One of the most interesting concepts on the channel, bringing back such an amazing invention as Nixie tubes and combining them on a practical digital device
The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. Not yet sure what else could be there except for the numbers, I mean, how the actual gauges would be made.
@@upir_upir I imagine you could build nixie cube bar gauges, it could look like those early digital instruments, depending on how large the cube is you could make it to display the revs and have another one with numbers for the speed. But I don't know if there are any nixie cubes like that so even if its possible to build one it would probably be expensive to build do so. So if you were to build one out of readily avaliable materials it would probably be to just use a regular gauge as a rev counter and have the speed be displayed by the nixie cubes. There were a lot of motorcycles that used this mix of analog and digital display back in the day so it wouldn't look too out of place.
You should put this inside of a gearbox assembly, with contact plates for each position that close circuits which power the individual Nixie tube layers. It won't need a microcontroller, but it will be super reliable. For extra points, have a custom Nixie tube made that has digits for each forward gear and "R" for reverse. Really cool video, thanks for sharing.
That´s an interesting approach, but I´m worried that letting those 200V to fly around your car will not be very pleasing experience, I mean, it will not kill you, but it´s not nice to touch :)
You can use PETG to print the part, it is much more durable than PLA. And you can use PLA as the support interface for PETG, no need to spend extra money on a separate filament for support.
I mean, you could still be first. This is just a nixie holder that's counting to 6 and shaped like a knob. It's not actually tracking gears or anything. :)
Something I always tell people when they want to hate on something like this is; It's not for everyone but it is for someone. Good invention and probably can be utilized by some people or certain builds!
This is not only a really unique idea, but you also managed to realise the idea really well, which all made for an interesting and entertaining video as well. This is so cool!
@upir_upir most likely, they didn't have any nixie tubes on hand. Also side note for printing but you should rotate everything sideways and print using tree supports. Tree supports are really nice and use less filament and seem to work super well for me and break off easy. The side ways printing is so that if you actually use the shifter they layer lines don’t line up with the force for shifting, this means the parts should not sheer apart on a layer line. Just a tip because I have made the mistake of printing what was easier but the part doesn’t hold up and shears at the lay lines when force is applied.
Thank you for your comment, a lot of useful information! May I ask what kind of 3D printed part have you sheer apart? This shifter knob feels pretty solid.
to get rid of the support problem you could just add threaded insert. so it's kinda like a pipe with outer threads. then have both lower and upper piece to have inner threads. so you can print them flat on the plate. It would be then 3 piece set. and then you sandwich them all together. Prolly faster than having to switch the filament all the time and cleaner mating surface too. btw i'm doing it also. i already orderd the lcd display with bmw logo you showcased. :)
Thank you for your suggestion, I will definitely explore that path a little bit more. I like the idea of having smoother edges, even when I need to print 3 parts instead of 2. Also - good luck with your project!

I love all these shifter displays. Do you ever put them in a car? I'd love to see the rest of the implementation
Not yet, but it´s on the todo list. Once I decide on all the details, I will definitely put it inside the car.
Hello, this channel is very good, congratulations. Question: will it be possible to manufacture something similar to the BEELINE Moto product, which is a GPS indicator? Thanks
Thank you. I do plan to create GPS speedometer in the future video. Do you know a name of the device from BEELINE?
I would love one of these for my s2000! Add some weight to it and it would be perfect for my car!
I’m sure it would look great inside! I do plan to try to do that shifter from metal to add some weight
Id love this in the c5 corvette
I´m sure it would look great inside!
Это очень красиво 😍
Thank you!
At 11:00 Whenever im working on a challenging modeling part I like to perfectly lay my camera flat at the object with a tape measure next to the object. then In my 3d modeling software I add a background image of the picture I took then I scale a 1 inch cube in the software align the image and scaling to the cube and then I have a perfect scale reference of what im working on.
That´s a great idea, thank you for sharing your workflow!
I kinda like it i do have good muscle memory when shifting the car but a nixie tube gear indicator would be nice in my dashboard. when i kinda forget i drive a old 2007 suzuki swift sport 1.6 ive always been a fan of nixie tubes but never got around to it. (maybe i should dig deeper into that rabbit hole of nixie) xd
You should definitely explore the rabbit hole of nixie tubes! It´s so much fun and they are actually very simple to control with this little PCB.
Damn the internet KNOWS tho I was just searching for oled display modules 64 -> 256 etc.. dimensions, and also looking at some of the IPS/LCD/OLED mini touch displays for interactive buttons too ! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Perfect, it´s great the you landed on this channel. Good luck with your projects!
I think this might be enough for me to learn how to drive manual
Cool, surely a good excuse to use manual!
This would go incredibly hard in a Citroën SM.
Definitely, that would fit very nicely!
Bro and the heat in your hand jaja
What?
