This worked even better than I expected! The previous pipes had deep grooves and heavy rust. I thought it was near permanent. But less than a minute of heat and a handful of whacks and it slid right off!
The idea of using the clamp is good - i had 2 so i put one on either side of the joint, put the car's jack between them and opened it up. Forced the pipes apart with no heat or hammering!
Always enjoy viewing your work. Much better idea than trying to cut relief slits in the pipe and risking going through and damaging the front section of the exhaust.

I’ve got a 2013 Ford Taurus that the flex pipe has a crack in I decided to tackle this myself I’m not so sure it was that smart at 60 years old and only having it up on ramps. I was able to get the four bolts on the front two flanges off. One of those threads is kind of screwed up now hoping I can still make it work. Got to the back pipe where it connects into the resonator and I killed myself trying to get that thing loose using pipe wrench to try to twist it. Then I saw your video and went to the store and bought that clamp heated it up and beat that pipe off there!! 70° right now but it’s gonna rain and temperatures are gonna drop to 28 with 20 miles hour winds in the morning. I’m attempting to get this put back together today.
Hey Bruddah, not sure if you remember me talking about weird front end chatter noise when I drove over rough road patches... Anyhow, I changed out end links and had checked out all bushings, ball joints, struts and both control arms in case they were cracked. Didn't find the problem. What I did was swap the strut cartridge left to right and right to left. The strut assy's themselves were different so i couldn't just swap the whole assembly. Swapping the cartridges was the only "rick, think outta the box" method I had left. I found that the right cartridge was leaking internally when I ran over rough roads. The noise went from the right side over to the left. I bought a new cartridge for both sides, only spent $165 total. Saved about $700 since I didn't "throw unnecessary parts" at the truck. Thanks Bruddah for all you do for us - You Rock!!

Yep, very useful video. Anyone who has tried to disassemble a decade or more old clamped exhaust system is is identifiable by the scars on their knuckles. Lol When this was required on the Mercedes I found all bolted, flanged connections with copper (I think) fasteners. Not having to fight, I looked at my scarred knuckles and was like why doesnt Ford, Dodge..? Then I realized, the expense of welded flanges that somehow dont rust out, copper alloy fasteners, a donut type gasket. Lots of pros, but I guess that adds expense, maybe in weight too. The only con: you cant make videos showing cool tricks to take apart. Did need special tool for the rubber hanger mounts to not destroy the old or new, no wiggle room. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you very much! I am trying to separate my motorcycle exhaust system. It has been very frustrating so far. The clamps are different than the u clamps. These clamps are is more like a collar over the connection and there are grooves in the connection. Now I will find a u clamp to fit and beat on that. Thanks for this, gotta do a DPF 2moro and its joined in the middle the same as this. Last time i tackled one like this, used a cut off wheel, ended up cutting through both, and then welded the inner one up, grinded it down, slotted new one over the top.
Dont have a ford but this sounds very helpful! Sadly, the slip joint i need to remove has turns on either end so its much harder. Plus i need to lift the joint off!

Realize this is very old, but helpful tip using a cutoff to make slits if you don't intend to reuse the pipe, start at the left side in this video and work toward the front edge. you can stop short and pry open with a cold chisel and hammer the rest of the way. This way if you did cut too deep and compromise the inside pipe, the new pipe is going to cover right over it. Usually if I try to undo those bolts I end up twisting the bolt right off.
Getting ready to start replacing drivers side exhaust manifold, have passenger side done, wiring and starter fixed, hopefully I can get it done with less hassle as the passenger side, 97f-1504x4,my friend at the parts store ask me if he has to pull the engine to replace his manifolds on the 4.6, I told him not if he knows how to weld,ha.

I heated, I beated... All I managed to do was separate the muffler pipe stub from the muffler. Tailpipe connection did not budge. Now I need a new muffler too.

When I was 18 yrs. old, I applied for an entry level job at an auto shop. The first job they had me perform was the removing the muffler pipe U Clamps. I ended up rounding off the nut while trying to remove it with an air rachet they provided. They fired me instantly. Now I see seasoned mechanics having the same problem, and it pisses me off knowing these pricks were setting me up for failure. 😠

Nice work...I love MAPP gas, it's the way to go...Especially for plumbing jobs. Propane is for hot dogs and hamburgers.

Those clamps may not come off after a winter or two here. Guess you can always use a new clamp. But it was a great tip!
