- It's a blast from the past! (No pun intended. Probably). I'm looking back at one of our most popular videos ever to provide some new reflections, revisions, updates, and other commentary. Do I still think the Smith & Wesson Model 66 is the best revolver in the world? Did I ever really think that to begin with? Does it even matter? I was in law enforcement. I was in a gunfight and did two speed loader reloads. I lived even though I took a shotgun blast from the suspect. I did 13 rounds out of my .38 after 5 shotgun rounds first. This was back in 1980. So yes, speedloaders do work under stress. P.S. bad guy dead . I survived
And I was NRA Distinguished. Transitioned to a S&W 659 in 1986. But I shot better with the revolver

I'm retired law enforcement and my first duty gun was a S&W Model 66 in 1982. When I was working naroctics, I was also issue a S&W Model 60. In 1983, I found a S&W Model 65 with a 3" barrel. I paid $189 for it. I found it to be the perfect gun for me. Compact enough to carry it undercover, yet held 6 rounds of
.357 which made it extremely suitable to carry on raids and arrests. I still have it!

I retired in 2018 as captain of the city hall security detail in a nearby city. I carried an issued 4" S&W Model 686-6 on my duty belt with 4 speedloaders, a 2" S&W model 12-2 in my offside cargo pocket with 2 speed strips in my pocket, along with all the other stuff that we had to carry. My officers always asked why I didn't carry a Glock 22 in .40 S&W like they did. I told them if they could shoot better scores than I did at qualification that I would draw and carry a Glock. I carried a 3" Model 13-3 off-site with which I had to qualify as well. I retired still carrying my revolvers.
After dealing with big city disturbances over the past 3 years while taking my chronically ill wife to hospital appointments, I started carrying a S&W SD9 and a Makarov PM for ammo capacity and no one to watch my back. My wife passed on recently, and I pulled my older 4" S&W model 65-1 from the safe. It is now my constant companion with my even older Model 12-2 in a coat pocket. Neither have had trigger jobs but years of double action firing have resulted in butter smooth trigger pulls. I'm unlikely to need the speedloaders that I continue to carry, but I'm convinced that I'm carrying the best handguns for my purposes.

You did a great job on this video. I first got into law enforcement back in the late 70's and carried a mod 19 for 13 yrs as a primary weapon. After that i carried Smith's, Sig's Berretta's and Colts. 8 round capacity to 15. Each weapon has it's advantage. I was a state certified Firearms instructor since 2000. All of which means, "Not Much" and a cup of coffee. However I have been around guns since the 60's and have used most everything. You are right on the money. The biggest advantage with the revolver is its reliability. If you keep the forcing cone clear it will work. I am asked a lot about which gun should I get to conceal. They all want the slick auto they saw in the movies. For beginners it's always a revolver to start with. It wont save your life if you cant shoot it under stress. 1 shot and a malfunction wont help you. As the gentleman below say's "the best gun in the world is the one your comfortable with. Keep up the good work.

15:01 Jeff Cooper once quipped the only reason you carry a spare magazine is so your gun isn't unloaded while you head home.
The only reason I carry a speed strip with a snubby is so I don't have to stand around with an empty gun while I wait for the cops to show up if I have to shoot someone.

@@LuckyGunner I point this out about reloads (especially for the low capacity guns) all the time but no one else seems to think that way. Glad to see I'm not alone! Also with a semi I've found it really helps balance the weight of the gun with a mag at 9:00 and gun at 3:00, something my hurt back benefits from.
I currently have to carry a gun with 18 rounds, and I still stick my spare in my pocket before i leave. Do i expect to shoot 36 times? No, but if I need to, I dont want to be 18 rounds short.
@@jackbanks5134 I like the story about the out-of-town guy who carried a 5-shot revolver, while walking through Washington. His permit didn't cover him there. He had to brandish it 5 times to scare off perps and get to his hotel. Never fired a shot, but it saved him. Supposedly, Washington insists that ccw is unnecessary. For him, 5-shots was much more than enough, but I think that 10+ rounds (total) is prudent for civilians, particularly in places like Kansas or Baltimore.

Say what you want, folks, but I carried a 3" Model 66 the whole time I worked as an Undercover Narcotics Investigator, and refused to switch to a semi-auto when the Department re-armed. Yes, a longer barrel is more accurate at longer ranges but, I was a Cop, not a Soldier, and it would have been extremely difficult to justify shooting at a suspect who was more than 50 yards from me. I'll admit that there was never a time in my career when I needed 45 (+ -) rounds of ammo, which was the typical carry with semi's, and two extra mags, but I could easily put 18 rounds downrange in 15 seconds with my 66 and two Speedloaders. Also, I never fired less than a 96% on the range, so I felt very confident with my revolver. ( I could have had a higher score, but I always threw one shot into the silhouette's crotch in honor of child molesters.) To each his own, I guess, I usually carry an S&W M&P 9mm as my EDC now simply because it's so light and concealable, but my 66 is always within reach when I'm in the house, or out on our acreage.
L M I carried a 4 inch 66 when. Started in the mid80’s. It was odd that when I was at the academy, a large city PD had their uniform guys carry a 2 inch 66 because the plain clothes guys wanted to carry them. Idiot firearms instructors grabbed their little peep pees and said they had to carry the same gun.

There are many awesome features of revolvers. In fact, a very strong argument can be made that for a new gun owner who feels like they need some form of protection at home but they aren't going to put in any serious training time or even spend much time on maintenance, that there is nothing that beats a stainless steel revolver.
@JESUSCHRIST SUPERSTAR Jerry could carry a .22 NAA and still win any gunfight with the first shot.
@Loyal Royalty one of the kids in Columbine was shot a few times with a 9mm and lived. That's a high school kid, average size and not built or big guy. A .357 is a well known one-shot show stopper. For police that might end up in shootouts, a 9mm would be the better choice, but for self defense, usually you'd never need more than 4 shots, and I'd prefer the one shot show stopper personally. Just my opinion on it. Revolvers also have the ability to be fired inside your pocket since they don't have a slide, so that's a plus.
Like the format and like the ability of someone to go back and revisit something when their knowledge base has changed. It helps us all!

Honestly, a nice revolver is just like a nice watch or a solid pocket knife. It runs, it's reliable, it's always there, and it's just fascinating to look at.. Also, it should never leave your side. Revolvers are a working mans protection.
W.E. Fairbairn wrote that, in some 619 gunfights he was involved in with the Shanghai Police, there was not a single instance where anyone reloaded.

It's refreshing to see you revisiting older videos and updating your opinions. What most people fail to realize is that as we get older and gain more experience, our views become more fluid.
What's good and functional at one point in time may not be so further down the road.
I hope you revisit more of your past segments and offer new views and see if your opinion has changed.

I love this video. Adjusting in the face of new information is important. I bought a S&W 66 2 1/2" new in 1987 and still own it! I have thousands of rounds through it, and taught my wife to shoot using it. As a former police firearms instructor I have found, like you mentioned, that if you can competently shoot a revolver you have fewer issues with trigger control in a semi. Interestingly, when I went through the police academy in 1992, my department was one of the few left in the state that still used revolvers (S&W Model 65, 4"), and ALL the top shooters were revolvers.

I'm old cop from the 80's, carried a S+W model 10 for 20 yrs learning double action shooting from day one but cocked back the hammer for long shots(50yds)so would never cut off the hamer spur.Today I carry two S+W model 442,great video

I just want you to know I loved your video about the best revolver in the world. It was one of my favorite videos by you. It was a journey you shared and I for one enjoyed the trip.
Im a fan of Ruger simply because i bought one back in the early 70s and loved it. It was called a Police Service-Six and it had a 4 inch barrel on it with fixed sights. Its just as much gun as yours is but mine can be field serviced with either a dime or an empty casing. When i got it, it was not for EDC . I would have needed a shoulder holster if i was going to do that.
The thing i didnt like about it at the first, was the slender wood grips, so i had a pair of grips made from a piece of black walnut, and those took care of the problem. I have fairly large hands and they fit my hands a lot better than the originals. I bought a thumb break holster for it from Bianci leather in Temecula, California and i was in heaven! The new GP100 has all the features i would want already built into it. Ruger makes good guns. Mine was a .357 caliber and a great shooter! With a little practice, i could get it from my holster pretty fast, and yes it was a hand cannon! Built tougher than a Sherman Tank, it took every hot load i put through it without blinking an eye. It was very accurate and in my own opinion, one of the best guns out there! If yours didnt have a side plate on it and could be field stripped like my Ruger, youd have a really good revolver. Still do. I cant nit-pick S&W at all. They are as good as a Ruger.
My nightstand gun is a Ruger speed-six with 125 gr Hornady hollow points.Super reliable and more durable than the 66. Not as pretty ,but who cares.

As a quadriplegic and a firearms enthusiast I’ve got to chime in here with the single action method being better than not shooting at all.
@@Squatch-sj3vg gotta say I haven’t ever thought about that. I’ve seen guys in wheelchairs play murderball but they’re mostly paras so all of their upper body works. There’s a huge difference with us quads where there are no lats, abs, limited wrist and grip strength. My best option is a decent trigger and ability to see a threat far enough in advance to avoid it all together.
@@Squatch-sj3vg yes indeed. I’ve always seen the courses on sand or sandy grass and there’s lots of upping and downing. Having an indoor course set up like a shopping mall, school, or grocery store (sadly our current reality) would be a cool course in which to compete. I would use my Smith & Wesson TRR8 as it’s got a 8 round cylinder and handles full house .357 loads quite remarkably.
Good article. My choice of od carry for 10 years 77-87 was the Model 66 with 2 1/2 inch barrel. Great gun which is carried with absolute confidence. Thousand of rounds fired and never a misfire. The .357 mag is very respectable even from the short barrel.
I built a beautiful custom Model 19 when I was, ironically, 19 (40 years ago), and I still have it. It was the carbon steel version forerunner of the Model 66, and oh, DAMN this is one fine weapon! Same three-inch barrel, too. I sculpted and polished the wide target trigger, bobbed the hammer and sculpted it into what I call a "Bird's Head" hammer, nice and smooth with nothing to grab on the draw, and I "melted" the edges of the thumb catch. It's double-action only, due to the bobbed hammer, and it stages so nicely you'd never miss single-action at all. I just now went to the vault to pet it again. "Nice kitty... Sweet kitty... Daddy LOVE kitty! Kitty love daddy? Of course you do..."

I have a model 686 that I’ve owned since the 80s and I think it is the best revolver made. If I owned a model 66 instead, I’m sure I would feel the same way about it. Maybe we can just agree that S&W makes a damn fine revolver.
Own both, love them both. I would never sell either of them…great revolvers.
My grandfather and father made me learn to shoot double action. This has help me shoot any weapon better no matter how good or bad the trigger is . I’m 62 and carry a Hellcat so I don’t hate plastic. The Marines taught me to shoot what I can find and have ammo for so it comes in handy.
I owned several S&W model 66's over the decades including the 2.5", 4" and 6" model and loved them and they were fantastic. I also owned a 4" model 19, which of course is the exact same weapon constructed of carbon steel. I owned lots of K-frame S&W's over the years (model 10, 13, 15, 65, 66, 67). In the 80's I had my own FFL, which afforded me the ability to purchase firearms cheaply and back then I owned a lot of handguns I would have never been able to otherwise. I was always at the range and thoroughly enjoyed them.
Years ago my favorite revolver was a Smith & Wesson Model 66. I carried it, daily for years, The only problem we had ,with them, was full power 357 ammo was to hot for them and cut a channel near the forcing cone so we carried 38 Plus P to eliminate this problem. We then we transitioned to a Sig Sauer semi auto and revolvers passed into history, at least for me, Lately I have a revived interest in carrying a revolver. I decided to purchase a revolver and I looked first at the Smith & Wesson. I was not aware and i was shocked at the internal lock Smith & Wesson has placed on their revolvers. The gun shop owner called the lock a Hillary Hole. What ever you want to call it I don't like it at all. I purchased a Colt Revolver. I never had a hammer snag problem since i usually carried the revolver in a holster. We trained double action for close in shooting. We trained single action for distances out to 50 yards. I find the capability for both single and double action is of value in a revolver.
I dislike hammerless myself. I always cock the hammer as I draw. If rapid fire I DA the last 5 rds.

Bullets hitting point of aim is more better. Only bullets that strike the target actually meet the requirement. Up to you how many you choose to carry. As an armed civilian for defense...often I think I'm just fine with 6 shots of 357 for hiking or 38 +P generally...one maybe two to anchor...times 3!
Being able to hit accurately, at speed, is better than haveing a hi-cap bullet hose.

Haveing more ammo on hand might be nice?
But haveing a gun that will put those rounds effectively on target AND those rounds being of an effective caliber/construction, is far more important.

I understand where you are coming from but I’m pretty comfortable with my heritage arms single action 22lr... and that’s a long way from being the best gun. I say this only to say don’t limit yourself by only being “comfortable” with a sub-par gun

I have shot the 66/4inch since I first bought it in 1973. It is awesome. So good, I matched it with a Henry lever action in 38/357. Makes a very solid defensive pair. Never changed Jack shit. Target everything and green ramp front, white outline rear sights. Just a beast!

I'm new to pistols and have been watching many videos to learn what I can. Did watch your Best Revolver In The World video and took it as you meant it at the time. But appreciate the update with your newer opinions and insights.
I like your reviews and commentaries. I'm 70 years old and started shooting when I was 5. My opinion is that to really be a competent firearm owner and shooter you have to become familiar with all types of firearms; handguns, rifles, and shotguns. You'll end up with personal favorites, we all do, but there's less likelihood that you'll become a gun snob.
You'll also realize that when it comes to shooting, ammo capacity and caliber are less important than accuracy. No matter how many bullets you might have and how big they may be your first shot is still the most important, and sometimes the only one you get.
I have and shoot both auto loader and revolver handguns. My favorite carry revolver is a K frame 38spl police trade in S&W model 10-10 with a +P barrel. My favorite carry auto loader is a 45acp police trade in S&W 4566. Both are SA/DA.
Two of my favorite handguns for the range and house are my 9mm Ruger P89DC and 45acp 1917 Colt service revolver. Again both are SA/DA.
One of my all time favorite handguns though is a 22 caliber S&W field model 422 that I bought new when they came out in the 80s. It holds 12 rounds of 22lr and I can place all 12 rounds in a chest size group at 20 yards in about 2 seconds. The closer the target the smaller the group.
The buffering got me good 😂
I love my model 19 made in 1969 nickle 4 inch barrel still looks new and shoots great!
I have a Colt King Cobra that double action is very smooth and light compared to revolvers of old. Shooting double action with that gun is a joy, I wish some of the other makers would follow suit and make their triggers as nice.

Smith 586 4 inch barrel owner along with a Glock 27.....I can't hit the side of a barn with the Glock 😂😂😂😂 now the revolver that thing is accurate with .38s and .357 the trigger heavy but will get better the more rounds I put thru it 150 rds so far

The damn lawyers is what keeps smith from bringing back the original 19 and 66. They did however surprise the world with the 640 Pro Series, no lock on the 640-1 frame. The best back up revolver on the market today.

Well, I love my .275" 66-8. I upgraded the sights to Dawson/Bowen Tactical, put a spur-less Apex hammer in, and spent some time stoning the internals. It's a great build, and I have carried it especially while camping in Bear/Cat country.

I was fortunate enough to shoot a friends' 2-1/2" model 19, and found it no more difficult to shoot than my 4" model 66.
Gosh, what was your primary weapon? I carried a 66 2 1/2 as my primary for over a decade. It's a heavy gun.
buck shot it had to be a Bazooka. Just kidding I primary carry a 19-8 2.5 inch set up very similar to the 66 in the video during winter and some summer months when I feel fancy. But I agree it’s not a light gun I’d back up carry that’s why god and smith and Wesson made scandium J framed

I love my model 19. It's an early 90s model, passed down from my dad. I've never tried the stainless steel version (66) but I truly believe this is one of the finest revolvers ever made. Dead accurate, great sights, smooth trigger, sturdy...darn near perfect, in my opinion.

I carry a spare magazine on my EDC autoloader not because I think I'll need more rounds, but because the magazine is probably the most common cause of a malfunction in the autoloaders I carry. It's more of a mitigation to the more probable stoppage than full mag dump.
Otherwise I really agree with what he's got to say about reloads and capacity.
The S&W 360, 357, 3 inch barrel is one of my favorites. I carry it while hiking in the woods loaded with Underwood ammo.
I intend to buy a S&W 686 Plus, 7 round , 357, 5 inch barrel, if I can ever find one. Barrel length in 357 mags, 41mags and 44 mags can really make a difference in power increase in those calibers. I like Ruger and Colt revolvers also and have own several of them

I have owned and occasionally carried a model 66 s&w since 1974. It’s a fine weapon, period. Now I can back up the system with a Henry big boy that is also chambered in 38/357. It’s a good combination up close and distance.

My wife and daughter have trouble racking a semi, I had them go with the revolver and that is the ticket.

My wife and daughter also struggle with the slides on most firearms. They love revolvers, but I find them shooting in single action 100% of the time. I purchased a Shield EZ in .380 and it became their favorite firearm. They load the mags, rack the slide and shoot outstanding with it.

Great video on a great gun. I'm old school, and I love a wheelgun. My Model 66 was purchased new in 1980, only change from the original "out of box" is some rubber grips. Just fits my hand so well; and gotta admit I just love the term "combat magnum".
Smith & Wesson K frames feel the best in my hands of any revolver. Often carry a model 65. But there are a lot of good choices out there. The best one, is the one that works best for you.

Model 65-1 local police trade in revolver was my second wheel gun and my preferred revolver carry. 4 inch bull barrel, scratched all to hell from decades in an officer's holster, still a beauty. 🇺🇸

I’d feel very well armed with the Model 66, Ruger Security 6, and a Ruger GP100. Those would be my top 3. Colt Python my honorable mention.
I'm a big fan of the over-engineered security 6 I like your choices Security Six in 357 Magnum 4 or 6 inch barrel either one will do in a pinch

Just so happens my four inch M66 is my favorite revolver too. You’re right about shooting double action. I was involved in three on duty shootings w/my issued .38, all double action and all very fast paced. Also, you’re now aware of two cases of reloading a revolver, under fire w/a speedloader. I did it in a 1974 gunfight w/three armed robbery suspects. Mas Ayoob published an article about the event in a 2016 edition of American Handgunner.

@@flaco5581 Yes, b/c I ran out of ammo after 12 rounds & the suspect was advancing on another officer. It was dark and I was able to come up on his blind side very quickly to put him down.

@@FCV0511 I responded as backup to two other officers who were trying to stop armed robbery suspects on a small parking lot in 1974. When I pulled onto the lot I saw one officer go down and the suspect was driving his car right at me. I floored my cruiser, hit him head on and bailed out shooting through his windshield. He came out through the passenger door low crawling toward a third cop, shooting at me and the other officer. I emptied my issued Colt DS (I was a detective assigned to the robbery squad) a second time and was out of ammo. The suspect continued to advance on the third officer, who was not shooting back b/c he was trying to reload from his dump pouch. It gave me a brief window to come up on the suspect’s blind side and put him down w/a blackjack, fight over. The officer who was shot recovered, we killed one suspect, wounded one other and the third surrendered on the scene. All this happened during city rush hour. A HS teacher was slightly wounded when one of the suspects shot him accidently.

I have a ruger sp101. By far my favorite carry piece. I shoot 125 grain 357mags in it. Houge after market grip.

Casey F Ryback, I have a little LCR38 that I stuff in my pocket if I’m in a hurry. And I have a few semi autos... but believe it or not. My favorite semi auto to carry is my taurus g2c lol. Even over my m&p and my Glock. Go figure right right 🤷♂️

I’ve got a sweet spot for a fine revolver, but usually carry a semi-auto.
When I retired as a Police Sergeant, I gave my daughter my model 66, since she was a sergeant of police as well. Never heard a complaint from her. Or another word. Retired, I now can make it to my mailbox and back with a Smith snub.

I am not about to say you are wrong about the 66. However, MY favorite is my 3" model 13. SO packable and yet just heavy enough to be controllable. Nice video and credible points! Carry what you are comfy with and can use well. BTW, I have retired my 13 and had it engraved and presentation blued. It is my barbeque gun now. Beautiful!!!!

I use a double action revolver but not having a hammer at all is just ridiculous. If I ever find myself in a situation where I need to defend myself I would just pull the trigger, however, when I am shooting for fun at the range I cock the hammer back most of the time, and would do the same if I had to hit something accurately more than 40 yards away. And hey, just wear a leather glove on your left hand, squeeze the trigger, and open palm the hammer 😂

I used to carry a 3" J frame, 5 shot, 38 Spcl. with 2 loose speed loaders and a speed strip. Love the three inch size. Long enough to generate power, short enough to conceal. My K Frame was a full size four inch for outdoor, open carry. Mine still had their hammer spurs, but I only shot double action.
I've had the model 64 combat magnum for 40 years and i think its the best. Rear site cut into frame and not sticking up. Smooth action.
In the 80's I carried a Model 66 with a 4" barrel as a duty weapon as a Deputy. It is a wonderful revolver, and fit my hand perfectly after I changed grips to Pachmayr Professional. After I learned to shoot double action I would never go back, if anything I feel I can shoot double action more accurately, and I shot a K frame in the Master Class in PPC competition. I also like the Safariland Comp II speedloaders for both carry and competition.
Just bought a .38 special revolver for pocket carry. Part of my carry rotation with my Shields, Glock and Sig's. Just another option and options are good.

Ok, I know I'll be burned at the stake for this but ... I'd love a similar series about the 1911 that recognizes its shortcomings but tries to get a medium-tier gun (Springfield, Colt) to be as competitive as it can be as a defensive gun in the modern age. My biggest motivation* for seeing something like this is because like it or not, it's still a popular handgun and a lot of people just don't know where to start to find accessible and easily digestible content on how to run one successfully.

God I would kill for this. I don't carry a 1911 but I wish there was more options to carry. In my mind your first 9-10 shots matter more than your last 5. If you hit better with one then carry one. But yeah I'd love to see one

There is nothing wrong with a 1911 as a carry gun. Besides the weight it is just as relevant and can be as reliable as a glock. I have a Springfield milspec that’s well over 20 years old and is as reliable as any of my glocks. I rarely Cary it because of the weight, but I trust it as much as any of my other semiautomatics
As much as I'd love to see such a video, as well, people would descend on Lucky Gunner with torches and pitchforks if they were to criticize the 1911 like that. Make no mistake: it's a work of genius, looks nice, and makes a great target gun. However, the fact that it was one of the best handguns, if not the best, of its era is only due to the indisputable fact that all handguns back then had all the same drawbacks and design defects that the 1911 *still* has.
Further, such a video will have to address the elephant in the room, when it comes to use of a 1911 as a modern defensive arm: that fail lever, and a carrier's reliance on it (unless they're doing Massad draw, which has its own problems). People will whine and bitch about how "awful" the trigger would become if the design were adapted to a double-action trigger system. People will still get offended when told that carrying cocked and locked without large amounts of practice thumbing that safety off on the draw is an excellent way to fail to defend yourself.
Most of the rest of the drawbacks of the 1911 come from the feed angle of the magazine being designed with the intention of using the bullet's nose as a camming surface, and thus not really working that well if that nose isn't round.
I have a model 65 I purchased from a police officer in 1975' Already had an action, trigger, and grips replaced. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Love the spurred hammer, but have thought about replacing it more than once. Great video.
I have model 66 snubby. Had a competition trigger and 6 ports installed. Shoots like dream.
Ruger is my favorite, I have 3 Ruger .357 wheel guns and love all of them.
SP101 RUGER is hard to beat, I have two. I ALSO own a COLT PYTHON which is DAMN HARD TO BEAT.(357'S) AS IS a RUGER 3.5", 45 COLT TALO Vaquero.....BUT I carry a LWT COLT COMMANDER (ENHANCED) 45 ACP as EDC.
Ruger LCR revolver is best concealed carry
I have a Ruger LCRx .327 Magnum and I love it, also love being able to shoot single action in a pinch.
