I have been using some of your techniques to finally actually catch stripers on my videos! I appreciate all the info you supply. Awesome video as always:-)
Awesome as usual....being that I'm close to Kerr Resovoir (Buggs island) and, even closer to SML, your videos are just what I need to get myself in the best position to catch fish...Now, I looked up this fishing reels you have there and wooooo, I guess I'm gonna have to wait til they go on sale 😂 ....thanks for all the priceless knowledge Mike...keep doing what you're doing, you're helping people
Mike, I wish I could get you in my boat to teach me the settings on the electronics. I fish Lake Allatoona in North Georgia and struggle to find schools of fish like that. I am running a Simrad Go9.
Great session as usual great video thank you for sharing I know what you mean we should all try different options as you know change this is hard for most people but you’re right absolutely right if you don’t try something else something you will get stuck and can we wonder how come we don’t catch anything thank you for sharing again👍🐟🐠🎣🐠
Awesome as usual, Mike! By far my favorite method of searching. Where you are fishing is where I went when everyone else was down at Weldon. Keep 'em tight! You need to be on Buggs in about two weeks.
been bass fishing all my life but recently, I've been finding myself wanting to go after stripers instead. I have yet attempted to troll for them as I've always used spoons to fish for them. When would you troll over using slab/spoons?
Trolling is best when scouting or when fish are very spread out. I will troll when on a lake for the first time until I find other things like isolated schools hanging in an area. If they sit still I will jig. If they move I troll. 👍👍
I also have fished for smallmouth and largemouth most of my life but once I got into hybrids and stripers nothing else matters. Well maybe not all the time. Hello to all you Kentucky & Tennessee fishermen 😎🎣
Thanks brother. It’s a rail I designed so I can move the cluster around the boat. Just drop it in the flush mount rod holders. I have a buddy making them for anyone that also wants them. You can call Joey Scruggs at +1 (434) 907-1656. I use Ce Smith rod holders on them. They are super tough and never lose adjustment. amzn.to/34LwPGD
Great video! I only fish freshwater lakes but have a hard time finding the bigger trophy fish. If you could give advice or a video on how to target bigger fish I would greatly appreciate it!
Mike when you have large schools of strippers in a lake where will the big ones be? Mixed in, towards bottom of school, etc. how can you avoid the smaller fish? Thanks for your videos!
For the most part they will be similar sizes, but not always. Sometimes it’s a matter of finding the right school. I will leave fish sometimes if they are all small, but this lake only had small fish. In summer I usually catch smaller fish trolling, but some of the biggest lake Stripers I ever caught were trolling in winter.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thank you Mike! Your name ought to be striper mike PHD. I do most of my striper fishing in Texoma and Possum Kingdom in Texas.
Sure. I used to use them a lot off the Outer Banks in winter. I don’t troll a whole lot anymore, but When I do I prefer chute/Mojo rigs and Mojo/Spoon rigs.
@@nathansackett6890 Ha! Oh I know that brother!! It killed some awesome fishing in the NSBA days. The trail zone I fished had TN in it, along with pretty much the entire East coast and over thru TN. Guys that lived in TN weren’t happy because there was hook limit and they were technically competing with guys that may never step foot in Tennessee. Because of the point system they argued that other states had an advantage so the NSBA put the same restrictions on all states. It’s not a big deal and fair is fair. HOWEVER it still sucked have to cut the hooks off all them baits. 😁😁
He is not a guide. He lives close to the lake and fishes it a lot. Shoot me an email mikesmedley9@gmail.com and I will be sure to get it to him. Thanks Ron!!
You can use the same stuff from Kayak to boat, just use less rods. The big umbrellas use 1oz baits. 9 of them. You can also troll Alabama rigs with 5 baits 1/2oz each.
Great question! They don’t behave exactly the same, but we catch them in the same places we catch Stripers. They do like to stay on main lake points longer than Stripers. They spend more time in open water versus time way back in creeks and shallow. Thanks brother!
Awesome video as usual! I'm in the process of building a few umbrella rigs and would like your opinion. I have a few 20", 4 arm that has 8 - 6" sassy shad teasers and plan on running a mojo behind it. I was going to buy a 4oz mojo and put a 9" sassy shad on it but is 4oz enough? Should I purchase a 8oz or heavier? I troll around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
I would go with a 4oz bait and add a Braille weight if you need to get deeper. If your trailer bait is too heavy it hangs a lot lower than the umbrella rig.
Since you asked, I would say the part that is “actual fishing” is the part where you put the phone down, stop watching fishing videos, “commenting negatively,” helping no one, and “actually” go where fish are. That’s a great first step…………….. I mean, since you asked. 👍.
For umbrella rigs I like 2.6 to 3.5 mph. I add no weight 150 ft out will get you at 22-25ft deep with a 9 bait Urig. If you’re pulling single 1-3oz baits leader core line is excellent. At the end of this video Steve shows his leadcore rods and how deep to get them. 👍👍
Good question. Mainly we leave it on just for the viewer to hear the fish take drag and to be able to sense the pressure put on the fish. These fish were smaller so it wasn’t really as effective in that sense, but there are actually several other reasons to leave the clickers on. If you scroll down my uploads you will see a video called WHY WE LEAVE CLICKERS ON not too far down the list. Thanks for the comment.
Hi Mike, great freaking video. questions, how fast are you trolling with your umbrella rig? how deep do you troll at? is there a specific water temp you aim for when trolling? i have struggles trolling my rig and somehow get stick on the bottom at shall depths of 15-20 ft or have had my line just snap from trolling on some strong swells. looking forward to hearing from you. great stuff all the time.
I usually troll at 2.8-3.5. I get very aggressive in fall winter and spring. I will pull up on shallow points with rigs running 25 ft deep. I throttle up to make rigs rise in 10-15 feet deep on points, regularly ticking bottom. That gets great reaction strikes. I do get snagged quite a bit, but keep a retriever on board. I use 30lb mono, the stretch never breaks off. I set drag just tight enough to not pay out when I speed up. 120-150ft out runs 20-25 ft deep depending on speed. In summer I stay more in the open water where schools are.
@@brandonyoung3132 I constantly change speed until we are consistently hooking up. I fish only afternoon/evening’s. Stripers are nocturnal so I’d rather fish going IN to their biggest activity than coming out of it.
It’s a mister 😛😛😛😛😛. Sea Pro put those in the boat without me realizing it. I thought I would NEVER use them, but I gotta admit brother. They are awesome.
