    Chord melody, and walking bass are my most enjoyable things to learn on the guitar. Fortunately the guitar is just for me and apart from my wife nobody else hears what I am doing. I do put in as much time as possible to practice and I think that this is one of the best lessons at the moment. Thanks Jared.

    Jared, you are no doubt the best teacher. Your demeanor and approach is like sitting down in front of "live" teacher is superb. I am learning so much. A tremendous amount of practicing. Just fell in love with the 🎸 in last few months. At 91, I am having a ball. Always did love guitar, but I have decided to start performing on stage at 100. At least that is my near goal. Thank you the bottom of my ❤️

      Ditto everything you wrote Jackie. At 66, I finally have the time needed to devote myself to learning music theory. The difference it has made in my playing is noticible. Just bought my first electric guitar. At our age, it takes a lot of wrist, hand and arm warm ups and good judgement as what to practice as we can’t put inthe same hours in as when we were in our teens. If you read this, I would be curious to know how much you play. Best to you from a happy Jared subscriber.

      @@claudiafrers8923 Hi Claudia, thank you for comments. I try to practice daily. Hours, depends on my schedule, but at least a couple hours. I try to go through a routine to cover fretboard exercises. I use a journal to keep up with the repetitions. Though at times it can seem boring but I know that in itself it will accumulate over time to build "muscle" memory. After the focused work, I tend to work on songs in the genre that I prefer. God bless. Hang in there, one day it will all come together

    This is a great tutorial! I’m a piano player but it’s still really informative video. I play guitar a little bit and stuff like this has always intimidated me. It’s much easier on piano because I can see all my notes and my fingers don’t get mixed up haha

But question, what we are basically doing once we have our melody on the 1/2 strings is creating triads that the melody line stands out in? And if I know the note names but say a line in the melody is sharp the chord doesn’t necessarily have to be a sharp does it all long as the chord fits well?

    Arranging and playing Jazz chord melodies is like bleach for my ears compared to what I used to play before learning this theory lol. Though I still need to learn all the inversions, but it's probably best to learn them on a case by case basis (when they pop up) rather than drilling them in. At least that's how I learnt the Shell Voicings and Extensions.
    I'll probably try and visualise the notes on the string for different variations of chords and just learn all the triad or 7 chord inversions (no 5's here B)) before learning the extensions, just so it's easier to apply a formula for extensions in a way that translates up the neck.

    So you play the 5th interval note as the melody on the high strings and 1 and 3 on the lower strings to complete the Triad chord? I can find the melody which is easy to do but is there a way to figure out the chords of the song like you do figuring out the melody without having to use sheet music?

    • @soundguitar
      @soundguitar  2 роки тому +2

      Good question. No, you don't play the 5th interval always as the melody, the melody could be any of the chord tones or non-chord tones as well. Figure out which chord tone the melody is then fill the others in below it. As for figuring out the chords, that's very hard at first, the best thing to do is fine sheet music for it if you're not comfortable figuring the chords out by ear, which is something to work on long term for sure.

    On "Happy Birthday," the final chord shape you use doesn't contain the flat 7...it's same one you used for the G shape when the melody note is on the 8th fret. But the song shouldn't end on G7 anyway. It should end on G, and your notation is wrong. Otherwise, good lesson!

    Is it just me, or does the G7 chord seem out of place? A regular G major chord sounds more like the original song, doesn’t it?

      I like the dominant seven flavor in the fifth measure but the very last chord that's also noted as "G7" must be a typo. Right, Jared?

    Thanks for another great video !!! But why is this an issue in any way ? If chords are transposable along the fret it's so obvious that you're playing the melody and finding chords in nearest location to the melody (because you cannot transpose melody of course). Because melody is always in the same scale as harmony ( (almost...hello, jazz) , most of the notes would be _already_ included in chord by itself. Everyone who played "dust in the wind" intro knows exactly how it works. I mean... everybody play "dust in the wind" immediately after C chord discovery... right ? :) BTW walking bass works the same if you'll target bass line as a "melody" you have to play along with the chords. Please keep in mind I'm watching your WONDERFUL lessons in random order so might be this "part" is seamlessly embedded in a course and extends general knowledge. But seems like you've already taught us to draw the shapes and now teaching how to draw an outline around exact same shapes, because contour isn't fill and vice versa :) I feel the same about all "soloing over..." series. Any of your "mapping fretboard"" lesson immediately covers all "soloing over" or "finding chords" or "improvising techniques". It's all on the same fretboard you've mapped precisely. On your fingertips. Superpower of guitar :) If you're trying to provide magic formula for improvisation then with all notes from scale + all extensions + all reharmonisation sweets (upper structures, diminished chords, all voicing and inversions etc) - you'll have _all_ notes _available_ to you at all time. Literally. Every one of them will serve your intensions if you're brave enough :) It makes all "soloing over..." approach completely intuitive and based on experience. No formulae. You might harmonise any random sequence of notes and/or create melody needling any random sequence of chords to make it sound great in particular circumstances. Proved by Stravinsky and Schnitke :))) (and Metheny/Mays definitely). Ok, might be "soloing over" means another miracle pattern (astonishing tool! superpower #2 of guitar). It works. But chords along with melodies, rootless chords, block chords, inversed chords, voicing, extensions etc - It's all about the same. The same freedom (or randomness) of chords as freedom and randomness of melody. We might use music theory to classify existing compositions and find out why they are so pretty, but it's usually very weak in reverse. Music theory can't help to create music _until_ you already dealing with a harmony/melody issues you "hear" in your head but cannot project onto instrument. It means you already found these areas of music intuitively and _now_ you might classify them by theory. Theory as tool for synthesis instead of analysis - it's for gurus when intuition is not strong enough to support imagination. Like in quantum physics when intuition fails and we need a math to boost it! Anyway ! So many thought at once !! Thank you !!!! Please, more !!!

    This is insanely complicated. For your first basic example, you really had to use one that uses chords that jump all over the place and go all the way up to the 16th fret?
