Here's an early look review of the new airbrush I was sent to take a check out, including a test run and some cleaning and maintenance advice.
In summary it's not bad, MUCH better than my first airbrush and a very economical large needle brush for volume/speed spraying of acrylic primers if that's your thing.
Will be following up on this with a full "speed" paint up and weathering of the featured Tau Empire Stealth suits shortly, looking to match them up with my Ghostkeel and see if we can learn some new processes together.

For just painting miniatures and terrain, what is not to love about this thing!? Simple to use, good coverage, no mess, no wasted paint! This thing is AWESOME! Got to have it. Also, frequently I simply just don't use my airbrush because even if it takes me a bit longer painting with brushes, the time I save is spent anyway on cleaning afterward. Yeah, this thing is a game changer.
Thanks for this informative video. It does not seem to be on the market in Germany yet. Looks very interesting to me. I'm looking forward to your upcoming videos. I'm a beginner and want something easy to use and plain to clean.
Even though I'm not a beginner, this thing looks really neat. Since my old Iwata brush has kinda kicked the bucket, I've been looking for a new one. The whole bottle swap thing really caught my attention. Cleaning seems pretty easy and quick, which is usually my main gripe with funnel-style airbrushes. Even though you do lose out on fine stuff like pre-shading, I'm not too heartbroken about it, just because there are many alternative ways to get the same look. Thanks for the video man, I would not have found this without ya.
You didn't show us the various amount of line thickness it can do.
This might be good for large terrain but not so much for miniatures and models. The quick change is nice idea. I would like to see more detail work demonstrated to better understand its limits.
Nice review and demo ! Ive never seen this setup before, I can totally see this being a good setup for bulk painting . Like ya said its not meant for detail work but its still got a place for hobbyists...

I can see this being perfect for painting rc bodies especially for doing the main color
for the price of the brush with bottles you can buy a Badger Patriot, which is great for large jobs, but can be ok for smaller to semi fine work, but the no clean,thats a deal "maker"
Hi Polly, yes I personally agree. Top 3 entry level airbrushes to recommend are Sparmax Max 3. Iwata Neo (mostly made by Sparmax OEM I believe) and the Badger Patriot. Whichever is based locally so you can get spares easily.

Reminds me of the Aztek Airbrushes. Which are almost all plastic, no needle and perform pretty similar or the same as a typical airbrush. The nozzles are easier to interchange to change mm width of spray pattern. Though being of plastic I sort of wonder about the cleaning limitations and lifespan of them.
I can see the point in base coating or when you regularly apply certain colours, that you can store in those bottles for easy access and fast work, but I don't think that this airbrush will replace many dual action airbrushes for more detail work.

That quick change feature looks awesome!
It seems to be very one trick. Its main feature is swapping colors easily yet I can only see myself using this for priming due to its speckling

The performance appears like a more efficient rattle-can. Would be useful for large army priming, but probably not worth the expenditure if you have a decent airbrush setup already.

For a first airbrush, it's pretty simple. Point and shoot. :)
I'd say no to it for a first airbrush and here's why. If you try and do all the cool things you see others doing with a conventional dual action airbrush you'll be very disappointed. So it will either turn you off from airbrushing entirely or you'll have to go and buy a duall action anyhow. Do yourself a favor watch other vids there's a ton out there. Maybe even find someone near you who will let you try using their brush. Don't be intimidated by dual action brushes. It's all about practicing and muscle memory you will get better fast. Iwata are good I personally prefer Badger myself but get as much info as you can then look for a good sale on them or a package deal. I'd avoid the cheap Chinese airbrush they usually don't perform well and when something breaks parts are not available. Anyhow that's my 2 cents with good luck and have fun.

For painting miniatures, this thing is gonna be the shizznit man. Maybe if you are doing more precise artistic applications where you need to adjust your flow rapidly on the fly, ok you might have a point. But for the price, ease of use, practicality and lack of clean up/maintenance issues, not to mention the money it's likely to save you in the long run from unwasted paint, I see this thing quickly becoming a staple for many model hobbyists/tabletop gamers. I'm in love with this thing.
@@solodragun Glad you are enjoying it and for big terrain projects I think this might be a really decent machine. But if you're doing small figure work it won't work for that. If you only can get one brush I'd still say stay with a good dual action and learn to use it then getting something like this later on.

While not quite as bad this harkens back to GW’s paint spray gun toy... can’t say I’m a fan, saving a little bit more and getting an actual dual action brush would be a better long term experience for even a beginner. Great review though!

Yeah, having to use their bottles ... this is great for primer, or certain base coats that you use a lot. but if you have a wide array of colors you'll be spraying, it could get expensive getting a lot of the bottles...

Seriously - great review though. I've pondered using one of these, for large scale models (no pun intended phnar, phnar!), with three or more colours. I'm tempted much easier, quicker to use, clean up, than my double action ABs. Also perfect for varnishes - they're awkward to clean up in a double action AB, you can always see where they've gotten too. And for kitchen table modelling who wants to be using lots of volatile, solvent spray cleaners? I always liked the Aztec range, but they were problematic. Thanks for posting.
I'm one of the top lowrider airbrush artist in the USA and the best airbrush is Iwata airbrushes
With total price for the airbrush and set of spare bottles rivalling something like Iwata Revolution I don't really see the point.
The spray pattern is way too wide for any finer work (even free handing 1/35 camo). It seemingly sprays way too much paint at once, which would make shading difficult. And in general lacks the control that any dual-action airbrush offers. I don't think all this is worth the ability to quickly switch paint.
I would be interested in seeing how easy are the spare bottles to clean. I think that's pretty important as cleaning regular airbrush is pretty straightforward, but this doesn't use traditional needle.

Yes, this is my 4th airbrush so I understand. As I mentioned in the video it's for entry level, first time airbrushers or a dedicated primer gun.
@@PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright I would agree that it could work as decent dedicated primer gun (especially if the tips don't just dry up after each use and I could use it repeatedly without cleaning).
But I would never recommend this as a first airbrush. Any half decent airbrush with .3-.4. Anyone who takes this hobby even a little seriously would outgrow this airbrush within very short time and would have to get a second one. But I would never recommend this as a first airbrush, it's just too limited in it's application. It's just too limited in it' application.
Well it depends on what you use it for and to what level of painting you want to achieve. Like this would be great for straight up re-coloring gunpla kits. Or on the other hand it could be used for airbrushing outside or modelling. There are a lot of potential applications for it, but very fine scale painting might not be one of the best
@@rancor1223 maybe ok for primer but i wouldn't recommend to anyone new, it will ruin their painting experience and might put them off. You would get better results using rattle cans.
Did you ever post a reshoot with the correct operation that you mentioned? I am interested in this set up for basic primer and simple single color model painting.
Hi Edgar, this is the re-shoot with correct operation that I mentioned. The first fail that you may have seen (and we all had a giggle about) is gone! Yes it's not bad for that job but I don't find myself picking it up again. I went back to my Sparmax Max 3 for simple stuff - hope that helps.
so what are your thoughts about using this set up for primer and solid color spraying on models???
Yes, it works for this. I might probably suggest the Beetle Compressor with their Max 3 Airbrush. It does the same without the hot swap technology but you can do a little more as you grow into airbrushing. Hope that helps!

Obviously the ones insulting this product does not paint very much to see that this product is absolutley perfect for any and all painters.

i'm not convinced: how about cleaning and troubleshooting? i would prefer an iwata neo to begin airbrushing. ps: i'm not a big fan of plastic tools: they wear out too quickly

I wish the whole assembly was made out of metal tbh. I understand that the plastic may be durable, but honestly when it's metal-on-plastic with constant swapping, it seems metal would've been more suitable, at least for the parts in contact with the metal/glass bottles and needle assembly.
it's actually metal on rubber. (o-rings) how else could it make a non leaking connection. not with metal to plastic that's for sure.
Only thing I could see using this for is on big terrain pieces. And with the price over 100 by the time you buy a bottle set you could own a really decent dual action brush. I wouldn't even use this to primer minis send it flows way to much paint and doesn't have the control of a dual action.
Except, if you already have a compressor, it's actually not a 100 bucks. Seen it on ebay for 55.
@@solodragun Yes but the bottle set is the same cost as the gun. Have to have the bottles or it's pretty useless as a fast change air brush. So yeah still At $100.

@@AlexBabcock-hw9iz My interest is for 3D printed terrain. I have literally thousands of pieces to paint in my backlog. Anything that speeds up primer and base coating is worth $100.

Did you have any clogging issues with that primer with this airbrush? I've tried MIG one-shot a few times with my airbrush and every single time the clean up was a real hassle, that thing just dries so damn fast. I've tried most tricks I've read about like dropping some thinner first, working quick and not letting it sit in the cup, but after 5 or so minutes my sparmax hb-040 is just welded shut >_>
“Sloppy pullout” is a phrase I’m way too familiar with…
How does the Flyer compare to a simple internal bottom feed single action like the simple ones from Badger I use one of those early rebranded Revell Guns as my to-go Airbrush for large Quantities of primer and simple colors (e.g. Terrain)
EntilZar excellent question and in all honesty I have no idea! I have never used a bottom feed single action, well, not yet!

Do not get this if you are going into airbrushing. This is not a airbrush! Trust me on this.
If your gonna just be getting into airbrushing, save your money and get yourself a Badger airbrush, or a Pasche airbrush or a Iwata.
Just search Ebay or, get into the beginners airbrush forums on Facebook. There, you can ask all the right questions and get all the right answers. Trust me on this.

As a follow up video, I might actually do a beginners buyers guide, which is not something this video tries to do. It's simple a review of the newly released product. I've worked in Japanese pro hobby studios for years including Hobby Japan and have seen a handful of airbrushes but also like to keep the subject nice and simple. :)

Perhaps would be OK for some painting. However it's not something I would consider for the work I do.

How would you rate the compressor in this video compared to others that you have used?
Great question Donald. It's good, very good for how compact and quiet it is. If I only used it a few times a year for a handful of miniatures, for priming and basing for example, it would be enough. If I was planning to do multi hour sessions though, I would get a larger one, like the Arism VIZ. HTH!

Which would you recommend for a beginner? I'm also looking at getting tamiya paints but I'm trying to buy them a bunch at a time. Any suggestions were I can get that done?
@@imdoobie80 well, it depends on what your painting on. If your painting on say cloth, I would use a Iwata Eclipse or a Badger anthem or a Pasche vl. There are more different and good ones to use on clothes. I use 15 Iwatas for my airbrushing onto clothes. They work great.
Now, it also depends on your budget.
As far as paints, once again, it depends on what your painting on. Now Createx and Aqua Flo paints, can be sprayed on a lot of different surfaces. I've used it on a lot of different things. You just gotta know how to prep it and finish it.

Always be careful with the sloppy pull-out.

Those times are long gone. Iwata realized how popular it got and adjusted the prices. You'll not find one below 70 euros anymore :-(
I've been using my Iwata Eclipse for a few years now, but I'd seriously be lying if I said I weren't interested. The jars are the only thing I'm not totally sure about, since one of it's main draws is the easy changing of colors, but with only a few jars, it seems kind of moot
Buy more jars :) I think that would be a option for this air brush :)
It seems the most expensive part of the jar is the metallic cap. If possible, it is ideal to just keep one metal cap and use it for all bottles.
If you do that tell me how it works out before I invest in this new air brush @@duerf5826 .
@@duerf5826 Yeah I was thinking about that, but then you'd have to wash out the cap whenever you switch paints lol Like this is a great idea, especially for beginners, but it seems kind of tricky to integrate once you already have a bunch of paints
Wouldn't that completely defeat the purpose? You would have to clean the metallic cap between paints... just like regular airbrush.

Its ok. Everybody makes a little mess with a sloppy pullout. Nothing that a little wipe and a high five won’t fix.

Man this looks like the "Paint Zoom" of airbrushes.....doesn't look too precision to me, plus over time changing cartridges, metal to plastic , seems like it would wear out rather quickly.
I dont know boss. Cleaning up an iwata eclipse seams 100% easier.
Guess how many times I have used this since? It's between none and zero! haha! I just went back to my usual airbrushes. Oh well!

I use model master paint and I tried to put the paint in dropper bottles. after I poured the paint in the bottle the paint harden and was no good.
will these metal caps thread onto a 1/2 oz bottle from model master?

Not even comparable to an airbrush, unless you mean it shoots paint with compressed air. But this clearly lacks any use in modeling except for priming and laying down a base color. I wouldn't even zenithal highlight with it with that lack of sensitivity
I think flyer spray are useful for a large areas!
I like the idea of not cleaning the brush. The plastic could be stronger as you mentioned steel and plastic ,steel wins .
You'd still need to clean the bottle. Which could be a bigger problem than cleaning an airbrush.
Yeah but not constantly cleaning them like you do with the one container at the tip of the brush . There are always plus a minus about any new tool.
Bottles clean out easy.

Sorry, only tested the AMMO One shot and unless I had the glass bottles, I don't want to use solvents with it. Next time!
I'm afraid it's a no from me. The paint just floods out to the point where it's pretty much unusable. I have so much more control with my current Iwata setup.
