Hi folks. This video might be a bit of a jargon overload so for anyone wanting to skip through to different sound samples and sections the time stamps are below. Cheers, Joe! 00:00 What is the Kemper Kone? 02:54 Our reference profile for the video 04:11 Direct output reference tone sample 05:08 Using the Kemper Kone as a full range speaker 06:09 Kemper Kone function engaged 08:45 Engaging the 'Monitor Cab Off' button to enable the Kemper Kone speaker impressions 12:54 Summary... 15:23 Audio flicking between the direct output and the mic'd up Kemper Kone in M Greenback mode
@Zilla Cabs . Thanks for the very informative video and great playing! So, basically if you get a KK speaker and update your firmware on you Kemper, a few things can happen. The KK speaker can just be used as a traditional speaker, voiced as their curved tone without telling your profiler to do anything other than use it as a speaker, there is no processing "handshake" it just sounds the way it sounds. Or you can tell your profiler to use the KK as a selected choice for the profiler in that the profiler will recognize this as a KK and then the sound coming out of it profiled to their eq'd spec. And finally, under the KK profile you can then rotary dial the KK into another parameter to model different IR's such as V30, 25wattGB, 1x10", etc? etc, so the speaker is essentially "usable" as a flex speaker? Please correct me, this is new to me, I currently use a Digidesign ElevenRack and love it but you get what you get for amps and speakers..Thanks!
Thanks for the video! I think generally speaking it is not recommended to close mic a kone-type speaker. Try setting it further back next time. It might pick up a better representation of the sound in the recording.
Hi Daniel, thanks for the input. We did actually play around with micing a lot, I'm not a big fan of micing a speaker like this, or the X200, but in all honesty I found Joe made it sound better than it did in the room, to me anyway. It was a compromise between giving a true representation and making it sound useable, and considering it would never normally be mic'ed up we went for making it sound useable, if that makes sense.
I have many amps and cab/speakers. I can’t play them all live or home (due to volume) I used the Kemper for both. Can not fault it at all. Performance mode is a god send. Celestion IRs are great, when dialled you can get a fairly accurate reproduction. The Kemper Kone is on another level. It does not come across 100% on the video as it is hard to record the room sound with colouring. It is that good I have put all but 3 apps and 2 guitar cabs away. Even they are not getting used. The next stage is to get another Kone for stereo live. Well done on the videos. At least it is just a direct replacement so I may need a Zilla if I decide on a larger Cab for Kones. Do still use one amp every so often. The Laney La30bl. Just a superb sound. You can do so much with that amp.
The directivity option in output menu has a huge effect when using the imprints of different speakers. I wish you would have experimented with that a bit.
HinJohn, it was just a quick video, I let Joe loose on that one as he has used a Kemper extensively (live and in the studio) over the last few years. I will see what he says about that.
@@ZillaCabs I'd be interest in another video now that you've had more time to play with the kone. I'm quite interested in building one of your cabs with the kone.
Sounds like a great analysis. I use my kemper to profile the tones I like connected to my Zilla. I get close to the real deal into my Zilla and my IEM has my zilla IRs and I'm basically laughing. I don't think the kemper kone is for me either.
If you want just a combo, you’re missing the point of the kemper. In one show, I can change entire amp/speaker setups with one button. For a lot of people that’s a huge deal. For me, my ideal clean tone and ideal gain tone use completely different setups - I don’t want to take 2 or 3 amps out live, and I want the option to go direct and to front of house if and when I need it without any fuss
@@adamsteelproducer I dont think you watched the video or read what I said. I like kemper DI out best. And if you want that 'feel' of playing through a cab, as the video said, it falls short... and in that case I think you should consider a real amp. And I still think that and not missing the point of the kemper or its rivals at all...
@@seanrosedotcom why not just a real cab? Kemper without the ir into a guitar cab will give you the "amp in the room" feel without loosing the versatility @Hop Pole Studios was talking about.
Hi Zilla! I just bought a Zilla Kemper Shell and I am fond of it. It looks and feels great. Now I am considering buying a Zilla Cab with a "traditional" speaker (no frfr). Do you have any recommendations for the type of speaker to choose? I loved the Swamp Thang in my blues Junior. Thank you in advance for your help.
Great video Joe. I much prefer the Redback tbh in my Zilla 1x12 fatbaby cab you made me as the kemper sounds fantastic with it and can eq with big effect. Plus sounds amazing with cab sim off for the metal chugs a all rounder do you agree Joe ? Get video and great for people who like that flat response thing.
IMHO the Celestion F12-X200 12" 200-Watt is a better sounding speaker for the Kemper as well as many other modeling heads. I use a AmpliFIRE 12 running into a Trademark 120 in the effects loop return. 120 watts into two of the Celestion F12-X200 12" 200-Watters and the IR's sound is phenomenal!! Again IMHO. The omhs play a role for me as well. I need 8-16oms. The Kone is only 4ohm if I remember. I may need to check on that. And Yes, I have heard both and the Celestion F12-X200 is the best way ta go and Matt (the one with the kone's) likes the Celestion F12-X200 better as well. His comments were, "mush louder, more defined and touch-sensitive as well". So I guess you all get two IMHO's lol.
Hi Shawn. Thanks for watching. We talked to Kemper and although we did work something out I think it is best for customers to source the speakers from Kemper direct and have them sent to us. That way the warranty still stands.

haha in fairness those speakers aren't really supposed to be mic'ed up, it's not how they would be used. I still prefer a traditional cab too.... I like your no beating around the bush approach ;)

Right on. Thanks for the solid review.

Enjoyed the video and agree. I prefer the DI out... and if you want a cab/the real thing, why not just take a combo amp and be done?

It's good hearing from you Ian. I know what you mean there, we're still going to keep testing the Kone though to see where we can go with it.

Hi, did you have to eq your f12-x200 a lot? I tried it in different cabinets and I found it very bass heavy...I tried it with my Helix stomp.
Running any modeler or Kemper into the return of any tube amp always sounds awesome.
Any chance Zilla will be offering the Kemper Kone as an option in loaded cabinets?
Hi Shawn. Thanks for watching. We talked to Kemper and although we did work something out I think it is best for customers to source the speakers from Kemper direct and have them sent to us. That way the warranty still stands.
Do you sell powered cabs with the Kemper Kone already installed?
Don't forget that some breakin my make the difference.
It is true some speakers will soften a little with playing time but for me it was a little more than this.
When you change the imprint what happened to the profile Ir ?
Well...I have tried both the Kone and the F12-200X with the Kemper - Winner: F12-200X.
Whats that V in the corner?
That is Joe's Daemoness V... it has a long scale neck, apparently 666mm
