Insects really don't like low teemperatures. One time I was moving from a city apartment to a house, but I knew there were cockroaches hiding inside some of the furniture. So I didn't unpack the truck. I left it sitting in the driveway overnight, in February about fifty miles north of NYC. No cucarachas survived.
The easiest way to kill bedbugs is to crank the central heat and bring in auxiliary heaters and get the house/apt up to 130 degrees or so for a certain time. I forget the exact numbers. A friend of a friend got bed bugs at his house so I told him "bake that place and you'll be good to go."

@3:30 I lived in the back of my pickup truck for 8 months saving up for a wedding once. I used those pads to insulate as well. Hi Cody, I'm a italian Radiosonde hunter. I'm pleased to see you recovering a Radiosonde. Usually they are disposable devices (unless otherwise stated). They are sent twice a day from different places (about ten launch sites in Italy) in all-over the world. It's possible to track them with a cheap sdr usb dongle and a PC. The model usually used in europe (rs41) is re-programmable to transmit in HAM frequencies. They usually have different ambien sensor and a gps receiver.
Something my garden science teacher taught me back in middle school when our greenhouse got aphids was to mix a bit of Dawn dishsoap with water in a spray bottle and spray that over the plants. The bugs can't digest the soap and so they die off.
rather the surfactant negates the hydrophobicity of the bug's chitin exoskeleton and allows water to infiltrate and block its spiracles, suffocating it.
The bugs die because the waxy outsides are dissolved due to the soap and then the water drowns them. If you add a little neem oil to this it also kills their eggs.
Even better is specialized potassium-based (vs sodium, most other soaps) insecticidal soap. It's brutal against aphids. "Safer" is the popular brand name in Canada, I don't know about the U.S. market.
Plants for winter growing in a greenhouse: lettuce, asian greens, cilantro, claytonia, spinach, parsley. they all can take frost when hardened off and bounce right back after thawing. might be a more nutritious and tastier way to get veg in late fall and winter than trying to push tomatoes. with low light levels and cold temps, tomatoes taste like nothing anyway, even if you get them to ripe in your greenhouse. If you want more tips or have questions regarding that, DM me, I have grown cold hardy crops in an unheated tunnel through the past two falls, winters, springs.

Most ladybugs voraciously consume plant-eating insects, such as aphids, and in doing so they help to protect crops. Ladybugs lay hundreds of eggs in the colonies of aphids and other plant-eating pests.
I did research in a greenhouse for my masters and found that introducing lady bugs worked well for aphids. You could also try diatomaceous earth, but then you run the risk of hurting good bugs like your bees. If you shop around you can find them both pretty cheap from wholesale places. Love the series!

soap and water deal with aphids really well. get a sprayer from your local hardware store fill it with water, add liquid dish soap (without artificial dyes or perfumes). a weak solution would do fine, then spray every plant top to bottom and get undersides of the leaves.

@@bugsmith9751 yes that point has been made numerous times, the problem with GMO is how it is being used. Major conglomerates take over BigAg and only use certain GMO varieties so that they can maximize profits. Surrounding family farms and ranches get cross pollination inevitably resulting in less seed diversity and extinction. A whole host of ecological problems. There are plenty of heirloom farmers and heirloom seeds but because of GMOs, the trend will eventually see that any heirloom and diversity in Ag plants gets wiped. There is a big problem with GMOs but it's not what everyone else talks about.
Ladybugs are your best friend against aphids. Neem oil is also an organic way to kill aphids. I only recommend you use neem oil on the plants you don't intend on eating the foliage; tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, etc. Soapy water is also an effective way to kill aphids and can be used on things like lettuce. Just be sure to wash the soap off the leaves before eating. A few drops of dish soap in a liter of water will act as an effective spray for the aphids. The soap makes it possible for the water to wet the aphid exoskeleton, whereby they then drown.
I read in an old housekeeping book that was from the 1930's or so, that a good way to get rid of wood-boring insects in your subfloor is to do basically do the same exact thing. Since the CO2 is colder and there's no air flow, it pushes out the oxygenated air and sits there for a while.
Yeah... That bit in the movie always bothered me. Yes, the plants died, but even frozen potatoes can be used as seed potatoes, just with a lower yield than never frozen potatoes.
@@Kineth1 they didn’t explain this in the movie but in the book he couldn’t regrow because the dirt became sterile and he didn’t have another sample of earth dirt to re-rejuvenate the soil

Cody you gotta spray them plants with some paraffin oil and water mix. That’ll kill the aphids if not look up “soldier bugs” and get some lady bugs sent to ya!
It's difficult to send things to Mars, especially sensitive bio cargo like lady bugs. Even wax and soap takes up valuable cargo weight in a space ship meant for Mars. This Chickenhole Base is an experiment to try and replicate living conditions in a first human basecamp on Mars. Everyone seems to forget that detail with these videos. No Amazon Prime on Mars. Everything in the space vehicle must be absolutely critical to the mission and not able to be sacrificed. CO2 is plentiful on Mars as is freezing temperature atmosphere, which is why Cody did this.
@@Targe0 I ordered some a few years ago for the tomatoes. They came in a mesh bag, the instructions said to spray with 50/50 apple juice and water, before opening the bag. It really wouldn't be that much work or $ to buy and put on gloves when you handle dry ice, but it will increase your safety massively. Not to mention people who don't know that are watching would learn about the danger of dry ice.
This is a known bug in robocody’s software. The ambient temp was high so the gloves were removed and the brief exposure to low temps didn’t trigger glove installation. Fortunately he was undamaged. I think an easy fix would be to make gloves a permanent fixture. Thanks for your feedback.
You're talking to the guy who ate dry ice in the past... He isn't going to wear gloves. He's well experienced with it and the viewers of this channel have seen him handle mercury so we're not morons.

Add nettles to your greenhouse. Fermented nettle extract is pretty effective against aphids. It smells… oh boi, how it smells. But is safe for plants and humans and gets the job done.
Haha luckily on mars you wouldn't have to worry about insecticides, I would imagine. Unless of course the aphids figure out a way to build a space shuttle capable of reaching Mars. ;-)
I LOVE those videos so much. The challenges of living in autonomy are one of my top interests. I find it extremely compelling to watch someone find creative solution to overcome their problems with limited resources. Although he is not quite there yet, i have no doubts Cody will achieve that goal eventually, and I cant wait to see him do it. I only wish i could do more to help him.
I think that weeds such as velvet leaf, dandelions etc. could play a big role in terraforming Mars. My resining is that plants we consider weeds that produce hundreds to thousands of seeds from one plant could cover the planet in a faster time period. Dandelions are also completely edible so if we pick plants that can grow and potentially even flourish in harsh climates that are edible we would have a edible version of grass that could be harvested if things get ruff or your food supply gets contaminated. Once we have large bodies of water we can start planting trees that produce large quantities of oxygen and can be easily propagated. Once oxygen levels become greta enough we can start introducing animals like rabbits and even pigs that multiply quickly and are a good source of meat. This is just theoretical and I am not sure how we could go about forming an atmosphere however if you have any ideas please comment below. Thank you for coming to my ted talk
little note, you cant just form an atmosphere on mars, because mars has a solid, non molten iron core, the magnetosphere on mars is very weak, so solar winds strip away most of the atmosphere that it has
For killing/getting rid of the aphids try to pour old used coffee grounds on the soil around the plants. My mom (home gartner) have used coffee grounds for all her highly infested plants and fairly quickly after they completely disappear. You can do it beforehand so they never even come the first time round. It doesn't harm the plats at all (only making the soil a bit acidic maybe?) and it completely safe and biodegradable. Also it's a good use for something that is otherwise just waste.
You can put the offcuts of the tomato plants in a water bucket and leave it soaking for a few days, then spray the brew on your infested plants. Worked for me against caterpillars mostly. You can also try vegetable oil/water mixture against bugs and mites.
About a week ago I had to put on my headlight and pick 500+ apples off my apple tree. I still haven't found my food dehydrator to process them all in to sweet tasty snacks, though.
cody reminds me of the protagonist of a horror movie that inevitably survives but through immense hardships during the course of the movie something about that shot of him using the light with his glasses on oh my god.
The nights out there must be amazing and a little spooky at the same time. Without alot of light pollution there must be an amazing night sky, but at the same time when you have a serious problem it takes along time before help arrives.
@Cody'sLab hey cody fellow gardener here what I suggest you do is add some ladybugs to your terrarium tube, this'll get rid of the aphids(since the ladybugs eat them) whist protecting your plants. Or spray them with soapy water either one works.
Venting the exhaust through a heat exchanger in the greenhouse would help heat the greenhouse, but venting the exhaust directly into the greenhouse sets up a horrible contamination scenario. Most effective method would probably be to bubble the exhaust through that tank that he set up with the black pipe to act as a heat sink for the greenhouse. That would help warm the greenhouse, without adding any extra holes in the greenhouse, and absorb the peak heat from the generator.
@@Kineth1 Yes, but there is no point burning fuel where there is so much sun per year. Solar pannels can do the same without the contamination, heatwise. CO2... I'm sure Cody can come up with a long term way to generate it or simply use a natural (homemade Castille maybe) soap that'll help during his War on Aphid and have other uses as for general cleaning at the same time.
effectiveness? 10/10 would kill all aphids, but it would also kill everything that lives at all because carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are not the same thing
The ideal composting temperature is approximately 140°F to 160°F higher temperatures can be reached if you can find anything that get it that high. Usually the green powdery mildew from grass clippings gets it near 160+.
The fan was the mistake. Co2 is heavier than air. Afids near the floor so you would only need it to fill halfway up and leave it like that for a while. No need to mix it with air via the fan. Cuz 100 percent should kill them right?
There is way too much diffusion for any part of the container to reach near 100 percent. It is a gradient, with the highest concentrations sinking very near the bottom. He had less than 50% concentration after all.
@@kelanbarr9646 He needed more ice then. :) I would love to have seen that all the way to 100% to see the affect on the afids and the plants. With enough ice he could have pushed out the oxygen through any hole near the ceiling.
@@consaka1 plants can only tolerate up to a certain low level of CO2. Even though they use CO2 and H2O to make sugar they're not tolerant of high levels of CO2. You could see how they were wilting. It might be because CO2 dissolved in water is carbonic acid.
Loving this content, especially Buddy! Aphids are a pain here on Earth, I can imagine they could be a much bigger problem isolated on Mars. Something I never even considered until now! Great vid, I look forward to more updates!
Cody, if this project is going to be scientific rather than just fun, you should make scientific goals. Use this restart as an opportunity to re-design the whole base. Define the goals and thereby identify the equipment / base layout necessary to fulfill these goals. Then, start preperations and construction asap before the ground freezes, and use the winter to prep your science experiments. I'll be much more useful and yes, even fun this way, trust me.
Well, Cody used a solution that would probably work even better on Mars: Open it up to the natural atmosphere (or lack thereof). It's not like those plants were going to survive a lot longer. I was raised in the high desert in California. It gets *cold* at night in the winter, as I'm sure Cody is well aware.
Rose gardeners sometimes plant garlic plants near each bush to keep aphids away. It is a form of chemical warfare that makes the area less attractive for aphids.
If you have problems with gnats or any other root attacking insects, you can sprinkle hot cinnamon powder (should smell like Atomic Fire Balls) on the top of the soil before watering, the bugs really hate it, most plants don't seem to care.
Space: because killing it with fire is too dangerous. Kill it with cold. Love the series, looking forward to seeing how you plan to survive the winter.
I over-winter potted pepper plants. Aphids have a field day as there are no natural predators inside my house. Previous years I was able to control them with some soapy water applied with a small paintbrush. This year was different. They would come back strong after soaping. Looked a lot like yours. I resorted to neem oil. It killed them instantly, but I think it might have damaged the leaves of one of my plants (not a pepper) Still less damage than the aphids were doing!

Cody, I never usually comment on any videos but I wanted to let you know these chickenhole base videos make me extremely happy. Hope you will enjoy this enough for long enough to keep doing this, because these videos can have a big impact on individual people. They might inspire and help others more than you know.

Oh nice, in your pictures with the giant jack-o'-lantern, you can see Mars next to the moon. Fitting for your base!
Or - put a couple of guinea hens in the greenhouse and they will convert those aphids into guinea eggs, which are richer than chicken eggs!
Even better is specialized potassium-based (vs sodium, most other soaps) insecticidal soap. It's brutal against aphids. "Safer" is the popular brand name in Canada, I don't know about the U.S. market.
Add some vinegar and salt to that and you have the best weedkiller you can ask for

Most ladybugs voraciously consume plant-eating insects, such as aphids, and in doing so they help to protect crops. Ladybugs lay hundreds of eggs in the colonies of aphids and other plant-eating pests.
Soap water works too

Cody's laugh is the best.
I did research in a greenhouse for my masters and found that introducing lady bugs worked well for aphids. You could also try diatomaceous earth, but then you run the risk of hurting good bugs like your bees. If you shop around you can find them both pretty cheap from wholesale places.

I really hope people start to see the benefits of GMO's soon.
people are too worried because the name is scary, even tho almost every single crop that humans cultivate to date, and basically every spice, is essentially a gmo, just produced over a longer time
@@bugsmith9751 It's like nuclear power or anti-mass spectrometry: there's potential for good, potential for evil, and potential for unforeseen consequences.
Love this series ❤

I read in an old housekeeping book that was from the 1930's or so, that a good way to get rid of wood-boring insects in your subfloor is to do basically do the same exact thing. Since the CO2 is colder and there's no air flow, it pushes out the oxygenated air and sits there for a while.
It was hard to watch all those plants die. Reminded me of The Martian.
Wow how did I not think of that? it's almost exactly like the Martian. Cody had to go with the nuclear way
Yeah... That bit in the movie always bothered me. Yes, the plants died, but even frozen potatoes can be used as seed potatoes, just with a lower yield than never frozen potatoes.

Issue with ladybugs is after a day or two they leave and that's in regular gardens, in the tube it would likely be even quicker.

Love the intro. I have been pondering for some time about getting a drone... Hmm
You can put the offcuts of the tomato plants in a water bucket and leave it soaking for a few days, then spray the brew on your infested plants. Worked for me against caterpillars mostly. You can also try vegetable oil/water mixture against bugs and mites.

How effective would having a generator exhaust into the green house.
wouldn't that pump other un wanted gasses into the greenhouse?
ewwww

Dude, you do the most awesome and informative things. I'm so glad you decided to share your adventures with us all!
I’m very jealous of the bottom bunk setup you have. that looks SO cozy
