Budget Cuts: Republicans have proposed cutting Medicaid by billions of dollars, which would have a significant impact on the program’s ability to provide healthcare coverage to millions of Americans.
Medicaid Expansion: Republicans have also been critical of Medicaid expansion, with some states refusing to expand the program or imposing restrictions on eligibility.

I had a friend act as my doula during the births of my 2nd and 3rd child. She didn't have to do much because my labor was easy (especially baby #2) and I had a good team of nurses (especially with baby #3) but she was there to assist me and my husband with whatever we needed and relay messages between us and the staff. She just made things a little simpler. She was studying to become a professional doula at the time. Unfortunately she wasn't able to complete her studies but went on to become a full-time caregiver to a special needs adult.

My sister in law just gave birth in Germany, her home country. Midwives are integrated into the medical system. She received midwifery care in the hospital leading up to and during the birth, and afterward, home visits. Yeah The doctor was present in the room, unobtrusively, for the 30 minutes of the actual delivery, so that emergency care could be administered immediately if needed. All provided under the standard health care free to every citizen.
In the U.S. my best friend (with excellent healthcare and income) had to choose between planning to give birth at midwifery center or hospital. My understanding is, if midwifery care is chosen, it can lead to delays in being transferred to emergency medical care if there are any complications. At that point you are off your birthing plan (i.e. you can't specify preset preferences to follow).
She did have complications and they nearly butchered her to death during C-section, but that's her story to tell.
At hospital, whether chosen as Plan A or due to emergency transfer, you can't receive midwifery care. Although you can be accompanied by a privately paid doula who can look after your personal needs (she did this with baby #2).

Your comment prompted me to do a quick search into midwifery in the USA and I'm shocked! Something like 8% of births have a midwife attending.
I'm Australian and it's standard here. With my first I saw the same midwife at a free pregnancy clinic every week during my pregnancy.

I completely doulas should be included in a pregnant person's care plan... At the hospital I gave birth had integrated doulas into their medical team. They are a wonderful addition.
However, doulas must be certified to meet certain standards too. In NY, they require 24 hrs of training (which is not a lot), and if you are in NYC and is part of a city program to train doulas... You have to participate in a 6 months apprenticeship after certification (which is much better).
I'm glad i live in a state that prioritize women's healthcare and lives. This is truly being pro LIFE... All lives and not just the fetus.

I was my mom’s first child in the early 70s in Pennsylvania. She went to the hospital because she thought she was in labor. The (male) doctor told her it was too early (without a physical exam) and to go home. She was in a bed waiting on paperwork when a Midwife doing clinical training for the nurses asked why she was there. My mom told her story and the Midwife asked to take a look. My mom said sure, and the Midwife told her that she wasn’t going anywhere she was so dilated.
If my mom had followed the (male) doctor’s directions after being told to ignore her own symptoms, my parents would have had to turn around and go back to the hospital because she went into hard labor soon after the Midwife saw her.

While it's not exactly the same, my wife had a home birth overseen by a midwife for our second child, and it was by far a more relaxed birthing experience. Child number three, however, came much too fast to do it again like we had planned. I only got her to the hospital with, at best, 10 mins to spare. The delivering doctor didn't even make it beforehand. He came about 10 mins afterwards 😅
All is to say that this sounds like a great program for patient outcomes.

NYC tends to be progressive and the rest conservative. So the conservatives whine that the densely populated city has an unfair advantage in voting because the majority of the state is sparsely populated. What they consistently fail to recognize is that the policies put forth that benefit people can benefit their lives too.
This program is a case in point. That Medicaid will cover Doula services will probably influence private insurance to cover it as well.

Thank you for sharing it is really good news for humanity and part of the female population ❤❤❤.
Giving birth is a traumatic and stressful experience already in it self (not to even mention the aftermath of it) and to know we cannot control most things and defend ourselves from possible medical neglect or mistakes it is a relief to know such help would be provided.
I'd love to have such a system put into place worldwide.
In France they still ask husbands or nurses to stand up on mothers bellies during labour to supposedly help expulse the baby.
Which technically isn't a technique that is allowed anymore as it is verry dangerous because there is a high risk of damaging internal organs and killing the mother.
Women have had severe injuries due to that technique and some have become disabled for life or have died.
As for racism it's an unspoken subject. It is said they have words for all poc such as the mediterranean syndrome for eg. Implying all poc should be treated differently because they all lie and fake illnesses and to not give them the same care as others but officially France is not racist.
They hardly aknowledge being sexist so...
At least we have maternity paid leave for mother and father and a reasonable social security coverage.
Hopefully one day we can care for all genders, ethnic groups, the less fortunate and so on equally all over the planet.

Maybe go back to the glue factory and consider just asking the state to pay like 5% of an uninsured mothers cost to have birth in this "free country". nobody else got a doula they are fine, USA birth deaths arent to do with doulas, and even if they fixed it is a bandaid on a broken system that kills women without an untrained emotional support person there
