    I tried to build a motorized tape measure with a brushless motor and an arduino. With aluminum parts machined by JLC it looked great, but will my bad design work?

    if someone's curious but doesn't know what "hold disabled state" means:
    basically the motor needs the current to not spin, and the spool wants to unspool so when you turn the doohickey off it goes whoosh
    if you have a 3d printer or similar style thingamajig you can try the following to understand it better:
    turn on your printer
    tell the head to move somewhere, like the center
    try to move the head
    it either won't or it would be really hard (other would mean either your hold current is too low and you already know the concept and wasting your time reading this or your belts are loose)
    press "disable motors" button/use the G84 command/unplug your plug and try to move it again
    it will move way more freely than before (do it carefully since the motors are acting as generators and moving shit too fast can damage the drivers or the motherboard)

    BRO! I counted you hit that tape measure with a hammer twice and throw it around three times in just 90 seconds. No wonder it causes soo many problems to you. These things are literally perfect and all they ask of you is to be slightly kind.

    All brussles esc's i used or know can be programmed to be bidirektional.
    At least if they used simonk, blheli or similar Firmware.
    I also flashed some cheap escs to bleli to enabe Motor breaking for my fpv drone
    But i did this a long time ago. If you switch on an esc while full throttle most of them go in Programming mode , the motor makes some beeb Sounds and it is possible to set a lot of different Parameters,like directon Control, Motor timing, and way more... Look at the Manual of the esc.

    • @MarcinPlaza
      @MarcinPlaza  Місяць тому +3

      Yeah, you’re probably right for most. I managed to find a manual for mine but there wasn’t any programmable options for reverse. Thats what I get for buying a $2 esc 👀

    I think this could benefit from a motor controller which supports position/angle control, like the odrive or vesc. Combined with a microcontroller you could keep track of your extension and prevent the tape from whipping/breaking by decelerating as it fully retracts. They also greatly increase the stalling/starting torque with better control algorithms.

    Next time you need something like that, use an as5600 and add a magnet to the motor, then you just need to count turns.
    (Also with that you would be able to dispense an exact-ish length.)
    As for the motor, get a tiny stepper that's powered by an uln2003.

    You could get more precision if you use Stepper motor. And you can then add endpoint limiters easly as well. As you can count the steps taken to fully extract the tape or fully rolled back on. Yes, steppers can lose steps so only counting on them to be 100% working endpoint limiters is bad idea.

    I saw the thumbnail and thought you were attempting to recreate Disney's recently revealed extending lightsaber based on their public videos (and the ones covering it like The Hacksmith) and the patents. It's been likened to a double tape measure but with miniature (probably drone rotor-sized) motors (probably not as beefy as what you tried in this video, but multiple to make up for it).

  • @BagelmanSupreme
    @BagelmanSupreme 27 днів тому

    hoho! you CAN design something that needs the motor to hold position in a powered state, but you need something fancy like an O-Drive controller - those are typically run over $200. but they did recently make a pretty tiny baby one that would probably work decent for something like this (you'd def need to gear it down like you mentioned though)

    Hello,
    Glad to see your content.
    Im happy to see you are enjoying yourself but please be careful with metal tape measure. Especially when they are retracting back into their casing.
    Even with a regular measure the spring is strong enough to slice if it catches your skin.
    You can lose fingers and get seriously hurt if you're not careful, I was dumb enough to use a tape measure as a yoyo when I was a kid. Really dumb mistake.
    The way the tape retracted and violently twirled around your body was scary to watch.
    Please consider much more safety into your design or programming when retracting the metal tape.
    Take care, stay safe, have fun.

      Years of messing around and building random things. If you have an idea, any idea, research it, look up videos about parts, figure out what you need and build it. Even if it doesn’t work out now you know more for the next project.
      Unfortunately, college won’t really teach you that process. But in my opinion if you have the opportunity to go to university, go to the biggest one you can. They will have the most clubs/opportunities and professors you can talk to. And don’t be scared to reach out to professors for access to their workshops or help, they are there for you.
      But thats just my opinion :).
      TLDR: Just go build things, start small👍
