  • The Alishan Forest Railway fully reopens on Saturday, 15 years after the line was damaged by Typhoon Morakot. For the first time, passengers will be able to ride from Chiayi Station all the way to the Alishan Forest Recreation Area, some 2,000 meters above sea level. Later this month, the railway will welcome a new train to its historic fleet. The Formosensis train starts service on July 28, but rail fans got a sneak peek on Wednesday.
The Formosensis is made with two types of native cypress, the Taiwan red cypress and Taiwan cypress. Passengers will be offered themed bentos and snacks as they take in the views of the stunning Alishan forest. But if you haven’t bought a ticket yet, you might be in for a wait. All tours until the end of September were fully booked within an hour of sales.
