Elden Ring solved a 7-year old mystery

- Our understanding of From Software's older games has been improved significantly by Elden Ring, owing to its voracious need for additional content.

If you put SnakeSoul's ID into the boss healthbar menu in Dark Souls III, it displays the name Evil Spirits, which provides another sort of connection to the Ulcerated Tree Spirit.
Makes me wonder about all the bodies chilling at the roots in the boss rooms of catacombs. Not always good to "return to the Erdtree," I suppose.
I like to think the long lost Northern Limit did eventually become realised within Elden Ring also.
@@pious83 I commented something similar elsewhere. But indeed, Elden Ring features a mountainous snowy region far to the north, which is, or was, home to a civilization of giants. Perhaps they finally managed to pull off that cancelled idea from Demons' Souls. Similarly the supposed giants from DeS where large humanoid animals. Very similar to Blaidd and the beastmen of Farum Azula if you think about it.
@@inakilukac Yep. I wonder now if From didn't let Bluepoint add the Sixth Archstone to DeS remake _because_ this area was planned for Elden Ring/the next Souls game?
Were you joking when you said it was one of the most impressive grab attacks?

FromSoft: You guys really want to know about SnakeSoul, huh? Well here's 15 of them. Enjoy.
Following Zullie for these years has been so rewarding. We've been able to see the start of mysteries, all the way to their conclusion, that we never would've known existed otherwise.
You're not even wrong by the time I hit Lyndell I already had maxed out my flask count because of how many optional ulcerated tree spirits I fought against those bastards are annoying but also low-key kind of fun to fight.
I mean, context is everything. Mechanically is the Snake Soul, but that doesn't tell us anything about it's implications in the Dark Souls lore.
@@cgecko3 My first meeting with the tree spirit was not fun at all. I wanted to get the banished knight ashes at the heroes tomb at the beginning of the game. I had mage build, and often relied on spirit to distract boss, but that fight did not allow spirit summon nor helper summon, so I had spent the next 2 hours to learn how to melee down the boss.
At least after that i never got into trouble with that boss again.
@@cgecko3 not going to lie I think I've died to SnakeSouls more than any other boss in Elden Ring
Here's one that will appear under you in a rot river, have fun.
This makes so much sense - the Pus of Man always seemed like an extremely interesting and almost incomplete part of Dark Souls 3. We experience it a few times early on and assume it's going to be relevant in some way, but we never really get a follow-up.
In my opinion it's just an "explosion" caused by the pressure of the humanity on the dark sign, Gwyn's mark wasn't made to last that long and eventually the Dark Soul inside the body destroyed it to come out as Human Pus
At first I thought it did have something to do with Aldrich, because of the way he's shown in the intro.
I never put much thought into it, but I suppose I took it to be a more advanced state of the juiced up red-eye enemies, because of... well, the red eyes, which I believe are associated with the Abyss?
@@TheNickofTime they are, but the fact is that the Abyss wasn't supposed to behave in that way, the locusts in the ringed city describe the Abyss as a peaceful place, in my opinion Gwyn's mark was made to hide the true power of the Dark Soul because knowing it the pigmies would have become his competitors as gods/kings of that world, but this unbalanced the natural order of things (4 white souls and a dark one) and forced the Dark Soul to explode and create the various Abysses we can find
Dark Souls 3 in general feels incomplete and rushed
That concept art gave me chills the first time I saw it. So sad it never came to be. The Eclipse Sun bleeding/leaking light over the Kiln was definitely a great moment but something about a bright yellow Sun literally bleeding onto a mountain of corpses beyond the distance of a completely twisted, eldritch apocalyptic landscape has so much more intensity and madness to it
Interestingly that area is the Dreg Heap just a previous iteration of it.
Yea I was disappointed with the final product a bit still a great game though
especially since the abyss snake seems gigantic! you can see the rest of its body way off into the background
Seeing all the repurposed assets in Elden Ring, I imagine that Midir’s invisible crystal spear would’ve worked like the lightning spears/glaives of the Ancient Dragons.
I forgot all about Midir's Spear. I'm glad to see they managed to get the concept of dragons wielding weapons working to their liking in Elden Ring as it definitely an image motiff I didn't realize I would enjoy as much as I do.

Aside from the fact that everywhere we fight them is way too small
I think they're rotten or diseased minor erdtree avatars.
The one in the Haligtree made me want to blow my brains out
DaS3: No no, this is way too small an arena. We don't really have time to redo this, we'll just have to use a different boss
Elden Ring: Fuck it, just ship it
Putrid Tree Spirit... urrrrggghhhh.
So you're saying even an open outdoor area is too small for them.
"With one of the most impressive grab attacks From has ever made..."
Meanwhile the boss clips 90% of its body in the wall because the arena is a quarter of the size it should be lmao
I just close my eyes during these battles... The camera's not helping me anyways! Just R1/R2 our way to victory!

I've noticed how often channels dedicated to Fromsoft games use Zelda music in their videos and how well it seems to fit them too, you wouldn't expect the cartoony aesthetic of the Zelda games to have so much music that suits the gritty dark Fromsoft games.
Honestly Zelda games have always done amazing things with their music. Every song might not be perfect but a lot of them perfectly evoke a mood.
The director of the series has said he was inspired by the Zelda series so it's less of a coincidence than you might think. :)
Less spooky more totoro
Orcarina of Time had dark gritty bits. Hyrule fields at night and the Shadow Temple are good examples.
Dark Souls is basically adult Zelda tbf. That was the exact impression I got playing Demon Souls first time. It felt like the true sequal to OoT/MM.
Lowkey why I love that fromsoft Reuses assets, you get to see the evolution of the assets over several games. Also cuts down on time needed so they can focus on the world building.
It's very similar thematically to the Curse-Rotted Greatwood, so I could see it being scrapped or altered in development. It's a shame, too. DSIII could have broken the mold by creating an actually good giant boss. At least they got their chance in the DLC.
I was about to type Midir until that last sentence lmao.
I'm also just now realizing how similar Curse-Rotted Greatwood is to the Walking Mausoleums
giant bosses were only ever good in sekiro, for some reason from learned how to make them fit on the screen for one game and then forgot it again for Elden ring

Seeing all this unused stuff from From’s older games I always look forward to possibly seeing them in future games, seeing some of these look really cool it be nice to be officially brought to the light of day
The idea that From could almost give us a 'bonus game' with very little development time, thanks to them keeping unfinished work, honestly excites me.
It’s great that fromsoft is using some of its old unused assets and bringing life to some unfinished ideas. This game is really the culmination of everything fromsoft has learned throughout the years from the souls games.
Minus the fact many of the open world bosses have the same exploitable issues as bosses from even demons souls, the shameless gank bosses, the reused enemies constantly within the open world. I love the game but when people say "oh its the culmination of everything they've learned" like, no it isnt.
@@dylanschmeichel2008 Yeah three step forward, two step back. That's the Fromsoftware I knew and love.
@@dylanschmeichel2008 yes it is... just because it has glitchs exploits it doesnt mean they didn't learn with old games they made. There will always going to be glitchs bugs exploits whatever you name it.
And it's pretty clever tbh. Instead of creating something completely from scratch, just use a unused model players never got to see in the first place and touch it up a bit. I'd like to imagine that there's definitely some unused content in ER that's most definitely gonna be used later in a future project.
@@dylanschmeichel2008 It is, actually. It is impossible to set 100 unique bosses with unique movesets. Neither is it possible to have unique enemies everywhere. Both of these are very minute issues, which get overshadowed by everything else done right, which is precisely why this game feels like a swan song. Honestly, it's common sense, but, people these days seem to get off by being contrarians.
Hey Zullie, just wanted to say thank you for all the amazing content over the years! Keep up the incredible work.
I love this mini boss, specially when you break his posture while doing his 2nd phase. he just stands their AFK.
That makes sense! This enemy is also very similar looking to the unexplained dead snake thing next to the fountain at the Dreg heap in DS III

This never stops being one of my favorite channels. Great job Zullie!
damn, ulcerated tree spirit is a lost Dark Souls 3 enemy? That actually makes so much sense, it fits in very well there and it does remind me of the Pus of Man enemies in how it moves.
No kidding. I don't know how up until this point I just couldn't see the resemblance between the 2 but now when I look at it, their undeniably similar.
I was just thinking about how I can never learn the moves of the Tree Spirits and it was driving me crazy trying to remember what ds3 enemy gave me the same issue.
It was the pus of man! Their weird snakeyness fries my brain and I can't predict their attacks, limited me to reaction rolling everything, compounded even more by how they both mess with your camera. Thankfully, even if I can't visually read their movements, once you get the rhythm of the fight, reaction rolling is mercifully easy.
It makes me curious on just what role the Pus of Man originally had in the story, it clearly had one being so prominent in the art, and I find it interesting the sun was bleeding black. I wonder if it had to do with hollowing or maybe the Dark Soul, we never really understood how the undead cursed worked or even it’s origins so I wonder if the Pus of Man had something to do with it. I mean, we are still unsure what exactly Gwyn did to curse all of Humanity.
Actually, thinking on it now I wonder if it tied into the Deep, we never actually figure out what happens to humanity when it leaves someone, and Human Dregs are the heaviest part of a human soul so I wonder if the pus of man is some sort of living manifestation of that evil.
@@darling9413 The "Pus of Man" was likely just corrupt humanity bursting out of the flesh. They are considered abyssal enemies in-game, and while they do fit within the themes of the Abyss, Humanity, Manus, etc., there's no real context for them existing in DS3's final release.
Even Iudex Gundyr who has Pus in his second phase was originally seen in Oceiros' boss room from early screenshots (the area with other large knights and pus enemies). It was a much more fitting location, but instead we got a slimy Bloodborne reject with an invisible baby because they couldn't figure out where to put the dragon emote.
And speaking of Bloodborne, the "deep" is just another (leftover?) Lovecraft reference that was never fleshed out either. DS3 was presented as a world of fire, ash, and deserts, but someone thought "let's turn the deserts into snow, put all the desert enemies in the catacombs, and add water themed Dark spells."
Keep in mind DS3 released only a year after Bloodborne. It was rushed out for an annual release and as a result is a very butchered project. Most of it is just fan service, so I wouldn't take it too seriously. The developers clearly didn't either.
@@OilFreeFeathers There was a plan if we look at the original art for them, sadly whatever plan they had was cut. As for the Deep, well it isn’t too out of left field for it’s existence when we consider what it is. It is quite literally a pool of water at the bedrock filled with the darkness of humanity. Again as said we never learn what happens to humanity when it leaves the body so I think the Deep can work as a good explanation for where it goes, I also find it being tied to water interesting as it would be like the polar opposite of the First Flame, which the Souls Series likes to do, creating counter balances for existing forces. Honestly I am sad it was rushed but I still enjoyed the game and the implications of the lore.
Man, they knew we've been waiting so long for it, they gave us 7 of em.
They truly are so ahead of their time.
Love the things you discover and your attitude towards all of it. Every time incredibly thoughtful and observant of tiny details. I really hope you keep this up for a long time!
It's always cool to see cut content like the tree spirits brought back in later games, and sometimes like the red wolves the content is even a decent boss fight
Another wonderful video. You’re one of only two channels I get upload notifications for because your uploads are always a highlight of my day. They’re such a great dose of information in a small bundle. I find them very relaxing thanks to your method of only using text over music and game sounds. Thank you for doing what you do.

Fire Giant is a reimagining of the Giant from the cut content in Demon's Souls.
Both are giants with a mouth in their stomach who live in the mountaintops of the giants.
Lance McDonald has a video showcasing it
It really feels like (and this may be a stretch but) with the snake soul and the alt ending in ds3 it feels like they wanted to lean harder into the alternate paths and quests in ds3. Especially seeing how much there is in elden ring! It's good to see them adapting their designs and taking risks where they previously couldn't
Since you brought in the topic about cut stuff, I have realized some similiarities between the Dragon God in Arch Dragon Peak with the Dragon Lord Placidusax.
Something else to note which isnt cut content but some similarities are both the Aldritch Faithful convenant icon and the Mohgwyn Dynasty insignia, both have a triple trident/candle stick shape logo on them.
And the Formless Mother sounds a lot like Formless Oedon from Bloodborne, complete with an obsession with blood.
@@ladyabaxa I'd go so far as to say, they're almost identicle entities. somewhat implied to literally just be an omnipresent blood dimension.
The difference only really comes in how the Mother is a freaky masochist and her cursed blood is all fiery
Makes you think all the games are connected in some way. I wouldn't be surprised if they all converged in a single game allowing you to fight as different factions, either the Hunter, the Tarnished or The Chosen Undead. Personally I would love all of bloodbornes hybrid weapons to come back.
So THAT'S why I always hated fighting these things. Exact same reason why fighting Pus of Man was so annoying to me in DS3. Glad to see Zullie continue to push out banger after banger video though!

They're bullshit. I think they would be a lot better if the hitboxes were more obvious, and some of the animations were slowed down 15%. That goes for a lot of enemies, honestly.

I just wanted to say I always appreciate the short and focused videos you make. It's really fun to get insight into the core of these games. Also the Zelda music, love it
I wonder if Fromsoft has some method of tracking all the unfinished bits that could be reused in future projects. I'd be interested to learn when during development they decided to start digging up cut content.
I’m sure they do! Being efficient with labor is the only way they could’ve ever made a game as expansive as Elden Ring.
I can (kind of) answer this. I work in game dev on a “persistent” franchise (ie one that has regular iterations). We have a database of thousands of features, of which I would say only 40% have actually made it into public versions of our games. The rest have been shelved fir various reasons (excessive development time, balance, not feasible with current tech) but they never get deleted, and, if the opportune moment arrives, we’ll resurrect a “dead” feature for reassessment and possible inclusion. For example, a feature will go into our next big update that I first pitched back in 2017. I’ll wager FromSoft have a similar system set up.
@@AlexH84 Yep yep, very similar to a visual library in animation. People would be surprised by how much shit we recycle from older animated projects and put them out in newer ones, and generaly just tweak them a bit ( like adding/removing/changing some details).
And voilà, a new asset made by scraps, and with 1/10 of the time, money and bank data needed!
@@AlexH84 I also assume people have passion projects of sorts that they bring up whenever the opportunity arises. If you design a cool boss that doesn’t get used I doubt you’ll forget about it.
Bungie does it all the time
The way From recycles cut content is very fascinating in and of itself. Are other game studios known for this? It's extremely commonplace for games to cut content, but I feel like From is unique for how much of their cut content gets saved from the chopping room floor. It kind of goes to show why the souls series can keep such a small budget while putting out such phenomenal games
Its so cool to see cut content from previous titles return into newer ones!

Hey Zullie I was wondering if you’ve seen where Latenna the albinauric is able to ride one of the wolves in Caria Manor. Any chance you could do a video covering it? I’ve seen people wonder if she maybe was a boss or got her wolf back as part of an unreleased quest line. Thanks anyway for all the incredible work you do!
It's probably just because the enemy model she uses (the albinauric archers from consecrated snowlands) can also jump on the same type of wolf (which is also found in consecrated snowlands), and they just never thought to remove that interaction.
So, in theory, Latenna should also be able to ride the big wolves you find in the consecrated snowlands, too.
@@KaptenAmurika the description of her summon says that she will ride those wolves if they are near when you summon her
The RideParam works by creating pairs of Riders and Mounts based on their character IDs. Latenna uses the same model as the wolf rider Albinaurics in the Consecrated Snowfields, so she has the correct Rider ID for the wolves. Apparently they never put a check in the AI that says the Rider and the Mount have to have the same Team Type, so her AI sees a valid RideParam pairing when the wolf gets near and can't think of any reason it's not allowed to use it.
@@ZullietheWitch i thought it was intentional given how the noble sorcerer will cower in fear of dragon enemies.

Damn, I really love these cool Eldensoulsborne evening videos, with really cool and neat trivia and very chill music.
I'm also glad they've been able to reuse one of their previous unused stuff. You just know that they've been freed of any shackles left and the whole team was able to be as creative as they wanted to be, even going back and using stuff they've worked on before but weren't able to use for various reasons. Elden Ring is a product made with great love not only from the Miyazaki himself, but every single person who added anything into the game, and it really shows. I'm really glad for them, and it is a great statement of how far From Software has come since making the decision to actually start making games rather than selling animal farm software, and I'm really glad the rest of the world has also taken notice. And they totally deserve that of course, since they're somewhat of a rare breed of developers that actually respect you back as much as you respect their games.
Love you Zullie, keep being awesome.
Any plans for covering unused/reused environmental assets? I keep seeing the undead settlement everywhere in ER and I wonder how much more ds3 there is strewn about
We know some of the cut God’s Grave area from DS3 made it into Elden Ring. Would be interesting to see that covered.
This is so cool, what a great find! Thank you so much for your work in the Souls community, it really is some of the most interesting content. I love details like this!
That animation for pontiff is dope af
Elden Ring is the perfect storm of a game. A developer with massive amounts of fresh, unused, cut content and a whole world to pour it into.
All the love and time and care that was spent on all these previously unseen creatures can finally be displayed for all to see!!
When I heard and then finally recognized the noise this thing made, I knew that this had to be it. And I'm so glad I'm not the only one who noticed. Zullie, your findings have given my brain some semblance of peace when trying to figure out some of these unused pieces of content, and I'm so glad that you make these videos.
Oh shit you're right, their roar is the same as hollows' screams of agony as the Pus Of Man bursts from their flesh.
I love your videos about this stuff. Always super interesting!!
Wow! Amazing find! As always, well done!!
Can you measure how tall the Erdtree is in meters? Ever since i saw how big it is, ive been curious as to just HOW big
Kyle Hill talks about the height of the Erdtree in his video "Can Elden Ring’s Giant Trees Exist?"
@@NetherStray I was thinking more along the line of someone like Zullie going into the game and using tools to directly measure it, as opposed to estimates
@@NetherStray it's just estimated from promotional pics, and erdtree is tilted which you can't see from the front so it's way longer than 500 meters, which the estimates claim. Also the erdtree goes very low into the ground, which isn't in the estimates. I'd say it's definitely 1km tall.
I can do it in feet :)
@@GordonFreeman24 Metres, feet, inches, furlongs whatever, I just wanna know how big it is lol
This is my FAVORITE enemy in Elden Ring. Its animations are otherworldly. It was a dead heat with the Scion, which is a technical marvel, but that grab attack and those movements, make anyone watching me fight this thing pay rapt attention. I almost don't believe it myself when I dodge this thing's attacks based on reading its fluid motions. It just feels good.
Maybe the animations would be otherworldly if it didn't clip through the walls of the arena its in 80% of the time lol
@@bevvvy1374 All my encounters have been minor erdtree fights and the one in leyndell in the open. :3
That silhouette looks more like The Old One or a version of it than Ulcerated Tree Spirit and you knew that.
in love with your videos thank you for all the effort you put into them. Your videos have really made me want to look into video game design.
One thing that bummed me out was that in the background of the leaked image you can see the snake souls tail in the horizon, indicating it would've been a MASSIVE boss to fight, I've obsessed over this thing because of it's mystery. Which is why I refuse to believe that they made this creature and then suddenly scraped it, I believe it will appear someday in one of their games, because the spirit and the snake soul are not identical in physical appearance minus the tree branch spikes. The OG design has so much potential for an amazing boss.
(Also I swear to God I've seen that thing in one of the dark souls 3 trailers)
Edit: I hope to God the original design of the tree spirit is seen in a FromSoft game someday, whether it be DLC or not, fighting a titan serpent like would make my whole year
Reminds me a lot of Shadow of the Colossus with how massive it is!
Elden Ring really is just the culmination of every unused idea From has ever had, huh?
Wow this is amazing. I really love how from never gives up on trying to deliver a certain experience to the player and designs alot of stuff they are determined to use if they can.
your videos are extremely therapeutic for me
Hey Zullie, If you can see this, would it be possible for you to take s closer look at the boss "Ansel" or at any of the other malformed star enemies in Elden ringg? I really like the design, and wish we could see it up close. Lots of love and thanks for your videos
That grab animation really is cool, Elden Ring definitely has some of From's most stylish animations
I wonder what kind of terrors they have in their folders, traps, devious mechanics and unholy creations just waiting to be unleashed in future titles
Only years of stacking content a little by little could result in this masterpiece
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I really love fighting the Ulcerated Tree Spirits and Erdtree Avatars. Once the rhythm is down it’s so satisfying to fight
How's it satisfying to beat when you already know their whole moveset? Becomes incredibly boring after the first 2 times, I don't think I've even died to erdtree avatars
@@bevvvy1374 Well like I said, unpopular opinion. Even at Haligtree I still enjoyed fighting them, but they are far from my favorite. I’d say my two favorite are Malenia and Radahn
Damn this was legit my least favourite mini boss fight in the entire game too, purely for the reason 70% of his body kept clipping through the walls and it ruined all immersion and looked stupid as fuck.
Love the content Zullie. Keep up the great work.
I love your music choices in your videos.

No
No-one cares
And as always, Zullie bringing high quality content. Love it!
I love your gamedev lore, Zullie. So interesting to see how every game in the Dark Souls series truly builds upon the one before.
Zullie, your channel is simply the best. Thank you for all you do
Im so glad this video was about the ulcerated tree spirit and also DS3 stuff which I already know about. Im so excited to beat Elden Ring in like maybe a month or two and then have a large quantity of BonfireVN, Garden of Eyes, and especially Zullie content to watch and have my mind blown by.
I think the thing that strikes me the most is that ER finally gives us an answer to the question 'Why does everything that goes hollow turn into a tree?' from DS3. Not a 1:1 answer, to be sure, but I think it reveals a bit about how FromSoft's designers think.
I love your videos, really glad u keep doing them
This is the best souls channel on all of UA-cam.
