When I was a kid in the sixties my Dad was in the military and we were stationed in Europe for a couple of years. A good friend of ours was a German Officer who flew a Fw190 during the war. One day my brother and I were dog-fighting with our model planes. When he saw us he walk up saying "no,no,no" and proceeded for the next 30 minutes to instruct us in the proper way to shoot down another aircraft. I wish he could have seen this restoration flying.

When the FW 190 first made it's appearance a new poster was produced by the British War Ministry. It featured an FW 190 with the caption, " Who's afraid of the big bad Wulf ? " At one Bomber Command station, a wag added " Sign here " on the poster. The whole bomber squadron signed it. 'Nuff said. Flugwerk did an amazing job on this build !

If that old story is true it was the USAAF as I heard ,the poster was from Boeing or Consolidated .
RAF makes no sense as they flew by night and would not have met the 190.
The Americans did come up against the FW during their daylight raids and had every reason to be afraid of it.

@@MrRugbylane I think that it is because of armoring. The plane was also designed for ground attack (a fighter-bomber). Wing loading is much higher on the Fw than on the spitfire, so it was less maneuverable. The Angle of attack (basically how much you can deviate your nose from your flight path) was much higher on the Spitfire. However the Fw was very fast in a dive, hence the boom and zoom tactics of the Luftwaffe, if caught in a turn fight with a spitfire, the plane would loose. It is interesting the design choices, that went into each plane. British seemed to make their own version of a fighter bomber with the Tempest, which also is a pretty cool plane.

Each side competing for that little edge to gain advantage and then the Germans finally introduced the ME-262 right near the end of the war. Incredible to see them all here on display and still flying still amazes when you think this was 80 + years ago when these planes were put into battle over the skies in Europe.

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease Рік тому

+@mothmagic1 Probably not until the late 1950s and early 1960s. Some early pioneers got them for air racing in the late 1940s, and bombers were bought for air mapping and water bombers. David Lindsey founded Cavalier Aircraft and converted surplus P-51s into executive sport planes. Some owners tried to profit and sell them to third-world nations during conflicts, and got into trouble for that. By the 1980s collectors began to see the value in them and started more serious restorations, and the prices for them started to climb. I think the problem of inexperienced pilots getting killed in them is mostly being addressed with better training. It's easier to make parts for them today, except they are running out of engine parts. Cost of ownership, insurance, and fuel changes may put most of them on the ground permanently.

+ Dennis Peltier Do you mean a Fw-190D? There is only one Fw-190D in Germany that is a static rebuild at the Luftwaffe Museum, Gatow. It was raised from a lake but deteriorated badly while left in storage. There were two other Dora projects in all of Europe plus a pile of parts from a third. I think two of those are now in the US as projects and the last project is moving very slow.

It's just incredible that there are now flying WW2 combat aircraft that were only in museums before. None are from the untouchable museum planes, but built from crashed hulks found in the swamps of Russia, the jungles of the Pacific, and the lakes and seas. The return of the DH Mosquito is the pinnacle of this effort.

      Here is a realistic picture:
Fw-190D-9 yes- there are several slow projects and replicas. Look for a replica to fly first, probably with an Allison V12.
Ta-152 - never because only one example survives
      Do-335 - nope
Ju-87 - Not many survivors to work with but Paul Allen's museum was building a flyable one. His death/estate has put the work on hold. There is a also a static rebuild of another one.
Bf-109K - a couple of projects but I don't think they will fly
Ju-88 - there are several projects, but Paul Allen's museum was the only organization with money to fly one and they had a wreck.
He-219 - Unlikely. There is one survivor and another one that's just a pile of goo pulled out of saltwater.

My grandfather was a member of the "Tross" der Wehrmacht (Reinforcement troops, mainly equipped with horses and wagons) at the eastern front. Apart from all the unbelievable, horrible and ghastly legacies he must have seen on the way as a following soldier - apart from all this he told me one occurrence that came immediately back into my mind when I first saw this video. As they were close to cross a river, they got the order to stop and not cross the bridge due to heavy counterattacks on the German bridgehead at the other side of the river by Russian troops. They should prepare for an orderly retreat "geordneten Rückzug". Then, so he told me, they suddenly got a heavy fright from 2 Messerschmidt Bf-109, suddenly appearing from nowhere and racing in low altitude along their heads in the direction of the disputed area ..... Never in my entire life I got a similar fright before, he said. After some time both Messerschmitt came back.... again at low altitude. This time they gave salut by waving the wings from the left to right, left to the right, left to the right ..... the complete company was honoring their support and maybe the rescue of their lives by shouting and rising their hands up high in the air. It must be something like this here that he never has forgotten and he was like back in the scene when he was telling this happening. May good bless all souls... of all nations.... all soldiers .... all civil victims ... of all humans who have lost their lives during a war. We are all one.... let's get started to live after this creed.

Your grandfather and his comrades, your country, fought for the sake of western civilization on a fratricidal war that was the result of machinations of despicable warmongers and traitors in London, Washington, New York and Moscow. Hold your head high every time you remember him and and keep in mind the fact that there are people, specially outside the "anglosphere" who do not believe in the official, "kosher" narrative about the second world war.
