire thing

      +Bob actually there is a huge difference between the center of our galaxy and the center of the universe so... There are some good videos on other science channels, PBS scishow I think?, explaining (better than I ever could) why really everywhere is the point where the universe exploded into existence from a single point. But yeaaa glad to see you have an interest in science; keep thinking about it and one day you'll have a lightbulb go off

    Question:
    How do they know that the telescopes provide an error-free image of whatever they are looking at? I mean, how can they be sure that the information they get from object at massive distance from us is not incorrect because of a telescope failure (maybe when it was built, maybe mechanical failure, maybe software error...)

    The light beams in the VLT interferometer, or any other optical interferometer, are not combined "using a computer". Optical interferometers combine light using mirrors, beam splitters and a high precision mechanical apparatus. It is true that the apparatus is controlled by computers, but the light combining is accomplished using the optical and mechanical components. The story is different for radio telescopes. With radio interferometers, specialized digital computers are fast enough to simulate the interferometric process through computation. Radio telescopes do not need a physical interferometer.

    If they could image the event horizon they should also be able to resolve the accretion disc around the black hole, that would probably be more useful than the event horizon as they could observe material actually being dragged into the black hole, which would tell us lots about the way its gravity distorts stuff.

    • @uteriel282
      @uteriel282 8 років тому +1

      sagittarius a doesnt have a disc around it.
      it was estimated that only about 1 solar mass of matter is "eaten" by the black hole per year.
      astronomers have been observing it for a while now and found out that there isnt really much going on at the center of our galaxy.

    I wonder: could they try and image the black hole against the Cosmic Microwave Background?
    Because the CMB is present in all directions, wouldn't the black hole appear as an actual black spot on the CMB?
    Maybe the CMB frequencies do not allow for sufficiently detailed imaging?

  • @Christian-Rankin
    @Christian-Rankin 8 років тому +3

    Damn, it's crazy to think that it would take 30,000 years , AT THE VERY LEAST, to reach that thing with a probe, assuming everything goes well lol

    • @wrathofpain5
      @wrathofpain5 8 років тому

      It would take longer than that since anything that has mass cannot travel at the speed of light. You are looking at many times that amount of time.

    • @Christian-Rankin
      @Christian-Rankin 8 років тому

      +Brandon Toft hence why I put "AT THE VERY LEAST" in all caps in the hopes that no one would feel the need to tell me that about something everyone already knows...

      @wrathofpain5 8 років тому +1

      Christian Rankin
      Yes but you said with a probe. Probes have mass. Therefore it would not be "AT THE VERY LEAST" because that would not be possible no matter how technologically advanced we become.

    I've already seen footage of this in a way. While not actually "seeing" the black hole, they showed you all these suns flying around this invisible mark in the centre of the picture, they were even excited about a gas cloud they saw was going to get sucked in and hoped to see expulsions, so what's this video all about?

    I would argue that LIGO directly observed the collision of two black holes, and thus directly observed black-holes unlike what the video said near the beginning. I will admit that we have never seen one using light but then again it is a BLACK hole.

    I realize the sentimental significance of viewing the black hole at the center of our galaxy, however wouldn't it be easier to try and view the black hole at the center of other galaxies? That way we don't have to try and look through the billions of stars that are between us and the center of the Milky Way, and instead look through empty space at a galaxy whose plane of rotation is perpendicular to us? I would suggest andromeda but i have no clue of its orientation relative to us.

    • @foreverofthestars4718

      +Uteriel true, but still, don't all the stars between us and Sagittarius A make it nearly impossible to see?

  • @sonicpwr
    @sonicpwr 8 років тому

    Saying we have not detected a black hole before is incredibly misleading. We know from the orbit of objects around black holes that something emitting no light and with incredible mass must exist there. We have also detected waves propagating out from the black holes. If you don't count gravitational waves, fine, but in that case why would you settle for light emitted from the outside of the event horizon?
    Nothing against this observatory or what they are trying to accomplish, we can still learn a lot about black holes. I just don't like when people try to hype new by discrediting the old.
