I agree, but too bad amg can't have a proper transmission like pdk, Even the new dct in the cla45/a45 won't let you change gear when it's needed. I sold my c63 for this reason.

I own a c63 507 coupe and they are fantastic which has a difference compared to the standard c63!

I own both. Sold the E92 m3 and went W204 C63 507. Never looked back. Picked up a F82 M4 about a year after owning the 507. The M4 is a great car!!! However, most of the people posting here have never driven or owned both. The 507 is legendary. It gets a ton of looks and is easy to drive as torque is linear to 4500 rpm. The M4 is slightly quicker to 60 because 100% of the torques comes in at 2000 RPM. Although the M is quicker it takes a skilled driver to do it. Most people will get wheel spin and sit there. The sound and AMG car makes is to die for!!! The M4 may be quicker on the track but they are virtually equal on the street The M4 is the better package when pushed to extreme limits. However, the sound is pitiful. I may get flamed for that but its true. If both cars emitted music from the exhaust the 507 would blast Metallica's "Seek and Destroy". The F82, anything by Kip Winger.

Seek and Destroy might be a great song but it has a thin tinny metallic sound that's surely more fitting of the F80? Sad But True would be more 507 like ;)
I have the M4 and as far as I am concerned, the review of the "soft" throttle isn't really much of an issue at all and really isn't soft at all considering the severity of turbo lag in other cars designed with turbos. I think if there's anyone that's done a turbo proper, the M has done it. But they're also right, it's soft relatively to an NA car that can just crack the throttle for the power. So inevitably the 507 will feel just a little bit more crisp. At the end of the day I feel like it comes down to personal preference. I'm just more into the way the M looks over the 507...just a personal preference?

The C63 Mercedes is the slightly drunk hottie that wants to party constantly. You drive an AMG with a wide grin on your face.
I've tried both. Numbers aside, BMW is more precise, Mercedes is more fun. Simple as that.
But at the end of the day, you are happy with either one and both would cost you an arm and a leg for a service, but they are worth every penny.

Galileo Salomon yes its twice the price of a new Civic Type R, has half the warranty of the Honda, is far less reliable and slower than the Type R, uses twice as much fuel and costs as much per year to tax than the superior Honda its a Bavarian joke on wheels. BMW M pure comedy value form the makers of the ultimate driving pile of junk. Yet another gutless M engine which again is was down on power over the new CTR per litre 154 from the Honda to BMW's 140 , 220 hp per litre is production car power out put per litre . BMW enormous comedy value and what a hilarious spot make anyone laugh for the day like a Mercedes AMG or a Porsche 911 .
Just bought C63 amg. It’s a beast. Did not race it yet but love the sound and engine is a masterpiece.

This C63 is clearly one of the most brilliant cars of the last decade, it has SO MUCH SOUL, and this engine really is one of the best engines ever. I will miss you C63.
He complains about the throttle response but doesn't say what throttle mode it's in... And says the C63 steering is better but does not say what steering mode he is on. He's one of the few reviewers this far that complains about throttle response also. This video screams bias, he even admits that he "loves" the C63
Yes I felt the bias towards the AMG the whole time. Sutcliffe forgot the meaning of a proper old school driver's car. Maybe he's getting up there in age and prefers a bruiser cruiser to a track wrecker. The M4 wins everywhere in my books, even the looks. BMW's were always known for their steering and response and I'm not sure why he's complaining here and claiming a Mercedes is better at these things...HAH no way !!

No seriously M3/4 is good car.. But just as I thought, It's not that much better than the old one if you look at the specs. Which is the exact same reason why the C63 can stop people from buying a M3/4 and buy one of the lasts C63's. It was already better in some ways than the e90/92 M3. Except for the gearbox.
But I'd buy a new M3 in Black if it was my money I guess.. Powerful, not shouty and discrete. Just as I like fast sedans.
TurboDifferent lol yes fanboy alert...I was waiting for the alarm to ring at some point. To each his own but I prefer BMWs to Mercedes just because of the whole driving experience. Many will come here and try to say that an AMG drives better than BMW but I say no way. I'll take either the M3/M4 it doesn't matter. Depends, If you need 2 or 4 doors. The C63 was never a driver's car and I don't see how it is even better than the last gen. The V8 M3 had the highest revving V8 ever made and came with a proper manual gearbox and was beautiful to look at, which sounds loads of fun to me for a track and backroad experience. If I want a lazy fast V8, why not a Pontiac SS, Dodge Charger SRT8, or even any of the other muscle cars with V8s? They give pretty much the same experience as that of the benz, minus the luxury and price tag. Even an Audi RS4 or RS5 sounds more logical to me than the Benz.
TurboDifferent Not that much better? more fuel efficient, much more torque, better gearbox, better tech, cf crank shaft, cf strut brace and then less weight. Even the steel breaks on the M4 are an improvement from the e92. The c63 is much more expenisve and not to mention does not have a free maintenance program. take it to the dealership and they'll charge you $100 just to put more oil in your car and lets not talk about breaks...
Powaup The M4 is a benchmark, and Autocar's review is just hyping us up for stupid reasons. The M4 has yet to prove itself in the real world and BMW is on top of the game right now with the M3/M4 and the M235i. The AMG poses no threat and I don't expect the 2015 AMG to be a more driver focused car either, as Mercedes Benz are not known for the driving experience. Oh and who cares about straight line performance...like i'd rather the new Camaro Z28 or ZL1 over that AMG benz.

I don't think he's complaining so much as he's just noting that it isn't as good as the old m3 or c63 in that respect. He's not saying it's got bad throttle response, just that it's worse than it used to be.
Which does not mean that is actually the case. Out of all 20ish reviews that have come out he complains the most about the car.
Powaup Sure, but how many of those reviews even compare the new car's throttle response to the old one? I've read a few myself, and of them all only Autoweek even compares the old car's throttle response to the new one, and they too agree the old one was better in that respect.
João Soares well fact of the matter IS that the throttle response does suck most likely when you compare it to a N/A V8. Nothing wrong with him complaining about it a bit. That' just how it is. I'd complain too.
I love the M4, but the c63 AMG 507 clearly is the better car here.
I love both cars, but I would personally choose the M4. But It's a tough choice.

The C63 has an automatic transmission with a wet multi plate clutch instead of the torque convertert. Not a dual clutch gearbox!

M4 wins because its a more driver focused car. AMG's V8 is nice but i'm getting tired of the 6.2 litre V8 being used in almost all of their line up. The M4 looks beautiful (subjective) and comes with a manual gearbox, which is a huge selling point for a track junkie and backroad warrior like me. Tuning wise the M4 is gonna take the cake again, because a boosted car with a simple ECU tune and exhaust/intake can make all sorts of numbers. Let's face it, people who buy AMG's dont buy them to necessarily to mod, race or drive the backroads. Very few people buy Mercedes cars with that stuff in mind, yet BMW driver's seem to be the one's enjoying their cars and tracking them frequently, or ripping up canyon roads. BMW's 50/50 distribution, straight 6 pioneering, manual gearbox with rear wheel drive, and a more focused driving approach makes it a winner in my books. Yes i'm biased, not because I own an E46 M3 and an E46 328i and other bimmers, but because I beat the hell out of them daily and track them in the summer and they really are the Ultimate Driving Machines. As far as the stock sound goes, the AMG sounds much nicer, though the straight 6 engines BMW has are the nicest sounding engines PERIOD. Maybe an exhaust mod in the future will make them sound nicer than stock. I don't mind the stock sound either but its too muffled down by those twin turbos.

Stop talking out your ass buddy cuz I don't just own a miserable 4 cylinder BMW, I own and track an E46 M3 and no Merc I've driven, AMG or not, gives any sort of driving experience for me. Hell Benz hasn't made a manual gearbox in over 50 years lol and their cars are simply made to cruise the autobahn as fast and in as much comfort as possible. Fun is a subjective thing and If you think fun means pointing in a straight line and stepping on the gas, whilst holding the steering wheel, well that's your definition of fun. And yes BMW uses straight 6 because they are the only manufacturers of a straight 6 engine and have been doing it well for decades. I see Benz fanboy-ism in you and yet at the same time you are talking out your ass. Please go out and drive some real cars kid.

647killa While Mercedes' are many times more common with an automatic gearbox, they have used a manual gearbox since the 80s, the most recent offering being the R171 SLK-Klasse which is only 5 years old or so.
Also if you've taken a drive of recent M (post-Fxx) and AMG (2011+) vehicles you will find that they've almost completely switched personalities. The AMG won this comparison on driving pleasure and character which is, as you'd know being the die-hard BMW fanboy, what ///M used to be renowned for.
This also rings true for the C's bigger brothers, particularly the E63 which has put the F10 M5 in its place in every criteria relating to dynamics and feel. AMG's current range of V8s also silences ///M for character and even outputs.
By all means continue living in the past where your golden era of ///M cars is. But unfortunately that does not relate to the present.
I'd still go for the m4

The C63 is just as driver focused. The C63 has been around for 6 years and it still puts up with the M4? The M4 is a brand new chassis, suspension, all the tech and engine, transmission software and tech is up to date. The C63 was developed in 2007, sold in 2008. The fact that it's still even compared should only give you more than enough indication what kind of a car the C63 was. It is a TIMELESS car. Design wise, the design is 7 years old, but still comparable to a brand new car. The fact that the reviewer can even bring himself to compare the 2 cars, should say enough of the engineering and development of the AMG. If the old one just beats it or ties or whatever, the new C63 AMG shall thrash it. Especially having heard the engine on the Mercedes-AMG UA-cam page. V8's forever.
M4 is new M3... so M3 is older than C63.

It is much newer than the merc. I never said the M3/4 wasn't a twin turbo straight six, so where did you get that from? I said V8's forever because the new M3/M4 isn't a V8. It was released in 2014 where as the C63 was released in 08 with this engine and chassis. The new M3/M4 is being released now, and it still lost a comparo with a car designed and released in 2008? Come on guys, learn a thing or two, or at least how to read. You have no idea what your talking about.
You can also look on this rewiev from anoter angel too: last bmw m3 e92 2007/8, and old clk 63amg (2004-5) could keep up with bmw m3 e92 when he came out. Peopel were saYing the same things, old car can keep with new m3, we cant imagine what new c63amg will do to e92. And what did it do? Nothing! C63 amg was slower on race track tested by the stig(top gear) . Same thing will be with m4 and new c63 amg who will also be turbo charged. C63 will be faster at drag race and not so much when it comes high speed cornering (track). All in all love bouth cars in my own way!

The C63 changed a lot of the market. Many R-models came out from the likes of Jaguar, Infiniti with their IPL etc, and the overall engine the C63 always topped that of the BMW. Sound wise, throttle response and overall response of the engine was always noted to be higher then that of the BMW. The handling of the BMW was great on a racetrack, it did a lot for AMG, and Chris Harris in his goodbye video to the C63 was extremely sad and explains what the C63 did to the M3 and C63.
USASPORTSCARDS but to be fair this wasnt the best review.. mercedes has a new c class now, why not wait for the new AMG version of it then review both up to date cars, they might as well of done the C63AMG (507bhp btw) against the older e92 m3..both v8s both from the same time near enough i think?

On youtube others just seem to powerslide a car about but steve actually describes and shows the CHARACTER of the car which others just seem to not get....don't ever let this guy go Autocar without him this channel is nothing!

costing $11k more with option adding 50Bhp isn't really fair. That's like comparing a standard 3-series to an M3. If they want to compare a standard C63, which would still be more expensive, the M4 would easily win the performance figures.

In a straight line for sure but on a track? that's a different ball game. M3s have never been straight line cars to begin with. The new C63 will also be much more expensive than the M4. That said, I think it's gonna be a beast and look forward to seeing it on the road. Cheers

Had both, in fact had M4 and 4 C63 w204’s in estate, coupe and saloon. C63 rules for me. Drama, noise, fun and smiles all day long. M4 is great but it’s too mechanical, all the excitement is done for you, just turn wheel and put foot down. C63 keeps you on toes :-)
Funny how BMW always makes a huge deal about equal weight distribution. Well the M4's is 53-47, and guess what - so is the C63 507's! Same.
And Merc never mentions it.

+Fluterra funny how merc needs a 6.2l v8 to make 80 more hp, than the m4's 3L!!(which is less than half of the merc) straight 6, which also does 10 more mpg combined whilst kicking a merc's ass :D on a track,straight line, anywhere really, and its more comfortable and its also 11k less . with that kind of money you can get a much better exhaust and a tune and a lot more hp than the merc whilst still being more economical !
+ManiakP0w3r "There's no replacement for displacement"! If you watch and read ALL the comparisons between the M3/4 and the 507, the 507 wins. I'd rather have real steering feel, no lag, an exhaust note that is not a recording played through my speakers, and reliability - even if it costs a little more. It's worth it. (Actually my 2015 507 lease is considerably less than a 2015 M4).
I've owned few AMG's and few M models and i have a F82 M4 that is my daily right now. I love every single one of them in their own way but my heart has always been with the M models. I've never had the C class and my last Merc was a 2012 R230 SL63 AMG which i took a train 3 hrs to San Diego to get the car and to this day i regret selling it
Daten Schutz haha, nice one, i agree with everything except the part that only arabs and grandpas drive the Merc.We have both cars in our family, between my family and 3 of my uncles families including my cousins and aunts i think we have about 15 or 16 of them and I'm not Arabic and none of my uncles are grandpas's yet. Maybe around where you are they happen to be Arabs and grandpas but around where i live it's all ages and ethnicities driving both the benz and the bmw. I prefer mine over the Benzo but I have owned some in the past. 2 Bad, BM over Benz any day, sorry but that's my take on the two
Weight distribution - check the stats on the C63 507 and you'll see that it's the same as the M4.
The problem with the current gen M3/4 is the engine. It sounds incredibly lame.
And, like all M cars, they fall apart. Good luck keeping yours out of the shop!
The 6.2L V8 is one of the greatest engines ever built. Check out the reviews if you don't believe me, including several from Chris Harris.
The current gen M3/4 engine will be forgotten in 3 years.

I have an f30 335i and while I'm not amazed at the sound of it, I feel like I don't drive it hard enough to even notice the sound. Most of the time, I'm shifting at 2,000 rpm and listening to music. Even when i'm passing someone, I don't even notice any engine noise. Of course, on the rare occasion when I do want to have fun, I put it into sport mode only to be disappointed by the lack of engine noise.
My point is, it's nice to hear that AMG V8 burble but I can live without it and I'm pretty sure other people can too.

Sure, if you want a sportscar without any emotion you can live without a nice aural experience. If you love cars - you can't. BMW only has one advantage right now: the other new performance sedans are not out yet.

The BMW M4 doesn't do 0-60 in 4.1 it does it in 3.9

Like you're gonna feel a difference. If someone blindfolded you and put you inside a car, you wouldn't be able to tell a difference between 4 and 5 seconds, let alone 4.1 or 3.9.

Take the money and buy a M3 CSL or a regular E46 M3 with manual transmission and low mileage, bump some aftermarket extras in it and you got a far more exciting car than the new M4.
I know exactly what you're saying here my friend. I own an '02 BMW M3 6MT and they don't make 'em like that no more. Although the V8 M3 was nice, i'm glad the straight 6 engines are back in an M3 errr M4. I love this M4 and the fact that it comes with a manual box, but a screaming S54 will always be my favourite ///M engine.
Ya the CSL is hard to find but a regular M3 is amazing enough for doing everything and anything. I actually would prefer an e46 M3 over everything else, but we can't say too much about the new kid on the block yet. Its got enough time to shine.

I doubt that is true, the new M4 is going to be more exciting than an E46 or CSL because of the turbos & torque. Don't get me wrong, I had an E46 M3 and loved it and have driven the E92 but they are not gonna compare to the M4.
The AMG looks very dated, in fact it looked dated even when it first came out! Heavy looking and a touch flab sided, especially when the previous model CLK was a very elegant handsome car. The BMW by contrast looks bang up to date and even a little futuristic. Bring into play the extra torque, that will make it much easier for the average driver to extract serious performance, combined with the fact that unbelievably it's cheaper too means that's the one that gets my vote, though I'll order mine in a less garish colour.
Like he said, the AMG is from a previous era. Obviously the BMW would look newer, its brand new 2014.

That's not true. M4 is better than C63 in every single way, you can be sure of that. Maybe it doesn't sound as nice, or doesn't have as good throttle response (it can't since it's turbocharged, it's not BMW's fault, it's just how the world spins), but those two things are very subjective as well, some people will even like the M4 sound better or prefer a smoother power delivery with more huge amounts of torque in the middle of rev range. In every other way it's better. It looks nicer inside and out, quality is much higher inside, it most probably handles far better and is faster on road and track, drives better since it's lighter, more agile, better balanced and has more grip, has a better gearbox, it's more comfortable, refined, safer, quieter, faster, more efficient, cheaper to run, more luxurious, better equipped, etc. You tell someone to "face it", yet you ignore absolutely every fact just in order to make your opinion more valid. I bet you any money that 9 out of 10 people would choose the M4 over C63 if they had a choice.

It worries me that people don't seem to love the new M3/M4's that has never been a trait of M cars. They tend to win the majority of competitions they are entered in. I guess times are changing, and it's a sad day...
People's expectations have become numb and dumb. No one wants a more driver focused car nowadays. Hell in a few years, people are gonna hate anything with rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated petrol engine, and a manual gearbox. Cars are changing because people want to protect the environment and the rich folks can't be bothered to correct oversteer and understeer so computers are taking over. Just bring the autonomous vehicles already and all these folks will be happy texting and tweeting whilst "driving" a car.
This was a terrible test. The AMG costs $11k more with the option adding 50 extra power. Why not compare the SlS amg to the M4, or the old SLR while we're at it?

The reason bmw doesn't add 50 more hp is because it would make the car more expensive. The old M3 GTS had exactly 50 more hp, but it was also more expensive. This is the main point of my argument that everyone is too incompetent to understand. I just want equally priced cars competing.

Austin Corbin You mean straight line wise?its similar.. 507 still has the normal C63's Tires+Aerodynamics+suspensions. 255 Section rear max 275with spacers. and the overheating oil cooler that you need to pay AMG $3K for a upgrade, and the non-standard LSD..yup getting a BS
But the BS isn't as functional a daily driver as the 507. I would buy the 507 and upgrade it to handle like the Black Series.
Michael Blundetto ....any C63 is ? Please. M3, C63, These are not Fucking daily drive to me. C63's suspension is so hard that your bottom fell off. Drove it for at least a month, didnt work out well. Not so comfy on shitty american roads.
The 507 is more a daily driver than the M4. Any sports car from the factory with a warranty is designed to be a daily...hence the warranty. Don't daily drive it in Sport+ then and you'll see a difference lol. My E55 was comfortable as hell in Comfort suspension mode. And yes I did daily drive it comfortably. No auto maker would put Massaging Seats in something that couldn't be a daily so I don't buy that. Sorry man.
This is by far, my the most favourite review of the 507, for years. I have finally purchased my own 507 today. And U know whats funny? It has exactly the same configuration as the one in video. Interior and exterior (except the steering wheel side). Its still one of the best cars you can get if you are considering the value for money. The german engeneering at its best and still affordable.
I'm a bmw fan but judging by nearly every review I've seen of the new M3/4 id rather have one of the older generations :/

This is a really, really good reviwie. Altough Steve Sutcliffe choosed the C63 (wich is the one i would choose too) he put all the points in the right place, in the sense of not having to be limited to say the M4 is much better.... No, he said the C63 is an excellent example but with characteristics of its era. The same happens with the M4, lighter, with a gearbox with faster speedshifts etc.. Therefore contextualized both cars.
So, once again, an excellent test where everything was handled as it should.
BMW looks sooo good..but the engine noise...so disappointing...

ive driven the 507 c63 and the 2015 f80 m3 and i have to say lean towards the bmws interior first.... the handling in the 507 c63 just threw me off. i wasnt expecting the car to sway so much.
after driving both i am defiantly buying the m3 in december

The video doesn't do the sound of the C63 engine note any justice. It sounds way better in real life. The audio in the clip only portrays that chopping sound of a v8, but in the streets it's always accompanied by a deeper rumble that always surrounds the chopping. The rumble has an entire personality of it's own. The reviewer isn't lying about the engine

Since so many Merc fans are frantically pointing out that a last generation car, (the c63), beat the brand new M4, we have to acknowledge the fact that the last gen M3 consistently beat, and still beats, the Merc.
According to this reviewer, the M4 lost purely due to its engine - it's lack of throttle response, sound, and overall excitement compared to the c63, despite the performance advantage it gives the BMW over the Merc. The E92 M3's V8 remedies all these complaints - it's lightweight components and low inertia gave it superb throttle response that shames the c63 and anything outside of a Ferrari or GT3. And then there was its sound - at its 8300 rpm rev limit the E92's V8 makes a wonderful sound unlike anything else. The Merc sounds great, but the noise of the race-bred M3 revving past 8000 makes the c63's corvette-like rumble boring by comparison.
These two factors alone, throttle response and sound, mean the old M3 would have spanked the c63 by this reviewers standards. Add to that the M3's better chassis, gearbox, and lighter weight, (all traits shared and improved upon by the M4), and its clear that the addition of turbos to the M4 is the only reason the the car isn't being declared the greatest sports car in decades.
I did find it odd though that the reviewer in this video found the throttle response so lacking with the Beemer, as every other opinion I've read on the M4 has praised the throttle response and adjustability it retains with the turbos.
Nothing wrong with M4 engine noise, only problem is that STUPID, sorry, fake-sound-maker through speakers!

Have you heard it in person? You'd never in a million years realize it's fed trough speakers unless someone told you so, well at least in the M5, and system in M4 is probably even better. And people don't even understand how it works....it's not like they're playing an engine noise trough speakers like when you play a video game or something....it's very complicated acoustical engineering at work in order to make the car quiet inside in terms of unwanted noise.
Kobe B The M5 sound is synthesized. The M4 has the natural sound played through the speakers, so there won't be an issue with it synchronising because there isnt a computer creating the sound like in the M5.

I don’t think you were in manual in that 507... there is a massive difference in shifts between sports+ and manual. Also the 507 is surely massively faster than stock - you would surely notice 10% power uplift in any car?

The fact the 'old' C63 steers better than the lighter M4 is a disappointment. The inline 6 TT also sounds like crap vs. the old S54 and to other great i6TT like the Nissan RB26. I don't also like how BMW ressurected the 'piss color' used on the E46.
The only credit I give BMW M division is the sheer grunt & the pretty good DCT.
The reason you buy a car like this is for the engine. You don't buy it for the ecology, or for the interior cabin "modernness", nor for the carbon roof top, the gasoline savings, you buy it for the fun of driving, the throttle response, the sounds of the engine the sporty feeling, the satisfaction you get when you park your car at the end of the day is why you buy it. With every review I become more assured that my 2013 M3 coupe competition package is the way to go for now. I was thinking of the new M4 so I drove a pre-production one at the dealership and got the same feeling as this reviewer did. He is absolutely right. I think I've got a collector's item on my hands now.
c63 amg is a one trick pony. I've driven both cars.. Yes c63 sounds better blah blah blah but m4 driving feel and overall driving experience was closer to a true track ready commuter car than the c63. Hands down.

Anyone else getting bored of motor journalists slagging off 'road' cars because they are not quite mental enough for them on a days testing when they shred tyres, petrol etc that they do not pay for. Who fucking drives these expensive cars like that on a daily basis. I agree that these are top of the food chain for their models, but people own these cars for all sorts of driving scenarios, not just for driving like a car thief. I am sick and tired of all the spoil journalists complaining about the very best cars, not being enough for them. Let them bring their own cars out for the day and review them, lets see what kind of review they then do.

Sound its not that importand (for me BMW M4 sounds good) when Performance is a lot better in BMW. They make awesome the new BMW M4, its lighter, more powerfull and more economical with 3.0 L engine than previous BMW M3 V8, its a lot better car

My b5 s4 sounds better than the m4
The B5 S4 is one of my favourite sounding cars...when its working. As great and potent the car is, I simply passed it and bought an E46 M3, which drives and sounds better than the Audi, and much much more reliable as well. Might pick one up though cuz that 2.7 litre twin turbo is one hell of an engine that Audi should never have dropped. M4 will sound great too once the aftermarket gets their hands on one. You just wait.

I have an m4 and I can tell you it is fast as shit amazing throttle responses and a ridiculous sounding exhaust. And going from the m3 I can tell u the m4 is way better and I don't miss the v8 either.
