I use two cardboard strips 1" wide x 6" long with holes in the ends to mark the cross. I slide one through each side, tie the two pieces of cardboard together at each end. The 1" width of the cardboard helps me separate the cross when I slide the leash sticks through.

Am a beginner, since this May, and i do the cross different.
I tie a bulky yarn in the middel of the cross, i tie it loosly so it is easy to put the cross on the cross sticks.
I leave the cross ties on untill all the warp is on the cross sticks and untill i am ready to do the first tie on (i dress back to front always).
I also tie up the beginning and end and some more in between, those are tightly tied.
This way i feel more confident the warp stays on the right way and i can leave the loom.
As a beginner dressing the loom for me takes several days Just because mostly i do not have the time (or patience) to do it all at once😁.
Btw i love your channel it thought me a lot, so thanks for this❤️😘

Andrea, thank you so much! I like the idea of just tying in the middle of the cross - very smart!!!

I use a lot of ties :) I'll tie all 4 legs of the cross and I'll tie the actual cross, Ill also have a counting string in there. I generally end up with 2 crosses so I'll tie the other one just at the cross. I'll also put a tie about every yard. I'm not as gentle as I probably should be with my warp chains so having a lot of ties really helps me a lot.

Good tips! When I tie the cross, I use a light colored yarn for the two sides of the cross on the top, and dark colored yarn for the two sides on the bottom. (I began doing this after once inadvertently twisting one warp chain on a warp with multiple chains.) it takes just a moment, you always know the top and bottom of the cross and this easily prevents any twists.
