When I saw The Association perform “Along Comes Mary” in concert in 1972, the late Richard Thompson played piano in an especially rousing rendition of this classic song; they received a standing ovation from the audience. Wow, that’s 51 years ago!
I've seen the Monterey clip before, it's excellent, D.A. Pennebaker should have filmed more of their set. It's sad but humorous but ultimately sad that Country Joe was deemed "hip" and therefore worthy of inclusion in the original film, but The Association weren't. Well, who's music do people listen to today and get their songs played at countless weddings? The Association are professional and totally on in this clip. I love the second clip, just wonderful, very touching.
I’d like to once again see The Association’s 1975 appearance on “In Session” hosted by the Everly Brothers. The group performed “Rainbows Bent,” The Band’s “Life is a Carnival” and an absolutely magnificent rendition of “Along the Way,” with the great Jim Yester singing lead on his song.
I guess this is from two separate performances. The performance of "Along Comes Mary" was from Monterey, but I don't know where "Cherish" was performed.
Oh, the Mary Jane must have been flowing freely in rehearsal when the group decided to go with the "intro" as a pre-cursor to their concerts. Kind of bizarre actually but hey it was the 60's! The Association- what a band they were with their soaring harmonies, memorable lyrics and melodies.
No evidence exists that any member of the Association smoked marijuana as far back as June 1967. Brian Cole used heroin. Do you find this detail helpful? I don’t feel anything is awkward about Brian describing “an Association machine.”
That doesn’t mean they smoked marijuana every single time they were in each other’s company. The idea of an “Association machine” seems like they just as easily could have conceived it without being on anything as they could have while smoking marijuana. The only band member whose personal problems are well-documented is the one who passed in 1972. Death causes a loss of privacy.
People tried pot and things back then, but there were those who just had a few drinks every now and again. Not everyone was smoking, tripping or shooting. Especially when you had a tightt touring and promotion schedule to keep. Brian Cole I believe had done heroin in 1965 and it got to be a full time problem later in the 60's. If you look at him in this performance, he looks sick. I seen that look too many times.
Be At Peace, Terry Kirkman!!
I love The Association and I love Along Comes Mary. The lyrics are full and complex and the speed at which Jim sings those lyrics is mind-blowing.

Wish there was more preserved from the Association set at Monterrey Pop 1967
Terry Kirkman wrote Cherish and sings the heck out of it here. Great close ups! They are such an underrated band!
He also wrote my favorite by them, Everything That Touches You.
He is not underrated. Did you take survey? Idiot.
@@mrb4886 Ooooooh, why the hissy fit Markie ?

proto-Devo moves in the intro!
More like _Talking Heads_ than _Devo_
The best sounding live performance on youtube is the Associaton live at the coconut grove 1979. Windy, Along Comes Mary, & Cherish.
This band smokes! 🔥 📛

THANK YOU !!!!
They were the opening act for the festival .. June 17 , 1967
Friday night, actually the 16th.
Thanks for posting Jan. This weekend(June 16-18) will be the 50th anniversary of the great Monterey Pop Festival. Tempus Fugit.
very zappa esq intro, association were superb xx
The first song was from Monterrey. "Cherish" was recorded at the Ravinia Music Festival in Ravinia, Illinois
Very nice version of Cherish..
...and how cool is the shot of the girl with the reel to reel on her lap! Hah!
Yes, that shot cracked me up. Fat chance of that happening in today's world. I guess they could use their phones.
It's a prehistoric iFone, Jan!
I was impressed by how relaxed and cool she was!
You would be clapped in irons today. UA-cam busted me today for the last Dylan piece I uploaded.
Unbelievable... drag...
That's a fabulous piece.
I don't want to do anything untoward. I'm going to have to review the concept of "Fair Use"
It's all very confusing. I just want to put the music up.
Thank You Very Much for posting this great video. I appreciate it and enjoyed it. Thank you
Unbelievable live version!
This is exceptional...
Real talent!

The "Cherish" clip is from a gig in Highland Park, IL 1967
Ravinia Festival
Wish that I had been there.

@@kelloggs5473 gimme a break, they were smoking weed when they were deciding to name the band. They were like many musicians in those days

Brian Cole was a total badass. He should have been in a band like Black Sabbath.
At 3:33 I've always wondered who sang the final "Sweet as the bunch" in the high voice?
I think is Kirkman
Dynamic band!
Upon further review, the track is recorded and the singing is live on the Smothers Brothers appearance. At least the lead seems to be live.
It does appear to be live though some shows producers used to go the lip-sync route.
This is live
They neve once put the camera on Larry, except his back.
The intro sounds like a _Talking Heads_ monologue
They perform this on the Smothers Brothers but lip sync the song after the introduction. Accountants by day and rockers by night
Hi Lawrence. You are correct as it was often a direction of the show;s producer.
Two thumbs down. Sorrowful souls.
Start this at 54 seconds in. The opening is one of goofiest things I have ever seen.. this is a great performance (except for the opening)
Get a sense of humour, you spineless jelly.
