BLOWHARDS! 1984 Kawasaki GPz750 Turbo Vs. 2020 Kawasaki H2 Carbon

  • I thought I was picking up a new Z H2 naked at Kawasaki, but there was some miscommunication. I got this H2 Carbon instead, the full-zoot sport version barely removed from the track-only H2R instead of the slightly tamer naked I was expecting. Damn the luck! I’d really prefer to be sat a bit more upright. When I climbed on and reached for the clip-ons, the H2 Carbon hurt my lumbar and impinged upon my liver compartment. Then it cracked my knees when I picked my feet up onto the pegs. And the way the thing revved and the supercharger chirped in the parking lot frankly was a bit frightening. It seemed angry. This is ridiculous. Nobody needs a motorcycle like this outside of the Bonneville salt flats.
Eight minutes down the road, I realized again what an ass I am. I was so busy aiming and zotting along, whatever complaints my back and knees had were drowned out in the wind and adrenaline. Like being dead after a long disease and disconnected from all pain, suddenly I was nothing but a pair of veiny Von Dutch eyeballs attached to a primordial brainstem blasting through space. While trying to not get a really expensive ticket.

I bought an ‘84 GPZ 750 turbo brand new and I loved it. I had many bikes over the years, but that was so fast and the styling on it still makes it look like a new bike. Your ZX14R anniversary edition is a beautiful motorcycle and reminds me a little of the turbo.

I owned 3 of the GPz 750 turbos throughout the years. Bought the first one brand new in the Spring of 1984. My last one was a full custom with 184 rear wheel horsepower and a max of 113 ft lbs of torque. Ran a 10.00 at 141 mph with it at Atco Dragway in NJ. Good times indeed!
Also, re-align the left front turn signal please!

I remember Atco, and Englishtown, on Friday nights...blasted my turbo there often. Then, a buddy of mine bought one, used, in the early 90's, and decided to slap a Mr Turbo on it, in place of the stock unit, and blew out 2 of his cylinders the week we were up at Americade, in Lake George in '95. He rode it back to the city, on 2 cylinders, a blown turbo, a choking cloud of smoke, no faster than 55, and a wing and a prayer....we made it though....that dumbass

I owned a 1985 Kawasaki GPZ 750 for 8 years but sold it about 15 years ago. It was a great reliable bike. My 2005 Honda 600 F4i was faster but the GPZ was cool with the whistle from the turbo. It wasn’t arm-stretching but it would just pull and pull as the rpms rose. The GPZ still looks great after all these years.

My old bike...I had the 750 Turbo in '85. No one stood a chance back then. I do remember it would get dicey riding in the rain, and the turbo spinning up at 5 or 6,000 rpms, and you had to remember that in turns too...but still an awesome bike, awesome memories...

Great video guys and I love to hear all the stories in the comments. I’ve collected 23 of these old sportbikes over my military career (mostly from soldiers) and any time I ride them, I get cornered and told these same stories at gas stations, restaurants……but it’s so cool to watch people relive those memories. Have thought about opening a museum. Who knows. Maybe one day. 😁👍
Thanks for sharing, for doing a demo and taking some of us back to the 80’s, when bikes with fairings were just making their appearance. Safe riding! 🙏

I worked at several Kawasaki dealers in the early to late 80's and most of the guys I worked with didn't like the turbo due to the lag. They said it lacked that quick snap of power you got from the then current crop of bikes. I rode it and I loved it. I think they were just scared of the sudden power when the turbo kicked in.

On Wednesday next week, 8th December 2021 I am about to buy another Z750 Turbo, after crashing my last one to matchsticks in 1991. So, 30 years later, here we go again. I think that this will be my 30th bike purchase since 1977 when I passed my test, but it will be the first bike I will look after. These 30/35 year old classics are, in my not very humble opinion, the best looking motorcycles ever.

You have a gift for writing, with a keen eye for details, and yet with the ability to not get lost in the technical details, and instead translate the feeling of riding into the written word. Hence the overwhelming curiosity to see what some of this old stuff will do no matter where that falls on the stupid spectrum. I owned a 1984 gpz 750 turbo, brand new. Traded a 1982 gpz 750 in towards the cost. Loved them both but struggled with choosing the turbo over the gpz 900r, that was available new in 1984. I joined the Army in 1982 at the ripe old age of 18 and could get financed for these dream machines but only one at a time. I rode both nearly year round as I couldn't afford a car, too. Rode them from Nebraska to N.H., North Carolina and such, too.
80s and 90s were awesome era for Japanese sportbikes! Though I doubt my 750 turbo could hang with a modern 600, much less the H2. Rocking a Ducati Scrambler today, as my 60yo joints can't handle the body position of modern sportbikes. Life has been good!!!

Wow, you have made a classic Kawasaki video, it will be as timeless as the GPz750 and you have excelled yourselves!
For anyone wondering why Kawasaki did not make the GPz750 more powerful, the H2 is the perfect answer. Simply put, without all the electronics to protect the rider, unadulterated 180+ HP will probably kill you in a couple of days and all the bike manufacturers know that killing your customers is bad for business.
Here are some things that you can do with raw 180+ HP:
    * Accelerating so hard that you can't reach the brakes or roll off the throttle before you impact something.
    * Flipping the bike at 100+ mph

The GPZ was an absolute street brawler in it's time and considering the H2, which I'd love to have, is only about 1.5 seconds quicker QM says a lot about what the GPZ was at its time. Much respect for both in my opinion. I may be considering selling it so if anyone is interested reach out to me.

if the GPz can talk, he will tell the H2: Your fast grandson. You've grown faster than me.
H2: Thanks grandpa GPz. I'm glad to bring our name "Ninja"
GPz: That's my grandson. I'm proud of you.

Gpz's were sharp, I had 85 600 ninja, first 600 ninja and I loved it. Fast handles went 60kmiles zero problems, not a one when I sold it. Biggest regret of my life. Now the latest ninjas and h2 are light years ahead of old originals. I still prefer the looks and lines of mid to late 80s bikes. Give me my real dream bike the 636 ninjas, greatlines and monster power. 2003 green 636 has enough power and great looks and new enough techno be my perfect bike. If I can find clean model I am getting one.

Had a nearly new Kawa.750 turbo, 84. Like my GT750 shaft drive, turbo would sit at a Planted 140mph. all day long, but if road was clear, turbo would get up to 160mph. Last bike,3rd. GT550 Kawasaki,92. March 19, chance to get a bike, no Kawasaki shops nearby, turned down a 07 CBR600RR, sight unseen, saw it, wanted it, just sold Bummer, looked really good to ride. Dancer, opted for a 05 GSF 650 i. Bandit, one very careful, cautious owner, who basically ran it in for 15,000 miles. Wow,at least 58, 59 times more biking joy, than my 750 turbo, that was Superb, playing with the turbo WOOSH, Hanging on for dear life, as it TRIED TO THROW RIDER OFF THE BACK. But my now late beloved 650 i. Bandit, over 80 mph, before the red line, in 2nd gear, Special, but a Perfect Storm, arm's are limp on bars, body slouched, FEELS LIKE AN INDUSTRIAL CATAPULT, FIRED IT OFF, A mile n half into first proper ride, 27 years, Crow Road, Glasgow, after midnight, chicane going to Clyde Tunnel , straightening up, said 92mph. Actual 89 mph. 6,500rpm.,4th gear, Red lines at 12,000 ???, What no, WHAT no, yes. Which means, the left right chicane, in a totally upright, PROPELLED forward motion, I was able to twitch limp bars,in same lane, at approx.80 mph. Yes, yes the turbo WOOSH,was a lot of biking joy, but nothing, like the 650 i. Bandit????, It's like a FAITH, a CALLING. Sadly now, I am a semi retired Banditateer, FEKKIN Banditaholic, ruined for any other bike. And I'm not even lying. Just BLESSED to have had 20, 21 months, on a healthy Bandit, Remember EVERY ride???, can remember EVERY TWIST OF THE THROTTLE. Response?, Quicker than an Arcade game.

I was a Kawi boy when 750 turbo turned up at my dealership in Sydney as a demo. I had a Z750e a few years earlier, and I had a GPZ1100B2 at the time. The shop talked me into taking it for the w/e and I did a trip to Newcastle NSW to show it off for them. It was the best of the Kawi 750's and refined, and Metzler Comp K tyres were fitted. I told Kawasaki Australia that it should do this to the 1100!

Enjoyed that. It would have to be the turbo for me though, slightly biased views from a current 1984 GPZ750 owner. The turbo’s are going for $10-15k here in the UK, so out of my reach now. The bars on your bike look aftermarket as they were originally clip ons giving a much sportier riding position.

I bought a new Kawasaki KZ750E back in 1981, and I think it was 1984 when I got an invitation in the mail to test ride some Kawasaki bikes at Laguna Seca raceway. Just had to pay $10 and if you do the ride you get the money back. I was like, HELL YES! So yeah, I rode the 750 TURBO on a RACE TRACK. Damn what a ride! The last turn before the straightaway to the finish was really tight, so down to 2nd gear through that last turn and then hit it hard and redlined 2nd-4th and then when I finally slowed down a rider from Kawasaki caught up to me and angrily waved his finger and gestured to SLOW DOWN! I'm like, IT'S A FREAKEN RACETRACK! What's the point if I can't ride it hard? But man, what a blast.

I have a lifelong friend who owns a 1984 GPZ750T and he did a little internal engine work on it and then transplanted a blower from a Mustang onto it and it now makes 365 hp at the rear tire. Of course it’s only good for straight line riding and it gets rather warm rather quickly but hey, it’s his bike.

If anyone still has one you can almost double the hp.for free, the factory waste gate has the thread punched , you can adjust, the computer has two wires that you can put in race mode you know it's in by the number of blinks, the dfi cover has plugs you need to drill out to adjust, also need gates hose clamps on everything for the extra boost. I had 3 of them with these mods.never a problem. Just a cheap way to get wheelies in every gear

Cool video. I think they over sold the power of the H2 brakes needing ABS to be controllable. Most 600 and 1000 sport bikes in the last ten years come with similar brake systems and the bikes have comparable weight and tires and no ABS and are very manageable. I have ridden and worked on the brake system of the H2 and most other brands. They are correct about how hard the H2 pulls it's odd because you twist the throttle and it instantly starts making crazy smooth power yet the motor dose not sound like it's even working hard. It reminds me of watching a movie and hitting the fast forward button, sounds the same but everything is moving by faster.
