The historic Inverness Club was a wonderful site to host a U.S. Open. It is just all wrong that the USGA has never gone back there for the big tournament. The course was renovated in 2018 and looks amazing.
What an amazing, fighting finish by the great Gary Player. iirc, he had a lost ball 2 shot penalty in one of the early rounds of that '79 Open. In the end, that cost him a tie with Irwin.
I followed Jerry Pate in this round. I really thought he could come up through the board and possibly take this open. He started off well and had some trouble. You can’t appreciate how difficult this course is without playing the game and being there. If you can hit steady straight shots you would do well on this course. If you deviate at all, it can get really costly. The greens were playing pretty fast and they are small. Hale pretty much summed it up in the interview about par golf here.
If you want to see Tom Weiskopf and Hale Irwin's drives on the 1st hole from ground level, here is the link. Go to the 19:41 mark of this link ua-cam.com/video/2d4_sSCJrss/v-deo.html

#2 of THREE US Open wins! The guy could hit long irons. USGA conditions were brutal..

Hale was a great player whom I really admired. But God was he ever mean.
Jim MaKay was too abrasive and lacked a smooth tone to be a good golf announcer.
Nah, I liked him. He's the voice of 80's American Sports.
You have a point. I think Chris Schenkel would’ve been a more appropriate announcer for his tone.
I loved him for the Olympics. He always seemed like a less sugary Mr. Rogers--like the best of neighbors. I can't see or hear abrasive.🤔
Totally disagree. Jim McKay was the best sports anchor ever. He did golf extremely well.
Sometimes I wonder if McKay had a few to loosen up 🥃
