    • Suzuki V-Strom 1050 Fu...
On any ADV group ride you go on, there is probably a rider with a v-strom. While not flashy, these bikes seem to do everything, and at a great price. What is the story of the v-strom and what kind of rider (and ride) is it for? Let's look at the story of the v-strom from 2002 to present. Pros and cons of the vstrom, development timeline, yearly changes, a buyers guide to used models, and how it compares to other bikes like the Tiger, GS, Africa Twin, KTM etc.

I’m lucky to have ridden long and hard on many bikes in many places over the last fifty years. Three of my bikes have been new V-Strom’s (‘09, ‘12, ‘15) which I’ve collectively ridden well over 200 000 trouble free kilometers. Because I rarely ride these bikes with a pillion, and I have other bikes, I prefer the DL650. Are they perfect? Far from it. But, in many ways, they’re the perfect bike for me. The cost of ownership for my three ‘Stroms has been absurdly low, reliability has been very high - they’re easy to ride and they’re comfortable. Sure, they have a face only a mother could love but if you’re the type to be riding motorcycles more as a fashion statement than a sport, you’ll not be watching or reading this about V-Stroms - right?

Oh pshaw. They can look great if they aren't clown car colors. The '16 XT I picked up is looking fine! Murdered out with the black wire spoke wheels, Barkbusters, crash bars and Al Givi Trekkers, skiddie and smoked windshield. Love the look. Every ride, "Is that a BMW?" Nope, it's more reliable with less maintenance lol A wee bit underpowered but safer for it.

I have a 2018 VStrom 1000 and I absolutely love it. On the road is does great on long and short rides and off road it has done much better than I anticipated. I have run several single track trails as well as hill climbs, jumps, etc. No issues with the bike at all... I will however go with more of a 50/50 tire when the stock tires need replaced, as that is the only weakness I have experienced. Now keep in mind, I do not ride this nearly as aggressive as I do my 690 enduro, but I do ride it the same places. And 8 - 10 hours in the saddle of the 690 enduro is killer, but a breeze on the VStrom 1000. All depends on what type of riding you do and how you modify/accessorize your bike to fit you, your style, and your ride!!! Bang for the buck.... you can't beat the VStrom 1000! RIDE SAFE FRIENDS!

Hey I have a 16 1000 with the mags and I've also done some pretty heavy duty trailing with it no doubt the thing eats tires like crazy ! Front and rear. I have had tkc80 the Shinko 804 805 combos they have all worn extremely fast the most recent I've tried that I am super happy with are the Dunlop trailmax Mission tires I am seriously impressed with them they look like street tires but I promise they will surprise you as long as you stay out of deep mud they are worth at least one set to check them out they are super stiff if you mount them yourself make sure you eat your Wheaties and warm them up a little before you try to mount them they will wear you out!💪💪😉👍

Nailed it, Ian. The weirdest thing about owning a vstrom 650 for almost 14 years, is it's obvious shortcomings eventually become the best thing about it.....but, that takes a while to reach that inevitable conclusion. I still absolutely adore my modded up 2006, and for the riding I do, it's perfect (dirt road touring, mild jeep tracks, tarmac cruising, commuting and occasional mtb bicycle and furniture transportation - a true SUV motorcycle).

I believe when Suzuki chose the german word "Strom" they were referring to "Power". The problem is the translation of strom to power it is more on the electricity side, not so much meaning powerful. There are multiple ways to use the word strom mostly to describe something that flows.

Bought an '08 V-Strom DL650 last year & love it! It's a 3/4 road & 1/4 off road bike & that's what I prefer to ride now. Great on the pavement & dirt/gravel roads. Not meant as a single track bike. Had an old XR250 for that. I don't know why people think it's ugly though. Not the old ones at least. Not really a fan of the looks of the new ones with the beak. Kinda dorky. But whatever... still a blast to ride.

But I kept having trouble with weak drive shafts and wiring failures.
Sold it with 120,000 miles on the odometer.
    Bought a sweet V strom 650, a 2012 model with 20k on the odometer for a mere $3000.00.
I love it for modest trips and medium dirt roads.
But if I'm going where few dare to ride I take my '96 DR 650.

‘Twitchy steering that washes out at the first sign of sand’…………yes. The ft end on My ‘06 650 Vstrom can be downright scary on loose dirt/gravel roads. It’s amazing how easy it is to push the ft wheel. So I just ride slower. If you want to ride off road, get a bike with actual off road geometry. Also, pay attention to fork sag, and avoid the temptation to add stiffer springs and thicker fork oil. Imho, while this may help reduce bottoming, it only exacerbates the tendency to push the ft wheel, which I consider to be a much more important problem to go after.

Last December I bought a 2012 DL1000 and to date have put about 5K miles on it. It's my first v-twin. My only other street bike is a '75 Kawasaki Z1 which is an inline 4. Other than that I've ridden dirt bikes in my teens (I'm now 58). I really enjoy the torque of the big twin. I don't need a lot of top speed. I've not even had the vstrom topped out yet. But I do like the feel of the massive torque. Then the thing just lopes along at 80 mph all day long if you want. I was surprised by how smooth it is at that speed and how easily it handles highway speed. Any time you crack the throttle it takes off. It's the comfiest seat I've been in and it does two-up with no problem, which is why I went with the Vee instead of the Wee. I also love the upright ergonomics. The only niggle I have with it is that it feels tall when in the tight twisties. It doesn't flick back and forth very quickly. To me, that is such a minor thing. Coming from the Kaw 900, the thing I noticed first was the engine brake. When you let up on the throttle, those two big cylinders begin to slow the bike down significantly. Once I learned the feel of that it really assists riding in the twisties. I feel like I don't get myself into trouble as quickly and it saves on the brakes. The available power, the smoothness, comfort, and the ease with which it lopes along provides the "grin factor" every time I ride it. I am enjoying the heck out of the 1st Gen DL1000.

Personally I really like the newest look, the older shapes without the beak looks like a scared Tweety cartoon without a beak. But the looks grows on you, i own a 2005 dl1000 and id rather drive it than a BMW GS of any size or shape. I agree the offroad-ability is not the best but less than 1K of the 65K kilometers that i have ridden was offroad. It actually makes for an incredible sport-tourer. I'd say ill outrun most full blown adventure bikes and keep up with a lot of sport bikes in the twistys and still be up for some gravel time aswell. I feel that if you truly wat to enjoy the offroad stuff then even the "propper" adventure bikes still suck, thats why i also have an old yamaha xt550 that won't have you tired at the end of the day from wresteling a 400kg adventure bike over some trails all day. If I want to eat up the miles the Big-V wins all day.

2016 650XA/XT. I’m 6’2”, 210, 57 yrs old. I’ve spent 11.5 hours on my VStrom, and felt just great. It is a super comfortable bike to spend time on and just go to the horizon. 400kms if you don’t ride like a nutjob, very maneuverable, about 430lbs wet. I have been on forest trails, rocky boulder roads, gravel, lumpy secondary and tertiary roads mostly (preferred, avoid highways). It’s a mobile camper with the aluminum cases top loading and a large dry bag it carries all I needed for 10 days (the longest trip). I added skid plate, 12v, H4 LED, aux lights, 50/50 tires, made an $18 radiator cover from BBQ screen that fits and looks stock, removable heated grip wraps, changed the terrible windscreen (not good for my height, might for others), mirror extensions (a very good easy cheap mod to do), head light guards. Etc, a few other minor bits. Approx 66 hp and 44 fp torque - whatever, it feels good for the way I ride and for where I point it. Never let me down. This May a car cut out and the straight in, mashed into rear quarter. Woke up being wheeled in. Apparently went over the top onto the paves 30’ away, stood up and came around to pick up the bike. My Strom also survived. Replaced forks and some plastic fairing on one side. I also upgraded to stainless brake and clutch lines and a performance master cylinder. As soon as it’s warm in my garage shop it all goes back together and is reborn for the road again. It’s really good motorcycle unless you need track bike acceleration or feel you need to get some other brand name that has little stars glittering all around it. A great motorcycle for a travelling human that you’ll have lots of money left over to travel and have great adventures with. Ride eyes open.

Great review of a great bike. I've only owned a few bikes, but my 2017 DL650XT is my favorite. Like you, I use a dedicated dirt bike for most off-road (2011 Husaberg FE390) but I do spend a lot of time off "pavement" because I drive 5 miles to hit pavement from my home in SW Colorado. I do wish it were lighter, but after 5mph the weight disappears. Doing 0-60 well under 4 seconds is as much as I will ever need. With a bash plate, T-Rex engine guards and Givi panniers I feel well served for what this bike was designed for.
Ugly? No. I like the 2017 and up design. The overall handling and more than adequate power make this bike a perpetual winner! (I do plan to upgrade to Mitas E087s or Dunlop Trailmax Missions and add a higher wind screen (I'm 6'3" and 210 lbs) to reduce buffeting. At 72, probably my last new bike. Thanks again!

Just bought a V Strom 1050 XT. The red and white colour scheme. It's bloody beautiful! To look at, to ride. The Cruise control is a marvel, stops me speeding in town and country. Really comfortable ride, feels so solid and stable on the road. Traded my DR 650E for the V Strom and there is no comparison off course! I feel the weight difference from the DR so am more careful pulling up etc.
All the technology, ABS, Traction Control, Inertial control, Hill hold, the ride modes.
I am loving it. Amazing protection from wind buffeting, compared to DR that is.
And all the power I need, she flies, sounds good, tells me the time and air temp. What's in the tank and how far it will take me, how many kilometres per litre fuel burn. So cool!

I switched from a BMW R1200GS Adventure to a Suzuki 650XT Adventure in April 2020. Over the past riding season even with the Pandemic I managed to put slightly over 6000 miles on the bike. Ridden Interstates, to two track dirt roads. I did a track training night on the 650XT Adventure. The bike handle great on the track. Most of our ten mile sessions on the track were parade laps, no passing. Our last of 4 sessions on the track the first lap was parade the next nine ride as fast as you dare. I started 5 riders back in the pack. When the green flag came out I passed one bike. I was passed by two riders out of 15 on the track. A BMW R1000 RR and a Yamaha Sport bike ridden by a very young rider. I was holding my own, long straight the bike would catch up with me on curves I walked away from the pack.
So far I love riding the bike. I don't miss the addition 550cc of the BMW. What I like the Wee Strom. I can put both feet flat on the ground at stops. The lighter weight, most noticeable when moving the bike around the garage, I no longer worry about dropping the bike top heavy pig the GS was. I average low fifties for mileage with the 650, giving the bike about 220 mile range before I start worrying about gas.
Changes I have made. Installed a almost new Corbin Seat for a very low price from an add on ADV Rider. A relay switched fuse box. A set of Oxfort heated grips. I installed a Jessie top case that has been on other bikes that I have owned. A set of peg lowing brackets, make the bike feel more open. GIVI Aeroflow windshield, cut down on buffing and wind noise.
Plan to install a MC Cruise, electronic cruise control unit this winter. I got one speeding ticket this past summer due to not watching the speed in a 55 mph zone, creeped up to 70 and didn't notice that I was going that fast.
I am toying with the idea of running a set of Nelson Riggs soft panniers over the Suzuki aluminum cases. I mounted them for a 100 mile ride. I think I like them better, I do need to install a heat shield on the muffler if the bags are loaded and hange lower on the bike.
So far no problems, I will be glad to switch the Bridgestone tires with a set of Anakee Adventures.

The V-Strom is an amazing bike, a true Swiss Army knife. Suzuki really hit the ball out of the park with it. The styling is subjective, I'd venture to say that very few adventure bikes are good looking. The Strom surely looks better than most offerings from BMW, IMHO. I switched from the Givi bags to Pelican bags with the Caribou Case kit. I also had a problem stretching the 525 chain. I'm a big fella who liked pulling wheelies. I switched to a 530 chain and sprocket and geared it down a bit for the low end torque. Just traded it for a new one in June. Got a good deal on a new (zero miles) 2018 in 2020. No wheelies yet on the new one. Got the Givi frame for it so I could use my Caribou Cases. It also seems a little tall. I may need to find a lowering kit for it.

As I continued up to 6k rpm a loud plasticy HOWL started to come from something vibrating, come to find out it was my rear luggage rack... fixed that then realized it just has a plasticky howl coming from the front and that's ok...
Otherwise I have loved the bike and for $2500 and only 9k miles how can I complain... thank God it's a DADS bike otherwise the locals would try to charge $5k for an 05 with 30k miles... haha
There my first 1000 miles experience... more to come

Other comments posted here agree. I highly recommend it to riders mostly interested in going places on the street, but want some ability to get into the dirt. In recent years I’ve been moving towards double-track riding, and putting more dirt worthy tires on the bike made a huge difference. Strom is German for stream or electricity, not wind (or storm). Maybe you got confused because of the enthusiast site Stormtrooper.

I bought my dl650 in 2014 with 30k kms. I still ride it almost every day, it has 216 000 kms on the odo. Valves still within spec. No repairs needed so far, only maintenance and wear items like a clutch, chains, bearings etc.
It is a shit dirtbike but it will do everything without too much hassle. It handles great and the engine is quick enough and fun to ride. The Vstrom might be just ok to ride...but it is a brilliant bike to own.

@@BigRockMoto Thanks! I am hoping the 650 will get the same fairings as the new 1050. I know you're not a fan of the DR big styling, but I think it's lovely. I also own a DR750 and I'd love to get them both together.
I love your channel, keep it up'

I´m super happy with my 2013 V-Strom 650. 81.000 km on the counter without any problems except from one leaking fork sealing ring after 77.000 km. Its design was the best compared to all other versions which are ugly indeed. When my bike reaches its end of life I´ll switch to Yamaha Teneree 700 as it comes without any electronic nonsense too

14 years on V-strom, currently riding a 2017 650 around South America. Every time I ride the Strom I just think...God, this bike is such a Cadillac...so smooth, torqy and fun. I'm really excited about the 2023 1050. Ian's review of the 1050 is indeed the best review on UA-cam. If you're a 90/10 rider and want to rack up major miles, you really should spend some time on a V-strom.

Strom is German for power, not wind. V power makes perfect sense. If you're going to market yourself as an authority, please research your subject thoroughly.

Actually, I do like the looks of the 2015 and 2020 reworks.
They arent as pretty as a Ducati, but neither are its competitors
Ive been looking at what bike to get, to replace my 1st gen sv650 and I keep coming back to the V-Strom.

Nice, homage to the Wee-Strom. I took mine over Black Bear pass in Colorado. It was insane to try it, and I struggled quite a bit. But, in the end, we both made it!

I liked the DL1K VStrom so much, after I sold mine, within a year, I bought another one just like it! My wife and I did a lot of fire-road riding, some dual-track, and a lot of moto camping on that bike. It did everything we could ever want, and it was one of the best motorcycles I've ever owned. I may even buy another one!
