Migrant workers relocate outside after ban on sitting in Taipei Main Station’s concourse

- Sunday was the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr and for years, Muslim migrant workers have congregated in the main hall of Taipei train station to celebrate the end of Ramadan. But owing to COVID-19, the Taiwan Railways Administration has decided to ban sitting in the main hall. On Sunday, migrant workers relocated to the station''s outdoor surrounds. The TRA says it''s still trying to determine whether sitting on the floor of the main hall will be allowed in the future.
In years past, the Muslim faithful would congregate in the main concourse of Taipei Main Station to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, but this year the public has been forbidden to sit in this area owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. So the Muslim migrant workers, who have a weekly habit of congregating on the concourse floor, moved outside or to other parts of the station

The police are over there. We dare not go, so we’ll just sit around the edges of the station.
Railway personnel held bilingual signs reminding people to wear masks and practice social distancing. Railway police were also seen in the main concourse keeping order. People who sat down on the floor were told not to. Compared to Eid al-Fitrs past, this year’s turnout was visibly sparse. There have been rumors that railway authorities want to keep the ban on congregating even after the pandemic ends.

It’s a pity. Many people would come and meet up. Now we can’t just sit and chat anymore.

The best place is right here. It’s air-conditioned, and in the winter, it’s cold out, but it’s not cold inside.
Now that the main concourse is off limits, the crowds took to the arcades outside to have a picnic.

This year, the number of Muslim migrant workers in and around Taipei Main Station is about a quarter of that of previous years. Aside from the main hall’s checkerboard floor area, all the other places are open for people to take a rest.
Due to the epidemic, sitting in the main concourse is still verboten. The TRA will meet with members of relevant agencies, academia and civil groups to determine whether the public will be allowed to sit or not to sit on the floor. A decision will be announced at the end of July.
Train stations are not for congregation, there are better venues.

So banning them from sitting in the station just caused them to sit by the arcades. They dodnt seem to have solved much
Taiwan should have a dedicated place for these people to gather and enjoy Taiwan. Workers leave their own family to make a living. They take care of work that even the locals don’t want to do. It’s the least a nation that wants to advertise itself as hospitable can do.

This is dangerous. If there is a disaster, or a major train accident, these people can be very obstructive. The gathering should not be allowed in the first place. Am surprised by the lack of safety conscious.

Don't they have some other places to celebrate Ramadan festivals ? They sudn't b allowed inside the station ..cos they will not maintain guidelines of social distancing ..these migrant Muslims can celebrate festivals at homes but I think that ,for some communities festivals are more important than human lives ..
Not all of them have their own homes, a lot of them work in the households of others so on their days off they stay in public since they dont have their own property
@@npc9207 Understood. But it is a "train station" and not a picnic spot. They can surely find several public places in Taiwan like parks, open fields and even mosques.
Train station is for people going for travel. They need to rent places then interfering public system!
