    • @zivzulander
      @zivzulander 8 годин тому

      @@johnburrows3385agreed. One of the best interviewers I've seen. People are quick to complain/nitpick, but he's very good at guiding the conversation, asking follow up questions, setting up things for his guests and colleagues, bringing up relevant personal anecdotes, summarizing (I'm not alone here in noticing this one - I want to tell Dr. Sarah Berry to call him JonathanGPT 😁), and just generally being very engaging.
      I've seen complaints when he plays a little dumb on a topic, but that's a well-honed technique to try and be an effective surrogate for the audience. Knowing when to interject for the sake of clarification is an art form, too. If you watch enough interviewers, podcasts, lecturers, etc. you pick up on who is good at this stuff.
      Jonathan has actually integrated a lot of feedback, too, from early episodes and has gotten even better with this format over time. No complaints from me, especially since I'm not a subscriber to the app (would join if they had microbiome tests in New York, but only two or three microbiome testing companies that I'm aware of operate here due to strict regulatory requirements - hopefully that changes in the future).

    Content great, as usual, I watch these podcasts every week. BUT didn't enjoy this as much because of the adverts, very distracting, not to mention, a lot of the ads were for medical/health products that Zoe itself would probably debunk as worthless snake oil (correct me if I'm wrong on that, I skip them as soon as I can, maybe the ads are signed off by Zoe, but I doubt it). You will end up turning people off this podcast if the ads continue, which will be a shame as the messages are really important (and thank you for them).

      It is ok, the headline is enough. We have all seen "boosted" immune systems - asthma, peanut allergy, autoimmune diseases - e.g - Psoriasis, Celiac disease, Multiple sclerosis, Diabetes mellitus type 1, Endometriosis, Rheumatoid arthritis etc. The immune system is complicated and mucking about with it with chemicals is not likely to help. (Other than perhaps using sauna and cold baths but even that is only under investigation and not proven).

  • @zivzulander
    @zivzulander 2 дні тому +6

    The concept of "boosting" a normally functioning immune system is a bit like "boosting" defense spending of a heavily armed country during peace time, or handing police departments a huge stockpile of military gear. Things may function normally in most cases, but If you are handed a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.
    Although that's my perspective as someone who _doesn't_ have a normally functioning immune system (I have Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease) and certain things that are supposedly "good" for the immune system will trigger excess inflammation; my immune system is already in a heightened, constant wartime mode. So I definitely agree with the perspective that we should desire healthy immune responses, not over-reactive ones.

    Adverts! Makes the podcast almost unwatchable. No mention of Vit D, surprise surprise. Suppose that would slightly go against the narrative as Tim Spector isn’t a fan! My husband & I (mid 60’s) have been taking VitD + K2 for 4 years now & have no intention of stopping. We didn’t realise before how important it is to so many aspects of life & living in the north of the UK we get precious little sun, especially this year! I’ve read most people are deficient & what NHS recommends is basically enough to prevent rickets & no more. I believe it helps support my immune system, rather than boosting it. As with everything these days there’s such a lot of conflicting information out there it’s hard to know what to believe!

    What about the carnivore or ketogenic diets? If we were originally carnivore then we weren't relying on fibre in our diet!

      Take a look at your own teeth designed by a million years of evolution. The pointy bits at the front are for meat, the rest of the flat ones at the back are for plants. Pretty awesome are they not? You are welcome. Check out a cat, it only has pointy ones, check out a cow, it only has flat ones.

      If we were meant to be carnivores we would have teeth like carnivores' teeth: carnassial, or shearing, teeth that tear and slice raw meat and cut tough sinews. We don't. In any case, the so-called carnivore diet relies on meat that true carnivores wouldn't recognize, and a carnivorous diet lays the groundwork for serious gut problems (no fibre) and malnutrition (lack of vitamins and polyphenols). People in the blue zones eat a diet that's 2/3 complex carbs and not much meat.

    What about vaccines? Furthering the notion that we can exhaust our immune systems by boosting, are vaccines weakening our natural immunity?

    Dr. Macciochi speaks far too quickly and uses endless terms that aren't simple enough for the average person. "Natural downstream impact", "basal metabolic rate". etc etc

      A good idea for the interviewer would be to reflect back in plain language what that means. I can follow it because I took immunology and other classes at the doctoral level. I think that is a good point you make, to remind them they need to break it down in simpler terms.

    BS pedanticism in the video hewding and illustrates why I dont give zoe much attention. Boosting ones immune is used by people as a shorthand for improving ones immune and that is very possible.

    Thank you for a very interesting podcast - I too have never really understood what the immune system is!
    I'd also like to reflect on a couple of comments about personal anecdotes. First of all, this podcast is structured as a conversation rather than a presentation, and anecdotes come up in conversations and make it feel real. I recognise however that we all absorb information in different ways - some of us prefer data without the personal stuff, and others of us are very interested in the personal information because we relate to it in our own lives although we know it is not scientific. I'd say that the balance is about right because it helps the conversation to flow. I would agree however with the comments about the adverts. Definitely not an improvement.
