Fly Fishing: What are tailing loops and how to stop them (with slow motion)

  • Tailing loops when fly casting can cause knotted leaders, tangled line, and missed opportunities. Tailing loops and closed loops are often confused with each other. The most common causes and solutions to tailing loops are often incorrectly defined and taught as well.
In several of my past tailing loop videos, I formed tailing loops by doing things not often seen in real fishing situations. Thanks to a great seminar earlier this year taught by Macauley Lord, I was inspired to redo my tailing loop video. I encourage you to check out his channel at / 4mackle . It is full of great casting instruction. #flyfishing #flycasting #tailingloops #windknots #castinginstruction #howtoflyfish

Well done. That was the best explanation of what a tailing loop is (and is not) that I have seen. Thanks!!

Excellent coaching tips - the slo mo and commentary really demonstrated the good and bad elements of a cast. Thank you!

Amazingly helpful for me ! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻 can’t tell enough how well explained this is.
I am going fly fishing every day almost for a year now at least in the evening for some carp here in our pond and you explain stuff so well and I can even see it now what’s going on so I can try to copy it now and especially KNOW what my mistakes are not just have to guess and try around.
Great channel. Can just recommend anyone to watch the videos here for your fly fishing!!!

Glad they are helping. Ein Weißwurstfrühstück ist wunderbar, besonders mit einem Bayrische Lager.

Absolutely one of the best instructors I’ve seen. We had a flyfishing convention here in Texas in October. I sent as many as I could to your channel to learn to cast. Really appreciate it Capt. Myers. Have a great weekend! 👍🎣

I’ve been a SW flyfisherman for 10 years but was lacking at efficiency and failing with long presentation in wind. I paid a small fee (a bargain!) to have Captain Chris Myers analyze my cast by video and worked on it all summer. I then stopped by his area recently for a lesson and really got down to brass tacks with my casting and feel my skills are much better. Our charter the next day was rained out. I have a Bahamas flats trip in a few weeks and know I’m going to do much better. Thanks Cap’n Chris!

I spent about 2 hours a few nights ago, just trying to find a good instructor on UA-cam to help me with my casting - after a disappointing and depressing Red Fish trip in Louisiana. I found your channel and I am really pleased I did. You do a beautiful job of teaching - and the next time I am heading to Orlando, I am going to look you up. Thank you so much for such GREAT content.

Really the best channel so far for me to really see what I do wrong and what I do right. The slow motion videos are amazing for me to slowly understand what the fly line is doing in combination with the rod and rod tip! Thanks again!

You may get tired of hearing it, but I think your casting instruction is well above anything else i've seen on the internet and I have watched dozens of other content creators. Please keep up the great work.

Chris, love your videos, I think you got your concave and convex terms mixed up at the 3:35 mark. I do it often when teaching. I think concave = going down the cave with the rod tip.

Ok!!! That’s why about 10-15% of my cast end up a big cussing episode!!
