- I know this has been kicking around on the tube for awhile but my justification is that this is a slightly longer and better quality edit....oh,yeah,and it's one of my favourite races of all time! If in a hundred years or so when TV's are holographic chambers and there is a documentary about 20th century middle distance runners,this will be the race that gets shown for Ovett,who,at this particular moment in his life,was just awesome!

This day I’m not think any 1500m runner from any era could match ovett that day.
I am student of Ovett. Read all the books and saw it at the time. Capable of breaking the world record that day never mind when he did. Three years before anyone beat him. Just Mike Tyson in a school playground. Made world class athletes look stupid. Even as a schoolboy he took the mick out of the best we have in training. Talking and asking questions in reps. And this a guy who was 400m champ as a junior. Won half marathons for laughs. Couldn't write a talent like that as fiction. Would be thrown in a dustbin.

There was nobody like Steve Ovett at his best . His change of pace in going up a gear or two was even better than Coe’s I believe .
1977 was the year I started my subscription to Track and Field News. Great Video of the race.

Never mind how long it's been kicking around on YT - it's been around since 1977 and I get a few more grey hairs just watching Ovett monster the field. Coe had absolutely the fastest 'naked speed' [as Peter called it] on Earth, for a MD runner, but I find it hard to believe that anyone, in any era, could have lived with Ovett on nights like that. Absolutely, totally, completely outrageous.
[Big call-out to the young American Steve Scott, whose 3.47.69 4yrs later went almost unnoticed in the Coe/Ovett/Cram era, when in order to be the best in England, you had to be the best in the world.]

the "young" American getting completely trounced was only 7 months younger than Ovett.....but Ovett looked 25 when he was 18....and in terms of basic finishing speed was at his best in 77 and 78 before all the injuries..
We never saw the limit of his ability, probably due to the railings injury in 1981. If he could break the 1500m world record with 3:30.77 in 1983 when he was passed his best, he should have been able to have run 3:29 in about 1981.
This was Ovett's defining performance of his rise to prominence, even though he had many. Believe it or not, Ovett ran a 65 minute half marathon win the week before and Wessinghage and Walker knew about it so conspired to run a fast race to try and run the sting out of Ovett's finish. That's why Wessinghage did 56.48 on the first lap and Walker took over for laps 2 and 3. However, Walker's winning career was already over by this point, hence why he quit the race - he was highly embarrassed. The Algerian runner in this race is Noureddine Morceli's much older brother. Noureddine didn't rise to prominence until 1991, some 14 years later, but was inspired by his brother's performance in this race.

When was Steve's peak? The 800m in Moscow 1980?
@@stevebbuk His peak year was possibly 1981 and then he got a lot of injuries after that. For my money 1977-81 were the peak years

Despite running in an era which was dominated by Sebastian Coe (when fully fit) it should be remembered that Ovett was a brilliant runner in his own right. He was far, far more exciting to watch than a gangly, one paced Steve Cram. Shame Ovett had so many illness's along the way!

Bit harsh for a guy who ran sub 3.30 at his peak. Never saw an athlete who could go passed him on the final lap.
@@SirPeter6464 What's harsh? Cram was a great middle distance runner and personally I'd have him in the top 10 of all time. He could gradually wind up the pace from 400 metres out better than anyone with the exception of Morceli and El Guerrouj. I said Ovett was far more exciting to watch and Cram was one paced and gangly. I think those comments are accurate. He ran like a Giraffe and he didn't have that kick which both Coe and Ovett did.
@@KryptonitetoallBS Cram kicked passed Cruz in 1985 in 142.8 800m. I agree with you mostly, but on-form Cram had a kick 85/86 only
@@APBCTechnique It looks like 1985 was Cram's best season. To beat Cruz like he did and run such a fast time in an event which wasn't his favourite distance was remarkable. I'd love to be able to agree with you regarding " a kick" but having just watched the race you refer to twice, I just can't. He edged ever so slowly away from Cruz as Coleman describes" first an inch, then a foot, then Cruz settles for 2nd place"
For me a "kick" is a moment. It's clear. You know exactly when the kick began. It's not clear in this race as for me it's more of a gradual increase of pace from way out. Great runner though.
I will never forget watching this as a kid. Ovett would have beaten anyone from any era on this evening
The best we had known & arguably of his era, but if a 5k/10k runner (Mo Farah) can beat the European record while finishing well back, you have to think the Africans have taken the event to a new level

This was the race when Steve Ovett announced himself to the world. How this 21 year old destroyed such a world class field is beyond me.

Short striding 1200m then just putting the foot down for fun and walking over the line to run 3.34.4 - Ovett conceivably might have run 3.31.xx this night. Easily my favorite Ovett performance
he'd probably have run 3:10 for 1500m if he'd tried harder.

Great race. Ovetts kick was about 55s last lap. Now UA-cam Jim Ryun Dusseldorf against Bodo Tummler....he runs last 300m in 36.5 or close..bout 50.1 last 400 while only exploding at 300m...ran 3:37..about 3 sec slower but check his controlled form w no one pushing him!
Every great has their day abd Walker is among the greats...with guys like Snell before and Morcelli who was 4th in this race...yes Scott was last....it happens

what would you class the world cup as looking back,?i reckon a world championship? but it had strange rules -if so he won two.ovetts medal tally as good as matches coes and ovett was ill at l.a and ran a shocker at the first world championship where if you look at the race and time-if hed been switched on he would have won it.ovett was an enigma im starting to think the olympics can be unlucky to certain athletes due to age.i mean surely cram was worth an oly pic gold?
What an amazing kick off a fast pace. They tried to break Ovett with the fast pace but no one could compete with him that night.
and yet people still say coe(and lecture about times and splits) had the bigger kick.coe had a serious kick but nowhere near ovetts when he was at his best and when ovett went he was so far ahead without challengers that we still dont really know what he had left-i suspect quite a lot.at his best he had the extra gear coe had and then something else
What was the reason for Walker pulling up ? Genuine injury or totally defeated and demoralised ?
If my memory serves me well (?!)he said he got blocked and couldn't get out by which time Ovett had gone,so he stepped off of the track. To be fair he'd had a hell of a long season and,maybe, realised his time as the best miler in the world had just gone...

Did Ovett race Juantorena at 800m after the Montreal Olympics?
There are no recorded results for Juantorena after Montreal so it's likely he ended his season after the Games finished.

Wasnt going well enough, to finish in the first 3, may have been cramping up or felt an injury pending. Overt seemed relaxed throughout the race which resulted in a big kick. I think they went fairly quick early, 56 second first 400m. Everyone has their good and bad days. For Ovet and Walker this was the case.
Nobody would ever beat beat Jim Ryun running 3:33;1.

Please, show me the 1500 final of Moscow 1980, where Coe beated Ovett, or the 1500 final of LA 1984 - where Ovett finished 8th. I always disliked Ovett, his hateful grimace, his arrogance. I liked athletes like Walker, Coe, Boit, Bayi, Keino, etc., but NOT Steve Ovett.

Steffan Hoffmann exactly!! Steve Ovett one of the all time great middle distance runners. There was nothing remotely arrogant about him . Just a brilliant athlete whose tactical nous was second to none .
