marningritaguy Who knows enough really? There were some experiments done in England in the mid-sixties. Women dying of Breast Cancer were given LSD. The general response was a lessening of fear, anxiety and depression. These volunteers had never done drugs before their diagnosis. Many stated they more at peace with the inevitable. According to those running the experiment the easing of suffering appeared to last about six months. More investigation will be done with hallucinogenic. Little is understood about it as it has been classified a class A drug. With the decriminalization of marijuana many new uses are being found that are helpful. THE 60'S !! you had to just be there. new and amazing bands coming out about once a month. there will never be anything like it in music again. i'd say i'm glad to be old but i'd be lying.
Another song done by this group, that I used as a " 12 step recovery song." In the 90s was: " Its Never To Late." John Kay's grating , rough gravelly sounding voice complimented the music around him produced by this band, perfectly.
Man oh man. I am one happy camper tonite listening g to your choices. All my teen years. Amazing talented people. I am still stuck in this era happily. Keep up the great music. .😅🎵🎧💿💘 very long song. Rare back then. But so worth it. .
Me & a friend got to see him in our little home town, believe it or not! There’s a flea market with a stage that was sit up for music groups, this was back in the 70’s . Mitch Rider & his band also played that summer at the same time Stephenwolf was there! What a AWESOME time that was!!!
I saw these guys at the Fillmore East in New York City in 1969. It was fantastic . One guy was up and danced through that solo, which they played for a looong time . Those were great shows at that place (and time) !
Lots of '60s music is mesmerizing because we listened to them stoned. They were made specifically with that in mind by a lot of bands since they were also stoned. It's a characteristic of a lot of these songs as well as organ music for some reason.
With the start-from-nothing intro that sounds almost like a sound test, then the sudden slam of the instruments coming in with the intro lyric of "I like to dream", this sounds like it was made specificaly to be the opening song of a show.
Intended to replicate the feeling of a psychedelic trip. Great song and my favorite by this group. I'll bet that jam went on a lot longer too when they performed live. Talk about taking you awayyyyyy. Thanks for featuring this song.
This is their musical interpretation of what taking a tab of Owsley's acid was like in 1967. He was the sound engineer/man of the west coast rock scene. Owsley Stanley is the guy Steely Dan is talking about in the song Kid Charlemagne and the chemist that brewed the LSD of Height Ashbury fame
Another song from 1968. Just like Born to Be Wild, brings back memories of being a 12 year old kid and enjoying the summer. Light years away from what we have today. That's why we baby boomers long for the good old days. Sure it wasn't perfect, but it was way better than what kids have to put up with today...and the music was so much better.

American, where are you now ? Don't you care about your sons and daughters? Don't you know? We need you now... We can't fight alone against the Monster...
That is Goldy McJohn on keyboard. Classically trained and from Canada, he had been a band with future funk lord Rick James. John Kay was interesting that as the primary song writer and front man, he built a band in Steppenwolf that depended on McJohn's chops to really stand out.
Steppenwolf loved utilizing a rotating speaker called a Leslie that made the sound from the instrument quiver and fade in and out. It's one of my favorite instrument modifications in rock music, right up their with a fuzz box. Two songs that prominently feature the Leslie are "Dear Diary" by the Moody Blues, and "All I Wanna Do" by the Beach Boys. Both of these songs are slow tempo and have the Leslie speaker hooked up to the microphone to distort the vocals, rather than the instruments. Both songs are great - worth checking out!
You also want to check out Rock Me, It's Never Too Late, The Pusher, Snowblind Friend, For Ladies Only, Monster, Hey Lawdy Mama, a lesser-known song called Chicken Wolf, and many others. Note: the band was originally from Canada (Toronto), but lead singer John Kay and bassist Nick St. Nicholas were originally from Germany.
Steppenwolfs "The Pusher" is a great one and just as relevant today as it was in the late 60's. It was written by Hoyt Axton, a prolific songwriter who also wrote Three Dog Nights "Joy To The World".......a far cry from "The Pusher".
I remember when I first heard this song I had to have the 45. So I went out and bought the 45 with my allowance money, and played the record over and over again. I love the sound of the vacuum cleaner at the beginning.
I remember listening to Steppenwolf for the first time and it hit me like a Mack Truck. There was nothing like 'em in the 1960s, and their new sounds were a forerunner to hard rock and heavy metal. So glad they have been nominated by The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame before and that one of their singles was inducted, but they really need to be in as a pioneer of hard rock!
Yep, that's an organ. Specifically, it's the Hammond B3 electromechanical "tonewheeel" organ paired with a Leslie rotating speaker, which was a staple of rock music back then, especially in the "prog-rock" and "psychedelic" genres.
