I tried to build a motorized tape measure with a brushless motor and an arduino. With aluminum parts machined by JLC it looked great, but will my bad design work?
Sometimes it's good to fail, learn from it and move on.

if someone's curious but doesn't know what "hold disabled state" means:
basically the motor needs the current to not spin, and the spool wants to unspool so when you turn the doohickey off it goes whoosh
if you have a 3d printer or similar style thingamajig you can try the following to understand it better:
turn on your printer
tell the head to move somewhere, like the center
try to move the head
it either won't or it would be really hard (other would mean either your hold current is too low and you already know the concept and wasting your time reading this or your belts are loose)
press "disable motors" button/use the G84 command/unplug your plug and try to move it again
it will move way more freely than before (do it carefully since the motors are acting as generators and moving shit too fast can damage the drivers or the motherboard)
BRO! I counted you hit that tape measure with a hammer twice and throw it around three times in just 90 seconds. No wonder it causes soo many problems to you. These things are literally perfect and all they ask of you is to be slightly kind.
All brussles esc's i used or know can be programmed to be bidirektional.
At least if they used simonk, blheli or similar Firmware.
I also flashed some cheap escs to bleli to enabe Motor breaking for my fpv drone
But i did this a long time ago. If you switch on an esc while full throttle most of them go in Programming mode , the motor makes some beeb Sounds and it is possible to set a lot of different Parameters, like directon Control, Motor timing, and way more... Look at the Manual of the esc.
Yeah, you’re probably right for most. I managed to find a manual for mine but there wasn’t any programmable options for reverse. Thats what I get for buying a $2 esc 👀
cool project, i love how unhinged it is. great editing and "acting". the timing of the jokes was awesome too! looking forward to more videos from you. its very fast paced which may not be for everyone but i personally love it. peak youtube
This is true ENGINEERING😎
bro switched up from pcbway to another company in 3 weeks
I think this could benefit from a motor controller which supports position/angle control, like the odrive or vesc. Combined with a microcontroller you could keep track of your extension and prevent the tape from whipping/breaking by decelerating as it fully retracts. They also greatly increase the stalling/starting torque with better control algorithms.
I feel like your videos would be more entertaining if you added background music, but I weirdly like that it's not as entertaining as other channels while still being funny. Kind of relaxing.
I agree! The relaxing vibe paired with the chaos results in a unique experience- background music could result in a sensory overload with these videos lol
6:20 The story was so good i forgot what i clicked this video for until you reminded me again. Great video!
I also did stupid stuff with brushless motors and propellers. I've got a scar to remember
xD same
I know I told you we would keep it between you and I but your mother found parts of a tape measure under your bed when she was doing your laundry and.. I want you to know that whatever your size, you are perfect. There is no ideal measurements no matter what you may have seen on MTV.
Not only geared down, probably also need to be senored with some kind of an encoder.
this tape measure needs some FOC
5:27 I remember using BLDC motor controller last year to control… a BLDC motor that I made. It did work, but when I touched the controller it was really hot. Thankfully it never caught fire or anything.
Instead of adding a gear reduction you can also use an FOC controller to get higher torque control
The end result is really clean looking! I feel like I could really see these in use. Maybe you could reinforce the tape measure a little bit so it doesn't snap lol
Use the Stanley Fat Max it has sturdier tape and has the furthest stand out.
This man is the future
I am scared of that future.
now connect the front of it to itself and put lights on it and you have a retractable lightsaber
the editing on this is impeccable
I just discovered your channel, great work brother. One thing i would recommend is to add a limit switch that activates when the tape fully retracts to stop the motor from pulling it too far which might break the tape.
This is such a great video. Subscribed. I design things almost every night until 5:00 AM lol
We need much more failed projects documented like this
I will say, u are a way better content creator than me at least for editing and uploading failed projects which I wish I did but I feel too much of a failure to bring myself to do that, nyalso I LOVE your editing style, its amazing
failing is how you learn. this will make you a better engineer
The pin error is wildly relatable. Thank you for this piece of art. I don’t know if I genuinely enjoyed it or if it was Stockholm Syndrome all along
Shhh, you loved it
Next time you need something like that, use an as5600 and add a magnet to the motor, then you just need to count turns.
(Also with that you would be able to dispense an exact-ish length.)
As for the motor, get a tiny stepper that's powered by an uln2003.
It is so funny that your face and head look like a 18 year old and your legs look like a 40 year old.😂 made my day!
okat, the editor needs an oscar, he's incredibly good, and if its you, yeah, ur amazing in video making !!!!
Awesome Video!!! In v2 you should add screen that shows length of tape out! May need an encoder. Subbed!
Not trying to dissuade you from continuing to design and learn, but Black and Decker made a product like this (minus the handle) called the Autotape (ATM100). Might be cool to take it apart and study it. Fun video!
Ngl, I dig your editing and video format
My new fav UA-camr …. Really creative
IMO the memeish(i guess i invented a new word) style makes it very easy to watch the video without getting bored
You could get more precision if you use Stepper motor. And you can then add endpoint limiters easly as well. As you can count the steps taken to fully extract the tape or fully rolled back on. Yes, steppers can lose steps so only counting on them to be 100% working endpoint limiters is bad idea.
I actually loved this it reminded me of the good old days of youtube
Wow, good content, nice editing skills, and great video production.
i don't know something i learned is that you always mess up your model somehow. so get ready to have several prototypes, iterations never go all in with first prototype xD
How do you have 100 quality vids, and only this many views? Hopefully you blow up soon!
If there was a V2 coming, I would have subscribed.
Congratulations you just earned a new subscriber 🎉
if you REALLY want to make this again I think a single wheel on with a pulley on the back side (you could do gearing with the pulley) would be the most efficent
Love your editing keep going bro 👍

you can simply use two simple limit switches to do the work.
the fact this was made in davinci resolve still amazes me
also i love this video
Anyway, to make the perfect mix of high explosive HHO gas 'Oxyhydrogen' you need a device called an electrolyser, that can split the molecules of oxygen and hydrogen from H2O.
Lvl 10 advertisement integration. Actually using them for the video? Supreme.
Video editing 8/10 you know how to use it, and do.

I'm glad I was recommended this. That's awesome.
Me too :)
I saw the thumbnail and thought you were attempting to recreate Disney's recently revealed extending lightsaber based on their public videos (and the ones covering it like The Hacksmith) and the patents. It's been likened to a double tape measure but with miniature (probably drone rotor-sized) motors (probably not as beefy as what you tried in this video, but multiple to make up for it).
hoho! you CAN design something that needs the motor to hold position in a powered state, but you need something fancy like an O-Drive controller - those are typically run over $200. but they did recently make a pretty tiny baby one that would probably work decent for something like this (you'd def need to gear it down like you mentioned though)
Haha, funny, I like what you`re doing, man
editing is very delicious (I want more)
really good video, thanks for sharing your process
This video feels like a fever dream
Its perfect
Congratulations 🎉. also you are my new favourite yt creator now.
Lets gooo, you are one of my favorite viewers now.
People need to remember that there are other options than brushless motors.
this is so well made, I would say you'll be famous one day but at this rate that day will be tomorrow
You need an ODrive with an motor encoder to drive the motor. Otherwise brushless are awful at low speeds
2:13 are those some huh-duh six hundos??

Stepper motor with an tapeeasure without the spring that retracts it
5:20 So why did the ESC caught on fire? Great video but a little more technical breakdown would be much appreciated
nice video, great montage.
sometime i spend a lot of time, webdesigning, programming for a projet for months, and after i finish it, i barely use it for a week lol, but the time spend to make it was fun and cool
turn it into a lightsaber and you'll multiply your views by a 10000x
Gearing it down for torque would be messy, direct drive with a lower Kv/ higher torque motor would be ideal
I really enjoy this editing, Its like really good!
Hello,
Glad to see your content.
Im happy to see you are enjoying yourself but please be careful with metal tape measure. Especially when they are retracting back into their casing.
Even with a regular measure the spring is strong enough to slice if it catches your skin.
You can lose fingers and get seriously hurt if you're not careful, I was dumb enough to use a tape measure as a yoyo when I was a kid. Really dumb mistake.
The way the tape retracted and violently twirled around your body was scary to watch.
Please consider much more safety into your design or programming when retracting the metal tape.
Take care, stay safe, have fun.
Still fixable imo. :)
You can put sensors on brushless motors to have good torque.
I hate to say this but this invention has been available since the early 2000s. Still cool though.
6:19 is my favorite moment.
5:24 ive burnt up an rc esc because it went in a puddle that was deeper than appeared, smoked, days later fired back up again, idk how that works

so fun to watch

Could you tell from where did you gain all this knowledge of making new inventions.
I also wanna be this type of Engineer, but don't know which college or university should I pick?
Years of messing around and building random things. If you have an idea, any idea, research it, look up videos about parts, figure out what you need and build it. Even if it doesn’t work out now you know more for the next project.
Unfortunately, college won’t really teach you that process. But in my opinion if you have the opportunity to go to university, go to the biggest one you can. They will have the most clubs/opportunities and professors you can talk to. And don’t be scared to reach out to professors for access to their workshops or help, they are there for you.
But thats just my opinion :).
TLDR: Just go build things, start small👍
