What people from else where don't understand about Africans is that we always make the best out of every situation , we are happy with the little that we have . Why would you expect sad faces in that place ?
I grew up in a similar society , though no floating houses on lake Victoria , I still reminisce about eating all the fish I wanted for free 🤣 and swimming freely all day long .
But when other people come , they make that life seem like it's for poor people but simple life is the best , it's gold!

I used to go to Makoko every month to volunteer when I lived in Lagos. I miss it honestly. It's difficult to describe but the people are warm and honestly so beautiful There's joy there and I love the fact that a lot of local organizations are contributing to the lives of people through art, healthcare and so much.

Unfortunately, as a Nigerian, it's always felt to me like our own government is against us. It's frustrating, but the pride and joy we Nigerians have will always persevere.

6:08 Kolkata is a city in West Bengal, India. That sweet snack is called 'Badam Patali' or Peanut/Nuts with Natural Organic Sugar.
It is a common desert snack here in West Bengal.
Surprised to see that this city has it and in our own city's name lol.
    How weirdly cultures interact.

The history is slavery. The Tofinu people were trying to evade the Dahomey kingdom's raids and they started building their houses on lagoons because they know Dahomey treated large water bodies as ominous and would not go near them. The water houses culture spread to Lagos as Ganvie is connected to Lagos by river which boats can sail over :)

As a Nigerian I believe i speak for most of us when i say our, politicians/ government are our nemesis. we do not have natural disasters and the likes just very dubious, self centered people at the helms of affair.

Quite a few of them were living there 80s into 90s but as time goes, development pushes more into Makoko. As the money bags buy lands they push them further into the water. It’s grown into a big community now and will keep growing.

In some ways this life is probably has some upsides. Humans are made to be active and have a sense of community and cooperation. They are probably more supportive of their neighbours as well.

Progress is being made by the government to develop the place without interfering with its natural habitat. most of those that live in makoko are not Nigerian but neighbouring West African countries. To them it's a home and they prefer to stay there because their occupation are into fishing 🎣

Maybe they don't want it changed that much. Maybe they only want improvement. We that do not live on water won't understand that. Maybe they've grown to love living on water.

@thedemouchetsreact Makoko residents are mostly Ilaje. The Ilaje are a subset of the Yoruba tribe and live on water, whether on the coast of Lagos or on rivers inland.
I would like the Lagos State Government to help clean the water.

It’s an old impoverished fishing community that has thrived by itself. Neglected by the government, the sprawling water settlement lives in very deplorable conditions at least to the outside observer, they clearly don’t give a F**k as you can tell from the video. Probably some of the happiest people you’d meet.

90% of those living on that water wil lnever moveto land. They will tell you this is where they were born. Besides, 88% of those peole living in that water are from Togo, Benin repulbic and maybe few Ghanaians. Most of them prefer there because they evade tax and the government do not go there. I heard the lagos state government is planning to move them cos they are really polluting the water.
Ofcourse, Nigeria do have people that live on water too but not in lagos, can only find them in ondo, delta, bayelsa etc
    makoko is a natural swamp
