I think this is actually a natural way to cast. I am self though, other then a fly casting book i picked up when i was very young, but could barely read English back then, so it was mainly pictures. Somewhere along the way this unloading with the wrist just started happening and it felt right. I think the environment were i practiced at actually forced me to do it unconciously. Since the first time i tried to cast the rod in puerto rico, always had very strong head winds. So i had to make tight loops and get as much line speed as i could or it wasn’t happening. That also helped me on my back cast. I was sure that once i trew that loop behind me, it wasn’t going to fall on the ground, so i could take my time before the forward cast. I find this to be an issue when i teach other people. They can’t see the back loop, so they rush and don’t let it unroll because they fear its going to drop.

Nice job the haul I use more to pickup the line and add speed to the cast I'm not aware if use on forward cast . Working for me when I'm changing direction I think I use hauling then

Sure this is OK for single fly but it causes closed loops…..so multiple flies will tangle?

Good Q Mike. I really don't think so. the loops are actually less tight than typical, and you can control them better, so I think it would work fine with more than one hook, but I'll ask Mark.

Ah, he doesn't know what he's doing! Just joking. I had the pleasure of watching him tie the Slammer with Yak hair quite a while ago at the Fly Fishing Show in NJ. Always a pleasure when he shares his knowledge. Thank you for this most excellent vid.

I have a question about how he is casting all his fly line without breaking his rod I don’t know if it’s just cause I’m using “budget” rods or if I’m doing something wrong I’ve broken the same 150 usd fly rod twice the first time I thought it was just a faulty rod blank but it broke again in the same spot the day after I trade in my first rod

Take up golf, bet you can bomb it, lol My Sage rods work well for getting 80/90 foot casts, fun game

You guys may want to watch your own videos, especially the slomo sections. When Mark sais to load the rod (translation), it has almost no bend at all. Then when he sais to unload it (rotation) bend increases to it's max. What he sais does not nearly match what the video shows. Rotation bends the rod, not translation. Cheers B
