- A rare video with an animal fight I managed to shoot by coincidence. A rat fights for survival with a bird.

Filmed this while having a nap on a bench in Madrid. I heard that strange sound and I was quite surprised to see this duel. It looks like a magpie but not sure and a mouse or small rat maybe? At the end you can see that there were more of the birds and well I just couldn't watch that any longer, went there to save the mouse. Moved it to a safe place and gave it a piece of bread.

@@J5X7 It's our imagination. There was experiment by one of pioneers of cinema: he shown same neutral expression male with naked women, child in a cradle and bowl of soup. People said that they saw lust, adoration and hunger in his eyes respectively, despite it was same neutral looking face.
So probably it's just we imagining sadness in mouse.

I felt really bad for the mouse. I still expected it to attack the bird but it looked like it was too tired already.
Being raised around farms it surprises me that the birds didn't make it a joint effort. I've seen chickens dismember and share snakes as well as eat field mice whole !

Magpie boxed very well in the opening round, controlling the pace throughout and held the centre of the path. The long to mid range pecks, great footwork, Roland had no answer. Later in the round, Magpie had Roland backed into a corner with hard straight pecks, Roland fought back with some excellent counter attacks and had some nice defensive head movement, was it enough to win the round for Roland? I don't think he so. A 10-8 round magpie, he is definitely up on the scorecards. Roland's corner will have some choice words and will have to change a few things in the next few rounds or it could be a bad night for Roland, the ref could stop things early.

I just think its ok to help a creature in need when possible. its such a rare opportunity, theres no reason not to.

This is a very young juvenile rat, just weaned and learning the cruelty of the outside world. Already injured, and can't put up much of a fight. Sadly, I don't think the rat will live very long after this. The lives of wild animals is so harsh, should make one appreciate the luxuries we have.

@@lenaa541 It's a magpie, they aren't stupid enough to make a mistake like that. Most corvids prey on mice and rats with this strategy, wearing them down until they can no longer fight back, then either piercing a vital organ or pecking at them until they bleed out.

If you look closely, you see the rat has an injured leg on the left. And it seems like the pecking is focused on the already injured leg and the eyes of the rat! I honestly dont think this was because the rat was considered prey... Could this be some sort of territorial fight or fighting over food? To me it looks like the birb goes off like "aight, imma fuck dis bich up!"

I watched something similar a couple of years ago: two (North American) crows were tag teaming a rat in the middle of a residental street.I thought that maybe there was something wrong with the rat (poisoned?) because they usually don't come out in the middle of the day. The crows kept pulling the rat's tale and pecking at it's head almost like they were trying to get to it's juicy rat brain. I watched it for quite a while because I had never seen or heard of such a thing happening before. Eventually it seemed as if the rat was either dead or at least near death and the crows were jumping around pecking at it still (at one point it looked like they were playing tug-of-war with it). FYI I heard no squeaking and in fact it was eerily quiet.
Pretty common to see rats out in the day time. I often see them in hedgerows and running across country roads here in the Uk
