In 1962, the US Navy stationed my dad (and us), in Scotland. The Beatles were just getting big and, as a 12 year old girl, I fell in love with them. My dad couldn't stand them and their long hair. We moved back to the States at the end of 1963 and brought back their first two albums. I told all my new school friends about them. Then, they hit America.

I love how this concert, which for weeks was being discussed being done in India, or The Coliseum, in front of the Pyramids.....Then one of them said, "Oh sod it, let's just go on the roof". So instead a big show, they tried to get arrested, for a great scene in the movie being made about them at the time (Let it Be). Although this is in their last 18 months of being a band, they still seem to be having fun, when they play together as a band.

To put things in perspective the Beatles were playing on the roof top of their recording studio. The guys in the background were sound men, equipment roadies, and office workers for the record company. They were up there in the cold for a while and the Beatles were doing several takes of songs. The police in the background came to shut it down because of the traffic jam of cars and people below.

No one can underestimate the impact The Beatles had and still have, they only recorded together for 7 years, there are some bands who release 2or3 albums over that time, but The Beatles recorded their entire catalogue in that short space of time. Guys, if you want to fully fall in love with The Beatles, and you want to hear more music like "Don't Let Me Down", you should seriously watch the film "Get Back"! It is a 3-episode mini-series documentary based on the 1970 film called "Let it Be". Director Peter Jackson (of Lord of the Rings-fame) took the 1970 film and was given access to all the archived footage which was not used in the original release, and he re-cut the movie and expanded and reshaped the story. Originally it was an 80-minute film but Get Back was released, in 2022, as a 3-part, 8-hour series! It is an amazing film. You get to see the working relationship the band had and also the brotherhood and love they had for each other. But, the project was very difficult and almost caused the band to break up! Jackson's film is a huge improvement over the 1970 Michael Lindsey-Hogg film, which was considered a downer, when it came out. You really have to see it! You will become emotionally invested in this band, I tell you!

The Beatles, started out (pupa stage) as "The Quarrymen" in 1956. In the summer of 1957, little 14 year old Paul McCartney went to see the quarrymen play at a local church fair. During intermission, he played 20 flight rock, an Eddie Cochran song, for John, and was asked to be in the band. He joined not long after. In 1958, little 14 year old George Harrison joined, but the quarrymen were done, it was just John, Paul, and George, all 3 on guitars. No drummer, no bass. For some little gigs, they called themselves "Long John and the silver beetles", then in 1960 it was "Silver Beetles", later that year, John's friend Stu Sutcliff was brought in on bass, and suggested the play on words with the Beatnik poets, (beat poets), and the Beat of a drum should change their name to The Beatles, and then in 1962 The Beatles picked up Ringo (got rid of their one beat drummer Pete) and boom! Record contracts, big theatres, touring Europe. By 63 they were the biggest band in the UK and Europe, and by the end of the year, they had a #1 hit in the US just weeks after Kennedy's assassination. They cheered up America all throughout 1964 with their cheerful mop top image, and then every year after they let more of themselves as individuals show in their music. No 2 of their nearly 300 song catalog sound the same, and although Lennon hated people attaching meaning to his songs, he wanted the overall arch of the bands music to be about love, and peace and fun. He did write "I am the Walrus koo koo ka joob" just to piss of those trying to figure out what it meant. It was all about painting a picture in your head with words. Clever turns of phrase, smart rhyme choices, and simple melodies with a great beat.

My parents who were from a generation who had loved their music, embraced our interest in groups like the Beatles, took us to their first movie, bought us fan mags; I was a pre- teenager. They would go on to encourage us; once I found my mother singing along with Light My Fire by the Doors while in the kitchen. Our parents were Southern Baptists(!), but music had meant a lot to their generation, my father was a musician. It was a really cool thing for them to do.

What an iconic performance, those sideburns and those coats LOL Dear Prudence is one of my favorite Beatles songs, and of course Yesterday both are so beautiful.
There's a cute little movie called Yesterday where there's a meteor or something like that and the world wakes up without ever having the beatles, only one dude remembers them and he goes on a quest to try and get all those great songs back into the world, makes you realize just how many songs they're actually were... don't remember too much of the movie I was distracted, I took my mom who's in a wheelchair so there's a lot going on there and then as soon as the movie started there was an earthquake! I do remember thinking it's a great Rainy Day movie if y'all ever see it pop up on the tube and there's nothing else to do it's worth a watch✌😎🖤🌟

I believe that is "Yesterday" and it's a pretty silly idea since the popular music in this alternate reality is more or less the same which would have been derived directly or indirectly from the Beatles. To have them suddenly not exist, the world itself would be radically different in my opinion.

Even though The Beatles r called the greatest band of all time today... Back in the day, people tried to bury them from day 1...
    1) When The Beatles started playing gigs in 1960, they had to go to Hamburg in West Germany to play and were even deported after German authorities were tipped off that guitarist George Harrison was only 17 and in the country underage. They returned to Hamburg in 1961 after Harrison turned 18.
    2) Between 1961 and 1962, The Beatles were actively playing Liverpool and Hamburg in the clubs... but the UK music industry thought they were a joke and refused to sign them. They opened for all their American rock n' roll heroes when they came to England... Their fans called them the 'greatest rock and roll band' before they even had a record out and filled the clubs they played in.
    3) Producer George Martin was not impressed w/ The Beatles' demos and nearly passed on them... However, he met the band and found them cheeky and charming and knew they had something special... Martin felt that they needed a new drummer and after Ringo Starr replaced drummer Pete Best in 1962, he still thought they were not good enough. That changed as they scored their first UK hits in late '62.
    4) While The Beatles toured Europe in 1963 w/ #1 records... in America, they were still a work in progress. They said that they would not tour the USA until they had a #1 record there... Despite the growing popularity, several Beatles singles failed to reach #1 on the US charts.
The #1 record finally came in late '63 - "I want to hold your hand" became a US #1 single and Beatlemania came to America in early 1964.
    5) By 1966, John Lennon's humorous remark about The Beatles becoming "more popular than Jesus"... started a firestorm of controversy by right wing groups in America, including the KKK (which was a powerful, bigoted organization at the time w/ political ties) and the death threats came streaming in... Fed up w/ the controversy... the constant security on the road... and unable to hear themselves play live because of screaming crowds, The Beatles announced in 1966 that they were done touring.
    6) The Beatles' radical change of image in 1967 w/ the album "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts club band" was not received well initially... But after a while, the album was hailed as a masterpiece... Around this time, the UK authorities targeted The Beatles trying to bust them for drug use... George Harrison (and The Rolling Stones) were both arrested by the infamous Sergeant Pilcher (who was famous for arresting celebrities in England)... Pilcher himself was arrested years later for drug offenses ... fired from the police force and imprisoned.
    Finally,
    7) After The Beatles breakup went public in 1970... the former members were involved in litigation w/ their finances... The former Beatles were actually targeted by the US government under Pres. Richard Nixon... John Lennon was ordered to be deported from the US because of his anti-war activism; the FBI tapped his phones and put him under surveillance ... Paul McCartney was denied a US visa for years because of a 'cannabis bust' on his record... George Harrison organized the charity 'Concert for Bangladesh' in 1971 to raise funds for aid to refugees in the war-torn nation next to India; Nixon (who was funding Pakistan and their war against Bangladesh) ordered the IRS to target those charity efforts... John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison sued former manager Allen Klein in the 70's for mismanagement; Paul McCartney refused to sign w/ Klein when The Beatles were active.
And then, John Lennon was shot to death in late 1980 by a deranged fan in NYC at the entrance of his apartment building... Before his death in 2001, George Harrison was attacked and stabbed multiple times in his home in late 1999 by a deranged individual.

As far as bands that had the same lineup from start to finish, the only one I can think of is ZZ Top, for 51 years until bassist Dusty Hill's death. I thought The Police might have had the same trio for their relatively short run but I looked it up and they had a guitarist named Henry Padovani initially before Andy Summers joined them early on. Rush had the same trio from 1975 on but of course had a different drummer (John Rutsey) for their first album.

People at the back were all involved with Beatles every day. It was their job. They'd heard it all. They were looking down four or five floors to the street below with crowds that were clogging the traffic and, eventually generating a significant safety problem as buses, ambulances, and fire engines could not get through. I've known the area for 50 years. When it's gridlocked, nothing moves, everyone is late for appointments (eg, in my case once nearly missed my son's wedding).

The Beatles are still going, in a sense. To this very day, The Beatles are the biggest selling music artist of all time, and nobody else even comes close (do a simple google search and you'll see what I'm talking about). They have the most #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 (with 20 #1 hits), and 35 overall top 10 hits. They released their final single only 4 months ago on November 3rd, 2023. The song is called "Now and Then". It deputed at #7 on the billboard Hot 100 and peaked at #1 on the UK Spotify Charts, knocking Taylor Swift down to the #2 position. Just FYI. Here's a link to the last Beatles song and a short film on the making of the song. You should do a reaction to the 12 minute video first, then the music video afterwards (in a separate video), and try and make sure to give the Beatles their props next time for being the biggest selling music artist of all time, even to this very day.

The Rolling Stones are still going at it. They’ve been around for over 65 years. Charlie passed away a few years ago. I didn’t think that Keith would make it past 30, but he’s still rocking in his 80s.

This was the first live performance they had done in years, and was their last one together (Jan 1969.) This is the famous “rooftop concert” that is explained in the film in ‘Let It Be’ and in the final episode of Peter Jackson’s recent documentary special ‘Get Back.’ The films show the reactions of people down in the street and in nearby buildings, and why the cops were there.

The reason they weren't paying attention is because the cops were there to get them off the roof for disruptive of the crowd down in the street. So they were talking to the bobbies (police) that they were almost finished. They were concerned about all the people that were on the lol the surrounding roofs too. Anyways guys that was their last song together. Take care guys Hollywood and Smokey and stay real and awesome and cool 😎 lol Dueces always ✌️✌️

The people in the back were crew for either the filmmakers or band. Or Apple Corp employees.
The song was directed to Yoko Ono.
This was the first live performance in 2.5 years, and final live performance ever.
    AC/DC changed bassists and drummers.
Technically, The Who only replaced people after the original musician died. Then that spot changed a lot, but no original members were replaced. The band did break up for a while in the 1980s.

I think this was the last time they performed together in public. They were in the studio and a lot of friction and anger towards each other. They decided to go up on the roof and play and kinda part ways on good terms. I always thought this was John telling Yoko that I'm going all in on this. I'd rather be with you than be a Beatle. Just don't let me down.

U2 has been together since the early 80's. The Beatles are the biggest of all time. All their albums were recorded between 1962-1970. The songwriting team of Lennon & McCartney dominated the singles & albums released, but they also wrote individual songs under the team's name and competed with each other. Once George Harrison started writing songs, he was only given about two tracks out of 14 on their albums. George was getting better, and his songs were just as good as Lennon & McCartney's, yet he was not given more tracks to include on the albums. Ringo then started writing songs and there was not enough room on an album for all their songs. Frustration and bruised egos got in the way. There was just too much talent in this band to last. There were bad feelings between band members when they broke up, but fences were later mended. Each one of them said they were brothers, and like brothers they fought, disagreed and made up.

For a bands that stayed together...
Rolling Stones as far as Jagger & Richards are concerned. They were at primary school together in Dartford, down river from where I live. They attended each other's birthday parties, then went to different middle and secondary schools. So they go back even further than Lennon and McCartney who met up as mid-teens. J&R met up again age about 18 or 19 on railway station platform. Brian Jones initiated what became RS but checked out mentally, emotionally, doping and died, to be replaced by Mick Taylor for a few years and for their peak period. Ronnie Wood took over from MT and has been with the group for decades. Bill Wyman retired and had grown to fear flying. Charlie Watts died recently.
The Who are still going with Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey who were at school together as teenagers. Keith Moon and John Entwistle died. The drummer is Zak Starkey, son of Ringo. It was Moon who gave Zak his first drum kit and taught him to play

Egos aren't the only thing that breaks up bands. I played in weekend cover bands for 20 years and split into 4 bands. It's almost like a marriage with 4-5 people. Goals and visions can vary, life events happen, schedules conflict, etc. But definitely not just egos.

The last of the Beatles . They grew out of it ,they were kids who were put in an unreal position. Impossible to go out ,impossible to say anything without being distorted. As far as society-You can’t understand how hard it was to have long hair or not dress in an acceptable way. Heck my brother got thrown out of church because his hair almost touched his shoulders 😂 He looked remarkably like the Christ image on the wall but it was unacceptable. The pressure to conform 🤯

The record company begged them to promote the Let It Be album but they had no intentions of playing live anymore. No realistic venue could be found so they said screw it and played a few songs on the roof of Apple Studios. Next thing you know half of London stops to look up in wonder and it's forever the "Let It Be" concert. It's good to see John so into it cause it was the last time they'd play live together and then lots of drama. Freaking Beatles. lol.

    This is a fkg. masterpiece.
Any song you can sing along to the very first time you hear it (and want to!) means genius.
(True with Bob Marley songs too)😎
This was a B-side single and received almost zero attention (they were SO prolific) but I remember it immediately turned my head “This melody is SO beautiful” yet simple, heartfelt, not showy.
Cool you guys recognized its beauty and genius immediately too 😉
