It's getting shocking how little you get for your money these days. I was in a rush and there was an Iceland nearby, so I got a couple of cheese and onion pasties - I bit into one, and it was essentially a hollow pastry with about 2 mm of filling - about 5% filling, 95% air. So I basically paid for a gob full of pastry and air.
Are you sure you didn't pick up a display model in your haste? I'm thinking like one of those non-functional plastic phones they have in Carphone Warehouse attached to a piece of string.
It's not only here though, I saw a UA-cam Video of a guy in the US who showed how to tenderise steaks, he made a video last year and it did well, so he thought he would try again this year but in a different way, he said since last year steak had nearly doubled in price and he showed the price tags from last year and this year..crazy, someone is making a lot of lot of money
Years ago, ( like about 55 to 60 years ago ), my mum bought beef and pork sausages for the Sunday fry up. They were nice. However ? Take 50% diced pork and 50% diced beef. Make a stew, casserole or curry by combining the meat and you end up with only one flavour. It’s like adding prawns to a crab and corn soup. You get the texture of the prawns, but you only get to taste the crab.
Hi Gareth! You've only just reviewed some delicious pies from a family bakery in Barrow, and now you've done this. There's no comparison. OK, agree, your channel is to review what's out there, and this just goes to prove that you are doing us a service! You have just convinced , I guess, 100% of us viewers that local bakeries (not chains, like Greggs etc) make the best pies, tastier and cheaper and the good thing is, if they have only just been baked, you can take them home and freeze them. I have completely stopped buying supermarket pies, and only buy (and freeze) locally produced pies. Cheers, BFG!
The Crestwood (Aldi) cheap pies aren't too bad at £2,29 for 4 frozen. The chicken ones in the same range are disgusting, but the steak are better, well filled, and plenty of (small) bits of meat. A couple of those with some chips is quite filling
These companies should be prosecuted for false advertising, I believe McDonalds or Burger King are being sued in the US because the actual meals are nowhere near the size shown in the adverts.
I’ve had beef pies, chicken pies, lamb pies and cheese and onion pies. Never have I had a beef and pork pie. Obviously I’ve had the traditional pork pie. In fact I’ve never seen a pork and gravy pie, but that’s probably just me. I would never combine pork and beef in anything. To me ? They are not a good combination, as I would assume the pork would take on the flavour of the beef. After Xmas I will admit I use up the leftovers into a curry and/or a stew. And again I will admit to combining beef and Gammon. I usually cook the beef first in whatever I’m making and then dice up the Gammon into chunks and add right at the end so it doesn’t take on the beef taste. Just as a suggestion, left over Gammon goes well into a Cauliflower and cheese mi, ( I also make it 50/50 with broccoli ). Another great review m8. Keep up your search for the best, and worst, foods out there at a price we can all afford 👍🏻👏👏👍🏻
I thought beef, and bacon burgers were quite common, this was a beef, and bacon pie,not much of a stretch to be honest.Bacon is a pretty strong flavour,so would add something to a beef pie.
Hi Gareth. Aldi used to be renowned for it's low cost, high quality products but that pie had way too much pastry and not enough fill..hope it's not heading downhill.. as you say, it's good but to me it's the kind of thing you might get out at Christmas when you've been on the buckfast all day and you're needing a quick tasty snack lol. Keep up the spot on work. Best wishes from Scotland.
Hi Gareth! Thank goodness it wasn't just us who were well disappointed with those pies! Had them on Saturday night, for a proper tea with all the trimmings, but we both thought they werre blinking tasteless!
Yes that's true never judge a book by it's cover which could be a good read when you get into it but never judge a picture on food packaging of the contents because it's probably crap when you get into it 👍
Yesterday for lunch I ate the Lamb and Mint version in the same range and was also disappointed. I baked the pie at the specified temperature for 25 minutes, but when I bit into it, it still wasn't really hot, so I put it in the microwave for 30 seconds to welly it up a bit. However, the pastry on the bottom was really claggy and not nice at all. The filling resembled minced lamb, not chunks. I would give the lamb and mint pie 3/10. I agree with you that these pies could be better if removed from the foil before baking, and the baking time needs to be longer than 25 minutes. Too much pastry.
There is a consumer law that goes along the lines of, '...the packaging should be such as not to cause a fool in a hurry to be deceived...' ish. I feel that there is a case to be answered here! Thanks for the heads up Gaz because I am that 'fool in a hurry, 😊. Like deployed 👍
Seems like the Highwaymen have discovered that putting "New" on the packaging, better attracts the gullible. I'm with you though, you get a much better deal at your local butchers. Great informative video as usual 😊👍
Notice Gaz, these supermarket pies now , the cheap ones are going and posh boxed ones have appeared at first they were lovely now there turning into the old cheap pies but double in price
I just don't get why they skimp so much on the seasoning, costs barely anything for a few dried herbs. I very rarely don't cook meals from scratch, even though I really can't be arsed sometimes.
I can honestly say that every meat pie I’ve ever brought is the same old story .. NOT ENOUGH FILLING ! We are always lead to believe that there is more by the photo on the packaging , ya better off buying a pie making appliance and making your own ! I Never buy supermarket pies now ! Great video Gareth 👍
So this costs 49p more, than those lovely pies you reviewed a few days ago, which were freshly baked from your local bakery...I know what I would prefer.
The last same sort of pie you reviewed was from Morrisons and that was much better with the filling I know because I had to try it for myself and if I remember correctly it was the same price. Morrisons do a steak and ale one and a chicken bacon and leek one too plus they make bigger ones if ever get the chance to try one 🙂
I love Aldi's Steak and Kidney Pie for one in shortcrust pastry. I also love their Thai Chicken curries in both the green and the red version with sticky rice, again for one. Went to two Aldi today trying to find them....nothing! I hope they haven't been discontinued already.
You can imagine how they are put together on some sort of conveyor belt with a metal funnel squirting the stuff in . maybe it does that in a random fashion :).
Could be described as a Yorkshire pudding with a spoonful of braised beef, gavy and a lid. Where's the filling? It's lining the pockets of the profiteers! Just part of the 'Pay More For Less' range of foods available everywhere now. Cheers Gareth 👍😀
Every time you go in there lately there prices keep going up .I have there Specially selected Beef and Horse radish crisp last week they jumped up to £1.25 from £1.09 . and they are very slow to replace stuff waited 6 weeks for them to get burgers in .Any way keep up the good work
I have a small Pukka chicken and mushroom pie in the fridge. One fifty in Morrisons last Friday. These supermarket pies are convenient - but nowhere near the quality or content of freshly made pies from butchers or bakers.
Always noticed about these types of pies (fresh or frozen), there is not enough gravy, or the fact the reason could be, that it gets absorbed..... 🤷🏻♂
Well Gareth that bore little resemblance to what was advertised. Sadly far too many pies are of poor quality with sub-standard ingredients. If you haven't please checkout Pieminister pies, they are more expensive but are excellent and available in all decent supermarkets. My personal favourites are the pies made by Lindsay's butcher in Perth. Expensive but packed with beef steak and delicious gravy. (I am not associated in any way with any producer or retailer)
What a shame and something of a waste of money and the traffic lights to boot. As you said the money would have been better spent at the butchers/bakers. Some of the supermarket pies leave a lot to be desired but there are odd one worth biting, its good to have a place where you can see the biting and the results 🙂.
Very early 80's having a NAAFI break I'd get a mug of tea and a Ginsters cornish pastie. The pastie was bigger than my hand and full, also quite delicious. Today very disappointing. Same with the tin pies, I forget the brand name, they were full of meat and really good. The last time I tried one, about 10 yeas ago, I was fighting through the pastry to find a bit of meat.
The pastry casing could have been half the height. It is obvious that they expect customers to buy with their eyes. If they list the ingredients as 32% meat then the remainder should be pastry and gravy. Well I saw very little gravy, so it meant that the calorific content is mainly pastry. Perhaps we will soon see on offer, pastry pie with meat. Because that is what it is. A cheap can of steak in gravy (65% meat) costs £2.50 and there would be enough to make 2 pies. Consider that 400g of meat and gravy.
I always take my pie's out of the foil about 10 minutes before the end and put them back in the air fryer upside down to cook the bottom for the last 10 minutes ...........you could try that
Great review Gaz that’s one off the problems with mass made pies the machine, that puts the filling in goes by weight and not what it looks like and thanks for sharing your experience with this products 👏👏👍👍
I tried similar some time back, the thyme sprinkles so overwhelmed the taste I couldn’t eat it. Was a shame really cause from what I did get of the taste ,it seemed really nice, and half the price of other equivalent high end pies..
To be fair, the quantity of beef (29%) is stated on the box. No surprise there. And we all have long ago got to know deep in our bones that the picture on the box is a fantasy. ;) I would think that the filling amount will be very carefully regulated. No one is going to hit the jackpot and get a 'fully loaded' specimen. No way, Jose! 😊
when I used to cook a pie , Half way through cooking , I used to turn it over and put it on a thick piece of foil ( yes sometimes it used to leak out ) but I didnt care as long as the bottom half was a bit crusty as I hated the pastry soft at the bottom. still goes down the same way lol
Years ago my mum would cook a beef casserole and then serve a separately cooked pastry lid, canteen pastry as she called it, at least you knew how much meat you got.
Hi Gareth, DOH! Just bought one of these half an hour ago, the lamb mint variety, before seeing your taste test.I hope it's better than your beef one! One top, good value pie for you to try, is the Booths supermarket, Jones's single, OR family pies in a variety of flavours - full to the top with goodness - they serve them on the hot counter too. Give it a try, next time you're in Ulverston.
Ive almost given up buying anything premade . Instead my cupboards are full of ingrediants to make our own meals, pasta sauces and curries are made from scratch..a can of tomatoes and some herbs with a onion is spot on for pasta sauce.....my fridge is full of veg and fruit i refuse to buy anything processed anymore and it is time consuming to cook but at least i know what is in the food i cook....its taught me to eat less volume of food and more quality....we have cut down on meat and only get what we need...a lot of the pies and meals pre made are full of rubbish...we are very careful about what we buy now on our limited budget...i think our food bill has definitely been reduced.
Gareth the pies you bought from the bakery a few days ago were fantastic. But this one is a shocker and hardly any meat or bacon in it. Might as well call that steak and pastry pie.
I get some chicken peices from herons , they are really hot and spicy and they are a good size , it looks ok on the cover Gareth ,yeah one to avoid wasted pastry .
Hi Gareth, It is a tight one some thing that is nice but also disappointing , that tickled me Steak Pie whats in it Pork, I'll have to try Pork steak. Good honest review, Take care
@@eadweard. Millions of hectares of rainforest are destroyed every year to grow it. Once the palms are felled, the soil is left barren and nothing else will grow on it. In Indonesia and Malaysia adult Orangutans are butchered and their young sold into the exotic pet trade. On top of that all the other flora and fauna is destroyed. It's also one of the unhealthier oils but, apart from all that, nothing's wrong with it......
It's getting shocking how little you get for your money these days. Yes price is going up filling coming down.
Are you sure you didn't pick up a display model in your haste?
I'm thinking like one of those non-functional plastic phones they have in Carphone Warehouse attached to a piece of string.
And we are getting fatter, how’s that work?
Eating too many carbs😂
It's not only here though, I saw a UA-cam Video of a guy in the US who showed how to tenderise steaks, he made a video last year and it did well, so he thought he would try again this year but in a different way, he said since last year steak had nearly doubled in price and he showed the price tags from last year and this year..crazy, someone is making a lot of lot of money
I'm so pissed off with ready made pies I learned how to make pastry. I make enough for 6 big pies freeze what I don't use no more disappointment.
Obvious cost cutting when the pastry gets thicker and the filling less! I like my my pastry but this is taking the piss!
Some ready rolled shortcrust and flaky pastry, a tin or two of canned meat, a dish and a rolling pin and you could make that for way less.
This is the problem with every supermarket pie i have ever had. No filling and no meat, just lots of sauce and stodgy pastry.
Pointless buying them
Years ago, ( like about 55 to 60 years ago ), my mum bought beef and pork sausages for the Sunday fry up. They were nice. However ? Take 50% diced pork and 50% diced beef. Bang on. Almost exactly what I commented 👍👍
You're right there Malc cheers
Aldi seemed to change their pies about 7 months ago and they seem to have gone downhill in taste and contents since then. Great review as always
Yes I'm sure they were better.
Probably thought let’s make more money so let’s reduce the cost of ingredients.
I wish YT would allow pics. I've got a photo of a supermarket sandwich labelled "Roast Beef and criminalized onion relish"!
🤣🤣
What was the crime I wonder, the price or not enough beef? 😂
Tickled me! 🤣🤣
Looks lovely but over 700 calories for a pie is just wrong. A Pukka all steak pie is around 500.
aldi all pastry lol
The Crestwood (Aldi) cheap pies aren't too bad at £2,29 for 4 frozen. The chicken ones in the same range are disgusting, but the steak are better, well filled, and plenty of (small) bits of meat. A couple of those with some chips is quite filling
Our local market in wilt's is still doing 2 pies for £1.steak.steak and onion.pepper steak..steak and kidney..good size and decent pies.😀
Excellent! If your local market and their supplier can sort out a good deal, why can't Aldi?
@@danmyers7827they can but all the big supermarkets are greedy 🤬
I tried one of those recently and was particularly impressed with the thin air topping and next to no meat on top of the gravy😉
Shocking!
They have certainly filed 2 pies with what should have gone into 1. Disgusting
These companies should be prosecuted for false advertising, I believe McDonalds or Burger King are being sued in the US because the actual meals are nowhere near the size shown in the adverts.
What so if you had giant billboard lol
@@highachiemytale6743not actual size in small print!
And barely any real meat, all fillers and processed meat scraps & fat.
careful what you wish you for because it'll just have water and air added to make it look big...
'Serving Suggestion'. One of the food industry's favourite dodges!
So, basically, it's a pastry pie: 68% pastry, 29% beef and 3% bacon with added water. Yum yum!!!
Why don't you preheat the tray with the oven.
You'll probably find the bottom cooks better.
Better with the Aberdeen Angus pie at £5.49 . Tastes much better.
Gareth the legend, eatng food so we don't have to.👍
£2.50,Jesus,prices are still going up 🙃🙃❤❤
Indeed! If things carry on like this, someone's going to be crucified for it!😃

I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole or my mouth at that price.
It doesn't pass the "barge pole/cake hole" test.

Looks ok but I wouldn't pay £2.49, id get it if was on sale 👍
Bit different to them 2 pies you reviewed a couple of days ago!!---They were Pies!!
I know, been spoilt
you’d be better with a pukka steak pie which are usually on offer for £1.20 and have more beef and more gravy than that one

Yes price going up but not the filling.
Was tempted to get me one of these for my tea earlier. But there was no way I was paying £2.49 for it.
The pork filling won't be for flavour! It's cheaper than beef.
What a lett down. Those pies you got last week were so much better. I think Aldi's are getting a bit expensive 😮
I just don't get why they skimp so much on the seasoning, costs barely anything for a few dried herbs. I very rarely don't cook meals from scratch, even though I really can't be arsed sometimes.
My wife bought me these they are blooming lovely
A good pie should have thin crispy pastry and lots of tasty filling, getting harder to find so we make our own and some with hot water pastry
Should be done under the trade description act. More a Steak and Bacon pie than a Steak and Pork pie.
I can honestly say that every meat pie I’ve ever brought is the same old story .. NOT ENOUGH FILLING ! We are always lead to believe that there is more by the photo on the packaging , ya better off buying a pie making appliance and making your own !

they have little men. very tiny men who go inside of the pie`s and spray the pastry with gravy. the deluxe pie has a piece of mince in it and gravy.

So, steak flavoured pastry pie.
Letting us know in the thumbnail before we watch, yet again Gareth.
I have a small Pukka chicken and mushroom pie in the fridge. One fifty in Morrisons last Friday.
These supermarket pies are convenient - but nowhere near the quality or content of freshly made pies from butchers or bakers.
Just had a Greggs version which is in your playlist and recommended and it was ”spot on”….Full of steak with lovely gravy 😃👍🥧

Thanks for the tip!

Thank you its a massive warning and im a big Aldi shopper but at 2.49 not a chance
You're welcome 😊

250g and 29% beef? That's less than 3oz of beef in old money, Gaz. Anyhoo, the palm oil makes it a no no for me, mate.
What's up with palm oil?
