- In this video we share a bit of our backstory with you. It took us 10 years, from the fragile dream of buying a farm, to discovering Italy, falling in love with Piemonte, going through the house hunting process and finally buying our house in Piemonte, Italy.

This is NOT a definitive guide to buying a house in Italy. There are several of those on UA-cam that are very useful and illuminating.
This is the kind of story that we missed hearing more of: the personal, individual choices and decisions you'll be confronted with when you're starting this kind of adventure.
In January 2023 we bought this farm in Piemonte, Italy. We'll be moving there permanently in 2 weeks time.

i consider myself beeing an introvert thats why i rarely approach people by myself. but when i visited my grandma in italy as a kid, i always looked forward to also visit the neighbours. anna-maria was a sweet old lady. she loved baking and her roses and had a dog called susie that got occasionally insulted when it ran over the flowers. its a small village, people know each other and we always had a heartwarming welcome when we came. i'm not sure why i tell you this.. try to enjoy making others happy like anna-maria did, and you will too live a long, healthy and happy life.

I have found a place I really like. I like your little steps approach and how to keep the candle burning. And I like the non-linear perspective... I also have the feeling it goes that way. It constantly amazes me that we always end up where we are supposed to be without necessarily being aware during the process that it only happens in that exact moment and that exact place. I have been patiently waiting for over ten years now to find it and I have had to let go of all my expectations that it would be easy and just keep living where I am until that time.

Hi Andrew! She definitely did, and thank you for reflecting that back! The way we see it is that allowing the process to be non-linear, is allowing that which needs to find you to come on your path. There was so much more we could have said in this video, but we're trusting that whatever needs to be said will find its way into future videos in time :-) And the idea of "the house that chose us" already made its way into our opening episode.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it! I would say that Bertus is the more methodical thinker and I'm the more intuitive one :-) We complement each other very well in that respect :-) The restlessness you mention is very familiar. But if there's one thing that this process has taught us, it is to be patient, with ourselves, and with the world really. This has spilled over into many other domains of our lives, including our businesses. The times where it has felt easy is when we approached it with patience and relaxing into the unknown. The times where it felt hard is where we were pushing to make things fit that linear time-line that we are so used to :-)

Glad your dreams are coming true and you are sharing your journey with us. Yes Canadians and Americans have many similarities, but also a lot of differences. Having lived in both countries the biggest difference would be Americans not knowing much about Canada. Whereas Canadians are totally influenced by the US on daily basis. I’ve also lived in the Netherlands twice, i continue to practice my Dutch with the Duolingo app!
Congrats for the decision and courage to take such a huge project! The project is nicely evolving. The region looks nice and decision around moving to Italy makes sense given some relatives also being not so far away. The list of alternative countries was nice. Personally, I think that mediteranium/alpine part wins over the rest. Though personally would move to different country than you as a result of long term prospects as Italy is in a structural decline and will continue to be declining for foreseeable future. As such, infrastructure and basic services will continue to deteriorate. Which is some other cases is not looking to be the case.

We’ve just started our 5 to 10 year plan to move to Italy. We’ve both turned 50 this year. We already have family who live in Piemonte.

It is interesting to know your reasoning for why you have chosen this area and property.
I am in England. We very very rarely get any forest fires and also very rare to get an earthquake - and even then, I’m not sure they have been bad enough to cause damage to buildings. We do however get lots of rain, and flooding seems to have become more common. So you referred to maps for earthquake and fire risk, I look at flooding risk!
I hadn’t realised that you can drive back to friends and family within a day - does that mean you will have lots of visitors (friends and family) to come and help you with the renovations? …… or will they be hoping for relaxing visits 😊

Love your explanation and so intrigued about all the countries so close together.I live in Australia in Victoria and three of my children moved to Queensland which is two days travel away on reasonable roads out of towns and not though mountains so to think that so much is so close is mind blowing to the likes of us.our area is semi rural now we have neighbours, not when we moved here,we are in bush fire area and have been burnt out once, rebuilt quite quickly ,which is not happening to people now,even major storm damage is taking a couple of years to get fixed for many people,and that is now the major issues we live with, but we love it here and feel at home.
Good Decision to come to live in Italy, especially if your mom is already here. 👍
I came to Italy too years ago, but it was for love and I didn't need to look to property. We are living in an area of Torino and I would like to suggest some places to visit where you can take very good pictures.
On the first place it is Gran Paradiso National Park, there is Col di Nivolet and Punta di Belvedere, from this point you can see two incredible lakes, one is green but the other one is Blu, it is my favorite place on the Planet Earth - every time I am there I see them in different colors, it is magic place! 😊
The second one we go more often because it is closer, it is Moncenisio lake, just at the border in France. Good place to relax and walk, you can also visit some small villages down there. From there sometimes we go to Col de Iseran, sometimes we get snow there in the summer.😅
Sometimes we make big tours in France. One of them is via Moncenisio lake, Col de Iseran and then enter in Valle d'Aosta in Italy.
The other one is via Val Susa, Cesana, Monginevro, Briancon in France, then Call du Galibier, Modane, Moncenisio lake and enter in Italy.
Another interesting tour is to go to Colle dell'Agnello, Col d'Isoard that is a spectacular place, then Briancon and via Cesana to enter Italy.
If you like to hike go to Monviso that is nearby you or to Cervino in Valle d'Aosta.
Nearby here in Piemonte and Valle d'Aosta you can visit many castles and fortress as Exilles, Forte delle Finestrelle, Fénis, Bard, ecc.
In autumn we like to make a tour nel Le Langhe, the colors are picturesque! 😊
Ah yes, visit also Lago Maggiore with it's island Isola Bella, che e molto bella, and Isola dei Pescatori, also the near Lago d'Orta.
But you know Italia is so beautiful place and I love it, as I love my native country Bulgaria. 😊

Take in consideration that places like Moncenisio and Gran Paradiso are closed in the snowy months!
So use the summer to visit these places. 😊

Very interesting video. What did you both do for work back in the Netherlands? And what work will you be doing remotely in Italy to fund your life there as you probably won’t be getting local employment, at least not immediately.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who is envious of you being able to live your dream. I live in Brisbane, Australia and I am particularly envious of Europeans having sooo many beautiful countries on your doorstep to choose where you’d like to live - to me it would be such a gift to NOT have to spend 27 hours on a plane to visit Europe, where I have always wanted to live since I was first there in my early 20’s… sadly it will never be a possibility for me.
I sympathise with Isis about not liking the look of Holland as I feel the same about Australia - to me it is ugly (at least Queensland is), burnt out, unbearably hot and humid. The landscape, to me, looks dead and lifeless and the bush is not pleasant to look at or be in. Unlike Europe which is beautiful and green and I believe safe from poisonous snakes. The worse thing about living where I do is that the heat and humidity from summer is never ending, lasting at least 7 - 8 months of the year. Being outdoors is unbearable as you feel like you are being cooked alive and you sweat like a pig all day, so you spend all your time indoors in the air conditioning hiding from the heat and humidity - & we feel like we are in prison. It’s only really comfortable to be outdoors in our ‘winter’ which is in June & July.
Sooo, I live vicariously through people like yourselves who relocate throughout Europe and create their dream lives. I eagerly look forward to your updates, thanks for sharing.
I also live in Australia but my feelings are completely different I live in the ranges of Victoria which is green 90% of the year and you can spend much more time outdoors.if you don’t like Brisbane look further around Australia there are many beautiful places with different climates and scenery so don’t knock the whole country instead explore the country till you find an area you like that is more like your beloved Europe and move there.
@@elizabethstreeter2145 Yes, I completely agree with you that Victoria and many other places in Australia have beautiful green scenery with reasonable summers.
I wasn’t ‘knocking’ Australia, I was stating a fact as it affects me and many others I know in Qld. Lots of people like me don’t have the freedom to move interstate let alone overseas due to extended family commitments that make relocating impossible. I’d move in a heartbeat if it wasn’t the case… and I can understand why you love Victoria so much, if I could live anywhere in Australia, Victoria would be my first choice.
Weird take. Australia on much of the east coast heading south has great climate. You may have visited Europe but you obv have no clue how 1700h of sunshine a year feel. Winters are long, cold and dark. It's no coincidence that suicide rates are so high here. Seasonal depression is real. Not to speak of low salaries in much of Europe, compared to AUS or the US. The nicer places are crazy expensive to live in and in pretty sure you wouldn't gain anything over living in Sydney or Melbourne. You're a classic case of selective attention and frankly, you have no clue what you have in AUS. You don't even know how easy you have it.

In the beginning of your video I asked my self: Why not Germany? I am from south-west Germany, Palatinate region. This is quite rural. The large, old farm house of our family was sold for just 75k€. But then: Yes. The house is large and has a large garden. But it is still in a village. Solitary houses with farm land around are somewhat uncommon in Germany.
i think for at least 4-5 years we were convinced it would be germany for us! 😊

Personally, as a Brit, to avoid the heat, I'd be looking at the foothills of the Western Alps.
glad it was insightful! we are about an hour drive from the sea, but we haven't noticed any price influences because of it. the ligurian coast line is definitely more expensive but real estate prices in the mountains (even the ligurian mountains) are much lower.
temperatures at the foothills of the alps and where we are (we have an elevation of 550m above sea level) are very similar. we've also looked for property there, actually that's where our search in piemonte started, but we've organically ended up a bit more to the east 😊

We moved! The last month we drove up and down between The Netherlands and Italy twice and between that and unpacked computers editing moved to the background for a while :-)

We have a geometra, she came recommended so let's hope that indeed it will be an easy journey :-) with plenty of good challenges, but without too much struggle ;-)

we'll be doing a video on this topic in the fall/winter. it all depends on what size of house and land you want. but generally, for something the size of ours with lots of work to be done asking prices are around 250.000-300.000 euro. our house is huge though and not what most people would need or even want 😊
So interesting to hear what makes people move to a new land. My opinion is that you two made the right move. No cows in holland coming soon is a good reason to move. Being able to have your own land to "grow your own foods" might be very smart reason too. How about medical now that you will be living there? I learned a lot on this video on where to live in Italy. It would drive me mad about the permitting process for sure. So in your area, it is still strict on building codes? There was no information regarding your alien status? How does that work? Yes, we'll also have to deal with strict building codes! Those are the same all over Italy. Regarding the "alien status": we aren't going into this too much as we are European citizens and don't have to deal with visa etc. so we can't speak from personal experience about that process.
Just wondering, what income you both will be living off and how will you pay for renovations..I noticed you are a photographer and what type of work does your partner do...will you both be looking for employment in italy??
Hi Joseph! We are both self-employed and won't be looking for employment here. We are moving over our own businesess to Italy. And we have savings to get started with the renovation. My work these days is mostly online (I coach other creative business owners) and we are steadily building an adittional income stream from making these videos as well.

We did, actually but it never made it to our shortlist. It's where my late stepfather was from. But for reasons that can't be explained by ratio, it didn't feel like a place where we'd like to settle down. In no way do we feel that the regions where we looked are "better" than other areas in Italy - and we're looking forward to making many trips to all that Italy has to offer in the future, as we have been doing in the past years as well.
Interesting but if you want to grow your channel or keep the people you have then this pace is way too slow. I will be elderly by the time you start doing the actual work 🧓🏼👵🏼👵🏼👵🏼👨🏻🦳
i think you might have missed the parts where we (repeatedly) share that we aren't even living there yet. all the videos that we've shared so far have been recorded over four weeks total of being in Italy. 🤣 that said, we'll do the work at whatever pace feels good to us, thank you very much 😉
