  • A small asteroid, designated 2024 RW1, entered Earth's atmosphere above the Philippines earlier today, September 4, 2024. The asteroid, about one meter in size, was detected only a few hours before its impact by NASA's Catalina Sky Survey. While it posed no threat to Earth, it created a spectacular green fireball in the sky over Luzon Island.
Despite its brief and harmless interaction with Earth's atmosphere, many Filipinos were able to witness the event, capturing it on video as the asteroid burned up. The European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA both monitored the event closely, confirming that it was a natural but rare occurrence, being only the ninth time such an object was spotted before it reached Earth.
The asteroid's impact was overshadowed by nearby Tropical Storm Yagi, which made some observations difficult. Nevertheless, the event served as a reminder of our planet's ongoing interaction with the broader cosmos
