I remember Paul was running late for the gig as he was busy recording Gossip just down the road. Coloured Girls just played an opening set of covers and some of their own original's (I think). Blew me away how good they were. Love this video as it so accurately shows this great period of Oz music and specifically the Hopetoun. Many memorable nights spent here.

I have been listening to Paul since 1987 when unexpectedly I moved 2000 miles back to my hometown as my father had passed. Darling it Hurts was playing on a local station and it captured my ear and the rest was history. Going About Father’s Business and so much of Gossip rang true to what I was going though. I lived, loved and learned through deceptive heartbreak with “Under the Sun” and continued to enjoy Paul so much. Met the love of my life 4000 miles away, and yes, she became moved by Paul. We had the privilege of meeting Paul on the streets of London after a show around 2014....how many artists would ask if you would like a piece of their Lindt chocolate bar? Thanks Paul for some of the best soundtracks of our lives.

Me too! I was living in San Diego in 1987, and I heard Paul and a few of the boys perform on a public radio station from L.A., then the next night he and the Messengers played a full show in San Diego, on an off-night from their US tour with Crowded House. Know him personally, seen dozens of shows since.
Still looking for an Aussie wife.

Paul Kelly has become this 'legend' of Australian music.
Amazing,to remember he'd played at the Hopetoun. You pushed the door, looked to your left (from memory) and there was that night's band.
Such great advertising, too. Colourful chalk on a blackboard, just outside the front door.
Not uncommon to have technical issues during the set, when a quick witted band member would start playing incidental music,to indicate awkward feelings while the technical problem was being sorted out,and someone in the crowd to shout out something dumb,or funny.
Still,I never received electric shocks from the microphones, like I did at the Evening Star hotel (five minutes down the road),and I didn't have to gather the milk crates together to build the stage before we started the gig, like at the Sandringham hotel, abut ten minutes across town.
    Luxury.

Very noice! Thank you, thank you, thank you. The best kept secret on youtube! Kelly's best band and best vintage. Very hard to find in such nice condition, sound wise, and the fashion is pure Oz 80's. A great social document of how the great gigs were always at the local.

Under the sun is the best work in the decade 1980. Gossip is one of my favourite recordings.

The Coloured Girls /Messengers would never have achieved what they did without Steve Connolly.
As Paul Kelly said, Steve saw the entire song and knew what mattered.
He was a better guitar player than any I have heard with Paul Kelly since.

He is one of the very best. They could not tour in the US as the Colored Girls so they became the Messengers. Buy their stuff . . you will never be disappointed.

AwW the Hoie! Fantstic. Australian pub bands were awesome in the late 80s: loads of venues and bands and cross-pollination with band members jumping around gigging with other bands

My band The Hard Word had the pleasure of supporting Paul and his mob for two nights at The Tivoli in Sydney around this time. This footage is National Archive stuff! RIP Stevie Connoly, beautiful man.

I believe the old bass player Greg Manson is in posession of some tapes. I can chase him up next week when I get back the Paul McCartney gig in Sydney. Stay on me about. @@ricardopotoroo1993

Unfortunately I do not recall who I obtained this recording from.

He's nothing without the girls. He's released his albums..not same. He made it with the girls...other than that he was destined to be a pub band. He knew it

Well that's utter rubbish. The Dots were quite excellent, with no small thanks to their frontman Paul Maurice Kelly.
Paul has the musical vision the other boys lack.
