- Piano Cover: David Bowie Tribute #1 - Works from Labyrinth [1986]
What a sad week we have had with the loss of David Bowie from our lives (and others of course). Several years ago, before using my "Nord Piano" and my newest "Nord Stage 2" i had uploaded a heap of piano covers using my Yamaha MO8 that I purchased in July 2008, in Sydney. Sadly, back in 2008 I was still trying to find ways to improve my videos for UA-cam (quality) and when I look back on them now, the quality isn't as good as my newer videos are, for various reasons, mainly sound capturing and video related.
As soon as I found out about the loss of David Bowie, i was immediately inspired to do a Labyrinth Mash-Up, and had planned on "re-covering" my older Yamaha video's on the newer Nord Stage2, however.... when it came to Labyrinth I just couldn't settle on a suitable "sound".... so... I dusted off, and rearranged my current home studio setup to see what I can do with the Yamaha (again..) and this is what I came up with.
It''s been a while, but I thoroughly enjoyed this Mash-Up. Sorry, it isn't that accurate, but.. FFS, its a cover.. so it can be anything I want it to be.. Some of the tracks from Labyrinth David Bowie didn't actually sing, or they are instrumental works by Trevor Jones, but most David Bowie fans associate him to the entire soundtrack, and this is no way meant to discount the talent of Trevor Jones as without him it wouldn't be entirely possible either.

5) Chilly Down (Basic Improv as this song has "spoken" sections that can't be played.
Anyways, I just wanted to also mention that this is for my Mum (Madeline) who is a long term David Bowie mega fan, to say that she is devastated is a massive under statement and it really broke her heart hearing the sad news. I appreciate there are a lot of people out there who don't believe its possible to grieve for someone you've never met... well let me tell you, it's very much real and possible, and i guess it comes down to "how" something (especially music) can shape who you become as a person, and only a true music lover can appreciate and agree to some extent I suppose!
Please let me know what you think of this cover, keeping in mind I was up until 3am doing this.. and had minimal time to practice and revise + tired eyes! :( !.

This is fantastic, I wasnt born when the movie was made, I'm 15 but my mum used to show it to me all the time and this is so nostalgic to me. I love this, what a masterpiece.

There's something about this piano cover that just brings tears to my eyes 😭 I know this might sound strange, but you've somehow captured the essence of the Labyrinth. You've captured the magic, the strangeness, the sadness and the happiness that comes along with Sarah's journey.
I listen to this on repeat when I'm sad and it takes me back to my childhood, making me feel happy and safe again.
I would personally love to hear you cover 'Dance Magic' 'Home At Last' and 'Sarah' as well ❤ I hope you will consider this 🔮 but if not, then just thank you for this. It is such a beautiful tribute to our dearest Goblin King ❤
Thanks for comment! And appreciate the thought out into it! Yes the soundtrack for me has always had mysterious unknown vibe going on, and that’s why I love it so much. I think I can play ‘home at last’ I have to listen to it again to confirm it’s the one I am thinking of. And magic dance is tricky because the intro lyrics for example (for me ) appear to be spoken not sung but I might revisit that one too as well as Sarah. In fact this video from memory was kinda rushed in the wake of David Bowie’s passing, so maybe it’s worth revisiting a longer mash up

I know it's a year later but I'd echo this, I'd love to hear an updated version too. And I think part of the reason this one 'captures the essence' is how spot-on the synth sounds are, Labyrinth had that punchy, twinkly sound, like a cross between a piano and a music box, and you've got the same effect here. Very lovely 🥰
God I love this film so much. I remember watching it when it came out. I was 4. Now I'm 40 and I don't think I've ever gone a whole year without watching it at least once. I want a sequel so bad, but at the same time I dread one being made as there's no way they could ever do the original justice.

What a wonderful piece this is, I loved your playing of this music. Hearing this brings back so many memories from time. I only saw this movie because Bowie was in it - I had no idea what it was going to be. However, I loved the movie on it's own merits, in addition to loving Bowie's performance in it. And now... somehow I just never stopped and thought that I would one day live in a word where David Bowie wasn't here with us. He left me, (and all of us) with... SO MUCH MUSIC. So much so that, at least in my life, it will never stop playing, never stop filling my heart with just about every emotion there is... and that is exactly what music is supposed to do. Thank you David, thank you everyone who worked on the movie Labyrinth, and thank you Jackson for sharing with us your own interpretation of one work that will always be close to my heart.

This was sooooo beautiful and amazing! I love the labyrinth soundtrack. David Bowie Is soooo talented and a musical genius. He truly made this film. I've been watching this movie since I was 1 years old. My favorite song song is within in and as the world falls down. My favorite line is " I move the stars for no one". Amazing covers, you did a great job.
Thank you yes is agree , for me within you is probably my fave too however I love that track “hallucination” when she eats the peach … that saxaohone solo and the dream like vibe is just stunning … and of course my other fave is chilly down … prob my fave actually I loved it as a kid …. Just to add, I never thought I'd hear a version of Chilly Down that would give me goosebumps, that arrangement is so pretty.
It’s a hard song to play in verse because the words are spoken and slightly off key (which I guess is what makes the song so unique) but either way it’s an amazing song

Thank you so much for playing these! Amazingly beautiful in every way. As far as the 'Samples' go, are they downloadable or did you make them? I'm far off from learning to play these but....one day.
Thank you, the sounds I used were all "on board" with this Yamaha synth. I didn't download any additional tools or samples to get this sound. Most good Yamaha synths or electric pianos tend to have the DX sounding electric piano or "e. piano" sound. I think the sound I used on this was called TX802 Electric Piano or something like. TX802 is a Yamaha sound Module similar to the famous DX7.
i know i’m 4 years late haha but just wanted to say that this was incredible to watch, it’s a fantastic tribute that i hope one day manages to gain more recognition than it already has - because you obviously worked so hard on it. genuinely amazing. would love to hear you try ‘sarah’ and ‘home at last’ from the film as well!! Thanks Ethan, actually I was playing around with home at last the other day... it’s a brilliant soundtrack and so many elements of sound I’m considering another version of this mash up soon, now that I have learnt a lot more about the instruments (synths) that were used on making that soundtrack ( I asked one of the keyboardists who worked on the album) so we will see how it goes ! 🥰
