I spent my childhood in the countryside of Finland. We had a huge wild garden. I loved animals, saw lots of them around. I liked raccoon dogs, but I never saw even one, even though I really wanted to. Then, when I was 20, my parents had to move out of the house into a city. It was emotional, saying the final goodbye to my old childhood home and all the places around it, filled with memories. I spent the last night there, and woke up into the last morning in the old house. A beautiful bright midsummer morning. I went into the living room and looked out of the window into the back yard.... and there was a raccoon dog there. Just casually going about its business. I had never known there were raccoon dogs in the area. It felt like a gift, a parting gift.

Now that is 1 of the most strangest japanese mythical creatures that I have seen today. They just look like a bunch of fluffy dogs with mask on their eyes.
The intro pretty much sums up exactly why Tom Nook is a Tanuki. ✅️ Strikes terror in the hearts of every small creature it meet. Tom is a terrifying business man 👨💼 ✅️ tireless hunter Tom out there hunting for more animals and the occasional human to wrap up into his latest money scheme ✅️ Domain constantly expanding Homeboy got MILLIONS of islands/towns ACROSS THE GLOBE. ✅️ Magical creature who has charmed the hearts of millions Do I even need to explain this one? WE ALL LOVE HIM (but we also hate him bc loan's are hard to payoff 😭 and Tom lowkey scary when you don't pay your mortgage 😳) He got all the characteristics! 🦝🤎
I am a Japanese. Racoon dogs are not so rare animal in Japan. Sometimes we see them or their dead body at urban areas and roads (even in the areas not so close to mountain). They don't escape when humans and automobiles get closer. They don't approach us like dogs and cats, but they don't draw away either. That is the reason why some Japanese think racoon dogs are slow, clumsy, and less alert to danger.
Special shoutout to the presenter for openly sporting their glucose monitor without any unnecessary shame or trying to hide it; it was really nice to see, along with the raccoon dogs.
Ran into one when I was in South Korea, scared the crap out of me and he took off as well. Not sure who was more scared. We froze and stared at each other for a minute then both of us ran.
I can't believe you mentioned the Tanuki suit but not Tom Nook, arguably better known than the Tanuki suit. (Even though Mario is obviously much better known than Animal Crossing, the Tanuki suit is one of the lesser known items in comparison to things like the Fireflower or Super Mushroom, while Tom Nook is arguably the most major character in the Animal Crossing series apart from the player character). Tom Nook is a Tanuki from the Animal Crossing series. The English version calls him a raccoon, but he's actually a Tanuki, in fact, the name Tom Nook is a pun on Tanuki. He is one of the main characters of the series as the character you buy a home from, and a major part of the Animal Crossing games is paying off your debt to him. However, he doesn't charge interest and lets you pay at your own pace. He has two young apprentices named Timmy and Tommy that are also Tanuki and they are just the cutest little bbys
I love your channel! I'll admit, I'm a bit of an animal nerd myself, but I've learned so many interesting things thanks to your channel. Keep up the good work! 👍
The reason that certain parts of their anatomy have become such a...big deal in folk lore is due to old medal working techniques. Their pelts were used by smiths when hammering out metal in order to reduce dents and tool marks on the metal. They would lay the pelt on the metal and hammer away with the pelt in the middle as a buffer. Over time certain parts of the pelt would get flattened and stretch to sometimes comical proportions. This led to the legendary status of their boy bits.

a tanuki tale so once there was this dude who was selling pots in the forest and then he heard a scream. he looked in a bush and saw a tanuki in a bear trap. he freed the tanuki who then ran off into the forest. 24 hrs later the dude found a pot in the forest and then cleaned it to sell it to the monks . the pot arrived at the monks place just in time for tea. the pot was strange firstly when the tea was poured out it was cold and the pot seemed to squirm in the heat. the monks were angry and demanded the dude to come back . the dude came back and when he touched the pot out popped a tanuki ! the tanuki said he didn't like being heated up. the dude laughed and they all lived happily ever after

@Hellequin Maskharat they're great pets if you'd like to repaint your home in entrail red! Also Germany brought racoons over , who are invasive there... Its the only place the Racoons and Tanuki meet.
@@anthonygorman94
Raccoon is introduced and invasive species also in southern Japan. So there are two places where wild raccoons and tanuki meet
Now that is 1 of the most strangest japanese mythical creatures that I have seen today. They just look like a bunch of fluffy dogs with mask on their eyes.
“Hungry hungry Creepos” HAS to be my favorite nickname for any animal
Absolutely adorable! Fascinating video like always. Thank-you!
"And who's domain is constantly expanding."
Oh, no...
The intro pretty much sums up exactly why Tom Nook is a Tanuki.
✅️ Strikes terror in the hearts of every small creature it meet.
Tom is a terrifying business man 👨💼
✅️ tireless hunter
Tom out there hunting for more animals and the occasional human to wrap up into his latest money scheme
✅️ Domain constantly expanding
Homeboy got MILLIONS of islands/towns ACROSS THE GLOBE.
✅️ Magical creature who has charmed the hearts of millions
Do I even need to explain this one? WE ALL LOVE HIM (but we also hate him bc loan's are hard to payoff 😭 and Tom lowkey scary when you don't pay your mortgage 😳)
He got all the characteristics! 🦝🤎
Apparently one of them pilots a Gundam now as well.
Literally had no idea this creature existed. Love this channel ❤️
Common sentiment.
Thank you!
they are skinned Alive inn China for their fur..dont buy fur products.
Special shoutout to the presenter for openly sporting their glucose monitor without any unnecessary shame or trying to hide it; it was really nice to see, along with the raccoon dogs.
This is fake.. The glucose monitor was a paid actor
Ran into one when I was in South Korea, scared the crap out of me and he took off as well. Not sure who was more scared. We froze and stared at each other for a minute then both of us ran.
Do they get eaten by them
LOVED the video
Super informative
Diurnal is pronounced dai - urnal
Please keep making videos!
I love your illustrations! Awesome channel❤❤❤
Any episode of Animalogic is a win and Any episode that talks about scrotums is a double win in my book.
Finally, Tom Nook got a video
Along, with Timmy and Tommy
Edit : I don't want to forget those guys. Bake-danuki is my favourite yokai
The leaf furniture all makes sense if you consider their folklore
Watching this learn more about the Best Gundam Pilot's origins.
They're among the most common roadkill in Finland.
Oh it's the Raccoon dog from the furry anime BNA. Cool, I just finished the anime last month.
I love your channel!
I'll admit, I'm a bit of an animal nerd myself, but I've learned so many interesting things thanks to your channel. Keep up the good work! 👍
So this is what Gaara had inside him as the One Tail Jinchuriki...
4:55 You know what's ironic? Us humans calling others species "invasive."
dAymn Danielle, you're lookin great!!! look way more lively and happier!!! I'm really happy for you!

There was a Tunuki escaped from a family home here in Central Scotland two winters past. Seeing the lost posters was the first I'd ever heard/seen of the cute little fellows. I hope he was found ☹️🤔
lived in the heart of tokyo for 12 years, saw 2 tanukis while i was there...in the middle of the street and at the back of our office...
Way off topic, is that a Dexcom I see? They are a game changer for diabetics these days. A real life saver for my 4 year old grandson. My daughter even lets me run the app on my phone when I visit. I’ve tried to learn everything I can about the condition to be the best grandma I can for him. ❤️
It always makes me happy seeing other diabetics thriving while doing what they love. Nice!
Thank you for such a wonderful program that teaches us imaginable things. Cali Colombia
Charming host. Interesting content entertainingly presented.
a tanuki tale
so once there was this dude who was selling pots in the forest and then he heard a scream. he looked in a bush and saw a tanuki in a bear trap. he freed the tanuki who then ran off into the forest.
24 hrs later the dude found a pot in the forest and then cleaned it to sell it to the monks . the pot arrived at the monks place just in time for tea. the pot was strange firstly when the tea was poured out it was cold and the pot seemed to squirm in the heat. the monks were angry and demanded the dude to come back . the dude came back and when he touched the pot out popped a tanuki ! the tanuki said he didn't like being heated up. the dude laughed and they all lived happily ever after
" Shojoji " is originally the song of tanuki.
Shout out to Mario 3! 💕 Tanuki/"Tanooki" suit, Nintendo knew what's up 💕
I hope that ad at the beginning helped someone. It was long.
I didn't know tanuki's were real! I thought they were a type of Yokai!
I'm pretty sure they are both
Me too😅...
Bakedanuki is the yokai, technically. But in Japan just about everything can be, including people.
Yokai, like ghosts, are creatures made up of real life things that were at the time unexplained phenomena.
Most yokai have some sort of real life counterpart or event tied to it; and in this case Tanuki.
Yes and No
The rancoon dogs mythical giant balls have an interesting back story. There ball skin was used for pounding and shaping soft maetles like gold and as bags for holding money. So the tanocky get it's magical powers the same why people do. From money
The same species that inspired Raphtalia from The Rising of the Shield Hero.
I found this channel a few days ago, and I'm jealous of Danielle's life. She draws for a living, travel the world, and play with animals. AND she's in Canada, so she has health care!
Also, I can't believe fluffy raccoon dogs have existed all these years and no one's tried to domesticate them.
I've been living in Japan for 7 years and I *think* I saw a tanuki once from my train window. I think most people in Japan have never seen a tanuki in real life. I play "have you ever~" bingo with my students every year, and no one has ever answered yes to having seen a tanuki in the wild.
I used to see them once or twice a month, but sadly most of them were the dead ones as roadkills on Route 8 when I was driving to work in the morning.
@@atsukorichards1675 I finally did see a roadkill tanuki once now and people in each car were gawking as they went by, including us, because it was probably the first tanuki for many people.
@@Figgy5119 yes, probably so. They seem to be shy creatures and come out during night.
I was only in Japan for a year but lucked out once when hiking and a tanuki run onto my path and then ran off again. I only got a super quick glimpse but felt so excited and privileged afterwards! Otherwise the only tanuki I saw were the thousands of weird decorative ones EVERYWHERE
These things look adorable with their winter coats
Crocodile:You look unfamiliar, are you a raccoon?
Tanuki:No, I'm is Tanuki.
Crocodile:...I see.
That aint no magical creature, that's my land lord.
Fun Fact: If you love Naruto, one of the tailed beast, Shukaku, is based off of a tunuki
yup
spreading the Shukaku love 💖
Jerbari, Gaara’s One Tailed Beast is based off of the tanuki, and Tony Tony Chopper is joked about most people labeling him a tanuki because tanukis are raccoon dogs, and tanukai is the Japanese word for deer which is super close to word for raccoon dog.
the gourd that Gaara carries is meant to represent testicles
Danielle you are Simply the Best 😁 that's a funky looking dog lol
THAT'S who the song was about. Wow, it's rare for people to grow up to be as great as the promise they show as children!
Hey look it's Suletta Mercury
Suletta forgetta
The reason they’re portrayed with giant balls is because of a Japanese pun about tanuki skins being used for blacksmithing and ball sacks
I spent my whole life believing these creatures were fake, I thought they were just Japanese folklore.
Love the racoon dog and all the mysteries that surrounds it. They're so cute as well.
Racoon Dogs are violent little buggers. One of the few animals I wouldn't readily interact with.
Funny enough, so are raccoons :)
Fighting raccoons are vicious!
@@Candesce I've dealt successfully with racoons. My academic background is in Animal Behavior so there are very few mammals that I would straight refuse to work with. Honey Badgers, Wolverines, and Racoon Dogs would be the main ones. Because not only are they dangerous but they are deliberately contemptuous.
@@saradapagediocletian9707 is that so? I'm not familiar with raccoon dogs :)
@Hellequin Maskharat they're great pets if you'd like to repaint your home in entrail red! I don't condone domesticating wildlife but given the alternative you would be better off with an actual racoon. I know rehabers who have done quite well with them. I'm honestly really surprised Danielle didn't mention their aggressive nature. A former classmate told me a horror story of their experience and that's all it took for me.
As a side note, a former flat mate of mine mentioned that when his dog (a very friendly Afghan hound) encounters a raccoon dog in the woods, the raccoon dog is usually dead before he can intervene. They're not able to put up much of a fight.
Not trying to be "that guy," but Better Help is a pretty scandalous advertiser to plug. They have quite a bit of controversy surrounding them--just saying.
People make their own choices. Nobody has to follow the AD
@@erikcarrillo7378 Nobody has to promote them, either, at least not without doing 5 minutes of research.
@@melasnexperience lol its not like shes promoting them for free. Are you gonna pay the production costs for these videos?
I love the program, one of the best on animal curiosity. and the presenter is very beautiful
seems like the local European canids got tired of the things trying to sell them houses
SULETTA MERCURY
Thank you! Just the animal I wanted to see!
People usually translate tanuki to raccoon on animes and such, which is a shame, because they are so diffrent and special in their own way.
If you have trouble telling one from the other, just notice that raccoon may stand in two legs, hold the food and climb, while the tanukis are just like your regular dog.
Tom nook is looking even more suspicious now.
I love love Daniel!!!! She's so fun hosting animalogic videos!!! By the way I love the hair style!!! ❤❤❤ About the video, I didnt even know theres a dog racoon.. Really cool!!!
its been around maybe 3 years since your channel visited my recommendations
your transformation is inspiring
you got more beautiful

I'm going to suggest two species very close to home... The Iberian Lynx (one of the most endangered feline species in the world) and the Genet, the long imported viverrid we have in the iberian peninsula. Thanks for the amazing video as always!
Suletta is real!
In Swedish they're called _mårdhundar,_ literally "marten dogs". My former elementary school teacher told a story of one of her students. She said the kid called it a _mordhund_ on accident. _Mord_ means murder. So she called them murder dogs. I suppose she wasn't entriely incorrect though.
This is why the Riksdag have successfully ordered a cull on the foreign canids. Since 2009, any Racoon Dogs spotted in Sweden must be shot on sight.
@@DR3ADER1 Givetvis. De är invasiva arter. Jag bara tyckte att elevens felstavning var rolig och passande och ville därför dela med den.
As a Korean we call them Nuguri. What's interesting is that we often call racoons Nuguri too.(Not that it's correct) guess it's the opposite to the fact that Americans call them Racoon dogs.
just a suggestion: make a vid on kamoshika or Japanese serow, these weird fellas deserve recognition
I’m interested in kamoshika, too!
Danielle, could you do a video about invasive species from the Americas into Eurasia? Of course, the 1st species should be raccoons . We see so many videos coming out of Florida about invasive species in the Everglades. I am sure there must be raccoons that have been transported to Eurasia either for fur farming or pets. Thank you. Your videos always cheer up my day.
