I read a story a number of years ago: Dole was a Lieutenant with the 10th Mountain Division fighting in the Po Valley in Italy. He was severely wounded. A soldier went forward under fire and dragged him back to safety. Dole was evacuated and spent a year recovering. Fast forward 40 (I think) years and there was a reunion of the 10th Mountain Division where Senator Dole was making a speech. He recounted his tale of being wounded and saved. One of the veterans in the audience suddenly realized that it was he who had, in fact, dragged Dole to safety. The catch? All these years he thought the man's name was "Doyle", and never knew that he was responsible for saving the Senator! I KNOW I read that back when there were newspapers, but I can't prove it now. lol
