Health insurance is just 80 euro per month so it's actually quite cheap. If ur registered as unemployed person, state will pay for your healt insurance so it's free. Also even if you don't pay your insurance you will get most things done anyway in state hospitals...
Just a few more comments: you will also receive 829,86 € as a contribution from the state to every newborn (after he/she reaches an age of 1 month) and the maternity leave is not 6 months but 34 weeks, which is quite a bit longer :) And then of course your partner can go to the "paternity leave" which is paid to max. 28 weeks which I highly recommend to use if you can. I have done this when our little one was born and I could get quite a bit of money back from the state. Cheers!

My husband is Slovak and my sisters-in-laws actually said to me a lot about labor and obs in Slovakia and of course about overall health care. They are hugely under stuffed, so they are burned out. Also salary is not so good, here in Czechia we have better salary and more stuff in hospital and still we need more. According to my in laws exp. They will do what's necessary to save life but that's all, no help with breastfeeding, baby taken away. They didn't show them how to change diaper, just sand them home with paper where they say that they did that. I guess this happened because they need more people. Also with my firstborn I had slovak PA and she said that she has less hours and twice amount of money here in Czechia. This is huge problem of Slovak Healthcare system.

I am British but live in Bratislava and I agree with you about how weird it is that we are expected to find our specialists especially considering that you need a specialist for virtually everything and that your GP does very little for you other than write you the slip to see the specialist! In the UK your GP deals with virtually everything but this means that a lot of things are missed in the early stages and aren't caught until they are a bigger issue and this isn't helped by the fact that GP surgeries are often massive, with many GPs under one roof, so you rarely see the same doctor twice meaning that repeat issues are not spotted. I have seen this first hand with my ear issues that have very much been seen here and something that was always written off in the UK has been dealt with really well here. Also, the UK has the NHS where everyone gets care that is free at the point of entry but the system has been woefully underfunded since 2010 and the government has silently privatised a lot of the more profitable services which has meant much greater waiting lists and more difficulty to access treatments. I used to be very afraid of being sick in Slovakia but having seen my friend have amazing care for breast cancer and having found treatment for everything I need recently I have come to appreciate the health care here in SK. I have been here for 11 years and it has taken me this long to work out how to navigate the system and now that I speak a reasonable amount of Slovak it does make it much easier. The health care system here is not in any way set up to support non-Slovak speakers so if you don't speak the language you very much need the support of a Slovak speaker and we just need to make our peace with that! Another point that is kept very quiet is that everyone in Slovakia is entitled to a GP, dentist and all women get a gynaecologist and all children get a paediatrician and these are given by address and the one assigned to us cannot say no to accepting us, although they will try!!! Each region has a website where we can search by address. However, there are no guarantees that you will like the one assigned to you and we are free to shop around for better. I have a GP who turned out to speak English, a great gynaecologist who I only got because my lovely mother-in-law begged her to accept me and a dentist where the insurance company will pay for my basic care but who offer a lot of private services and are far better and more modern than anything I ever had in the UK. I genuinely think paediatric care is fantastic here - so much care for the children. The hospitals look shabby but the healthcare itself is really good once you find it and much better than the UK for preventative care. IMO, the single thing that would improve Slovak healthcare is paying the staff more so that the young doctors and nurses don't complete their training here and then leave for other countries where they paid more which would make the staff younger, more progressive, more willing to keep up to date with new information. Personally, I would prefer to have people rewarded financially for the life and death decisions that they have to make on a daily basis!
I knew it! I wish you and the baby you are with all the best, and as a father I understand how hard it can sometimes be to do all the medical stuff in this new situation for you. From my own experience, the doctors here are *OK*, some are better, some worse, but those we met during my wife's pregnancy were just excellent. We didn't have a single bad experience during that time (not mentioning we had to go through a few years long treatment of infertility problems of our both, which fortunately lead to our beautiful daughter.). And first six month matternity leave for instance if u earn brutto around average wage in Bratislava ca what is over 1600 euro so 1200 euro will be your matternity leave income from gouvernament for first 6 month.

Also if you manage to have another baby during those 3 years then your maternity leave starts again. For example if you've been on maternity leave for 2 years and you have 1 year left, and today you gave a birth to second baby, then from now on you have again 3 years of maternity leave and not just one. You can of course end it sooner, but since we strongly believe, that it's healthy for the baby to be with a mother for first 3 years, we give this oportunity for mothers to stay home.
Congratulations on the baby! I think you have a similar situation as in Czech Republic, health insurance is cross subsidised so (if employed) you pay a percentage of your salary and the service you get is independent of what you pay. It's much easier to see your GP here in Prague than in my native UK.

Hi Kim - each country health system has some pros and cons as well . I am longer living in Canada and health system is dependant from province to province. While living in Ontario all health care I had free and with special benefits I could have some kind of higher level. For example when my wife got surgery from my special benefits she could have private room with phone TV and I could be with her 24 h/d . On the other hand while I had injury I had to wait in emergency room 4 Hours !!! In that time I remember when I was with my son in hospital emergency ( Kramare Slovakia during still communist system) and I had to wait 15 minutes I was so upset for health care system !!! ... After years living in Ontario I moved to west province British Columbia and here even with special health bonus from employer I had to pay for each action from 20 to 40 % cash !!! For example front tooth crone I had to pay $600! After retirement while searching for health care insurance I found it is so expansive I can't afford it from my pension ( my pension is not in low level on Canadian condition) ! BTW I can just remind you Philippine health system is not so great - my ex-father in law ( in Manilla) when he got sick -early cancer stage and needed Xray - I had to financial help to get it - later familiar situation occurred when he needed surgical treatment.... Finally I want congratulate to expected baby - wishing good health and future for all your family

Congratulation Kim! When baby comes to family, it is the most beatiful thing to happen... :) I already have 2 kids... so if you needed anything I can share what I know/have. I also collected baby clothes, utensils, stroller... and lot of it is unisex.. bcs I have boy and girl :) if you need advaice... the first thing you should do when you go to monthly check-up is have a calendar and always know in which week you are in, bcs doctors are lazy and doesn't check or when they type it to the PC (which is pretty new thing in slovakia and these doctors who are still in ambulances, are the doctors who are strong enough/brave enough to learn how to actually work with PC :DDD) so they ask things which you already told them a few times.. so be patient... :DDDD Another thing is, that when you will be in 30 week you need to go to ANY hospital to assign yourself in.. bcs from 34 week of pregnancy your visits in doctors ambulance will be weekly and in hospital YOU chose for yourself to give a birth in... Lot of ppl usually give birth in Bratislava... some reccomend Ružinovská nemocnica. I reccomend Antolská... I gave birth there twice and it was great, the porsonnal was kind enough for me.... some moms which they gave birth for first time were horriefied by stuff, but all moms who was there with second (or more) children were satisfied, some was telling it was like in hotel :D they bring food into your room, they clean up for you, for first shower after giving birth, doctor/nurse asists you.. personal in Antolska was kind, at least to me.. :) if you want some detailed info, I can give you my FB name or Whatsapp.. or I'm on discord too.. I already helped my half japanese friend so I gladly help to another person I well :)))))

Go to the uk and you will see what is awfull. My slovak experience is great . Never gave anything to anyone, stuff was always great. It all depend on people as well as slovaks are rude cunts and they behave like that, then they expect great service and behaviour. Same in any service...
From what I heard Canada doesn't have exactly the best healthcare, too. I'm just glad that we are not overprised as US. But yeah, we could do better 😅.
Expensive doctors? hahah... further west visit to public GP will cost you 50eur and specialist 200Eur in public hospital and you get nothig solved...just to put you on 12months waiting list...and there is just 1 screening during whole pregnancy...
I had to wait 13 months in the UK. My GP kept prescribing medication before they even bothered to find out what's wrong. It's really not that bad in Slovakia in comparison with other European countries.

Hi Kim - each country health system has some pros and cons as well . I am longer living in Canada and health system is dependant from province to province. While living in Ontario all health care I had free and with special benefits I could have some kind of higher level. For example when my wife got surgery from my special benefits she could have private room with phone TV and I could be with her 24 h/d . On the other hand while I had injury I had to wait in emergency room 4 Hours !!! In that time I remember when I was with my son in hospital emergency ( Kramare Slovakia during still communist system) and I had to wait 15 minutes I was so upset for health care system !!! ...
After years living in Ontario I moved to west province British Columbia and here even with special health bonus from employer I had to pay for each action from 20 to 40 % cash !!! For example front tooth crone I had to pay $600! After retirement while searching for health care insurance I found it is so expansive I can't afford it from my pension ( my pension is not in low level on Canadian condition) !
BTW I can just remind you Philippine health system is not so great - my ex-father in law ( in Manilla) when he got sick -early cancer stage and needed Xray - I had to financial help to get it - later familiar situation occurred when he needed surgical treatment....

Congratulation Kim! When baby comes to family, it is the most beatiful thing to happen... :) I already have 2 kids... so if you needed anything I can share what I know/have. I also collected baby clothes, utensils, stroller... and lot of it is unisex.. bcs I have boy and girl :) if you need advaice... the first thing you should do when you go to monthly check-up is have a calendar and always know in which week you are in, bcs doctors are lazy and doesn't check or when they type it to the PC (which is pretty new thing in slovakia and these doctors who are still in ambulances, are the doctors who are strong enough/brave enough to learn how to actually work with PC :DDD) so they ask things which you already told them a few times.. so be patient... :DDDD
Another thing is, that when you will be in 30 week you need to go to ANY hospital to assign yourself in.. bcs from 34 week of pregnancy your visits in doctors ambulance will be weekly and in hospital YOU chose for yourself to give a birth in... Lot of ppl usually give birth in Bratislava... some reccomend Ružinovská nemocnica. I reccomend Antolská... I gave birth there twice and it was great, the porsonnal was kind enough for me.... some moms which they gave birth for first time were horriefied by stuff, but all moms who was there with second (or more) children were satisfied, some was telling it was like in hotel :D they bring food into your room, they clean up for you, for first shower after giving birth, doctor/nurse asists you.. personal in Antolska was kind, at least to me.. :)

Congratulations Kim 🙂 I have mostly good experience during my convalescence after surgery in hospital. Food was terrible, but maybe because they dont used salt, or minimum of it :-D (because salt is not good after hearth surgery :-) )

Oh yeah, the food in hospital is very blend 😅. Especially if you are on strict diet. One time I was there because of allergic reaction to antibiotics and I was one of the kids with strict diet. Oh man, it was.... Eh. 😅

Go to the uk and you will see what is awfull. My slovak experience is great . Never gave anything to anyone, stuff was always great. It all depend on people as well as slovaks are rude cunts and they behave like that, then they expect great service and behaviour. Same in any service...

From what I heard Canada doesn't have exactly the best healthcare, too. I'm just glad that we are not overprised as US. But yeah, we could do better 😅.
Expensive doctors? hahah... further west visit to public GP will cost you 50eur and specialist 200Eur in public hospital and you get nothig solved...just to put you on 12months waiting list...and there is just 1 screening during whole pregnancy...

I had to wait 13 months in the UK. My GP kept prescribing medication before they even bothered to find out what's wrong. It's really not that bad in Slovakia in comparison with other European countries.

žijem v zahraničí už roky a čo ma prekvapilo bolo, že ja ako ''samoplatca'' som zaplatil 13€ za snimok a otec ''len 11€'' keďže jeho poisťovňa to prepláca a ja som platil plnú sumu. SK poisťovne sú dobrý biznis pritom ľudia im tam platia nehorázne peniaze z každej výplaty
