'Scania', Bless her, owes me a mouth full of tea . . . Maybe your quest now, is to rescue one of it's Strom-hearted siblings from obscurity & woe, tune to full-fat TL spec on decent pipes & tyres, giving you a soft-rat Q-ship the envy of any urbane-worrier. 'The Q-strom - now on Q plates for extra cred!'
From a wide & wisely appropriate tedium, to an even more appropriate TDM, butt lower down? : )

Mr Dyson I really appreciated this review for selfish reasons: I am considering the SECOND gen V Strom 1000 or a TDM 900 for early next year. I once has a 2007 650 strom but thought it not powerful enough for big miles. I test rode a TDM after that one and liked it a lot, but thought I needed a BMW 850ST (No!!) It has since gone... For my next purchase the (2014 0r 2015 1000) Strom is favourite to win out but I see the sense of a TDM. My question to you is: had you bought a second gen strom rather than the heavier (and, let's face it - duller) first gen, would you have kept it, do you think? I know this is asking for speculation, but I am curious, selfishly. THANK YOU, Art

I have ridden the later V Strom Art; not long enough to know if it would have been a keeper, but long enough to know that it was superior to mine and I would probably have kept it longer. Compared to the TDM the Strom is more powerful and faster if heavier and thirstier. Ultimately needs change and tastes change so most bikes get moved along eventually but if you go for a 2014 V Strom I don't think you'll be disappointed as long as you don't mind the looks, they can be an acquired taste :-)

Thank you for that reply! (I did mean to say 'BMW 800ST', readers!) I am of a similar age and height/weight to you (I have a dodgy neck and back thing, BTW) - I have a similar requirement of a bike ('soul addiction', perhaps), so I am interested in your thoughts and experiences. That was very helpful and I may go for the TDM for less weight, better sound and beauty - I think it looks great in black! More research to do.... THANK YOU and ride safe and happy! Art

I had a 2002 and a 2015. At first glance the 2015 seemed far superior in every way; way more midrange grunt, stronger brakes, ABS. However in the end I wished I had kept the 2002. Why? The four pot brakes were impressive on the 15 but the ABS didn't work very well. I could stop much quicker using threshold braking on that bike than I could engaging the ABS. Overall in comparison the brakes and ABS on my 16 Burgman 400 are considerably better.
On the 02 Strom I found a simple change to a braided brake line on the front improved braking dramatically.
The massively increased midrange grunt with the 15 was a mixed blessing. It was huge fun but the way the bike was geared it always seemed to be running right at peak torque (4000 rpm). Why is this a problem? It made travelling at a steady speed much more of a challenge. Whenever I looked down it always seemed to be doing 10 klicks under or 20 klicks over. Around here that is enough to get a performance award. This was made worse by the fact that sixth was not an overdrive like on the older bike. It made for stunning top gear roll-ons but cruising , especially at faster highway speeds was a pain. Had I kept the bike I would have gone up a tooth on the primary.
For touring which is what I like to do, I found the I found the OG V-Strom 1000 to be the better bike. It had a bigger tank, 25 L instead of 20L and with the softer midrange and overdrive sixth was easy to travel with at steady speeds. It was much less tiring to ride. In terms of fun, I found the secret with the older bike was to always keep it about 500 rpms higher that you would think should be appropriate on a 1000cc bike. Then the riding experience was transformed. I just wish I had figured this out sooner.
