      Would be great. I took an intercity bus in Oct22 up to Whangarei and with the road being very twisty and turny it was pretty uncomfortable. Even if the train was even slower, I am sure it would be better on the comfort side for a start.
      Unfortunately it's been so long since there's been a regional service north of Auckland, that unlike yourself, I'd be surprised if anyone in the relevant local authorities, let alone the KR exec and this govt, even have the vision and idea to start a regional service up. It's been easily seen that for the Te Huia service, Wayne Brown and AT have been conspicuous by their ambivalence and negativity so it's doubtful if they would be supportive of a regional rail service up north.
      The best that can probably be hoped for is that GVR who are doing regular rail excursions to the Waikato and Central North island, add trips up north (I know that before the storms when the previous upgrade project was completed they were in talks with KR to do a charter). If they did and those trips were successful and showed good demand, who knows it might actually turn a light on in someone's head at KR/Local govt level, even if they started with a "weekender" service up from AKL on a Friday eve and back on a Sunday aft/eve.

    Can Woodhill Forestry use this line to get logs up north instead of trucks along SH 16? This line goes through Makarau, Taupaki, Kaipara Flats, Hoteo and more, through some bush, hills and streams, a beautiful area. I've worked around there and met some great people out there.
    What about getting Marsden Point up and running?

    With the pulp from Central North Island finishing, the PNGL needs to be extended back to Gisborne. It would make a very good infrastructure project, provide jobs over probably three or more years, and relieve SH2 of a lot of heavy trucks, for which the road is totally unsuitable. It would also feed traffic to Napier and beyond which it lost in 2012. The line Wairoa -Napier was rebuilt for log traffic, and this could resume quite quickly, as the worst damage is in the Esk Valley. It would be a major job, but would give good returns to the whole East Coast. As it is fresh produce is trucked from Gisborne to Christchurch, which could go all the way by rail if the Government makes the correct ferry choice and have rail-enabled ships.

      @@matiungawharau are there still tracks to Okaihau? There is embankment further up towards the Mangamukas but I think there were no rails on it even in the 1970s. The tracks between Moerewa and Kawakawa were taken our a few years ago to turn it into a cycle track, so maybe AFFCO is the most it could practically go, though I'm not even sure if the tracks go that far now ... maybe only Otiria at the other end of town (where the junction to Okaihau is).

    • @BruceHoult
      @BruceHoult 27 днів тому

      To answer my own question, it looks as if the Okaihau tracks now don't even exist a few hundred metres from the Otiria junction e.g. on Ngawhiu Rd near the intersection with Ngapipito Rd you can see the embankment but no tracks. It looks like they maybe still exist in both branches at Wahamiti Lane (there are two tracks) but by the new bridge on Pokapu Rd (630m from Wahamiti Lane) there is northing but remains of embankment. Apparently it was closed in November 1987, 37 years ago.
