- I liked the last Epi I bought so much, I had to get another. The question is, will I like this Epi just as much? I'll take a look at it, break down the specs, and provide some tone samples for your listening pleasure.

I played the gold one yesterday at a GC, these newer Epi's are outstanding.
That ephiphone really does look great. Surprised at how good the build quality was. GL to everyone in the giveaway!
Just got one today. Plays great, feels great, looks great. Love it.
Excellent demo. I plan on picking up one of these guitars tomorrow. Thanks!
Picked up that exact color and model yesterday. Love it so far!
Picked up mine in wine red last year. I absolutely love the look and feel. I really should do a proper setup soon. I have a feeling it has more potential that I’m yet to discover. Thanks for the vid!
Don't often comment, but found your video while looking into the IV. Really helpful and I've decided to grab it! Getting back into guitars after a long time away. Just wanted to say thanks for your video and keep jamming! :D
That amazing guitar has so many pickup configurations , your covered! Nice demo G mike. The epiphone les Paul ,blue sky baby ,I love it!🎸🤘
Great review!
Ooh mike... that's a looker... I like that sg too.. you have quite the collection now.. and man you have great taste I like the colors you choose.. I like earth tones and hotrod colours.. like that baby blue and red.. thanx for the content.... I jst turned 36 this may... time flies 💚✌👍👍
The middle position on the clean demo was special! And I am an overdrive kinda player.
I have a 65 goldtop epiphone reissue with p90's. Love that thing also. It is nice to know epiphone is still a viable option for fattening up your selections. My goldtop filled in my need for dual soapies in my arsenal when I just plain didn't have the money to buy another gibson. I couldn't be happier. I thought I would trade it later and now I have several other guitars that would go before my epiphone.
I like the way you do your videos.
Thanks for the review. Glad you dig the guitar.
Indeed, I do. Next, I'm thinking about getting a standard 50's model to compare with the Trad Pro.
Awesome demo nice guitar and great sound demo!
I've just got the classic heritage cherry sunburst arrived yesterday it's got exactly the same pickups alnico pros and CTS push pull split coil pots basilcly the same. I really like it. Build quality and tone is awesome
Good review and the picture quality is great, I finally got a good idea of what this guitars finish looks like, online store
images don't capture how nice the finish looks.
I realy like the finish on that pro.... I've always wanted a guitar with block inlays... great choice. .and good luck to whoever's wins the give away..someone will be very happy. And it's an awesome opportunity
Hey Mike,my son bought me the gold top TP4 for father's day last year and I love it. I upgraded the pickups to the EMG James Hetfields and it really came alive!! These are great guitars for the money
I have a traditional pro II in black and it is great!! Thx Grumpy Mike.
looks beautiful
Sounds good boss' as long as it intonates right I'll be happy'
you are 100% right about the nut! I ended up replacing the tuner as well with musically(cheap ebay) locking tuners.
Hey Grumpy Mike, recognized your handle from Know Your Gear w Phil on Fridays, and just wanted to say I really enjoyed the review. Great job man, keep doing what your doing!
great video
I will be adding if its not sold out when I get the money. Sounds great and its beautiful
this video was really helpful… GC is having a special on this guitar and I needed to know everything I could about it before I bought it… Thank you! I’m definitely going to buy it because it’s $379 for me right now!
Yup, I saw that GC had it as its deal of the day. For that price, it's a no-brainer. I hope you enjoy it.
Loved it
Thank you for the Epi Les Paul Traditional Pro 4. I bought the Goldtop. It's like I wrought your scrip for you. I dig everything about this guitar except for the Nut. Graphtec and Tusc are great products, but I found the same issues as you did down to the nut slot depth to the D and G strings having turning problems . I too will be carving my own bone nut for this axe. Best wishes and Happy Independence Day🎉
Great vidio Mike, really expresses what to expect if your thinking of buying that Epiphone. Their are so many nuts I don't care for.but at least their is something you can do about a guitar nut.lol have a great weekend!!!
really good job on your ephone.ejoy it
Man, my teenage son and I went into our lgs looking for a strat and walked out with an Epi Slash goldtop. It is the best Les Paul I have ever played. Chinee on top of it all. Not a big Slash fan, but those Custombucker's are FANTASTIC! Anyway, it is all the Les Paul ill need until I go pro lol. Great interview!
Good video you grumpy dude!!
Fantastic video my man! That voice over section was legit!! Guitar looks BA and I was impressed with both the humbucking and single split tones.. Let's all be good ✌
Thanks, Charles, I really do appreciate the kind words. When it come to making these videos, I haven't really got a clue what I'm doing. I'm just sort of flying by the seat of my pants (whatever in the hell that means). My goal is to make the content look and sound as good as possible while providing useful information. I've a long way to go, but your comment is very encouraging.
@@grumpymikeguitar The quality of this video is great! Well done.
I really enjoyed this video, I hit like and also I'm now a new subscriber.
I'm really glad you liked the video and I thank you for the sub. Be good.
Thanks for this video!! Great review. I bought this guitar a while back and have the exact same issue with the G string. Crazy that you are having this issue as well. It sometimes fall out of tune after a bend and I can turn the tuner almost a full turn before any change in tuning. I figured I had just done a terrible job stringing that one up, but I guess I'll run it by the shop near me to look at the nut.
Yup, just a bit of attention to the nut should go a long way towards fixing the problem. I basically just polished up the nut slots and gave a little dab of nut sauce in each and it was a big improvement.
I've developed a Les Paul style fetish lately and the Epiphone definitely fit the bill especially in that color blue I also have a Blue fetish thanks for the review I might just pick one up
Good video. Was looking at this specific guitar...and some reviews...so here I am :)
Only owned imitation Les Pauls, since 1991. Selling for $409 at GC.
Thanks! Subbed and liked!
Sounds so good eith dirt on the signal...ooooohh🤔😃
(Nov '23) To me this Epi Trad Pro IV joins the Studio as best bang-for-buck in a Les Paul in this mid-range price class. Btw the coil split sounds on these guitars are actually pretty distinctive and useful. You can make 'em twang a little if you need to.
I do like the fact these new Epiphones have a more Gibsony headstock.
I have the faded black model,it's great for the money.
Looking at these guitars now. On sale at G-C for $399. That's a deal for what you get. Anyway - great vid. I enjoyed this. Subbed you.
Same one I own. Will be buried with it plus the Paul Stanley signature Iceman!
Hi Mike..great presentation! I just bought the Gold Top model and Absolutely Love this guitar....I also have a Squire Affinity Strat that I plan on putting the Jeff Beck designed Noiseless pickups and I also have a Classic Vibe Startcaster that sounds Amazing as well.
Looking forward to seeing more of your videos
Thanks for the kind words. I plan to pick up one of the new Affinity Strats as soon as Sweetwater gets the in. I'm looking forward to checking one out.
@@grumpymikeguitar well I don't know you feel about Musician's Freind, but that is who delivered my Pro IV...Best part was I only paid 399 Brand New!! Everybody else wanted 449 and that still would have been a bargain
Squire is unveiling their New Affinity line with a Lot of upgrades according to an email they sent me.
*Squier, It says it both on the headstock and the neck plate. Don't understand how owners can get that wrong so often.
Just added this (same finish) to the collection and love it! I especially dig the feel of the C neck with its grainy satin finish. I agree that the action could be better but fixed that rather quickly.
Yup, I like this guitar. Lots of fun to play. Probably gonna get new pups one of these days though.
How did you fix the action bro !? Thanks
@@2buckgeo843 Lowered the bridge and tweaked the nut slots
@@ronnance thanks !
@@2buckgeo843 my pleasure! Btw-I folded a piece of sand paper to deepen the nut slots and then used a pencil to add a thin layer of graphite in each slot before restringing.
Nice 🤘🏼
im 90% sure i'm getting that worn pacific blue in a few weeks. I wanted black but the more I see that won pacific blue color the more i fall in love with it
I’m thinking he same thing as of late....
What’s the update? End of getting it? What’s the verdict!
@@TheyCallMeRabbit98 lmao i ended up getting a purple burst LTD 256 instead. It's excellent
That is a nice LP. I only have one Epiphone. It is a 2014 ltd. Edition Wildkat in wine red. That is a beautiful LP. Always wanted an LP but never seem to find one I connect with lol.
I bought one of these guitars after watching this video and I'm glad I did! They normally sell for $499.00, but Guitar Center had a sale on these, so I got mine for only $399.00! (These are a Guitar Center exclusive) Mine has the same issue (the nut) and the action is high, but the guitar is going to my repair tech for a full setup including adjusting the nut slots. I'm also getting the "String Butler" for this guitar, which helps massively for keeping Gibson style guitars in tune. I bought a Blue one and I love the color. I'll probably change the pickups in the future, but the stock ones are pretty good for now for an Epiphone. I'm also going to install Grover locking tuners. They are the same diameter so they're a direct replacement (no drilling needed!) and an easy to install upgrade. The guitar also has a SOLID MAPLE TOP instead of a maple veneer and a LIFETIME WARRANTY! Thanks again for a thorough video review!
Congrats on the guitar. I'm still enjoying the hell out if mine..I love all the upgrades you have planed, however, if I may, I would suggest holding off on the String Butler. Have the nut worked on first. Better yet, replace it with a well cut bone nut. The issues with Gibsons and tuning problems are mostly over exaggerated. A good and properly cut nut should fix most issues. I could be wrong, but I sort of view String Butlers as more of a gimmick than anything else.
You must be the grumpy mike that I always hear about on Phil McKnight's channel. Nice to put a face to a name! Thanks for a great video on this Epiphone.
Yup, that's me. Thanks for checking out the channel.
Sounds good thats the only body still i dont have is an lp style. Need to fix that soon
Nissssssssssssssssssce 🍻
GMG Funny I can hear the ghost of Randy Rhodes in your distortion tone. Skynrd too. Thumbs up. MTW and 99.
that guitar is awesome cause i have it
👍🏻👍🏻
👍👍👍
That's a purdy geetar Mike \m/ Oh dayum, you have a leaky JD bottle too :-0)
PHH yup, the past is better left buried. I dig that blue burst, very nice, and Zebras look good on it. But I just can't get over the fake looking veneer on the back of all the Epis now. Veneer front I will tolerate cause they can be pretty nice, but give me 2, 3 or even 4 piece bare wood grain slabs on the back, I want to see what it's made of.
Yeah, I must agree, but at least it's the back.
The Trad Pro 1 had a rosewood fretboard!
My sister's husband has a red EVH 1984 era stripe. Oooh thats a guitar! mtw
Thanks for the review. I like the sound coming out. I’m thinking about buying this guitar as my first guitar. What do you think?
Excellent choice. It's a very good guitar.
I recently purchased a pacific blue one of these guitars, and literally no one has done a review on them, so thank you very much! One question though, i really like the pickups, but im thinking of getting seymour duncans, should I switch pickups? If so, what seymour duncans have similar tone to the original pickups?
It really depends on what kind of sound you're looking for. I tend to go for PAF style pups over higher output ones. Of course, this is a great guitar to try multiple brands and styles to find out what you really like. The great thing about pickups is that you can change them out whenever you want.
Thanks for watching the video.
@@grumpymikeguitar Thanks!
Just subbed! I play Epiphones on my channel. I've got a Trad Pro3 in pellahm blue and a Quilt Top Pro in Trans blue... wish they would have made one of the new Trad4s in pellahm blue id but one. Not a fan of the Worn finishes
@Grumpy Mike Guitar
I’m thinking about buying an Epiphone Les Paul TradPro IV. If you were to swap out the pickups, what would you replace them with?
Funny you should ask. Just today I was trying to decide whether to keep or sell this guitar. I really like it, but I also need to fund new stuff for the channel.
If I decide to keep it, I definitely know I want PAF style pups. Nothing about this guitar says high output to me. I'm kind of thinking a Pearly Gates set might go nice.
Good review. I found the same thing with nut on the last Epiphone I bought.
When you said "make a bone nut.." Do you make it from a raw bone, or are you buying a blank? I have access to bones I'd like to make a nut from (deer, elk, bear) but don't know how to prepare raw bone to make a nut.
I just get bone blanks, although, I have given thought to starting from scratch.
sweet guitar brother!
id swap out the "fendery" strap buttons for some "mushroom" style ones lol!
nothing wrong with "fendery" but not on a LP or any "gibson" style guitar...thats just my pennys worth haha!!
Hey my brother! I bought a 2014 model Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Pro used from Guitar Center back before the COVID balloon went up. It has identical specs to yours except the finish. Mine has a transparent wine red gloss finish on top of a slightly flamed maple top. The back, sides and neck are a satin black. Mine also has what you call the "hideous headstock", which I don't have a problem with. I pretty much agree with you on the pickups, I may change them out the next time I restring it. I didn't hear you mention what the price was on yours. I paid $300 for mine, including what looked like a brand new Gator hard shell case! Mine did not have any issues with the nut, It came to me with a Nubone nut. Whether that was stock or the previous owner replaced it, I don't know.
This one was $449 new and no case or gig bag which kind if sucks, but, not surprising. I have a feeling that prices for the better budget guitars might really start to creep up soon. They've already begun to over the past year or so. Still, for the price, this does hold its own.
@@grumpymikeguitar Yep! I've heard Phil McKnight talking about people paying more for some midrange guitars than they cost new! I'd say we both got a pretty good deal on ours.
The tones are so crisp..the only thing to make it better is, it should be shipped to me immediately. So i can plug it into my Marshall
That can be arranged from your local guitar store or online for the low low price of around $449.95. I doubt you will be disappointed.
@@grumpymikeguitar lol, in 30plus years of playing i had never played a single cut guitar, until just a few months ago. I frickin' love em.
Her brother I also recommend RATIO tuning heads ? Look em up they fixed my tuning stability 99% honestly on my epiphone les Paul standard pro , “ratio namebrand”
I like the ratios, but there rely is nothing wrong with the Grovers. This is purely a problem with the nut.
@@grumpymikeguitar gotcha! I watched so many videos in a row , I heard someone talking about the g going out constantly, got confused as usual my brother thanks for the video
Mike, thanks for this excellent review. I bought one of these also (gold metallic worn) and have the very same problem with tuning the G string - it wants to be just a little lower pitch in order to sound in tune, especially on first position chords. I'd like to fix this - any suggestions about how to adjust the nut? Or should i take it to a pro? Otherwise, like you, I find this guitar a very solid one and a great value, price-wise.Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Howdy Russell, the first thing I'd try is a little nut sauce or even just graphite in the slot. That should help at least some. Next, take a small piece of400 or 600 grit sandpaper, fold it over tightly, and lightly work it through the slot. Don't be aggressive with it. The idea is just to smooth out the slot. Hope this helps.
@@grumpymikeguitar Thanks, Mike, for the prompt and helpful feedback. If I'm able to resolve this one issue, I'll be very pleased with this purchase! I have another "bargain" purchase (Fender Squire Affinity HSS FMT) that seems to have the very same issue on the G string, so I'll try your helpful tip on that, too. Again - much appreciated. Your entire review was outstanding and I'm sure helped a lot of guitar players on a budget make an informed decision on whether to purchase this guitar.
@@senseiruss 😂I think you might be spying on me😂. Watch for my next video.
@@grumpymikeguitar Hah! Looking forward to it! Thanks again, Mike!
Hey Grumpy, it sounds great! Any chance of doing a side by side comparison with the Epiphone and the SC 450 Plus before you give it away? Staying good...
I will see about it, but if the winner chooses it, I might not have time before I have to ship it out.
Just ordered this guitar (same color) and it should be here in two days. I have a set of Gotoh locking tuners I plan on adding as well as a Seymour Duncan SH11 Custom Custom and a '59 for the neck. I took these out of another project guitar that I sold and they have been sitting in a drawer collecting dust. I figure now is a good time to put them to use...lol. Do you still have this guitar?....if so, what is your opinion after playing it for a year?
I do still have this guitar. After doing a little work on the nut and setting it up to my liking, I have been enjoying it quite a bit. I would recommend spending some time with it before replacing the pickups. The stock ones aren't really that bad. At least spend a little time with them. Down the road, they may end up being perfect for another project.
As for myself, I plan on putting a set of Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in it eventually, whenever I can get around to it.
GMG : Happy Halloween weekend to you, too. Do you have a Frankenstrat? Ha Ha. from mtw in L.A.
I had a Frankenstrat but it got startled by a Firebird and ran off. 😂🤣😂
just picked up the traditional pro iv what is you're favorite amp to get a blues tone
It really depends on what day it is. 😂 Lately, I've been having a blast with the PRS HDRX 20. It has blues tones just oozing out of it. My Hotrod Deluxe sounds great, but it's freakishly loud. I would really love to pick up a Deluxe Reverb or maybe a Super Sonic.
Looks turquoise in the middle. Is that just the video or is it a lighter blue?
I would seriously like to know how you got the tone for your overdrive sound.I am guilty of being a tone chaser and I am just lost
IMHO, what works for me I to set a tube amp right at or just a hair past the edge of breakup. This way, you can roll back the volume on the guitar and get a nice clean tone and by bringing the volume up, you introduce just a bit of dirt which will a touch more thickness and character to your tone.
For overdrive, I am partial to Klon style pedals. I usually have 3 dirt pedals on my board at any given time and one of the is always a Klon clone because I can't afford a real one 😂. The key is to not go nuts with the gain knobs on the pedal. Start with it almost all the way down, the dial it up slowly till you find the sweet spot.
As for EQ, one the amp, I start with everything at noon and the add or subtract as needed. I would also recommend not spending more than a half hour at a time trying to dial in a tone. Your ears get tired and it will become more difficult to distinguish differences. More often than not, the only thing you will achieve is a severe case of frustration.
Hope this helps. Keep on chasing. That tone is in there somewhere.
Do you know if the pots are the long or short shaft?
I could go pull them to be 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure they are long shaft. LP style guitars with a carve top usually need the long shaft to accommodate the thickness of the maple top.
Hey mike im a new guitar player and i know very little about guitars , i got this guitar for my bday on the 6th so i was wondering if you can help me and tell me what equipment i should buy, amps etc.. i only have the guitar i dont even have a pick, thank you mike 🙏
Howdy, Axel, happy birthday and welcome to the beginning of your guitar journey. It will take some discipline and work, but I promise you it will be fun.
Please send me an email to grumpymike335@gmail.com and I'd be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability.
@@grumpymikeguitar thank you mike
Got this same model, which humbuckers will be compatible with the slip function?
I assume you mean the coil split. Splitable humbuckers have 4 wires, whereas non-splitable only have 2. Most pickup makers make a wide range of both.
@@grumpymikeguitar Yes, the splittable. I'll start looking for an upgrade. Didn't know that this guitar had that feature.
@Shumo311 yes, the volume knobs are push/pull switches. Pulling each knobs up splits the coil for that pickup.
the nut doesn't need to be recut if it plays in tune, sounded like it was, yes?
Might I recommend you check out videos such as Phillip Mcknight's on properly cut nuts. Too deep, not deep enough, there's quite a bit more to it than just being in tune. And, by the way, as I said, I not only had trouble keeping the G string in tune, it was also difficult just to get it in tune.
Is your 3 way switch toggle loose?
Howdy Reed, no, the toggle switch on mine is just fine. Sorry I didn't respond earlier. There have been a few comments that have slipped by me.
#US can you do a Q&A btw that sounds really good
I really hope to do a series viewer Q&A videos. I've been trying to come up with a format that is at least a bit unique and original, but it is in the works.
@@grumpymikeguitar I’m one of your new fans and I want to know more about you like what got you interested In the guitar how did you learn to play it
I have 2 older brothers, they are twins, and when I was very young, 4 or 5, they started learning to play drums. I watched what they were doing and soon learned that drums sort of came natural to me. They switched to guitar, so naturally I followed and became obsessed with them. It is the one and only thing that has held my interest from then on. And yes, I have considered therapy for that. 🤣
@@grumpymikeguitar see im the oldest and but i do have cousins that play the the piano and drums and im more interested in guitars and I’ve always wanted one but unfortunately i can’t really afford them
Where your caveat is concerned, I just bought a Gibson LP Tribute with 4/64" at the first fret on the bass side and 2/64" at the first fret on the treble side. Both measurements easily double what they should have been according to Gibson hotshot luthier Jim DeCola. This, on a guitar that was supposedly 'Plek'd'.
You got a deal, man. I had to pay $1000 more to get a Lester with a poorly cut nut . . . 🤯
Good review, BTW. I have several Gibson Les Pauls, including a couple Custom Shops, but I still regret selling the sweet Epi LP Standard Pro I sold years ago to make room for one of them. It was one of the more uncommon Indonesians and it was a player. Same thing goes for the MIJ Epiphone Elite Custom (before Gretsch forced the name change to 'Elitist') that made way for a '68 Reissue Custom. Should'a kept both of them.
If you get tired of it let me know, it is Purty.
I think this one is going to stick around here for a while. Once I get the nut issue resolved and the setup done, I intend to spend a lot of time playing it, and who knows, probably doing a few mods.
One thing, the uncovered pickups makes it look cheap, in my eyes anyway
That is one of those preferences sort of things. I actually like the look of uncovered pups, especially the zebras.
Covered vs uncovered sounds tests has naked giving better clarity too. I don't have to look at them when I'm playing. But each to their own, neither style is going away.
Uncovered pickups provide for a slightly stronger magnetic field around the strings which I think might account for a little more gain and clarity. As for the aesthetics, it depends on the look of the rest of the guitar. Some look terrible with open coils, while with others, they look awesome. In the end, though, tone is king.
I see everyone has already mentioned it but I also find that naked pups do add more of bite..
which epiphone guitar is better
Les paul standard
Les paul traditional pro iv
Hi Samuel, they are both fine guitars. It really depends on personal preference. If you want coil splits and Don't mind the satin finish, the Pro V is the way to go. If you want the glossy finish and have no need for the coil splits, the Standard is a more "traditional" LP. I should also point out that the Pro V comes stock with a treble bleed circuit.
Hope this helps.
@@grumpymikeguitar From what I understood then here what would matter would be which one I like more.
Yes, I don't think you can go wrong with either guitar as far as build quality goes. The biggest differences are in features and price. With the Standard, you will pay more for a guitar that is fairly close to the Gibson Standard. The Pro V has added functionality, but has a much less flashy finish at a lesser price. I've found both guitars play and sound good. It really all depends on what you want and what you're willing to spend.
@@grumpymikeguitar You clarified some doubts for me, in the store I went to they differ by 60 dollars, and the standard one they have is a color that I don't like, so I'm going to buy the traditional pro because it's in black and cherry, they are the colors that I like the most. I liked those guitars👋👋👋🎸
Excellent!!! 🤘 I hope it enspires you to play and create amazing music.
