I have been knitting for about ten years. I consider myself to be an adventurous beginner. I used to look at patterns that were "complicated" and think "I can't do that." You have a way of explaining things where I smack myself in the forehead and say, "Is that all it is? I can do that!!" (You should see my Boneyard shawl..she's biiiiig!!!) Thank you for making me a better knitter.

I can not knit with 9 inch circulars. I knit to tight and the stitches don't glide easily over the connection between cable and needle. I prefer 15 cm DPNs from KnitPro especially Zing (only Zing). And for my heel variant I would have to switch to DPNs anyway. I use the flap and gusset heel. Often I knit the flap *1k, 1p* for more elasticity.

Stephen this is a MUST for you!!!!! Earthtones Girl video tutorials will teach you everything you need to knit socks. A new to me I learned from her is "the Shadow Wrap Heel" and coming soon a matching toe. Easy and perfect every time. Her tutorials are a pure easy learning experience... she is on Ravelry, her tutorial pattern Soxploration will give you an easy entry into perfect sox.

I love Addi Flexi Flips for socks. They even make an XL now (extra long). It's the magic loop idea without all the pushing and pulling.

    • @NickUncommon
      @NickUncommon 2 роки тому +1

For me, it is essential, that the whole needle fits into my hand for the right ergonomics for me, the needles on those new addi are just 3 cm too short for me to use for knitting without cramping hands.
So circs it is, and I prefer two at a time magic loop on a 100 cm circular. The longer the cable, (in my experience) the less stress to lose your place.
      So many different approaches.

Stephen. Thank you for your podcast. It has made me excited to knit more of your patterns. I have a 3 skein fade from Life in the Long Grass. Would it be better for a Pagona or a smaller version of your newer garter shawl.
I would love sock patterns to match your shawls. Dustland would be awesome.
I typically do a heal flap. I do a slip stitch flap, eye of partridge is great for variegated yarns. Short row heals I like the Fish Lips heal. For contrast on striped yarn I like afterthought heals.
Also look for the sweet tomato heal. I think it was from Cat Bohrdi.

I am magic loop through heepflap and short row heel, then 6 inch dpns for gusset cuz magic loop is awkward at that point (but doable if dpns are not to hand). Back to magic loop until the end. If afterthought heel, magic loop all the way. Look forward very much to your sock patterns.

Yes, I create my “knitting fortress of solitude” with pillows under each elbow😆 I learned to knit socks on dpns and heel flap & gusset, I was reluctant to knit them any other way because I thought of it wasn’t broke why fix it. But one day I was feeling adventurous that was a toe up ,magic loop. Now, I’m a magic loop convert, but it took knitting the second sock to convert me. Also, I think that doing a fish lips kiss heel is much easier when doing magic loop.

I have yet to actually knit any socks but I did start by trying double points first…too pokey, hated getting jabbed all the time. To avoid second-sock syndrome, here's a suggestion: don't make both sock of one pattern at one time. Instead, alternate sock patterns: choose two different sock patterns. Knit one sock from one of the two patterns and then immediately knit one sock from the other pattern. You've knitted two socks, but they're not the same, so it's not boring. Then, go back to the first pattern and knit the second sock, and then go back to the second pattern to knit the second sock. Et voila! You have not just one, but *two* pairs of socks without the angst of second-sock syndrome!

Stephen, just try Chiaogoo Twist red lace interchangeables, with red cable, those are super super flexibel and the needlepoints are in 2 lengths and just have a fantastic point! I have tried a lot of different kinds and brands of dpn's in stainless steel and in bamboo. I tried the Karbonz too. I tried also the Hiya Hiya interchangeables but realy, for socks the Chiaogoo Twist red lace are my no. one!!!

Are you referring to the ChiaoGoo interchangeable set called Twist Red Shorties Set with 2" and 3" tips and cables to form 9", 12", and 14" circular needles in Sizes 0 to 3?

    • @EV-D-10
      @EV-D-10 2 роки тому +1

@@vivianpowell1732 Good Question! It is rather confusing those needles, I agree, but no Vivian, I do not mean those shorties but the TWIST SS Lace Tips in 4" and in 5" length (10 and 13cm).
On the package of the needletips it says "Mini" also, which is important to watch out for, to avoid mistakes.
Needletip sizes for socks I use: US 0 (2.00mm), US 1 (2.25mm) and US 1.5 (2.50mm). I suppose that is where the name 'mini' stands for. The cables are red and they are much thinner and more flexibel than the red cables of the fixed Chiaogoo Lace circulars. For socks with Magic Loop method, the cable length that I find most suitable is 22" (55cm) so if you have 2 sets of needles and 2 cables you can knit both socks at the same time more or less. There is also a red cable of 30" (75cm) length for those who prefer to knit 2 socks on one long circular needle. If you have more questions feel free to ask!

      @vivianpowell1732 2 роки тому

@@EV-D-10 Then your preference for sock knitting is using the magic loop. That technique does not appeal to me.

Blessings Stephen . . . you are an inspiration to me. Always so encouraging! So excited to see you knitting socks!! I love knitting my socks "Toe Up Two at a Time" on two circular needles. I find the "Turkish Cast On" is the easiest way to start the toes. When you use two circular needles you knit the heels on only the one needle . I knit the " Fleegle Heel " or " Fish Lips Kiss Heel ". The best things about knitting toe up socks is that you can try them on as you go to get the right foot length and you can divide the yarn in half and knit until you run out of yarn. I usually need to remind myself to use a stretchy bind off for the cuff. With gratitude, Sarah from Canada

It is super easy when you come to the heel and gusset as you leave one set of needles alone and knit the heel and gusset and then pick them up again to join the sock back to knit the foot. Hand pain and one remedy.
I knit quite a few mesh market bags. The mesh pattern I have been using for years is a two-round pattern worked on circular needles.
Round 1: YO, K2tog. Repeat around.
Round 2 Knit all stitches around.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 for desired length.
Working Round 1 over and over has caused a lot of hand pain for me, and the K2tog stitch is the culprit.
Fortunately I have found a stitch sequence that I can substitute for the K2tog stitch. It is as follows: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, Knit one stitch, then Pass the slipped stitch over (SL1 kwise, K1, PSSO).
So the mesh pattern will now be:
Round 1: YO, (SL1kwise, K1, PSSO) Repeat around.
    ROUND 2: Knit all stitches
The resulting mesh fabric looks very similar to the original mesh pattern, with slightly more loft, which I prefer. The best part is no pain whatsoever. I can knit this for hours on end.

I use Judy’s Magic Cast On ( the Cat Bordhi version), the Fish Lips Kiss Heel (it fits me very well) and Jeny’s Surprisely Stretchy Bind Off (use normal tension, not loosely). There! You’re all set!

Loving those socks, Stephen! You might want to try "Addi FlexiFlips2 Squared Long" needles. They have regular 5" needle tips separated by 2" cords and they're the best. I use them for most socks except stripes or colorwork. When I knit socks with lots of color changes, I prefer 9" circulars, specifically by Chiaogoo, in which case I still use longer needles for the heels and toes.

I’m definitely a sock knitter through and through. I always have like five different socks on the go cause I just want to keep casting on all the socks! I love socks because you can just make them as whacky as you like, probably why I also love your MKALs because it has the same carefree ‘say yes don’t stress’ mentality.
I do suffer from SSS (second sock syndrome). Two at a time is definitely super fun to just get the whole pair done at once!

I really enjoy your podcasts and have knit several of your patterns. Five shawls and now a Penguono! Can I say, I was hesitant to knit it at first because I was afraid it would end up being a hideous Coat-of-many-colours situation. However, after watching one of your podcasts where you talked about it (maybe this one?) I just decided to go for it because I'm trying to knit down my stash and this looked like a fun way to do it. Results be damned! On one recent Fruity Knitting podcast, the guest designer (sorry can't remember who it was!) said, "you'll know if you chose the right colour, because it'll make your heart sing!" and I'm trying to follow that maxim. So far it's working. Loving the colour changes and the way it's constructed. Thanks for continuing the EZ philosophy of FUN knitting! Without tears! Also, I'm a huge dog lover, so please bring back Brioche and Stitch!! xo

"Anatomische toe-up Socken" by justduit (german guy, called Thorsten Duit, he got his own youtube channel ... "Garngemunkel".... (whisch reads somthing like "yarnmumbling".... I do love toe-ups since than and even gave recently a little workshop on this to my companien ladys -all of them new to the knitting community nowadays.... - in the spinning group, which I am attending here in the rural contryside of Germany near Berlin and Potsdam....

Stephen - you HAVE to look into TAAT (two-at-a-time) socks - completely avoids SSS!. Also, an alternative to dpns, you could use Addi flips or equivalent. And check out the Sweet Tomato Heel. I find it really simple , but also fits really well. I am very excited that you are excited about socks. I want to love making socks, but alas…I do not. But I love wearing them, so I make them :)

Would love to know tips and tricks in Knitting 101. I'm pretty much only a sock knitter, cuff down, heel flap and gusset fits me the best, either magic loop or DPN's, and have never had SSS. I tried 9" circs but I have large hands and I got terrible pain. I find with socks, you have to find what works for you and fits you the best, trial and error. Missed Brioche and Stitch this time. Until next time, happy knitting.

    Dear Stephen,
I like sockknitting with 3 flexible ( bamboo ) double-pointed knitting needles made by addi / Germany.
I prefer ToeUp pattern and every time
after maybe 5cm I stop and start with the second sock. Until 5cm are knitted
I stop again and continue with the first sock up to the 1.row of the heel.
The second sock follows and so on…..
Lovely hug from me to you🥰🖖

Everything about shawl design would be super interesting!!
i'm a sort of advanced begginer, BUT I struggle sometimes with some stiches like SSK, K2tog, because I'm knitting using the Swiss technique, or Russian technique, basicalt I don't know hat to explain, the difference is int the purls, but I could show you!
so I'd love some tips about that!

I have always used long, straight needles to knit - they go with my knitting style. I recently acquired some long Addi DPNs and I happily work in the round on them (even on small projects probably better suited to shorter needles). I'm using them for colour work and I've chosen to go the "background yarn - right hand, contrast - left hand" route, so it's a mix of English and continental knitting (and the background/foreground hands will be reversed if there's any purling involved with the contrast!) I didn't find that I stabbed myself with the longer needles.

Hi Stephen! You will probably have your answer already, but here's my co tribution to your question; "what heel to knit?"
I am a relatively new knitter, but i started my journey knitting socks. I have done dozens by now, because i thought; "the projects are small enough to practice various sorts of stitches without getting bored." So actually my socks were my swatches.
I find (of all the heels i tried) the 'fish-lips-kiss hee'l from soxxtherapist the easiest one, but it is also worth to try the 'mock short row heel' from Roxanne Richardson. Those are easy to remember and promise absolutely no gaps!! All true.
However, sometimes i find a heel flap prettier and do that, but most of the time i end up asking myself; "what the frog was i thinking?"
Hope i could help, love your posts and patterns!
    Joes

    re: sock knitting recommendations
I'd recommend you look at the pattern Rose City Rollers by Mara Catherine Bryner. I've made 7 pairs. They are basic vanilla shorty socks with a rolled cuff. What I like about them is that the heel fit is a perfect for me and the elements (heel, gusset, toe) can be incorporated into just about any pattern you can dream up - add a cuff, a long leg, a texture, or contrasting heels and toes. There are 14856 projects on Ravelry for this pattern so I'm not the only one who likes it! I also love ChiaoGoo 9" circs (game changer!) for sock knitting unless I'm doing 2 at a time on magic loop.

Hi Stephen! Love your patterns and these podcasts! My absolute favourite heel is the Fish Lips Kissed Heel ($1 on Ravelry) by Sox Therapist. Best dollar I ever spent! It's my go-to heel and it can be used for toe-up and cuff-down socks. She has you make a cardboard cutout of your foot with measurements. No more guessing when to start your heel, and there is no counting or picking up stitches with this heel. It's the best! Congrats on falling down the rabbit hole of sock knitting. I can't wait for you to release sock patterns using your amazing stitches! 😃

Sock knitter with 50+ pairs under my belt here. Socks are what I go to when I need a brain break. I have tried many, many needles. I, too, love magic loop for sleeves and hats but find it fiddly for socks. Definitely look at Knit Picks wood with their multiple colours. They are smooth, with just enough grab. The points are a nice angle to do the decreases. 6" is better than 8" to prevent poking yourself. Go for smaller, like 2.5 mm, to give the socks better wear. You don't want to wear holes in those glorious socks that match your shawls. Next you will be learning to darn!

Yes, please, please, please for the beginner's/West Knits 101!! I taught to knit myself ages ago, before computers and UA-cam. I have techniques down quite well, but I still have trouble getting sweaters to fit me properly, they are always Too Big! I'm petite and the armholes are always much too low for me, as well as the garment being much too wide for my body. I've tried using smaller needles and sometimes that helps, sometime not. XS pattern sizing is almost always still too large for me. How do I adjust for that and what about if I'm knitting colorwork, how do I adapt a pattern to fit when colorwork/fair isle is involved in the yoke? I prefer to knit top down circular yokes garments. You have inspired me so much and I would really, really appreciate your help on this! Thanks. Barbara🥰

I have knitted twice Gyllis, and I would love a twist on this shawl. The main section is easy and fast I would add something at the beginning, maybe more diamonds like the last section. 🤔
Socks: I really enjoy the book by Morgan Oakes “Toe-up 2-at-time Socks”, using the magic loop so no double pointed needles.
And hats: I recently knitted twice, Cable Trellis Hat, my husband and brother in law liked how it looked from the top. It adds something kinda spontaneous too the hat.

I have found that 6-inch wood DPNs work best for my sock knitting outside of magic loop. The wood gives a little flex and makes it easier on the hands. I use Knitter’s Pride. Less accidental stabbing 😊. I like to experiment with different heels in my socks. Short row heels are quick and easy but a heel flap and gusset always fits well. I just did an integrated heel with Ailbíona McLochlainn’s pattern for the first time and loved it.

I would love a Knitting 101 workshop! I have learned so much while knitting my Shawlography alongside the videos. And I have the Shawl and Colourplay Stripes workshops which are amazing.
Your videos are so clearly filmed and I appreciate both the English style and Continental demos as I tend to switch between them (Norwegian purl for me but yarn held in the left hand so similar).
Your relaxed approach has inspired me to give new ideas a try and if my stitch count goes off I know I can just sneak in an extra increase or decrease! Say yes don't stress 😂

If you go to the Bakery Bears channel, Dan had trouble with finding the right DPNs too. His problem is probably your problem too. He has big hands and had the stabbing issue too. I don't remember which ones he ended up with, but I don't think they were very common. I would very much like a 101 class!

I just started back knitting after fracturing my femur…ouch to the inth degree. I accidentally found you on the internet and now cannot stop watching all your creativity. I have started your barnyard shawl and cannot get it to look as beautiful as yours. I started it about twenty times and continued with knitting it even though I see my mistakes. I love your yarns and want to order from you. I am 82 and my web skills are not what they should be. Anyway I just love your designs and I love you and wish you lived next door to me. Oh, that’s another problem..I live in Dallas Texas and it doesn’t get very cold here. Thank you for your tutorials….I want to knit your waffle shawl but i don’t have the yarns…I will work on that…I am watching your pangundo *sp?) on you tube.. I want to be able to make your designs but feel I am far from perfect. I will keep watching and practicing.
