Ah, the glorious voices of Chris Shenkel and Jim McKay! Brings back wonderful memories of watching golf in that era. Take me back!
Jim McKay really wasn't a great golf commentator, or The Indy 500.
Byron nelson is on the left
2 of the greatest, with Byron.

I was a young high school golfer in 1971 from the same Pennsylvania town as Jim simons. The town held its collective breath that whole weekend. Jimmy shot 65 on Saturday to take the lead which blew us all away. Playing with Nicklaus in the final pair was more pressure than imaginable. Still Jimmy acquitted himself very well even though he fell apart the last holes. Jimmy went in to be a good pro and won several tournaments including the Nicklaus Memorial near Columbus Ohio. Rest in peace Jimmy!!
I remember how we were all in awe of Jack back then, as he really was like a great golden bear, and despite not winning a major in '68 and '69, he won his 8th at St. Andrews in 1970, giving him 8 his first 8 years as a professional. As much as I admire Bobby Jones winning 44% of all the majors he ever entered and of course, being from Texas I worshipped Hogan, but Jack's record is beyond belief - 18 wins, 19 runner-ups and 8 third place finishes. Sustained excellence for over 20 years - no one else is even close. Jack is obviously the GOAT.
Tiger is close
@@MisterCrookedNose Certainly Tiger is closer than any modern professional but Jack has 45 first, seconds and thirds in majors and Tiger only 26 - Jack almost twice as many - not too close in my book.
I think jack is goat too
Tiger Woods-hold my beer
Jack’s own words, only a handful of players could beat me. On the other hand , at least one hundred guys were capable of defeating Tiger. In otherwords tiger faced far more stiffer competition
This is gold reminds me of being a kid watching TV
There are those who will disagree, but for me, Merion is the most beautiful course in golf.
“There are no seven-iron shots at Merion.”

You don't see rough like that anymore, there are talking about making the ball go shorter, hell bring back this rough and furrow bunkers like in Bobby jones day, they'd think twice before trying to hit it 350. In Bobby jones day some rough was so tall they joked about losing their caddy. Several golfers from jone's era could hit it long but had to play within themselves, one of his major wins the par 5 was 625 yards long and slightly up hill, jones was the first golfer to eagle it, he hit driver, big spoon(2 or 3wood) to 15 feet and holed the putt. Jack won the long drive contest in the 1963 pga championship with a 341 yard shot with wooden clubhead. Point is you couldn't take a chance on big drives all the time because of rough.
Lee would have probably gotten me about 6-1 on fan duel
Lee Trevino v Jack Nicklaus at Merion. It is hard to imagine what could have been better…maybe a head-to-head at The Old Course.
I just turned 80, and it's so nice to hear bunkers called sand traps and hear the term British Open again - indeed kerryunderwood6735, take me back with you! Funny how Jim McKay was ga-ga over Bobby Nichols winning $60,000 in a tournament the previous year - great stuff.
Trevino is a hot weather player, being from South Texas. Playing conditions determine outcomes.
"The ruling here is that you have to putt the dog...I'm of course not serious"
Jim Simons qualified for 1967 US Open as a high school JUNIOR.
Nike would have signed him for a Trillion dollar deal.
He kind of washed out tho
Jim McKay already referring to “The great Jack Nicklaus” in 1971.
Camera's not even on Lee for the last shot of the playoff. Focused on Jack while Lee knocks his in.
At least they showed lee, i watched the hero challenge they showed tiger all weekend, i thought he was winning, finally they showed the scores, he was 12 strokes back and almost in last place.
Nicklaus called Trevino and hogan the greatest ball strikers of all time
If lee didn’t hate Augusta so much and was not struck by lightning at butler at least 8 majors
Thank you for posting this. I do have some questions about the quality though. Does it look better on Roku or Apple TV, for example? I'm not sure how many generations down this is from the broadcast master, but in addition to it maybe not being that, it also suffers from a great deal of compression artifacts. There is precious little detail, and I do know that live location shooting back in those days was fuzzy, but not this fuzzy.
All that said, I appreciate it being available in any form.
Huh???
Wish they would have covered all 18 holes but ABC was strong in daytime anyway
If only the merry Mex played today!
@@radar0412 Lol...that was average with wound balls and short persimmon drivers...with modern equipment he'd be just as dominant as he was then! Talent is talent!
@@radar0412 Lol...the average drive on the PGA Tour in 1980 was 256yds...that same year Trevino's average drive was 259yds!!! Trying to convince me that the great Lee Travino "would have to stick to the smaller venues" shows me how little you know about the game!!!
Lee trevino is a multiple major champion. He competed very well against the golden bear jack nicklaus. He was burnt out during the playoff then lee triumphed.
@@barrymontgomery408 lee Trevino is an all time golfing god. I just wish we could see him play today with these clubs. His hands are ridiculous
Jim Simons dead at 55, drug overdose.
What a tragedy.
Accidental OD, found him in his hot tub.
The “ roly-poly” figure of Bob Rosburg. Now, people start crying if anyone even implies John Daly isn’t an athlete……
Nicklaus took forever to putt!
Nicklaus
the hole maps are 3 dimensional 😃
Boy was Jack slow. Lee just got in and ripped it
Yeah no kidding. The announcers always use the term "deliberate" when talking about Jack Nickalus when he took forever. In reality, he was just slow 😂
Lee couldn't keep up with jack walking from shot to shot but took his time before he hit it.
That's a big reason Jack beat everybody...he didn't hit a shot till he was ready
Man, talk about slow play.
2:18:51 Love the lag :D
everyone bitches about slow play but the best two golfers of all time played terribly slow
You really have to use your imagination with this picture quality.
Naked golf ?
Ty.🤤🤤
That mex put a hurting on that polar bear! A minority tamed him lol. 😂🎉
Golden Bear, not polar bear lol.
Jack is lucky he didn't play tiger. Tiger would have crushed him
