    If the Kangal picks up a scent of an "active intruder" or threat in the vicinity while walking, no treat in the world is going to break his focus to the threat, he will be off like a heatseeker lol. Ash is so beautiful and a calm Kangal.

    I live in Istanbul and I am in love with a stray Kangal living by a metro statation in Turkey.
    He is so strong another 5-6 stray dogs are lying around him all the time. If he goes to Starbuck all the dogs around him goes to Starbucks. If he goes to a Doner Shop, all the dogs round goes with him to the Doner Shop.
    I know this dog for a long time and he knows me very well indeeed. Everytime I see him I hug and care for this big budddy. I think he is 80 kg already and he knows and love me too.
    Today I brought my Van Cat to him.. A total white cat with blue and green eyes. Vans are a special species and recalled to be the best cat who like to swim!
    Among all these other dogs, and my Van, he just pushed all the other dogs out and allowed the small cat in! 5-6 stray dogs out, tiny 1 year old Van cat in protected by the Kangal!!
    No fight at all. My big Kangal protecting my cat against the other dogs!
    This is really something else! It doesnt mattter! Whether you are a tortoise, or a sheep or a cow, goat or a even a Leopard in Namibia, the Kangal will protect you!

    We rescued two (2) twelve (12) week old Anatolian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees Mixed sisters this spring 😍🫶 They are very strong willed so I spent their first six weeks 24/7 here @ home with them in our Barn-dominium to Bound with them. That has helped tremendously to establish a loving / willing relationship ~ its a process but oh what Fun ‼️

    Having a Kangal who is motivated by treats is a blessing.
    When we're out and about there isn't a treat known to man which would motivate her. In fact there are times we're out and she simply won't even take a treat, treats literally mean nothing to her lol
    So yea, I had to get super creative to train her. You're lucky this dude likes treats enough to be motivated by it.
    It's also really good to see the type of progress you're making with this boy.

      What did you do to train yours? I have an Anatolian, which is basically the same thing just cousins of Kangal or whatever. But I have the same issue. I can only really teach him what not to do. It’s hard to teach him basics such as sit and stay or come. He does these 3 sometimes, on his own clock however. Although he is only 5 months old so it could just be a puppy thing. He knows his boundaries right now but I fear that as he gets older he’ll get braver and will wander off the property if I’m not outside with him. I have no fences right now, all my dogs have known where they weren’t allowed. With that being said none of them were nearly as stubborn as Duff. His instincts are great, other than playing with chickens. That’s one thing that I’ve found super hard to break him of

      Getting your Kangal to stay on the property is possible but extremely difficult to do.
      The easiest way is through repetition but again with a Kangal or Anatolian it takes A LOT of repetition.
      My best advice is to get an E-collar and use the beeping button. Every time he/she takes one foot outside the property start the beeping sound and immediately stop the beeping when they step foot back on your property.
      If you do this enough times they understand the boundaries of your property and understand you want them to stay within said boundary.
      The beeping sound is very low pitch but it's very annoying to dogs, your dog will learn it's in his/her power to shut it off with proper behavior. It doesn't hurt the dog in the slightest but it's highly annoying to them. It's a great way to mark behavior immediately even if you're not near the dog.
      I don't have a fence either but my dog has learned the boundaries of the property and knows I don't like it when she goes into the neighbor's yard. She 2.5 years old now and I pretty much let her roam around the yard on her own.
      If you do decide to get an E-collar I'd recommend the EZ educator with the wing tips, these fit quite well on a Kangal. I also wouldn't recommend using the shock feature that most trainers like to use, Kangals are very sensitive to that sort of stuff. The only time I'd ever use the shock feature is in cases of emergency like your dog running into the road with cars coming. The beeping functioning will work just fine if you do it enough times and be consistent with it.

      @@williamdavis9562 buddy you don’t know how much I appreciate that. I’m also glad to hear she stays on your property. Mine does a great job of staying on the property now. He can watch me walk down the driveway past the property line and he won’t follow me. He’s only ran past it 2 times. I’ve just heard it’s impossible to teach them boundaries. But hearing that yours who’s over 2 years old still respects her boundaries makes me feel better about putting the work in with mine rather than getting a fence.

    • @williamdavis9562
      @williamdavis9562 Рік тому

      @@ethan_erwin It's not impossible to teach them something, just really really hard.
      If for example it takes 50 reps to teach a German Shepherd it will take 500 reps to teach a Kangal. They can learn, it just takes longer due to how powerful their instincts for making their own decisions are. They're not dumb, they immediately understand what you want, they just don't want to comply until you really drive the point home that it's unacceptable.
      The trick is duration and consistency. If you allow them to get away with something once in a while, they'll simply assume your command to do so is a suggestion.

      @@williamdavis9562 you need to make videos on training them bro. A lot of people like myself would definitely watch them. I'm subscribed and I love your content. I've been dog training for 45 years achieving the level of US Army Kennelmaster. If I could make a suggestion or two. The first time you called ash to you. You made him sit. So did he get the first reward for coming to you or for sitting? The next reward was given because you grabbed his collar? Does he not like you grabbing his collar? (I'd work on this at a different time) I thought you were working on him coming to you?

    • @williamdavis9562
      @williamdavis9562 Рік тому +1

      @Michael Alexander, Great comment.
      The mind of a dog really is super simple. When you give the treat the dog the dog will think what ever he is doing at that very moment is why he/she got the treat.
      Even though my dog isn't into treats, the few times she tends to be into them I use a verbal marker to mark the behavior she is getting the treat for. So even if you can't the treat to them within a second or two of the desired behavior eventually they realize when the verbal marker is given that is what they're being rewarded for.
      Not sure if this is the proper way to do it or how pros do it but it seemed to work for me. Anytime she hears that exact verbal marker. 1. She knows a treat is going to come eventually. 2. She knows the exact moment she did what I wanted to get that treat. This tends to work well in training your dog to stop or sit when she is far away from you.
      If there are better ways to do this, I'd love your input.

      Thank you for your suggestions and for subscribing! My boys recall as always been great. The issue I was having is when it is time to go he associated the collar grab and leashing as a bad thing. It hasn't always been like this just when he turned 13 months. He would see me take the leash out and begin playing keep away. Sometimes it would take over an hour to get him back on the leash. He would stay close enough to me but not close enough to leash. I raised my boy using a marker word to mark the behaviour that I want. This is why he licks his lips. He knows a treat is coming. In order for me to leash him he needs to come to me. I want him to know if I have the leash in my hand it isn't bad for him to come close to me. It isn't bad to have his collar touched and it isn't bad to be put back on leash. Kangals are very intelligent. Ash picks up on patterns quickly which is why I am sporadically leashing him. This way he will not know when the walk is finished. Or at least stop thinking if he is on leash that it is a punishment. For the last two weeks I have done this in 2 locations and there is a 100% improvement. One in a distraction free area and the other place has dogs and people. I will be sure to pay attention to marking the command at the right time. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

My trainer said now he is in the adolescents stage until about 22-24 months... where they act like everything theyve been taight goes out the window or theyll pick and choose when to listen .. teenagers 😂🤦‍♀️ She said habing the basics and being consistent is key! Were going to strat recall training soon :) You're doing great! Thanks for the tips! My pup only likea meat as treats - so picky lol

    • @ashthekangal
      @ashthekangal  Рік тому +1

      4 months is nowhere close to adolescents. That's just a puppy. You will notice around 14 months that they really start to change. Likely everything will go out the window by 16 months.
      Kangal's are not like other dogs so I hope your trainer has dealt with them before otherwise you might be getting advice that is not applicable for your dog.
      Prepare for your dog to have explosive power unlike anything you have ever felt from a dog.
      A pinch collar could be necessary for walking him.
      Also you might want to consider doing your training with a buzz/shock collar.
      I will be doing more videos soon about this.
      Ash has taught me that Kangals are highly instinct driven.

    • @AWwww55
      @AWwww55 Рік тому

      @Ash The Kangal No, she hasn't trained a Kangal before. I told her that they aren't food driven and she was shocked when nothing she brought he liked lol (he likes real meat). Yes we plan on doing the buzz/shock collar when he is older. I heard at least 6 months of age. We have acreage but live very close to a busy hwy 80km but ppl go 100km (I'm in Canada). So I want to make sure he stays away from the road! Our property ends at a river.
      I told her that Kangals don't fully mature/grow until age 3 and she said that maybe he'll physically mature at 3 but mentally at 24ish months 🤷‍♀️
      Thank you for writing back and all your videos! They've been very helpful ❤️

      @Ash The Kangal I've read that... and recall is hard with them - I think if they're working, there isn't any recall, but I think that's with all livestock guardian dogs.
      We moved from ON to NB last summer. We bought our boy near Moncton, NB. His dad is purebred Kangal from NS breeder (his parents are from Turkey). His mom is 75% Turkish Kangal and 25% Great Pyrenees. So he isn't purebred Kangal.
      People have asked if his Anatolian shepherd and I tell them no Turkish Kangal. I've looked them up... very confusing lol They seem like thr same dog but it says Kangals are bigger?

    • @ashthekangal
      @ashthekangal  Рік тому

      @@AWwww55 I put alot of time and consistent training with my boy starting at 2 months old. I thought I could avoid the training collar. His recall was real good until he turned 14 months. Then he realized he didn't need to listen to me and there wasn't a consequence for not listening. After being out in the woods for 5 hours trying to get my boy back I realized the training collar is necessary. I should mention the whole time he never left my side. He just wouldn't let me come close enough to him to put him on a leash. Please keep in mind if you let your kangal run free on the property they can easily jump a 5-6 foot fence, dig under it super fast or will smash through it if they feel something needs to be investigated. They are very serious about guarding their home.

    It wasn't even worth finding the end of the video to find a bit of porcupine in his snout. A bonus in his training? Really? Maybe you'd have more subscribers and views if your content was more relevant instead of a recording of you walking your dog and giving them treats for doing the same thing over and over. At least I now know that Kangals aren't some intimidating breed to train. They're just dogs.
