    A properly maintained airbrush will last a lifetime. Keep away from super harsh solvents, keep the Hoppe's for your firearms and the purple power for your floors. Best things to use are 99% iso alcohol, lacquer/enamel thinner, and actual airbrush cleaner. You'll want a bit of each product to tailor your cleaning sessions on which type of paint you used last. I have a couple of airbrushes that my dad passed down to me from the 60's/70's and 80's, they work perfectly and the chrome is spotless. One is a 60/70's era Paasche AB Turbo (not for beginners btw) the other is an Iwata HP-SB from the 70's/80's. You don't always need the latest and greatest to do great work, although sometimes it's fun to have the bragging rights :-)

      Also if you take the tip out from the front, you don't pull paint through the airbrush! Saves a big cleanup later on.

    Nice Tutorial. I've watched a number of these over the years and I always learn something new. 2 updates: 1. I would say that when you remove the needle, don't have any fluid in the cup. This will prevent debris, paint, soap and even water going back up into the rear parts. There are sometimes springs etc back there that need to be kept clean and dry; and 2. For long term storage, clean the parts as you have said and use a second airbrush or even a cheap trigger nozzle (it's just for blasting air and has a thin nozzle) to blow clean air through the airbrush parts and dry them. Thanks MBG for the vTute!

    that gun cleaning solvent is whats stripping that chrome finish off of your airbrush. That stuff is formulated to remove metal fouling off of gun barrels.

    • @elronman
      @elronman 5 років тому +2

      I would be pretty surprised if hoppes corrodoed metal, especially in guns. If anything it's designed to remove lead build up.
      In fact I would be surprised if hoppes did anything. That shit is like brushing your teeth with water.

    • @FLSheepdog
      @FLSheepdog 5 років тому +11

      One of the most common misconceptions is that hoppes won't hurt guns. It will. It is a solvent, not a lube. Don't leave it on a metal surface or it will corrode it. Use it then flush it with distilled water or oil.

    • @Margalus
      @Margalus 5 років тому +5

      Exactly, it's the solvent and sticking a brush down in the neck that stripped it. The sonic cleaner is innocent.

    • @eddiegremlin
      @eddiegremlin 4 роки тому +1

      @@elronman Every firearm I have ever used needed oil to stop corrosion. Even Guns (they have wheels you know). will corrode if not oiled. If you're getting a build up of LEAD in the breach or barrel something surprising is happening as it should only be cordite/carbon deposits...

    Hoppe's #9 will remove metal fouling in a bore, it will most likely remove the plating on your airbrush too so its not the right product to use in an airbrush. Windex is available without ammonia so use that instead. If using windex with ammonia (which is alkaline and corrosive), run some hot water through the airbrush as that will gas out any ammonia still left - ammonia is after all just a gas suspended in water. If you leave a bottle of ammonia with the top off for a few days all you will have left is water. What you are probably doing wrong is putting the cap on your airbrush straight after your cleaning procedure - don't. It does not mater what you are using to clean your airbrush which includes thinners, let your airbrush air out for a while before putting the cap on. You don't want the gasses staying in your airbrush, in the case of thinners it will work itself into rubber o-rings and reduce their lifetime, in the case of ammonia or Hoppe's... well you have seen the results. Hope that helps.

    Hi, I am new to all this so watching all 'beginner' videos. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I would like to point out, just for your information and accuracy, you cannot electroplate stainless steel on to another metal. The plating material has to be softer than the receiving metal.

  • @chrisgriffith1573
    @chrisgriffith1573 5 років тому +4

    Why I clicked on this video? *Option #3:* I wanted to know if you knew something I didn't already know...
    Nope.
    #1 Backwash *after* running some water/cleaner into the nozzle over the tip, so that what you are "backwashing" is dilute, otherwise, you are pushing pure paint... and that will simply prolong the cleaning.
    #2 Get yourself a container that you can "spray-off" into, like a cut-off milk jug, so that you can run some cleaner/water through the gun without having to run over to the sink, they make those things especially for that purpose, too, right?
    #3 When you pulled the needle out the back end of the gun, you just pulled dirty water/paint/gunk into an otherwise clean area of the needle housing, and if you are going to remove the needle *for* cleaning, remove the tip/nozzle and push the needle out the front so you do not dirty the back end of your gun.
    #4 No matter what type of acrylics you use, they all derive their pigments from more or less oil based products, meaning: the base is acrylic, the pigment (color) is oil suspended into the base. What this meaning regarding cleaning your brush is that there needs to be a degreasing agent, however weak or mild, just to remove the film that can build up over time into the smaller hard to reach areas of the needle housing nearest the tip. This can build up over time and prohibit flow around your nozzle tip, prevent siphon and capillary actions which is how the airbrush works to deliver the paint. Using straight water is fine for a rinse between colors, but not good for over night, and certainly soaking the gun in a shot glass of cleaner over night cannot be good for the smooth surface of the needle and nozzle tip, because the solvent in the cleaner can micro-pit the finish on the metal from constant exposure. That is (no doubt) how your old gun cup got eroded so badly.

    Why is it necessary (about 8:20) to put teflon tape on the air inlet threads, when there is already an O-ring in the
    fittings to prevent leakage there?

    • @henrikhilskov
      @henrikhilskov 5 років тому

      your o-ring is made of rubber. rubber will be old after 4 years from when fabricated and then you can use teflon tape for a period before you have to change the rubber 0-ring.

    You use Hoppes #9 and Purple power to clean your airbrush. That is why your shit erroded like that. Hoppe's #9 is a pretty potent solvent man. Its designed to removed caked on carbon from inside barrels not acrylic paint. Thats like pounding a nail with a sledgehammer.

    I am green as grass with airbrushes and compressors. Question: once my compressor fills and is idle, about every sixty seconds it comes on for 2-3 seconds then turns off. Sixty seconds later it starts all over again. I can't find any air leaks and all fittings appear to be tight. Any thoughts?
    Sure would appreciate some help and advise. THANKS!

      You sounds like you probably have a leak somewhere unfortunately, it may be even a seal in the compressor

      EVERY TIME THERE IS A SEALING ORING ON THE FEMALE PART...YOU DO NOT USE TEFLON OR ANY OTHER THING...THIS APPLIES TO PLUMBING AIRHOSES AIRBRUSHES ANYTHING...WITH THE TEFLON ..ESPECIALLY IF YOU USE IT THICK YOU DONT SCREW IT ENOUGH SO THE SEALING RUBBER RING DO ITS JOB...!!EVERY TIME YOU SEE A RUBBER RING ...JUST SCREW IT...NO TEFLON NOTHING...ONLY IN METAL TO METAL CONTACT WE USE SOME SHORT OF SEALANT...!!!

    • @DjOrs96
      @DjOrs96 6 років тому +2

      What Giannis is saying is if there is an o ring on the end of your female piece there is literally no point in using teflon tape. If its a metal to metal contact and there is no orings or anything then teflon would be necessary. In saying that adding teflon to a piece with a rubber o ring wont hurt it.

    • @henrikhilskov

      @@giannislymperopoylos5574 O-rings is made of rubber there lose it flexibility 4 years after production and you then can strenght the period from to get a new 0-ring with teflon tape. However lubricate rubber o-rings will get the O-ring to a longer life (this is teory) it all depend of how harsh you environments are

      I have found that leaks at fittings are often caused because manufacturers incorrectly state that its fittings are 1/8 and 1/4 NPT. In fact, many hose fitting threads are BSPP, not NPT (British Standard Pipe Parallel). Adapters can be found and proper adapters should be used to make things fit together properly, however people are not aware of two different thread standards and they often end up wrapping the threads with Teflon tape and forcing them together as far as they will go.

      I agree with the gang. The ptfe tape is generally sought for leakage in the Zenny or other similar low priced compressors.

    • @GurtMcDirt
      @GurtMcDirt 5 років тому

      The lube just helps the needle thru the o-rings and kinda sorta makes it easier to clean/smooths up threads. Not sure if yours works, as long as it’s not oily or interactive with the paint it should be okay. Sorry, I hate to be that commenter, hah. Id just scrape up some scrilla for that iwata small tube... that thing will literally last years as you don’t need much at all, just a dab on the fingie.

    I just find airbrushes a nightmare to work with. You've got to get the right consistency of paint, the cleaning up of the parts later puts me off. I'll stick to my brushes. I checked out the new Warcraft film today here in the Uk. Mmmmmmmm, it was interesting. I prefer playing the real thing though.

    That's not how Teflon tape works... It goes in-between the grooves of male and female adapters. Teflon is non stick and so acts as a lubricant of sorts in order to more easily unscrew them.. it also provides a small boundary layer in case the grooves weren't machined perfectly

    dude, there is ZERO stainless steel electroplated onto that, its Chrome.. given that stainless steel is a compound/alloy, it cannot be electroplated onto things, it would de-alloy (the compound would separate into its elements / ionic bonds would dissolve), and its likely only one of its elements would bond.
    7:45, you are holding the Paint Cap (the brassy metal), and the nozzle (the silvery metal) is screwed into the end of it, they both sit underneath the Air Cap.
    you know what the worst thing is about me having to correct you? - i have never even owned an airbrush.
