The Technics just slightly edges out the Sony's when it comes to sound to though the xm5 have a hint of bass more. The Technics just sound expensive and the texture of instruments are perfectly layered
For me, I repear, for me, I enjoy the bass of the 1000X series but the high frequencies (I think) bother my ears a lot, can't stand them for some reason, the 1000X series sound alright but are not gentle to my ears.
@@elmaster6207I thought I might be hearing things, but what you stated is also the case for me. Especially those high frequency sounds are quite tiring and demanding which is not the case for Technics. Will possibly go with Technics then as I am looking for nice headset.
What's crazy is the price different in my country between the Technics A800 ($225 USD converted, on sale) and the XM5 right now ($425 USD), almost half the price. Is it a no-brainer to go with the Technics then? Even over the XM4s (which are around $250 USD)?
Thank you for this video. I'm dancing between these 2 headphones. I love bass, but I need clarity too so I can here the details. I'll probably roll with the Technics.
I had the WHXM4 (used ones; returned) and the Technics EAH-A800 (ANC was faulty after 1 year and 4 months of usage, got them repaired though, but the ANC was still faulty and the headphones sounded like a cheap one after the repair). There is one or maybe two no-nos for the Technics: 1. while the ANC is good (a bit less than the XM4s) but if you don't listening to music do not walk with them. The bounce when your heel touches the ground get enhanced by the ANC and you hear a bad bounce-like hit sound - with louder music it is counterable, but with quiet passages it is quite noticable. 2. they are really creaky and I don't mean what is shown in this video. It is hard to describe but sometimes when the headphones move in their hinges it sounds like plastic hits on plastic that gets transfered to the speakers - like it is missing a spacer or something in between the hinges. The thing about 2. is it seems removable/repairable/fixable. Because after the repair I didn't noticed this effect anymore even if I shaked my head like headbanging or moving around. Yet I can't even answer what was actually done for the repair. The reciept says 'changed headphone unit'. This could mean I got another unit with my cushions, box etc. Or they actually opened them, changed the unit and closed them. So 2. could be either my first unit was faulty at first place or they fixed it while they had opened them - one thing that could lead to latter is there are people who had tje same issue.
I really appreciate the amount of work that went into making this video. Top level content! For myself, I decided that I would skip this generation from Sony, mainly because of the design and a slightly less comfortable fit than the xm4, so I'm looking for alternative headphones. The Technics EAH-A800 after a 20-30 hours burn in and some eq modifications sounds freakin good, like a vinyl. Unfortunately an underrated gem, because doesn't have the mainstream Harman sound curve.
Out of the box, it is true that the Technics has a bass sound that would feel a bit anemic for a bass-head. That said, I prefer that well balanced with clear mids and highs as a baseline, because the sound profile is highly customizable if you know how to use parametric equalizers thanks to a ridiculous frequency range. I found that the Technics can handle subwoofer level frequencies smoothly while still preserving the clarity of the mid and highs, but again, you need to turn off all sound optimizations on the headphones and phone first to get a baseline, then tweak with an equalizer app. I used the paid PowerAmp player which comes with the right EQ profiles for these headphones.

Of course what's relevant for me is not necessarily relevant for someone else, but it seems that prime aspects like sound quality and comfort should perhaps be weighter stronger than most of the other points. Love the humour, spot on 🙂 I have the Sony WF1000XM4 earbuds which I've been using for well over a year now, and they are absolutely outstanding - love them, and that's why I was seriously considering the WH1000XM5 to replace my old Logitech headset - but I'll be getting the Technics, mostly because they seem to rate really highly, and I can get them at 40% off RRP due to my contacts at Panasonic - probably would have got the Technics top of the line earbuds as they also seem to be rating well, but at the time the WF1000XM4's were the highest rated earbuds and Panasonic/Technics had nothing even close to them. Really happy to see Panasonic are really pushing hard to make Technics a real challenger in the higher end area again.
Fantastic review thumbs up always enjoy them from Northern Ca greetings. The Sony's went from 40 mm drivers to 30 I believe? The redesign the lightweight improved performance I would go for the Sony. $400 though ouch. 👍💯🇺🇸
You should also ad information about fact that on sony ear cubs are not swichable and you can change them on Tecchnics, for me it is a big no no for sony.
So I have both pairs of headphones and I really have issues with both of them. I will just tell you my main issue with both of them. With the technics a800 there is a really horrible white noise when you try to use these headphones while riding in your car with the windows down it's so bad that I almost sent them back. It's very disorienting. Also when making phone calls sometimes there is this weird vibration in the ear cup that is very hard to deal with. It's weird but if it wasn't for the good microphones and also the functionality that allows you to suppress more background noise I would have sent these headphones back. As far as the Sony xm5s similar issue with noise cancellation. While the windows are down driving on the highway the noise cancellation has a shift. Also speak to chat is a piece of junk. Lastly, I've had an awful experience with the touchpad. The xm4 by comparison was much better. These headphones are definitely not worth $400. On a positive note, I do like the sound that I get from both headphones. With the 800s I think it's better when I use the equalizer. The microphones are real good for both. Personally I like the design of the technics. The Sony's look cheap

The original recording will always sound better I think, it's the raw song as the artist wants you to hear it, isn't changed by drivers or tuning of specific headphones
Well, I heard what you said and then heard the sound samples, which totally contradicted your comments. Technics became sucked out in the middle and disjointed from the bass and treble. Sony, the voices and main instruments came into focus where the Technics smeared across the soundstage. Can’t understand your comments! Sony win!
Imho sustainbility should go to the headphones with the most battery life (a800). In my mind the impact on planet is higher on fast consumable product.
Guys, suggest you include an image of an binaural mic in every of your thumb pic so more viewers will pop in. I'm sick of those reviewers (a lot of them) who only do a mic test and call it a day.
The XM5 sound amazing but their build is full of rubbish. I have broken 3 XM5 and 2 XM4 on the stem above the right earcup. Luckily I bought the insurance when I bought them on Amazon and I was refunded the amount. All the headphones broke a few months after purchase and I made sure to remove them gently with both hands when I had finished using them. I will NEVER buy another XM5 or XM4 again. I have many other headphones from 1More, Soundcore, Ear Fun, TOZO that have never broken. Last week I used the Soundcore Q20+ and mowed the lawn. I could hardly hear the lawn mower. Why spend $ 400 when I can spend $ 40 and get similar noise cancelling and audio?

Have had the A800's for a few days now - and not disappointed! Sound is well good enough for me, really, really impressive given the price point.

What's the name of last EDM/Dance music ? Where can I get it ?
Just revived the Sony xm5, they are so so so good, they are perfect for my head shape and ears. PERFECT!
Fantastic review thumbs up always enjoy them from Northern Ca greetings. The Sony's went from 40 mm drivers to 30 I believe? The redesign the lightweight improved performance I would go for the Sony. $400 though ouch. 👍💯🇺🇸
The ouch is real, Mike!
You should also ad information about fact that on sony ear cubs are not swichable and you can change them on Tecchnics, for me it is a big no no for sony.
anyone managed to compare the B&W Px7 S2 to the technics?
Mic test sentence should have ended with “test test testicle” instead 😂😂😂. Great work on the review though.
Could I request you, fine people to kindly make a presentation between Sony WH1000XM4 vs. Technics A800!?
Very thank you, both.
🙏
Technics hands down. Not even a question. I had the Sony's and then bought the A800. Not even in the same worlds
@@Knifes-and-Gear-Insights,
Thank You.
You did a great job on these! Love the xm5 sound! Very well balanced. I wouldn't even EQ them. Sending love with my old but still gold PXC 550.

Добрый день. Оба классные. У Сони лучше шумоподав и приложение. У Техникс очень чистый звук и крутые микрофоны. Мне больше нравится техникс.

XM5 Noise Cancelling is AWESOME !!
Great Review, Pick the technics
When testing microphone, your choice of words sound like...testicles ( popsicle and testing)
The XM6'S need to hurry up and get released already
Nura true ear bud review they will blow you away
Technics sounds closer to original, Sony is louder.
You can ignore the volume.
The Sony's look cheap
wearing headphones in a car .... thats ur problem there

BIG COMPARISON (New and old ones): * Panasonic Technics A800 (owner) vs * Sony MX4 (tested 7 days) vs * Bose QC45 (owner) vs * Panasonic RB-M700BE (owner 5x) vs * Sony MDR-XB950 (Ex-Owner) vs * Sony WHXB910N (tested) : Every headphone has its weaknesses and its strengths :
The Panasonic Technics A800 has very good sound and ANC and it's general volume and bass volume is much stronger and powerfull compared to Sony MX4 or Bose QC45. MX4 and QC45 are pretty the same in sound and ANC. QC45 has better software than MX4. The A800 software is in the level of QC45. The ANC of the Panasonic Technics A800 is much better than on Bose QC45 (And a lot of people say the QC45 has a little bit better ANC than MX4, so that means A800 has to be the best ANC on market at the moment) only exeption heavy vibrations from steps or public transportation... The Panasonic (A800 & RB-M700B) ANC has problems with that...
The ANC of the RB-M700B is worse but not that much worse than the others. When ANC is deactivated the RB-M700B has the best overall sound imo ! The RB-M700B is the onyl one you think you have a subwoofer ! That's because it has a spring vibration system (bass reaktor). To listen my favorite music (genre electronic music and techno) and war games with a lot of bassy explosions I prefer to use the Panasonic RB-M700B. I really love the bass reactor vibration system very very very much !!!! It is the only one that feels like you have a 2.1 subwoofer hifi system. On the others new on market you thnink you have a bass weak 2.0 system. Also the mids and highs are good. I have a total of 5x RB-700's to be sure i got great music hp for next 10 years. Because I live at to places i want minimum 4 head phones. So this matches nicely. I hope Panasonic will continue to offer and develop headphones with bass reactor vibration system because I can't listen to techno and electronic music on head phones without a bass reactor anymore. The Sony MDR-XB950N1 Extra Bass head phones from 2017 have a bass reactor vibration system (my first head phones i had with a bass vibration system) but the new Sony WHXB910N Extra Bass from 2021 don't has a bass vibration system anymore imo.
I use public transportation and have a very very very permanent noisy neighbor that is the reason I needed something more than the RB-M700B. I use the Bose QC45 for public transportation and the Panasonic Technics A800 for watching TV or silent video games at home when the neighbour is very loud (the A800 can better reduce noises from neighboor than the QC 45, bassy step noises and others).
Listening on the a800 all around technics
If you're a mumbler! 🤣🤣🤣 That made my day! Fantastic comparison! I've had my eyes on the Technics for a while. However, my wallet hasn't. Still saving...Cheers!
From the beginning I knew the Sony was going to get the points…I wonder why..The music sample at the end is totally ridiculous and slanted towards the Sony so much, still I’d love to see you record the sound that comes from a pair of cans.

Mic & Noise Cancelling hands down Sony definitely good for meetings
Am i the only one that found the Sony to be muddy on the samples compared to the Technics
I liked negative marking, it reminds me of JEE.
Judging based on the samples, I'd say the Technics sound better.
There’s a reason why they are not water and dust resistant.
And that is....?
Ah jongens, hoi uit Utrecht🤩
Good job on the DHRME LUCA LOL
I’d more focus in sound quality
Idk why but voice with Technics on the demos sounds painfully hissy.
Funny I prefer the original recording ! Go figure.
The original recording will always sound better I think, it's the raw song as the artist wants you to hear it, isn't changed by drivers or tuning of specific headphones
@@Alex-kx6kw well that's true in theory but our headphones still have a frequency response according to the headphones
Well, I heard what you said and then heard the sound samples, which totally contradicted your comments. Technics became sucked out in the middle and disjointed from the bass and treble. Sony, the voices and main instruments came into focus where the Technics smeared across the soundstage. Can’t understand your comments! Sony win!
Lol, OK. Sony is definitely NOT better sounding.
Am I the only one expecting to hear "test test testicle"?
i hate the muffled hi hats so thats why i choose technics
Imho sustainbility should go to the headphones with the most battery life (a800). In my mind the impact on planet is higher on fast consumable product.
f the planet
Actually on the ANC test sony seems to be much better.
Pop-pop posicle, ice-ice icicle, test-test testicle :)
The Technics sounded much clearer
its pronounced Tekniks ;)
you forgot to mention that sonys touch surface is the most broken crap ever, and it is the first thing that ngoes defective in a short while. buttons ftw.
pop pop popsticle
test test testic.....
sony's scores are far-fetched. By the sound of technics 3 heads higher. It sounds very good in a binaural test, the original and the technics sound almost the same, and sony is just terrible.
Damn... I'm a mumbler.... Technics in the post.
Technics is better
Sonys sounds fuller the technica is tinny.
What are you listening on?
@@DHRME guilty as charged. Just the speakers on my iPad mini 4. But still I can hear that Sony has better bass response. Ok the technica is “tinnier” relative to the Sony M5.
Haha you are not charged with anything! Use whatever works for you!
I know nothing about the Technics, but the Sony XM5 is not a GOOD 🎧 !! - It is, actually, WORSE than the XM4 ! - With the XM5 Sony has some-how, managed to preserve the "sound quality" of the XM4, with CHEAPER investment into the product.
I do realize that quite a few bloggers do depend on companies to send them MORE for "testing", and so many can't be 100% honest. There is also, an effect of social pressure : if 10 bloggers have declared a product as GREAT, the rest, as a herd of 🐏🐑🐏🐑, FOLLOW, even if the reality does not go "hand in hand" with the declared statement 🤷🏻♂️
Why do you pronounce vakman as fakman lol
