My name is Julia and I'm a concept artist & character designer working (mainly) in animation. I had the absolute privilege of taking some time off and solo traveling earlier this fall and, of course, I took my sketchbook! It's incredible how many stories unfold when you can take a moment to observe them. I hope you enjoy this chatty sketchbook tour!!

I'm 63, retired, and live in Oregon. I love your sketchbook tour. I use mine for documenting my life about my travels, camping, plein air, urban sketching, food, things, people, and landscapes. I work with watercolors, ink, Caran d'Ache Neocolor ll, and soft pastels.
My first sketchbook was of me practicing drawing. After finishing a couple books my grandkids always wanted to see them when they came to visit. It was then that I realized that they are going to fight over who got to keep G-ma's sketchbooks after I was gone. It was then that I decided to fill my sketchbooks up with as many experiences I have had. From nature sketches, to places we camped (so they could explore those areas too when they were adults), political stuff, covid stuff, environmental stuff, people (including sketches of them), etc. Basically these books are my visual diaries. I wish I had ancestors who left me their sketchbooks. The insights of their lives. I would have loved that.
One of these days I will share mine here on UA-cam. Meanwhile, I've subscribed to your channel.

I'm really impressed at the sheer quantity of observational sketches in here. I always feel weird drawing people in public, but I want to learn to do better.
I feel the same way because I'm very shy, but I always think it's so cool when I see someone drawing in public ✨

ty! I generally don't use pencil, I like how marker and pen sketches force me to be fast and confident with my lines ~

What does it mean to render?
It's a bit of a broad term but it's when you finalize a piece by adding lighting and shadow to make it look more realistic/3d ~
